Reviews of Paekakariki to Pukerua Bay Escarpment Track
A challenging yet fun trail, we suggest parking your vehicle at Paekakariki shops then catching the train to Pukerua Bay station and start there. The trail will take about 3-3.5 hrs to finish, lots of steep steps and uncovered areas exposed to winds.
Fun walk - great views. North to South is easier, but neither is difficult if you're moderately fit.
Gorgoues hike. We got a beautiful sunny day and was just bliss.100 percent a must do. Gorgeous views and such a one off hike.
The track is challenging but definitely worth-it. Lot of stairs to climb and descend. Sometimes the descending part can get hard if your afraid of heights, even more so if there is wind. Sunset views are spectacular.
Stunning view from the top lookout. Absolutely gorgeous in evening 😍.Parking is full on evening.Worth for a view and a walk.
Perfect for a day trip, steep steps, but is kept well maintained. Can be scary if you have vertigo, lots of exposed bits and the swing bridges really swing :) frequent train to take you back to the starting point if you drive. Highly recommend!
High winds and heavy rain but such a beautiful coastline! One of my favourite parts of the North Island, spectacular views out to Kapiti Island. Fishing, great for kontikis, surfing and beach walks. Why not head up the hills for that panoramic photo of the ocean!
What an amazing track along the Kapiti Coast. Lots and lots of stairs, both uphill and down and two swing bridges to cross!
The track is quite exposed, so be prepared with the right clothing and plenty of water! No toilets along the track.
One of our favorite hikes in New Zealand! Fantastic views, demanding but not impossible! No Toilets, no shelter!
Best to do the whole track (3hours, 10km) and take back the train for $4 pp👍
Take care, some parts are quit dangerous
This track has the most incredible views! TIP: Park at one end and get the train to the other to save you walking back on yourself! X
Great walk on a calm day. Steep and exposed in many places. Medium fitness required due to climb up and down. Great views over Kapiti on a clear day.
We started from the Paekakariki train station. Park your car there and walk towards the station. Cross the station and you will come to a small market street which has a Escarpment track board with all details. The track is not a loop. You either track back from half the way or take a train back to your car park. Very beautiful but a steep climb for young kids. Do wear proper tracking shoes and gear.
1. Amazing Views
2. For beginners - start from the Paekakariki station end
3. For experts - you will love the steep climb from Pukera Bay station
Hence not a loop track unless you are up for the challenge 😜
4. Avoid going with young children
5. Best during sunset and sunrise for the views
6. If you finish the walk early and yet in for some fun - would suggest going to the closest beach and refreshing yourself
7. Has some rough edges hence need to be strong hearted and not afraid of heights
All in all a satisfying walk which can be done again and again if you are around.
2021: A year later.. Walked Sth to Nth. Still amazing. Go early, beat the sun and the people...
2020: The views are worth it. There are challenges.. Stairs; no handrails in places; stairs; swing bridges; yes stairs;
Take snacks and water. Sunscreen and light jacket. It's quite exposed so can be windy. We drove to one end and took the train back, then enjoyed a coffee in Paekakariki.
Excellent Day Walk, fantastic views
Very nice great views of the Kapiti island.
A degree of fitness is a must for this walk and would not recommend it if you are afraid of heights . Also known as the skyway to heaven.
This is an amazingly beautiful trail on a sunny day - well worth the trip up from Welly!
If you are taking the train, the trail begins/ends at the Paekakariki and Pukerua Bay stations - you can walk either way but unless you are a glutton for punishment or really fit, I suggest starting at the Paekakariki end. It took this cubicle dweller by day and couch potato by night ~4 hours to finish the trail with a few stops to enjoy the views.
Very nice walk with great scenery. You'll have to be fit and not afraid of heights to do this walk. There is a lookout point halfway the track. Great place for pictures. Do not attempt this walk if you fear heights!!
