M.
Excellent underground intimate cinema, presenting well curated movies. It's a single cinema with snacks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage options. The staff are super friendly
J.
One of my favorite cinemas in New Zealand. I used to go every Wednesday when I was in Highschool for the $5 movies, and now I go pretty often to see classic movies or movies that don't get played at the generic cinemas. Friendly staff and awesome cinema.

You would be thinking why is there so many dog photos in this review? The reason is that it was the first time dogs were allowed to watch movies with their owners and this event took place at Academy Cinemas in Auckland City. It was a full house and what a cool movie it was 'Secrets Life of Pet 2'. All the dogs and their owners had so much fun. You wouldn't believe how quite it was throughout the movie. You could buy ticket for your fur baby or they could sit on your lap or on the floor. I believe there will be more movies for the owners to bring their pet. Ticket was $20. So cool. As you can drr from the picture there were all types of dogs. This historic moment was covered by local TV station as well. Would you bring your dog next time if there is a movie where you can bring your fur baby?
T.
A really cute cinema. Lovely staff who checked us in and served us some real delicious ice cream and fresh popcorn.
J.
Great little cinema, tucked away under street level & bursting with all kinds of international & local movies, special features and character. Just watched the classic 1931 Dracula with Bela Lugosi & was not disappointed in the popcorn or cocktails on offer. Check it out sometime!
Update: Finally got to see The Process Bride on the big screen; popcorn still really good.
M.
My favorite cinema. Good prices and a nice vibe.
A.
Independent small cinema so not many theatre, and each is quite small. Staff are friendly, helpful, attentive, and professional. Unfortunately, the seats smells old which quite distracting. The tickets are more competitive than the big chain cinemas. Often screens indie, foreign, or documentary movies that aren't screened by the chain cinemas.
P.
It's a pretty cozy cinema with good volume. Very friendly staff too :)
M.
Went to premier of "Map to Paradise", a movie on
Marine Conservation now & for the future.
Hubby loved the coffee & he's hard to please.
Other pictures from around the cinema.
N.
For an international student on a tight budget, this is the ideal place for movies. I only paid visits on Wednesdays for the 5 dollar deals, and they are currently showing the award-wining or -nominated numbers which is great news for those taking movies as an art form like me.
T.
These are my cherished local screen rooms. A really eclectic mix of classic and art house flicks presented at reasonable prices. The 5 dollar Wednesday is a regular haunt for many of us who are open to sampling different genres. The staff are so lovely too. All in all, this is an important part of the Auckland cultural community and
K.
Cute cinema in the middle of the city with a unique collection of movies.
J.
First time at Academy.. Saw marathon! 13hrs! Drinks are amazing. Good range of snacks. Clean and tidy cinema. Friendly staff. Even took a group photo of us at the end... we survived lol
A.
A hidden gem! You can see new releases and old classics all for a reasonable price (especially on $5 Wednesdays) and in a charmingly retro setting. Snacks and drinks, including alcohol, are available and also reasonably priced.
E.
Great movies, great venue and location
N.
Superb service and you can watch new movies on Wednesday evenings for only $5 - bonus in my eyes. The benefits of these cinemas are intimacy and being able to order hot foods and eat them whilst watching the movie as well as have a glass of wine if so desired at your seat, just like being at home but in front of a big screen.
S.
A literal underground cinema in Auckland city, with entrance next to the city Auckland library. One of my favourite places to go. They show a range of films from older films, art house films, classics and recently released ones. I would usually go for their $5 Wednesday films (went for 2 films in a row recently). Ticket prices for seniors, students and children are great too, $9 for before 5pm. Cinemas are smaller than the mainstream ones (like Event Cinemas) but I love the ambience and the intimacy that comes with that. They also have a huge selection of ice cream, drinks and snacks. Would definitely recommend!
J.
First time going and it was a really cool cinema. Prices are pretty cheap compared to other places, and after watching Demon Slayer they also gave out free posters which was really nice! Highly recommended.
I.
Staff are super friendly and the prices are pretty good. Would recommend
C.
Awesome venue, friendly staff, nice food options. There are always interesting films available. There are a lot of movie festivals hosted here so keep an eye out for those (many of them are free). They also do $5 Wednesday were some movies are $5 per ticket.
