Reviews of Hahei Beach
a.
Beautiful place with clear water and good for swim good parking lot outside. They have water taxi to cathedral cove ,kayak on beach .Good protection by coastal rescue .It have toilets for public but washing hand wash and shower area .
K.
beautiful beach! there is a swing at one end and a beautiful walk up a hill at the other:) there is also a look out at the same end as the swing which has beautiful views. there are kayak tours that go out regularly.
J.
What a beauty! And so much space. Highly recommended but is quite popular. You also have a big free car park right next to it (gets busy during the holidays so better be quick) plus a public toilet. You can start walking to Cathedral cove from there.
M.
Beautiful beach 😍 I stopped off here before going to Cathedral Cove.
V.
Beautiful beach at the end of the cathedral cove walk. You can witness the true beauty of nature without human interaction.
V.
Beautiful beach, fringed with bright red pohutukawa trees, white sand and gentle surf, super clear water. Great for a day at the beach and easy access to Cathedral Cove (through water taxi or walk) while you're there.
P.
Beautiful beach on a beautiful day. What more can you ask for! We had a stroll in the beach and enjoyed the stunning setting while walking the dogs. It's awesome the dogs are allowed this time of year.
S.
I had not heard the name Hahei in spite of living in New Zealand for almost 20 years.
Yet, I fell in love with this place in my first visit here.
A small place but a big beach, with plenty of space for everyone.
I used the Cathedral Cove Explorer tour to see the other beaches too.
M.
Literally the best beach in NZ 🥰😍😍👌
Y.
A calm and quite beach with amazing view of the sunset and surrounding islands. The car park is not to big so be early to get space. A quintessential NZ beauty in all its sense. The sea facing villas looked totally worth the money from outside. The trail to Cathedral Cove starts here and is approximately 1 hour away but the route is all the effort and you won't break a sweat walking and enjoying the scenery.
B.
Amazing beach, clear water and fine white sand. The beach is a step down from the road/car-park but there are stairs periodically along the beachfront. The usual toilets/changing rooms/showers/etc. The only real gripe I have is the parking at the beach - since the grange rd car park has been closed during the summer (and fair enough, space was limited and the access tricky) it feels like it's being used by freedom campers as a 'free/easy' method of getting to Cathedral Cove via the cliff-walk rather than park in the visitor car park and pay for the bus or walk up grange rd (have observed the beach to be far less populated than the number of vans and campervans would suggest).
R.
Beautiful warm bustling beach ⛱. Amazing locals. Give yourself a treat here just before start walking 🚶♂️ to Cathedral Cove.
A.
Stunning beach with smallish child-friendly waves, and a surprisingly small carpark. It's a great walk from end to end, about one and a half km. The north end is FANTASTIC, and worth parking up for the day. The 45 minute walk to Cathedral Cove is also at the north end.
Dogs are banned in summer between 9am and 6pm... so get there early to play with dogs! Hint: Take a tennis ball, it makes the dogs a lot easier to steal! (Just kidding. Don't steal the dogs.)
Neat little village of shops and cafes just a short walk from the beach.
The beach can have a lot of tiny jellyfish in the summer - don't worry about it, they're harmless. Oh, and you can get AMAZING star photos here at night!
K.
When visiting Hãhei be prepared to relax while enjoying everything it has to offer.
This was my first visit to Hãhei as well as it being my first solo holiday. In the middle of summer this beach town is bustling with holiday makers most with the same intentions in mind.
You can choose to take a 10min walk up to the point to observe the sun rise or find you a nice spot on the cliffs or the beach to admire the sunset.
About 10mins drive from Hãhei is Hot Water beach, a must to do, take a spade (you'll find these at the local dairy & the beach lodge) & your picnic with you & join the many other beach goers & start digging you a hot pool & you're bound to meet many friendly people, the best time to go is low tide.
Kayaking is another activity with experienced guides that takes you around the bays to Cathedral Cove, upon reaching the Cove, the guide will treat you to a brewed tea & coffee with cookies before your paddle back. Hãhei also has a water taxi that takes you to the cove & Whitiãnga.
As for the beach itself, I found the water to be tepid, nice. I recommend this little beach town to anyone who is wanting to relax & wind down from the hustle & bustle in town
G.