Yes we got the most perfect day for it, but it was a good challenge, but we did it in 2hrs 10 min with 5 min break in between, we were not trying to race, but Helter Skelter(a bit of a buzz running, but mainly walking, no need to rush ) enjoyed it a lot , I recommend it, beautiful views fiji like staring down at the blue green water below, tough on the steps for sure ,I will be doing it again for sure.
This is a lovely walk of about 10km. I did it from Paekakariki Station end and finished at Pukerua Bay. This walk is part of the Te Araroa Trail: The Walkway covering the length of New Zealand! It took me about 4.5 hours with plenty of stops to rest, eat and take pictures [ I walk very very slowly ]. Choose a sunny day and less winds to have a more enjoyable experience.
Long term parking is available at both Train Stations. The track is well marked and signposted. From the Paekakariki station, walk south along the trail by the Highway. It then goes below the bridge and the actual walk starts from there. There are no toilets on the track. So make use of the Public Toilets within little distance of the stations before and after the walk.
After a bit of Native forests the track climbs along the side of the hill overlooking the sea and offers some spectacular views. You can see the busy SH 1 most of the time. The Kapiti Island looks magnificent from a distance. This also means you are quite exposed to the elements. Sturdy footwear, good wind-stopper is strongly recommended. There are plenty of stairs to climb and get down. And has therefore got the name "Stairway to Heaven". And there are no handrails to hold on these stairs. I felt, if you are walking from North to South, like I did, you climb up fewer stairs and climb down more of them. The track rises to a maximum of 220m at its highest point. People with vertigo should know their limits before embarking on the trail.
There are also two swing benches closer to the Pukerua Bay end. They make some eerie squeaking noises and are fun to cross.
Plenty of seating benches scattered along the way to catch your breath, rest or have food.
There are plenty of flowers and birds to be seen as well.
Trains aren't very frequent on this Kapiti line. So, if you're planning to catch a train back to the originating station, check the timetable at the station. There are no ticket counters at the station. It cost me $4 to buy a ticket from Pukerua Bay Station to Paekakariki Station, which can be purchased in the train itself. Keep cash handy.
Great track and definately a great workout, especially if you do both directions in one walk. Amazing views on clear days will let you see Ruepahu to the north and the snow capped peaks to the south.
Only downside I come across everytime I'm on this track is the inconsiderate rude groups and individuals. They simply will refuse to share the track forcing everybody else to make room for them. Sometimes forcing people into dangerous situations with little thought. They also dont care about blocking the track to let people through that maybe running, or simply trying to pass because they have stopped for a rest.
Such a nice walk! Took us 3 hours. Would recommend going north to south so you go down steps rather than climb it. Go on a non windy day!
This is an awesome walk that is part of the Te Araroa Trail that runs the length of New Zealand. It's possible to park at either end of this section at a station, catch the train to the next station and follow the trail back to the car. Tickets are currently $2 for kids and $3.50 for adults. It takes about 3 to 4 hours for a family to do the walk including a stop at the high point where there are seats for lunch. Take plenty of water as there is none on the way. The track is exposed so its best whèn not too windy. The steps are steep and if you don't like heights, don't do this walk. The views are spectacular.
A great walk with beautiful views. A little steep and exposed but worth experiencing in a good weather. Can become little dangerous in wet weather.
This is a great walk. It is not too difficult, so it is viable for families. There are quite a lot of stairs however, so make sure you bring lots of water. It takes about 3.5 hours. Try to do this walk on a day when the sun is not too hot, as it is quite exposed.