A.
Probably every Auckland film lover's favourite cinema. Always showing great films, they do frequent special screenings/events celebrating influential directors etc., have quiz nights, and my favourite: $5 Wednesdays!! One of my favourite places.
O.
Friendly staff, delicious Kapiti ice cream 'choc tops' and a great selection of drinks. Interesting festivals and fun marathons/screenings.
S.
Great cinema and great choice of drinks! Love the "dump the trump" beer. Great $5 movie on Wednesday.
B.
Went for a movie in their small cinema and it is really small, just 16 seats! But it's actually really cool. Feel cozy, really nice seats with plenty of space. The staff are really cool and friendly. And I thought the price is decent for the kind of cinema.
s.
Very cosy little cinema. Good atmosphere and lounge area. Blurays and DVDs for sale. Price is on the high side, so pick something that isn’t in other cinemas/theaters...which shouldn’t be hard, because they show a lot of small release and artsy films. Cool place for the artistic film connoisseur. Parking is expensive if you go to the parking garage by the park down the road. I paid like $26 for probably four hours! Find a cheaper place or get there differently. Watched the Black and White version of Parasite and also The Lighthouse back to back.
K.
Always a great cinema to spend time in. Super clean, friendly staff, fab range of films.
A.
Very cute little theatre showcasing some serious varieties of film making. Love going here for their eclectic mixed shows and festivals. Even though it is small and it has great screen and sound system, even ice cream and pop corn. It is a couple of flights of stairs below the library but I love the underground movies feeling.
J.
Nice and cozy cinema. Love the atmosphere where people laugh and clap. Ticket prices are also fair. Only wish the seats were a little bit bigger and seats and they had some sort of seating system as it is first come, first pick. If you come late, beware that your group may have to sit apart.
J.
Great little cinema with an eccentric collection of films playing and the occasional festival line-up. Food and drink is quite cheap, tickets are usually very cheap, staff are perfectly pleasant and nice to deal with.
The main screen is functional. If you're used to modern cinemas you may even find it to be a little crowded and the seats to be a little uncomfortable, but they get the job done. It's a little like visiting the cinemas of my childhood, so I tend to enjoy it.
The tiny little screen is a delight. There's around 12 seats and a projector setup that makes for a fun, convivial little environment -- particularly as the kind of people who will be watching any films showing there are probably film nerds.
J.
I was running late as the bus I had caught was late. The ticket man was quick and helpful.
The theater attendant could have been more helpful or suggested I wait as it was pitch black (the State against Mandela & others) for the first 10mins of the movie and I struggled to get to my seat. Very narrow spaces between the seats. I thought I was going to sit on someone. Brilliant movie.
m.
Great cinema that shows a range of films from arthouse to mainstream and often has retro screenings. Great ticket prices, good snack range and a superb members club offering a stupidly long list of benefits
P.
Its under the library. Small but nice place. Two rooms (one big and one small). They do $5 Wednesday any movie.
B.
This is a nice little cinema with interesting movies. The liquid soap in the men's restroom has a very nice lingering smell on your hands. About the only thing wrong with the place is that the seats are very low to the ground and I can't think of a single reason for that. Why do cinema seating manufacturers make seats so low and why do cinema owners choose such low seats? Lift access is via the library and the cinema will come up and get you outside library hours. There is an intercom for this at the entrance. They have an expresso machine but they no longer sell slices or cakes to have with it which is a shame.
C.
Best deal for movies in Auckland on $5 Wednesdays. Be sure to check if the movie you want to see is in the boutique theater. This theater has just a few seats so tickets might sell out fast!
R.
I've been going to this cinema for years now, and they have been showing some movies which I would not have watched in other cinemas. When I watched Parasite at this venue, it was relatively an unknown film for the general public, and I felt like it needed to be seen by many. Sure enough, it gained popularity and reputation soon after to be shown in most places.
I usually go to the $5 Wednesday sessions, so in terms of saving $$, Academy Cinemas certainly gives that options to its viewers. When you watch a film, it's either the small cinema or a huge one. Also, there's no reception downstairs, so be sure to arrange a meeting point and time with your mates beforehand.