Hahei Beach is a beach on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, just south of Mercury Bay. It is approximately 12 kilometres south east of Whitianga, and approximately 175 kilometres from Auckland by car. Its name comes from underground hot springs that filter up through the sand between the high and low water tidal reaches. The beach is a popular destination both for locals and tourists visiting New Zealand. Annual visitor numbers have been estimated at 700,000, making it one of the most popular geothermal attractions in the Waikato region.
Hot water springs in Hahei Beach.
Within two hours either side of low tide, it is possible to dig into the sand allowing hot water to escape to the surface forming a hot water pool. The water, with a temperature as hot as 64 °C (147 °F), filters up from two underground fissures located close to each other. These natural springs can be found on the beach opposite the off-shore rocks.
A.
I love few places in Coromondel and Hahei Beach is one of them because if its amazing views from the car park.
M.
Hahei is a beautiful beach, the walk from there up to the carpark at Cathedral Cove is beautiful, this is a walk that requires a steep but gradual climb, worth the visit. Coming back down is easier.
P.
Used to come here every year as a kid. Wish I’d understood then just how special this place is. Beautiful. Clean, wide, mile long, white-sand beach. Easy access. Love it!
E.
A beautiful surf beach with stunning views out to islands. The soft white sand was perfect for sand castles and relaxing on. The waves were huge when we were there and not suitable for swimming with our preschoolers. It was magnificent to watch though.
A.
Great safe beach for families with plenty of good facilities close by including canoe hire, snorkeling, water taxi to cathedral cove.
r.
Beautiful beach. Nice place for swimming and a quick picnic.
S.
Loved this beach. Absolutely stunning. Clear water and beautiful views all around. Long beach for walking along and great for swimming in too. We also found an epic rope swing attached high up in a tree that swings out over the beach. Beautiful and fun.
M.
Slendid view. We camped the night and were really surprised when the sun was up in the morning. The beach view was breathtaking.
D.
Lovely beach. Not to crowded. Good for a hot summers day. Showers and toilets are nearby and are in good condition. There are lifeguards. Parking may be hard to find at the beach if you are there in season. So rather park further in the town and then walk down. It's only about a 5 minute walk.
J.
Beautiful beach with pinkish sand and a Pacific island flair. Lots of activities in the area and the pour house for dinner and beer. We really enjoy coming here in summer and even in winter. Hot water beach never let's you down.
S.
Great beach for kayaking and also to have packed or take out food with friends/family (a number of benches around the beach)
F.
this place is wonderful, I had a super relaxing day at this beach, just sitting under a tree and I doze off while husband and son enjoying the waves...the weather was high and burning, but the wind made our day calm... we wanted to go to Cathedral Cove but the water taxi was also on a holiday for 4 days so we decided to just stay in this beach, relax and play 😍..
j.
Beautiful, rode a bike from Whitianga to here. Very enjoyable ride. Well worth it.
F.
Extremely relaxing beach to spend the day, weekend or even the season. Not too crowded (early December), white sand, nice time to dive in that blueish and calm water.
R.
Great place, beautiful beach, very relaxing.
R.
Why haven’t we been to Hahei Beach before? What a great piece of NZ - what a beach 💯& crystal clear water 💯
N.
Park your car by the shops if you want to go Cathedral Cove and shuttle will pick you up.
Breathtaking views and this place is good for Swimming and Kayaking.
A.
White sands and clear refreshing water
M.
Large public beach with some shaded area and public toilets. Kayak tour and Cathedral Cove water taxi from the beach. Ample parking and stairs to beach. Perfect for a chill day. Sand is very fine and water is easy to enter with a sandy bottom. Great for all ages and skill levels.
H.
Beautiful beach. A nice place to spend the day and avoid the often crowded Cathedral Cove.
A.
Absolutely no doubt this beach is the jewel in the Coromandel crown. Great white sandy beach, awesome walks including to Cathedral Cove with fantastic amenities. A must to visit, probably the best beach in New Zealand.
J.
Beautiful and nice beach. Good spot to relax and near of Cathedral cave.
T.
