This Reserve is absolutely wonderful....great family or work function areas with BBQS everywhere. Lots of wide open spaces, various garden walks, green houses, sculptures and a gorgeous lake. A must experience place in beautiful Whanganui.

Love the botanic gardens. Latest visit we had a family BBQ here by the lake. It was great! Bbq's are free, plenty of room for kids to run around & explore, heaps of shade to sit under, toilet block nearby. Lovely setting all round. Great to even just go for a walk in amongst nature. Beautiful spot that is well maintained.

Stylist, easy access, good parking, a delight to the eye for everyone even on a wet day as there are winter gardens, and opportunity to drive around parts of the garden as well. The gardeners there were friendly and informative.

Lots of spaces for kids and Whanau to enjoy some quiet. Gas bbqs, grasses areas and seating. The park is sheltered which makes it great on windy days. Near the lake take insect repellent in summer

Whanganui is not the centre you might expect to find a park as large and well laid out as Bason Botanic Gardens. It has been around for a while (1960s) so there are many mature trees of a wide variety. The most surprising thing is the very high level of maintenance, for a relatively small community. The gardens are tidy and beautifully laid out. The facilities are clean (barbeques and toilets, free hot water). A perfect place for a picnic and pleasant walk, with plenty to see for anyone interested in plants, including several hothouses. High priority for a visitor to Whanganui, although you'll need a car to get there from the centre of town.

Great place to visit - almost any time of year. The easy access site has ample parking, free toilets and little guidance from gardeners/carers or "staff" on the weekend. The grounds have several set walls in park-like surroundings in addition to the Friendship Garden and the Conservatory. The mixed contour landscape might make driving rather than walking more feasible for timid pedestrians. The landscape features are interesting in addition to the trees, bushes and extensive range of "flowers", succulents and a wide range of different 'gardens'. Clearly the exact plants, and condition of the plants, reflect the season in which you visit (and so its great to visit more than 'just the once '). The rhododendron are outstanding in October.

Great place, beautiful gardens and greenery to wander thro. Tones of room for kids to roam and explore. There's toilets, BBQs as well as the inside gardens to utilize. If u drive down the bottom part there is a lovely pond to walk around also. Lovely area to take the family or have a BBQ with mates.

The garden club I belong to had their New Year BBQ at the gardens, using a supplied BBQ and Council owned, 60 people attended and a loverly evening was had by all.

A must stop! So many indoor gardens with amazing flowers and what not. Lots of bbqs around and lots of green space. Definitely stop by here and check it out.

This place always surprises me with just how gorgeous it is. A truly hidden gem in Whanganui's crown of many gems and precious sites. A serious 'do NOT miss' for local tourists, and an awesome place to go in general. Nature, art, BBQs!!

What a fantastic asset to the city, a farm donated solely for our enjoyment. Spend time to walk down the steps and around, then drive down for a BBQ/picnic. Fabulous conservatory and gardens.

Awesome for a BBQ with the fam, or with just the boys, or if girls do BBQs amongst themselves... All in all, a good BBQ spot. And there are some flowers and some art... Wonderful gardens, amazing selection of plants... It's a good day out, however you flip it.

An awesome place for picnic. This place comes alive in summer with the native birds chirping. There are BBQ facilities available,ample parking and picnic benches. Lovely botanical garden.We enjoy every visit. The local council has maintained it well. A great venue for outdoor wedding or a Christmas or birthday party.

We went for a bbq and looked around the gardens I am in a wheelchair so it was lovely as there was heaps of room and access for my chair

Place is in immaculate condition. The orchids and phalaenopsis are amazing in the greenhouses and I loved how you could drive right around and be amongst the trees. Can tell that a lot of work goes into those gardens.

A little out of town from Wanganui, and a world away Free to see, but give a small donation at the on site information lounge. If you like to see and smell a whole range of flowers and plants, this is the place for you. On site BBQ's, plenty of shade, a small lake, and plenty of space for picnics and games.

