Wellington's premier venue for heavy rock and metal music. They host regular live gigs from up and coming local bands in a well set-up but smallish setting, although this gives the crowd a more personal experience. Interesting selection of drinks at the bar.

Great venue. If you like loud raw metal and punk music this is the place to go. Tiny (100 people would pack it out). Loud PA. Great beer. Has an area out back where lots of people congregate. Looks rough but really isn't. No green room. Back line Marshall (for guitar) and Ampeg (for bass) supplied for bands. Good lighting rig. Had good digital desk until recently but spillage through desk means an analog desk is there right now. Fold backs are above your head and there is a giant railway sleeper separating the band and audience. Stage is only a couple of feet higher than the audience. The atmosphere for loud bands is great and Ben is an awesome bar manager. Friendly hard rocking bar.

Probably the closest thing you will find to a metal club in Wellington Central. Dirty and rough as it should be. Bar prices are cheap (also as it should be). Not exactly the good old heavy metal hospitality I'm used to, but good enough. Sound isn't great but it's a good time. Cool alley/courtyard/bin area where you can smoke. Ensure you check which band is playing before you go because the whole scene can change depending. Had a bloody great time there during Cubadupa when they set up an outdoor stage and they had some good bands playing.

Small venue but always has incredible shows on. Sound quality is awesome, the atmosphere is great and there is a large outdoor seating area if you need some fresh air, a smoke or a place to chat. Drinks are a bit pricey but there is a lot of variety so will be something for everyone!

Awesome venue if you like your music loud. For minimal cover you get several solid bands and a great selection of beers. What more could you ask for?

Wellington's own metal club, it's one of the smallest venues I've ever been to (but that almost makes it quite charming). The only issue with the place is because it's so small and it gets absolutely crammed because the metal scene here is VERY small, you will be absolutely boiling in here. But that is easily rectified by just going in the pit to cool off! Very reasonably priced drinks and very friendly staff.

If you like metal or punk, I recommend this bar. The aesthetic is pretty rough, your quintessential not flashy metal bar, but it's clear that they care about the place. I would recommend looking into what band is playing of an evening before heading off directly, as there is enough variation that you should be sure that you'll be catching something you're more likely to enjoy, in a crowd you're more likely to get on with.

Staple of the Wellington metal/underground music scene. Great craft beer and cheap jug options. Always a solid music card depending on your taste of genre. Check out the communal outdoor area and take in the metal history exhibits installed into the walls of the bar.

Best spot in Wellington for live music. Definitely a dive bar and proud of it, unpretentious and friendly team with a great selection of beers. If you're in a band from out of town and looking for somewhere to play definitely pay these guys a visit - plenty of backline available to use so you don't have to bring your own cabs!

If you are into intimate venues with a whole lot of character and some solid Metal then Valhalla is the place in Wellington to you. Check out their site for a lost of upcoming live performances. Drinks are very reasonably priced and the staff are great. Good spot to cool off through the door to the back of the venue. Just remember to keep an eye out for the hole in the wall.

A clear focus on music being the main function of this place. Limited seating encouraging standing, and even dancing. I believe the night I went they were giving new talent a go. Lots of passion, lots of volume ... and room for these musicians to refine and to improve.

Wellingtons mainstay for punk and metal gigs, it also regularly hosts every other genre under the sun, and has been getting a bit of a reputation lately for good sound and a great sound guy. Super friendly bar staff and owner, cheap beer, and also a decent craft beer selection for when you're feeling fancy! Go for the comfortably dingy atmosphere, stay for the good vibes.

Great Bar for local bands. Electronica and metal. Long history of music in this town. Used to be the in house sound guy hear in the mid 90 s. Have fond memories and occasionally frequent here when I'm having a drink. Love the honey mead which is made locally.

Sweet little venue. I came over from the states and saw that they were having a free show so i checked it out. Its a small venue compared to most ive been in but it was awesome. Decently priced drinks, awesome staff, and all around great.

I go to the Stoner/Doom Metal gigs at Valhalla and always have a good time. It's a small venue but with decent sound. I stay off the dance floor because I'm afraid of sticking to it, with the residue of everyone's spilt drinks. Hire a cleaner maybe? Or pay them more? It's worth it. Is this what they mean by the Sludge genre?

Great metal/punk venue. Small but full of love. Always something going on. The barman kept getting my order wrong but it was actually quite cute and I got a free shot of Jameson's out of it. I saw HEX (great local band) and wrestled my girlfriend on the carpark floor. I won. She lost my hoodie. I've never forgiven her.

For pure metal, go here. The people are great. The beer is great, and you can drink it from a horn. The music is great. I'll be honest, I haven't tried their chips, but their shots are great. I hate shots, I like their shots.