Y.
Nice and cozy theater. Pretty clean and we'll maintained. Don't know if it was the specific movie, but the sound system was a little too loud that it got jarring on the ears. Temperature of the theater was good as well.
K.
This basement movie theatre plays festival films and documentaries as well as their own selection of films from past and present. The theatre itself is just okay. Not the most comfortable seats and only a slight floor gradient. Totally manageable however. One of my favourite things about coming here is that the drinks and snacks are really cheap. Especially compared to mainstream theatre candy bars.
J.
We saw a movie here on the $5 Wednesdays. For the price it was great value. The lounge/waiting area is small but nice. Be sure to get there early to get a good spot or be subject to queues for tickets or snacks.
They offer wine and popcorn and a range of other snacks including kapati ice cream, although they are overpriced as usual. There is free water with glasses.
The toilets were small with only 1 stall in mens and because of the size, it can be busy constantly.
The downsides included the seating and screen.
The online booking indicated a different seating arrangement than what it actually is (Now fixed). Which meant we were put in an unfavorable seat. The screen was a bit dirty and the seats dividers do not raise/lower.
All in all a good experience if you are looking for a cheap and cozy place to watch a movie on Wednesdays.
Also be sure to imdb/Google the movies they are showing as some are not above 6.5/10.
A.
Fantastic, cozy atmosphere with lovely service and a great selection of food and beverage.
The film selection is always great, and the special screenings that are frequently done are great to go to.
Highly recommend this place for great vibes and cheap movies!
J.
this Cinema is very popular its right next to the Auckland central Library you don't have far too go especially when you come out and you won't to use the WiFi when you come out.
G.
Not your usual.
Shows mainly festival films. Pricing is very reasonable and I went on $ 5 Tuesdays to see the Edward Snowden film.
In answer to questions on disabled access I've received. It does have disabled access which is not apparent. You have to first go inside the library and ask a Liberian to give you access to the lifts lower level. It pays to phone cinema first so they can make arrangements.
S.
Cozy cinema with incredibly friendly staff and a great range of snacks. It feels very much like you're in the private home cinema of a wealthy person rather than a proper chain cinema. I love it!
J.
Such a great place, small theatre, always plays the best movies. Wednesday deals can't be beat. Plus popcorn is only $3 and they serve beer and wine!
M.
Neat little boutique cinemas just getting there and parking is tiresome. Nice cafe too served your traditional movie snacks and espresso coffee. Be prepared to climb 5 flights of stairs
S.
Wonderful staff, gorgeous little cinema, and always a great selection of movies! Hidden treasure of Auckland ♡
Y.
Good selection of indie and foreign films. Adequate seating, screen, and sound setup. Note: This cinema is located underground, you need to descend several flights of tiny, unpleasant cigarette smoke infused stairs to get to it. Cell reception is quite poor in the waiting area, as you are basically in an underground concrete bunker.
P.
Nice place, every Wednesday the movies are just 5 dollars!
R.
This is a great intimate little cinema.
S.
Great range of hot and cold beverages. Staff were friendly and professional. Good atmosphere to meet others prior to film festival movie. Large accommodating theatre.
N.
My partner hates movies, except those we see here! $5 bargains on Wednesday nights mean a cheap night out too. Book in advance though.
D.
Excellent central cinema with good ticket prices and an even better range of movies that spread beyond the mainstream.
A.
A more 'arty' cinema located in convenient proximity to Queen St and surrounding hotels and attractions. While Academy Cinemas often don't debut all the latest blockbusters, you can be sure that the best festival films will be showing here. If there's ever a film I want to see, I check to see if it's showing at Academy first.
A.
The new owners have done a phenomenal job of breathing new life into what used to be a dreadful cinema. I used to loathe seeing films here, always such disastrous sound, especially — but the A/V tech has been completely revamped for wonderful sound and vision. On top of the tech revamp, the new team are consistently nailing the programming, from new releases to thoughtful retrospectives. Huge improvement!!
C.
Literally an underground movie cinema. Love love love this place.$5 Wednesdays are so good for value. Cute boutique type feel that more often than not show quirky movies.
J.