This is a wonderful place to visit to admire the climate houses, the traditional farmhouse cottage garden and the magnificent terraced succulents. Take barbecue supplies and picnics. It is suitable for all seasons.

Beautiful place to visit, the glass houses, homestead gardens and daffodils in spring are a must see. Also an excellent wedding venue.

Lovely gardens with great picnic and BBQ facilities (electric hot plate). Great having boiling water available to refill your thermos (available in toilet block).

A very beautiful rolling parkland with open green spaces for field games as well as entertaining large family or group gatherings. Free to use, gas, barbeques are situated around the reserve for public use. First in first use scenario. Surrounded by mature and well developed trees giving sunshade and shelter breaks from any breeze! The old homestead garden is pretty and open for exploration too, adjacent to an information building of the grounds as well as a tropical garden and orchid room. Further a field is a enclosed fern garden too. You can either drive or walk the grounds. If driving, ample places to pull off the road and park to further explore.

Lovely place for family picnic

Every now and then you come across a hidden treasure that costs nothing but your time to visit This is one of them, a lovely garden hidden away on the outskirts of Whanganui near Kia Iwi beach. It’s divided into different zones and makes for a lovely relaxing and peaceful spot to visit. The winter garden area has a beautiful display of orchids and the other areas range from cactus to rhododendrons that where just coming into full bloom.

We love going there as it's good to relax with gas BBQ's to cook on. A place where kids can run to their hearts content. Many open spaces to run in or even play any sport!

Beautiful garden worth visiting. We have already been here several times and always almost without people. You can enjoy calm nature out of the city. Good place for relaxing, reading a book or drinking tea and watching black swans as we did.

A lovely collection of various flowers and trees, it seems like some are native where as most are of European varieties. A few barbecues here scattered about make it an ideal destination for a weekend getaway and summer barbie

Best outdoor environment for family/friends gathering for bbqs and even weddings. Plenty of space between each picnic area for separate parties and space to play outdoor sport without bothering other parties. Autumn colours in april.. good place to visit at least 4 times a year to see all seasons. Well looked after.. campervans picnics and good walk.

Cool spot for a week break. Very nice gardens in kind of a random spot. We relaxed here for about an hour before going on to Rotorua.

This place is Magestical. Is that a word..?? Who cares!!! It is now because that's what it feels like when i come here. I have the most incredible memories of this place. To sexy to even conjure into written word. Just come here and see for yourself. Bring ya girlfriend.. Play some Frisbee golf. Park up for a naughty romp in the grass.. Or even a frisky bush walk through the bush.. You wont be stressed with your horrible life once you've had a good ol blast inside mother natures natural bason of majestical wonder😉

I gave it five stars because it exceeded my expectations, given the random location! Many beautiful short walks, with a range of plants, flowers and natives.

Great little find on the drive from Wellington to Tongariro. It was much bigger than I thought it would be. We happily spent an hour here.

Our garden visit was a joy and a delight: Bason Botanic Gardens is out past Westmere, not far from Kai Iwi Beach. Carefully designed and established (1970-80s) by a forward-thinking gentleman who felt that in the future, busy working people would need a place of serenity and relaxation; his vision has been achieved and continues. You can drive around the entire property, stopping for short walks or to look at particular gardens, or you can park near the entry and walk all around. Clearly signposted and very well maintained, with older and new plantings blending seamlessly. I particularly enjoyed the new fernery (it'll be magnificent in a couple of years) and the linked conservatories near the information room & gallery; I got some great planting ideas, too! There are some intriguing sculptures - not so many as to detract from the plants - and beautifully designed barbecues built from the same brick as the hothouses. Near the homestead, with cottage gardens a little past their best in autum, is a zig-zag wooden post fence, with a window shape framing the view over the farmland. Beautifully thought out and executed; we'd love to bring our grandkids to enjoy these gardens in the spring or summer.

Just on the out skirts of Wanganui. It is 1 of Wanganui's best kept secrets. Some much space to have a fun time with Family and Friends. Good bbqs that are free to use.