Beautiful beach for walks and swim.. There's public toilets however No shower facility onsite.
R.
Wonderful place, where have good views and calm waves. There is a trail for you to get there, but is very nice!
N.
Beautiful beach location, 30 minutes walking distance to Cathedtal Cove, good spot for viewing the sunrise, clean beach
D.
Great spot but becoming very commercialized. You have to pay and display at Hotwater beach and you cant even park up at the top to walk to Cathedral cove you have to park at the bottom and pay $5 per adult or $10 per family for the shuttle. Still the service is convenient and excellent. The path out to Cathedral cove is now fully sealed so you can use a push chair if you are willing to carry it on the short stairs sections.
s.
Beautiful beach with very clear water and can also see dolphins from the beach from time to time. Awesome location for families
F.
Gorgeous peaceful beach. There're bathrooms and changing rooms but no showers! There's plenty of free parking nearby.
A.
One of the most beautiful beaches in New Zealand. We spent my birthday weekend there kayaking and had an amazing experience on the ocean as the summer season started this year.
M.
Stunning white sand beach with clean clear water (a touch cold in March) and a great view. Close to the main restaurants etc. in Hahei.
When we were there over Easter the beach was busy without been packed. A must do if you’re passing through.
O.
Another beautiful beach in New Zealand, the views during the walk to Cathedral Cove are stunning. Definetely worth stoping by
G.
Wonderful place, love it here. Great walks and lovely beach. The church bistro or the Pour House for great food and drink!
R.
We went to the Cathedral Cove. The wall was very tiring but the beach and the landscape were worth it. Waves were awesome. It wasnt a good time to visit though. There were heaps of people. We just couldn't get our desired photo with the cove. *sigh. But it was a great experience, overall.
S.
Amazing beach! Perfect summer destination - close to cathedral cove
W.
Easily one of the best beaches in nz, clean and clear water, powdery white sands and access to cathedral cove... Close to facilities, cafes, bars etc must try the serial grillers food truck parked up at the holiday park down the road for the best burger in town.
J.
Outstanding beach ....little bit of a walk to get there but worth it when you arrive
D.
A nice quiet beach ! Should check it out along the way to cathedral cove. There are also parking for camper vans there
P.
Beautiful beach. Great vibe which no other beach in New Zealand has. Very relaxing. Awesome place to relax from a busy life. Highly recommend.
O.
Amazing beach with white sand and clear blue water! Spent a whole day swimming and sunbathing there. Great views. Watch out for the blue bottle jellyfish though.
p.
One of the wonderful beach.
Pretty quite beach and it is good place for Kayak.
J.
Great walk to the beach. Long wait for a water taxi if wanted.
A.
Serene and peaceful... must visit if you are visiting the Hot Water Beach...
E.
Lovely beach, white sands. Could see the Dotterels wandering around at sunrise.
A.
Beautiful beach, you can take a water taxi from this beach to Cathedral Cove
D.
Amazing beach!
It is very long so you will find a good place even on busy days
A.
The prettiest place so far.
Gorgeous views. Great walks. Magic spot
D.
Beautiful beach with clear water and great kayaking.
L.
Very nice place to visit , weather was not good for me so diddnt see the sights I would have liked
D.
There is a small amount of parking. The beach is beautiful and a nice swimming spot.
J.
If you come to coromandel and did not swim in Hahei beach than consider yourself stupid. Its simply stunning.
L.
Beautiful beach with pink sand and gorgeous view.
Safe for swimming and water activities. Very close to local cafe and restaurants.
H.
Beautiful stretch of sandy beach with views to islands in the bay. Beware the rough sea though
J.
Beautiful sunrise ☀️. Amazing feeling knowing you're one the first in the world to see it. Well worth the early start.
V.
It’s one of the beautiful location for family and friends day out, walk down to the beach is bit too long.
c.
Beautiful beach, well worth starting here if you are walking to cathedral cove
M.
Lots of parking. Shade, toilets and water to rinse feet. Beautiful beach with easy access. A must do
Y.
The sand of the Hahei beach is the best I have been to many beaches. Soft, comfortable!
L.
The water is crystal clear and you have a lot of fish eggs to touch and explore. But there are strong and high waves that made me feel sick.
