Reviews of Boulder Bank Scenic Reserve
W.
The Boulder Bank spans 13 kilometres and is the longest natural rock pile of its kind in the world.
It was formed, more than 10,000 years ago when landslips in the Mackay Bluff (between Cable Bay and Glenduan) were swept southwards by strong sea currents. The bank varies in width from 55 to 240 metres depending on the tide, and the granodiorite rocks vary in size from large boulders several metres wide to cobbles and small pebbles.
Due to global warming, Nelson already gets inundated with king tides and storms.
Nelson can have very big tides, along with a storm on top of that and you get very high sea levels. It is quite common for Nelson to get 3.5 to 4-metre tide ranges.
Luckily, the city of Nelson has the 13km long, naturally formed Boulder Bank to protect it. However, that might not be enough in future.
The Boulder Bank provides a lot of wave protection but sea level rise will eventually wipe it out one day. Walk on it while you can before it disappears from view.
Driftwood already piles on top of Boulder Bank from big storms.
Petrified wood discovered on Boulder Bank, millions of years old, now fossilized rock.

Because I can detox from people and be present in the moment.. reluctant to share this as dont want heaps of people to start visiting 😂 only time it sucks is in the afternoon when everyone is running their dog alongside their car

Must visit for anyone that likes to tick off unique experience. This natural feature can't be found anywhere else in NZ and is rare in the world. Learn about longshore drift. Can't beat a walk here on a sunny day with light winds.

Had to park up here while we waited for someone and knew nothing about the place beforehand. Ended up walking for about two hours along the bank what an amazing place with such diverse things to see. Much better than spending a couple of hours in town drinking coffee. If you like nature this is well worth a visit but wear sturdy shoes
S.
+ Pretty cool place
- Sign says Boulder Bank is unique in the world, but doesn't explain why. Put up a little info board, please

Great place with a nice scenic walk along the boulders 🤗 smells a little like the sewage outlet next to the sea but other than that I've caught a winner kawaii, just meters from the bank itself and is a great place to unwind and get some sea breeze.
S.
Awesome views of the sea, great for a walk. Helped build the walking track years ago
s.
Amazing place to go for a walk, hard to believe it's a natural phenomenon as it is so level and eazy to walk, just mind the shifting stones.

Accidentally went for a swim, loved it! Only clicked that it was right outside a sewage treatment plant as we were leaving. Lots of gorgeous little dark red anemones! Water felt heavenly 🤪
I suggest moving the treatment plant elsewhere 🥰
A.
I love this place
泉.
(Translated) It is a long sandbar. It seems that there is 13 km. You can see the rough sea and quiet tidal flats. It looks like a mirror when the tidal flat is at high tide.