Incredible hiking track with very rugged terrain. From Pukerua Bay to Paekakariki took my wife and I almost 2.5 hours, relatively fit people going a moderate pace. The hillsides are extremely steep and there are no handrails so if you get vertigo or are not sure-footed this track is not safe for you. There are a couple of bouncy pedestrian suspension bridges as well. Lots of steps. The day I did it my watch told me I did 118 floors of stairs. I normally do 10-20. The scenery is amazing. Be advised the weather can change quickly in this part of New Zealand and the exposed portion of the track at the very top of the hill can be extremely windy though you won't feel it at the lower elevations at either end. Several nice benches to sit at picturesque spots which I will come back and enjoy on a nice day. New informational and historical signage is a nice touch. There is also a cute "lizard garden", ideal habitat for native lizards with educational signage.
Awesome walk ,might be hard for beginners as there are stairs and wind also plays the role..
Such a great walk with awesome views. You need a reasonable level of fitness to do this as there are many stairs to climb up but also many to go down. You're on the edge of a cliff at times so you can't be afraid of heights. Absolutely recommend!!
Physically demanding, but beautiful views. Sections of lovely shady native bush scattered along the track. The track has a high point in the middle at 208m ASL. (Paek station is at 6m ASL, and Pukerua bay station is at 80m). Either side of the summit are hard physical climbs. The climb on the Pukerua bay side of the summit is a long series of flights of steps up a ridge , where as the Paek side is a longer inclined gradient with less steps. The Pukerua Bay side of the walk has two high swing bridges and a very narrow section of track. Total walk time for me was 3 hrs 10 mins and about 15,000 steps. This included frequent short stops. Going south has the advantage in summer that the sun is more behind you , and on colder days the typical NW wind is behind you. Much of the track is somewhat sheltered from a southerly wind. The walk is well sign posted from both railway stations. At Paek there are two cafes just a few meters from the end of the track near the station.
Great day hike that's close by.
Features great sweeping vistas of the coast and an exposed cliff side scrambling.
A section of Te Araroa, New Zealand's 3000km long distance trail from Cape Reinga to the Bluff.
Something to do if you have a few spare months.
Awesome track, takes about 3 hours but it's definitely worth doing it. The view and the nature were at the rendez-vous.
Walking along the steep hill. 10 km, steady walk about 2 and a half hours. Got a water at a dairy in Paikakariki. Started from there. Sign boards are clear where it starts and finishes. Finishes Pukerua Bay train Station and shops. There are plenty of benches. When finish the course, get an ice cream at the Pukerua Bay shop. Recommend!
10km to walk and there are 3 swing bridges. One of the most exciting places in Wellington.
Sturdy walk, quite steep in places. Reasonable level of fitness required.
I do recommend it. Especially if you are into hights and some adventures. A beautiful walk!
NOT suitable for children or for the faint hearted. Took us two adults 5 hours to complete with frequent stops. Wonderful views but lots of stairs and upward climbing ‐no hand rail when very close to the edge of high hill especially scary when walking the steps downhill. Bring water and snacks as you will need energy. No bathrooms. Wear shoes with good grip designed for tramping/hiking. Some parts I slipped as I wore regular sneakers. Thanking God I never went over the edge!
Mesmerising experience. Did this walk on last day of 2019. Google maps is a bit confusing about the start point of this walk. While driving to the starting point of this walk google maps showed us a point on highway where you cannot stop or park. So instead we had to go to Paekakariki Station and park our car at the free "park and ride" and start walking through the station. The end part towards Pukerua Bay Station is also incorrectly shown on maps and as the end part is through the town, the road signs show the distance as 600 meters and Google maps show a different walking route with a distance of 1.7 kms so don't blindly follow the maps and look or road signs and be careful as some road signs are very small (about 10 cms wide) so easy to miss after a long exhausting walk.
My advice is to start from Paekakariki as reaching the top is comparatively easy walk with less stairs and towards the other end you have to come down the steep stairs. Just note that this walk is more than 10 kms but kids too complete this walk.
Super hot, but great views. Excellent walk.
