Good family friendly DOC camp with clean facilities. Cold showers were a big plus!
Beautiful beach!
E.
Large camp grounds , great facilities and being a bush camp no shop, powered sites pack in pack out policy makes you a responsible camper. The beach is beautiful water so clear and bird life a gift to watch.
M.
Great family camping spot next to the beach.
M.
Outstanding place to go camping. Basic but well maintained services
M.
Around 16 KLM of metal road but well worth the drive. A great DOC camp with toilets, water and very short <2 min walk to long sandy safe beach. Big grassy areas to park any sized rig
D.
A great stay. Very quiet mid December. No shop open and no DOC office open. New toilet/shower blocks are very nice. Mind those Mt Mauler flies while at the beach, they are horrible and their bite leaves you itchy for weeks. Tiny black fly with white wings on the dry sand.
J.
Shop only open 26 dec to 30 Jan each year. 10 new toilet/shower blocks, showers are cold but clean, has a rope and pulley to take a solar shower, toilets are great, very clean, some flush toilets closer to the beach on the high ground, neat for back to basics camping, colville is the nearest shop with lots of camping, fishing, food, ice, alcohol and petrol... great shop. The cafe next door sells cold vacuum sealed meat and has a great cooked menu and amazing fruit ice cream. Waikawau beach is great... a safe area for little ones at the southern end. Enjoy.

The facilities at the campsite are all new (as of Feb 2021) and kept clean - we saw the DOC rangers come and clean the toilets during the day. There is a shop open for the summer period (to Waitangi Day) that does ice, bread and other small items. Nearest small grocery store is the Colville General Store (20 min drive), which does pretty much anything you can think of (including ice creams). We stayed at Reyes End, which was protected by trees all around so wind was never a problem. Short 5 min walk to the beach, which was sandy and perfect for swimming, with slightly choppy waves, good for boogie boards. Note the road to the campsite is gravel for 15-20 minutes, expect your car to get dirty. Being so secluded means you can’t get a better spot to stargaze. Overall, lots of space at the campsite and perfect to get away from everyday life - phone coverage is great at the beach but marginal at the campsite itself.

Beach is incredible, perfect for digging holes. A tad windy. Cold showers were cold. Toilets were magnificent. A lot of youngins running around. Very friendly shop assistant. Lonnnnnnnnnng drive, but worth it. 12/10 would camp again.
M.

Loved this campsite! Was not busy at all in mid-March. Basically had the whole place to ourselves. The walk on the beach in WaiKawau Bay is beautiful, and there was even some surf. Great spot to lounge in the sand, swim, surf, etc. Campsites are very simple. No picnic table or anything to eat on, just an empty grassy spot. Booked online prior to arriving and everything went smoothly. Can hear the ocean from your tent. Will definitely camp here again.
A.
Isolated location made a peaceful spot. But unfortunately roadworks nearby meant big trucks thundered by during work hours on the very close gravel road. Beach was stunning, and lots of grass and shade to camp. Stars at night were best I can remember.
R.
Beautiful location. Wouldn't recommend Ray's location which seemed like a desolate field. Great facilities. Practically had the beach to ourselves. Some great DOC helicopter action as they returned from Islands. Were ravaged by the sandflies which seemed relentless.
N.
Great campsite, really quiet and spacious and very close to the beach. Toilets and showers clean.
J.
Always love coming here tuatuas an snapper for tea what more do u need
P.
Fantastic place for family's, heaps of space to spread out with great facilities. Lots of activities to do in a safe environment with snorkeling, surfing, kayaking and tramping tracks. A small store is also open with limited hours during peek seasons with a good variety of essentials. Also ice for the chilly bins and treats.
O.
Family friendly campground with new facilities and beautiful beach. Small shop that operates during summer.
A.
Great campsite. Lots of space to camp in a tent and plenty of powered sites. New drop toilets and cold water showers. Amazing beach fantastic for launching a boat and swimming. Safe for young kids too. Some great snorkeling and walks around. There is a small store only open during the peak of summer. There isn't much besides icecreams but if you forgot something they might have it. Will absolutely reccomend and return. Thanks DOC!
A.
Best camp site ever nice and clean 👌
J.
Great campsite, great camp hosts, beautiful beach, very fun sand castle competition, facilities weren't entirely what we were after (flushing toilets on website turned out to be in two zones only, clearly identified on the map now) but the other toilets turned out to be very clean and well maintained which was half our worry. An excellent family camp, and we're returning again : )
L.
Great place to take your kids
L.
Brilliant facilities for a DOC campground and the area is simply awesome
J.
Absolutely beautiful spot. Doc amenities are basic (cold showers) but very well kept and looked after. Perfect place to let kids play at the beach, ride bikes, chase eels in the stream or go fishing.
s.
Amazing!! Perfect beach and all the facilities you could need.
B.
It was very secluded. Very little common luxuries, however that's part of the charm. Only bad thing was that there were just too many people. It absolutely sucked. If you're planning on going, go when there isn't a lot of people. Pack sunscreen too.
K.
Wonderful campground with heaps of amazing new toilet blocks. So close to the beautiful beach.Absolutely loved it.💕💓
C.
Wondeful and very large DOC run campsite with good facilities and a kid friendly beach. Surfable sandbar at high tide and a gentle beach break. Can launch boat from beach with 4wd. Surrounded by hills so suns up late for cool mornings and evenings, can get hot during day but lots of trees and shady spots. Small shop onsite with ice and some essentials (e.g. ice creams), some flushing toilets and cold shower blocks, water piped in from the hills and droppies in most paddocks . Lovely native bush walk nearby, mostly easy grade about 3hrs. Can be very busy around the usual public holidays but idyllic when the crowds depart. 30 mins driving windy gravel road to access, ok for 2wd if careful. Worth the effort. Bookings with DOC website.
Update: Noted on DOC site the camp is closed 1 March 2019 - 30 June 2019 to install new toilets, showers and water supplies.
H.
Beatiful! Lots of shade, if you want. Sun too - you choose. Lots of space, beach access, great shop, helpful DOC staff on site. My favourite site for DOC camping. Awful weather this time though...
E.
This is one of the Nice's places to be if you want to just relax, swim, surf, fish or just go for a walk. There is so much to do. The bird life here is wonderful. Just another peace of heaven. Camp ground is well looked after.
T.
Facilities better now however DOC staff not visible leading to campers that push the boundaries and make it not as enjoyable.
D.
Waikawau is a Dept of Conservation campsite. This means that it's cheap but very basic campsite. We love staying there with its back to nature vibe. No shops (double check to make sure that you have everything.) No modern conveniences but that is the joy of the place.
It's closed at the moment while new ablution blocks are built so it will only get better.
If camping at the beach is your idea of a holiday, head to Waikawau for your next vacation
k.
Just a great campsite. We had young kids (7 and under) and they floated between catching eels at the the knee depth stream to the swing at the waist depth stream on the other side of the camp, all within ear and eyeshot
B.
New facilities throughout the camp are most welcome. Lovely to hear the bird life.
W.
Soft ground good for big tent pegs or snot bubbles
T.
good camping ground, came here following the death of my paternal fathers fraternal twin.
K.
Idyllic stay, didn't want to leave. No phone signal no Internet from leaving Coromandel Town. So it was great. Just chill and enjoy the awesome weather and countryside
R.

N.
Great place..very private and away from civilization..the road from Coromandel town towards the campground is mostly gravel road and very winding..the beach is awesome and some pretty good surf..
G.
Very nice DOC, the grounds are well looked after, lots of birds and trees around, not a very friendly desk lady tho, seems like she hates her job so much!