M.
Beautiful part of Aotearoa. Very busy but so so beautiful. Go check it out.
L.
Pretty nice place avoid during holidays as gets swamped understandably Cathedral Cove is worth the walk be prepared to get wet if you want to see more beach
M.
Absolute beauty..bit of a walk and worth doing it.
R.
Best calm slope andwater taxi ferry around to Cathedral Cove
D.
Beautiful beach. Clean. Easily accessible from road. Stunning views.
G.
Amazing beach with stunning views
I.
Awesome place to explore the beach, cathedral cove, cafe and Pa .. keep coming back.
N.
We absolutely loved the villa we had with the sea view.
Hahei is gorgeous.
And so are the people 🙂
M.
Beautiful location, nice boat tour!
t.
Great once you found a car park. Feel sorry for the residents that live there. Beach is absolutely amazing
M.
Beautiful place. Pity about the expensive parking but I understand why this needs to be.
K.
Cold and airy in a lonely road. Fresh air and peaceful. Kinda cool!
W.
Nice beach free parking right on the beach too and it has changing facilities too
N.
Beautiful beach. Not crowded.
A.
Stunning. One of NZ's best beaches
F.
Beautiful beach, very calm and peaceful in the evenings. Parking spaces are limited in the day and during peak hours.
A.
Beautiful spot...A short walk to cathedral cove also...Kayak hire also available
A.
Great beach for families. Beautiful
A.
Wonderfull beach, but not as beautiful as cathedral cove, which the trail begins there
B.
Beautiful beach! I recommend to go to the northern end of the beach. It is just a few hundred meters and it is much calmer there and you can hide in a shade under a tree.
S.
Just north around the bend from Cathedral Cove. This is a nice stretch of sand to lay in the sun and cool off in the water.
K.
One of the most beautiful beaches I've seen in a while.
L.
Great camping at Hahei beach, clean and neat facilities! We absolutely love this beach. A swing, fastened to a giant tree, kept my teenage boys busy, as well as the dolphins that came to swim with us! Most definitely one of my favourite camping weekends so far, at one of my favourite spots xxx
P.
There is a beautiful bush walk from Hahei to Cathedral Cove. Its steep in places but views are spectacular. The beach is lovely and sandy. There is a little shopping complex with a good cafe . There are beautiful old trees that must be centuries old, or certainly look it. Hahei is a nice place to visit.
T.
Places always look beautiful when the sun is shining and Hahei Beach was no exception!
a.
A perfect place for surfing. Nice shoreline for walking too. Just need to walk for about 15 mins downhill from the drop off point so carrying heavy stuff is not a good idea. But I truly enjoyed every step up and down the hill because I walked with the one I love beside me with a picturesque view of Hahei beach surroundings around us.
R.
Beautiful beach, friendly people. Make sure you get there early in season to get a parking. You can do the Cathedral cove walk from the beach, it's a short walk through the sand and dunes to get to the main track. Pack lightly
R.
A great location within walking distance of Cathedral Cove and a 10 minute drive to Hot Water Beach. There's several good eating places and some nice scenic hikes close to the town. Good place for a weekend getaway!
T.
Don't get me wrong. If it was just the scenery it would 5 stars. But keep in mind it can be very busy here. Parking is disastrously bad. Most waves are gentle but this beach is well known by the locals for its very unpredictable and very big waves. Keep an eye on you children as the waves can be very gentle and seemingly harmless for a long time!
R.
A really pretty beach, which is great for walks or to just relax and watch people or birds.
H.
I love this beach so amazing
G.
Just fabulous👌
A.
Wonderful beach, awesome views. Must visit place in New Zealand!
S.
Beautiful beach in a marine reserve. Car parks above beach usually full. At midday no shade for cars. Clean toilet/changing block. Rubbish and recycling bins handy. Looks like visitors are respecting Hahei Beach and shop area and you too should keep it litter free and not let plastic blow into this deep blue sea. Some tree shade on beach for bathers and above beach.
N.