Always a good time at the Academy :)
P.
Good selection of less commercial movies. Dairy free / vegans options for snacks not stellar. Also last movie my seat was hard! BYO cushion.
L.
I like the movie selection. I can watch movies from different parts of the world. I usually go there and not too many people in the cinema so I feel in a private session. I recommend it
C.
Delightful independent cinema. The screening rooms are fairly basic in terms of tech but ideal for most indies. Great selection of drinks.
J.
Cheapest!!!... And exellent place to watch all movies
I.
It's a cool place. Every movies are choosen and got rewards. Although the place is not big as other cinemas, I still like it!
Every Wednesday have $5 special price on movies.
P.
Saw "I, Daniel Blake" here and had a thoroughly cinema-like experience. Prices seemed typical, though I cried myself to sleep over how much I spent on coffee and chocolate. Good venue. Small. Cosy.
J.
Always fun to go to $5 movies at the Academy. Good value and a night out in the city. No complaints.
A.
A lovely, small cinema that screens the latest movies and also sells a wide variety of snacks. Try to go on a Wednesday as there's an offer for movie tickets- only $5 each!
j.
Get to watch some films not showing at the big chains. Nice small theatres so all seats are good. And the staff have always been pretty nice.
J.
Central Auckland' only full time arthouse cinema. Excellent ice cream, coffee and champagne. Deep under the library. 3 floors down. Not wheelchair friendly.
E.
Great atmosphere. Great ice cream. Very cute cinema. Smells good
c.
i like this place, no service in the theatre room though
K.
A lovely little theatre. Lovely friendly lady behind the counter. Nice space to sit and have a drink if you need to wait.
C.
Top notch coffee, nice tunes to sooth the soul and a gritty RomCom to boot! $9.50 all up! Well, I'm a happy camper/tramper.
N.
Well worth keeping an eye on whats on at this cinema, especially on Wednesdays when every film is $5. Booking is a good idea.
T.
they show such a variety of great movies. plus its a cute venue x
F.
A little gem of a cinema which is far flung from the commercial conveyor systems we have become accustomed to. Very well priced and an interesting lineup make for a great night out.
K.
They show a lot of anime movies here! My all time fave place to go for that medium!
A.
Great setup. Good selection of movies. Definitely a good Wednesday activity to cut the week in half with friends (Wednesdays are only $5 each)
C.
The atmosphere was very agreeable - a mix of nitrogen and oxygen mainly, but as the screening went on I noticed an increase in carbon dioxide and water vapour.
J.
Lovely small theatre with some interesting films on offer. If you are looking for something to do on a Wednesday go and see a couple of $5 movies.
N.
Whenever i miss a movie i check if its showing here. The cinema itself may not be that big or sound proof or new but the heck, its only $5 every Wednesday!
L.
Amazing films. Great drinks and atmosphere to boot.
K.
A nice little cinema in central Auckland with a range of alternative films. The whole experience from entering the lobby is cared about, and reflects the type of films shown.
M.
Nice small cinema at the underground.
C.
The movie MO TE IWI was amazing thank you for screening and thank you to those that share their harts leaving a legacy thru carving beautiful world of art and comunication promoting maori culture .Blessings 🖒❤👣💗
B.
Very small screen but it felt like our own private showing
A.
good movies and prices
T.
Love this cosy spot. Great way to break up a boring work week routine.
J.
New seating, but select near the isle as it's an old theater and the isle is the seating access point. A lot of alternative, sometimes foreign films. Very central location. No good for those who don't like a lot of stairs
h.
Cheap, not too busy, and the only place to watch more niche films. Will definitely come here again.
E.
Worth going down the stairs. They show festival films and other genres as well as those with mass appeal. Classy snacks.
M.

(Translated) There is a movie like Recommended.
On Wednesday, you can see it for just $ 5. It ’s so cheap. The chair is also a deep type and I don't care about the head of the person in front.
The $ 5 ice cream was delicious, but I wanted to eat popcorn. There is also liquor.
The seat number is written on the ticket.
There are two screening theaters.
The movie to be shown at different times is different, so check it out.
Of course, only English and no subtitles
Well enjoyed. A nice movie theater.