Wow easy to overheat in summer, but I was running it. If you have water you will be fine. Nice views make it an interesting walk. Allow 1hr for running or closer to 2 hours if you are not so fit. Dont forget your C card otherwise you will be in for a 10km walk back down the road to your car. Not 5 stars as i am not a fan of the many flights of0e stairs and track could be better maintained for the amount of people using it. Recommend for semi fit to fit only, as alot of unfit people were doing it and were in pain.
It is a very beautiful tramping / walking track. We started from the Paekakariki end. You definitely need good supportive footwear, light clothing if the weather is good. Hydration is key for handling the numerous steep staircases, and there are numerous sets.
Views are spectacular there are lots of places to pause on the track to take photos.
Be mindful that the track is designed to be walked in single file, yes it's narrow and in lots of places it gets narrower.
Overall I would recommend this as a good track walk to get your heart rate going. If you don't like heights, this is not a track for you. The track gets high and you are close too the cliff edge, you definitely need to be very comfortable with heights and be very sure footed.
Enjoy it!
It's a nice hike. The views were stunning. However it's still a young track, and I got the feeling that it would be better in 10 years' time once the native bush has been more native regeneration.
You need a good level of fitness and surefootedness. It's very up and down, and there are some large climbs of stairs, and loose gravel slips you need to walk over. It's also a long drop off the side of the track.
We saw some families with smaller children, which I would not recommend.
Great work out, amazing views. Highly recommend.
A great track, took us just over 2 hours walking. We are in pretty good shape and hike a fair bit, for reference. A bit of wind made it exciting. At no point did it feel unsafe or too narrow. Take the train back.
This walk boasts beautiful views on a good day - it is well worth the steep and narrow path. It can get a bit frightening at times, especially as the path gets very narrow and seemingly gets very close to a sharp drop. For this reason, it is important that you avoid doing this on a windy day. It is best to do it on a calm and clear day, meaning that there is an unobstructed view of the entire Kāpiti Island - and if you look far enough, you will see the South Island too.
Amazing best one day walk I have ever done
Amazing track if hard work. Memorable views
It was a bit windy the day we did it but there were fantastic views. Lots of people on the track of all different sizes, ages and abilities. There are lots of stairs so a lot of climbing, but doable if you take your time. The track is narrow so wear footwear with good grip and be prepared to stop and give way to others.
Tough track, great views, not suitable for those scared of heights
I have done it years ago it was a good walking track
For people who love vigorous day walks on a calm sunny day this track offers glorious ocean views from some rugged coastline. It is served by the kapiti train line so you can use environmentally friendly transport from home to each end of the track if you are in Wellington with nice cafes at Paekakariki. Be aware the track is steep and narrow in some places with steep drop offs, though if you feel uncomfortable you can always turn back the way you came!
The post says it all: “Steep. Exposed. On the edge”
Plan your day and make sure you are prepared for the 10km walk (one way), a lot of steep stairs, and the thrilling views. One of the best day walks I’ve done in Wellington so far!
Spectacular view of the sea and Kapiti Island. Looking down the end of the winding steps from the top makes you feel like you are in the world of Super Mario. The trail is very exposed, don't forget sunscreen and plenty of water.
Great walk and amazing views if you don't have a fear of heights. Very narrow path on parts of the track with no barriers & very steep stairs so probably best not to do if windy or wet. Took my teenagers who enjoyed the walk down from the summit and the swingbridges at the South end. Then caught train from Pukerua Bay back to the Paekakariki Station where we had parked our car.
Best views on a clear day🌞
Amazing walkway, the only "hard" pets are the numerous stairs, especially if you are not a sport person, like me ahah but it was worth he pain and despair I felt when I was at the bottom of the stairs. The views are breathtaking, we were lucky enough to have the best weather even in winter (blue sky, not one cloud and enough wind to have a nice breeze). It took us 4 hours but we stopped for over 1 hour so I'd say it really took us between 2.5 hours and 3 hours. We parked at the station (tiny parking so be careful) and walked all the way up to Purekua station where we hitchhiked back to where the car was parked.