I visited Hahei at the very start of summer and the area was mostly empty apart from maybe a few dozen people. The sand is a gorgeous pink color, there are different species of birds living happy little lives there and huge Christmas trees grow all along the beach. It's very beautiful and peaceful with gorgeous sunsets and sunrises. The town of Hahei itself is very chill, there are a few restaurants and one shop and that's it. From hahei beach you can walk to other near by beaches such as Cathedral cove and Stingray bay in about 30 minutes to an hour depending on you pace and the walk there and back takes you through some beautiful forests and along side awesome views over of the ocean.
E.
Stunning beach and an awesome ice cream shop a short walk away.
k.
Nice long beach, half an hour kayaking to cathedral cove but you can kayak to different places around there.. Plenty of little islands. Its shady as well, small car park by the beach.. Probably not for the latecomers..
T.
Stunning beach, great for families.
R.
The stunning scenery of Cathedral Cove really is best viewed from a boat trip around the bay. Extremely exhilarating - but not for those of a very nervous disposition or scared of water! Life jackets were provided of course. We got a thorough soaking before we had even set off as the sea was so choppy. A great experience all round and not to be missed.
A.
Great beach, good to swim. Awesome holiday park right on the beach. Good 1hr walk to Cathedral Cove, up the stairs on the north end of the beach. Small convenience store with booze, cafe, pub and a gas pump. All you need in a holiday beach town :)
K.
Lovely beach. Has 2 BBQ stations next to the car park. If you're looking to visit Cathedral Cove, there is a boat which takes you for $15 one way. Be sure to go early so u can get get a seat both ways. We did the ferry one way, took a walk back, and then took the park n ride bus to get back down to the beach.
j.
Amazing beach, great weather, lovely water, shops just a short walk yp the road, no wonder this is one of our best beaches, was a great day, be early for a handy car park
T.
Stunning beach all year round. It can be quite busy for summer time but there are many watersport activities happening offshore. Surf is good too. There isn't a supermarket here yet so bring your own food if you need to stock up!
J.
Very busy beach, has a good lawn area to play, and have a meal. The gas cookers can come in handy.
Beach has lovely soft white sand, and blue water, makes it very scenic.
Cathedral cove is right up the hill, with the water taxi to bring you back to the beach...
This is one of the best beaches to enjoy a day of surf and sand in the coromandel.
Don't forget to go to the icecream shop across the road.
A.
The location and set-up of the campsite is excellent especially the quick access to the beach and Cathedral Cove is about an hour's walk away. However the bathroom facilities could use some attention both cleaning and modernising.
J.
Nice steep beach that's great for swimming. A river joins the beach at the north end and can be a safer and slightly warmer option for kids. I've been lucky enough to see orca and pods of dolphins playing in the bay on multiple occasions. Bring your camera.
P.
Beautiful beach. You can walk from here to cathedral cove.
E.
Nice place to visit, beautiful beach, expect a decent walk if it's busy as it's so popular the council like to charge ludicrous amounts for parking and the parking that is there is closed off so the locals don't feel to crowded in by tourists it seems.
M.
Cool beach. Clean public toilet. Can be very crowded in the holiday season. The car park is where the beginning of the track to Cathedral Cove is. The beach is clean and a great place to hang out.
S.
awesome beach.. relaxed time guaranteed
N.
Lovely beach and township beside the beach. $15 water taxi to Cathedral cove or a 5km walk with great views and other beach stops enjoying route. Do the loop track for lookout photo opportunity. Its 1km.
J.
Decent beach but can be a bit crowded.
C.
Cathedral cove kayaks are super cool, nothing like a day in the sun kayaking across the ocean looking back at hahei beach and cathedral cove. Stunning
E.
Would of been 5 stars but the bbq's didnt work
S.
Absolutely stunning views and breathtaking scenery... Will come back time and time again.. Pity I did not take any photos to show the views, but there are plenty of photos going around...
W.
Perfect example of a classical New Zealand beach. Golden white sands, gorgeous blue water. Excellent changing and toilet facilities and close to the small town. Also the starting point for the Cargedral Cove experience, by walking shuttle or water taxi.
M.
Such a beautiful beach, picturesque. It's easy and safe to swim, easy to get there and not too many people. If you like the sea and beaches, don't miss it.
T.
Beautiful beach, friendly staff good accommodation and camping sites, even though you get free unlimited wifi it is a very weak signal our phones wouldn't connect due to the weak signal and if you want to connect your motorhome to the mains water at the your site there is no pressure
R.
Hahei has a safe swimming beach with plenty of amenities nearby and the ideal spot to take the family or close friends. It is adjacent to popular Cathedral Cove which can be accessed by road, then a walking track or via water taxi straight off Hahei Beach. Do try out the shops and cafes which are tucked in behind the Hahei Store. Definitely visit this place.
R.
New Zealand's Hahei beach is amazing
J.
One of my favorite beaches. My kids loved it. Beautiful views. Local amenities such as cafes are great. Wish I could afford to live there 😁
D.
Everything was wonderful - calm waters, turquoise shades; most beautiful islets; the sand and the trees... Our kids enjoyed the place as much as we did.
N.
If you want to Kayak to Cathedral Cove, this is the place to be. It's also a great place to just chill on the beach. There are bathrooms and food all within walking distance.
J.
In my top 10 beaches in the world. Felt like Barbados.
G.
Loved it. Friendly people. Away from all the hustle and bustle of city life. Our stay here was amazing. Taitai lodge was amazing. Staff were just do helpful.
C.
Beatiful and excellent beach for relaxing.
G.
Lovely soft sand and peaceful water. There's a nice pizza shack nearby and its an hour's walk by the coast to the cathedral cove
D.
Fantastic beach, we walked to cathedral cove from here which was very nice, albeit hot! The cove itself is fantastic and this beach is uncrowded and not rough, even thiggh it was quite windy.
m.
Really enjoyed this fairly deserted beach. Light surf and white sands. Most people tend to pass this place by on their way to Cathedral Cove but I suggest it's worth the stay
C.
Best Beach in Nz. #Hahei #CathedralCove #ChumsBeach
S.
Wonderful beach..
M.
Pretty beach. Parking right in front of it. Shade and ocean. What else do you need?
H.
Awesome beach to swim at, not too rough and mostly nice and clean. Lots of sand to do activities on. Also great for long walks down.
N.
The cottage was clean. The kitchen and bathroom very satisfactory. Close enough to the beach and pub to easily walk. Friendly staff.
N.
Beautiful beach. Love coming here
L.
The water is just crystal clear 💎
조.
Don't need to tell something. It is good place
N.
Lovely beach safe for swimming
R.
Beautiful beach but make sure you bring your own shade as there isn't any except at the far end from a few trees
J.
On a nice day it's stunning 😎😁
OK for swimming but not real awesome. Pauanui is better, or else take the water taxi to Cathedral Cove.
H.
Beach is beautiful. Strongly recommend book your accommodation in advance if you intend to stay around this place.
S.
A pleasant and attractive sandy beach with great views to the Pacific Ocean. Great beach for walks during any season...
A.
Great beach! Waves are amazing, not too strong. At times, little pools can appear where kids can play around in.
A.
Long stretch of fine, white (pinkish, I could swear!) sandy beach. Great place picnic, chill and just listen to the sound of waves crashing.
I.
must see coast in new Zealand
my personal favourite spot
R.
Stunningly beautiful, and safe swimming for the littles especially at the south end of beach
Loved Hahei
M.
Great summer spot for the family
M.
What a magnificent beach. Had a wonderful early morning walk in brilliant sunshine. Peaceful and serene
A.
The beach is really lovely, but the parking situation is pretty dire. Even in the middle of winter we struggled to find a park
A.
Beautiful beach if you aren't in peak tourist season... Otherwise can be a little crowded and no parking.
D.
This is a great beach with sand and surf trump can often be found here in his speedos liberally applying factor 30 to his white bits before relaxing in the sun and contemplating impending impeachment
T.
Nice waves and the water is so clean!
T.
Amazing. Crystal clear blue water out to more than 50ft. Low surf, gentle rolling swells. 23+ degrees ... just magical
R.
A long stretch of pristine white sand. This is where you will take the water taxi to coromandel if you don’t want to take the 45 mins walk. Quite windy on the day we visited and the water taxi to coromandel was suspended.
R.
Nice walk dwn to Cathedral Cove
M.