There are two bridges and the stairs go quite high so if you are afraid of heights please do not do it, although I am a bit afraid and I didn't feel scared one second.
I highly recommend that amazing walk 👍🏼
I walked this 10 km track from Paekakariki to Pukurua Bay in 2 hours and caught the train back. There are many steps and 2 swing bridges along the way and the track is very narrow in some areas. There are seats along the way to have a snack and take in the views of Kapiti Island. If you are lucky you may come up close to the Tuis.I personally wouldn’t recommend this for small children and it is a more comfortable walk if wind is 25k or under.Could be a challenge if you are not fit or have knee problems climbing stairs and there are no hand rails. Apart from that it makes for a great running track or scenery walk.
Fantastic walk. We parked the car at Pukerua bay station and decided to walk towards Paekakariki station to catch the train back and also reward myself with something nice from the cafe's in Paekakariki afterwards. If you don't mind ascending alot of stairs this then is the direction for you , otherwise i would suggest for you to leave from Paekakariki and descend these stairs instead. At times it can be very steep and narrow but the view is worth it. Will definitely return to do the track in the opposite direction.
The day was too hot really to attempt the track, but even so it was a great experience. Be prepared as it is a commitment and exposed to all kinds of weather. The steps are relentless, but there were wonderful views and lots of company on the track.
We had a great walk here. I was visiting New Zealand for the Lions rugby tour. Beautiful weather for mid June. Incredible views. However, not for the faint-hearted - Steep in parts - or if you are not reasonable fit. You go over two very secure cable bridges and lots of steps and narrow paths. No railings! Suggestion; Park at either Paekakariki or Pukerua Bay train stations, walk one way and take the train back. Highly recommend.
Overall a great walk! Track is is in great condition, was a windy day and still enjoyed the whole track despite the heights. Train stations at each end make this a very convenient track for larger groups as well!
Great walk and great view but don't go if you are scared of heights and bring something along to eat like a bar of chocolate. Bring lots of water too. Walk from paekakariki to pukerua bay it's the easiest way because of all the stairs. The bridges are the best part in my opinion because you can scare nasty little children by jumping on it when they are going across (that was a joke)
It's a must do thing in paekakariki.

My wife and I finally did this track yesterday after hearing about it in social media and other sources. We consider ourselves reasonably fit 32 and 31 year olds, with experience of tramping in NZ on several tracks - especially in Wellington region and its surroundings. Stamina and strength wise the track is not too difficult (but not easy) and is certainly doable for folks with average fitness. You'll be rewarded with awe-inspiring views overseeing Kapiti island, the ocean and much more. On a clear day I can only imagine how beautiful the sunset will seem, the day we chose to go though ended up being rainy and windy. I've sincere appreciation and gratitude for all those who worked hard to make this walkway a reality.
I'm keen to highlight this one specific part of the hike of a few (~6) meters where there is hardly a few inches (3-4 inches?) of width on the ground. To go past this they have provided a rope to hold on to so that if you feet does slip at least you will hang on to the rope. And if you miss the rope you'll probably land ungracefully 200 feet down among the bushes. Extremely challenging and potentially life threatening, if you're religious you'd probably start praying. The concern is people who embark on this walk are not aware of this before they start, I certainly did not read about this dangerous part in any of the reviews I read. Makes me wonder if this is a recent fix up or a recent slip?. Had I known this earlier I'd probably have done only half way and headed back to the car. I'm almost sure several average trampers (for whom this track is pitched in social media other places) would be terrified to cross that one small stretch of a few meters. Hence my strong recommendation would be to ensure you don't bring kids along (or weak hearted adults). My humble request to the authorities (volunteers?) if they end up reading this - please fix it or post a warning specifically about this part at the very beginning of the track. Ever since I called NZ my adopted home I was blindly confident about my health and safety almost everywhere I went - but for once it was a bit of a jolt and I got reminded that in the end it's up to the individual to take care of oneself. Please note that this is just my opinion and you may not feel as threatened as we did - so please only take this review as seriously as you should.
The rest of the walk is well covered in other reviews, including high gradient stairs of several flights with no hand rails, which would be sure to entertain at least one dooms day thought especially while climbing down. You can't help but think that one missed step and ... in other words these aspects are thrilling or fun even but not something that'll make you go back to the car. To be fair the warning signs in the beginning does call out people with vertigo.
Don't get me wrong, I can only imagine how difficult it must have to been to bring such a difficult project to life and all for the pleasure of a humble tramper. It's easy to find that one negative in a bunch of positives. Again I've tremendous respect for all those involved in bringing this difficult project to life, hopefully safety aspect will also be taken care of in the near future so that wider spectrum of people will enjoy a walk as beautiful as this.
Good track. Be prepared for some steep climbing and bring water. Track is 10kms one way so not a quick jaunt! Great views out to Kapiti Island and around Pukerua Bay. Not as much height and top viewing spots as hoped for, but that's life.
Perhaps worth walking if you are down that way and you have time. Highlights of two swing bridge and a high point with views to Kapiti island near the middle. Bring lots of water if walking this in Summer. Tracks are in good condition so can be done in around 2 1/2 to 3 hours despite the stairs.
Great walk on a good day! Wouldn't recommend when windy!
This is a brilliant walk for those of moderate fitness. The views of the coast are stunning. I would avoid rainy or post rainy days as the track would be slippery.
Nice track. Very steep stairs in places. Best on a beautiful day.
Would be better once the re-route up a steep embankment is removed.
Fantastic walk and views. You need walking clothes, not scared of high swing bridges and be at least a little bit fit
Must do.
Nice Walk with scenic views everywhere you stop. Take a waterbottle and lunch though as you will need it. Nice walk that follows the highway from Paekakariki to Pukerua Bay or you could do it the other way round. Would recommend the walk.
Nice walk for a day the weather won't let you in the Tararuas. Lots of steps and nartow track. Not for your granny in her jandals! You can use the train to access each end.
One of the best day walks out of Wellington
Very windy, nice natural beach, heaps of drift wood,
After visiting Fishermans Table you can have a nice stroll on the beach with view on Kapiti Island
It is what the website said it was steep narrow on the edge very high and scary wouldn't recommend if afraid of heights and best to be fit and confident to do this walk other then that the day was amazing the views were great made it to pukerua bay just under 3 hours trained back to paekakariki was a great day this walk not for everyone
Awesome track with beautiful views and several slopes with stairs, which lead you to the top of the hill in the middle of the route
A great 3.5 hour walk with epic views of the Kapiti cost
As the name says: "Stairway to Heaven, medium difficulty but worth every second of the 3.5 hours hike. Awesome views
Awesome view and decent track
Track to reopen after slip on 23 Oct 2021
Great walk, very picturesque : a little demanding but not too bad ; might pay to choose a day without too much wind.
10km walk with breathtaking view of Pacific Ocean & Kapiti coast. Not very relax walk but it is worth to experience. Recommend to try!
Great experience but definitely takes at least 3 hours so on hot day you need 3L water per person, even on a calm day thete are gusts.
Amazing views kapiti island and on a clear day the south island.walking the trek is fantastic. Don't for your water bottle.
Long walk, so go prepared with food and water, no toilets up there. But decent veiw at points
A really interesting walk to do a good tramp with up stairs and swing bridges
Excellent views. Good walking track. Stairs in good condition. Swing bridges are great.
Primo, good for a blast of exersize or a day walk, 10km all the way or 5km tp the top.
Very picturesque with great ocean views. A good workout and great to see so many people enjoying this walk.
Can't wait to struggle doin this lol
Well worth doing as long as you don't mind heights and swing bridges
Great walk steep path, in good shape when I walked it.... the track not myself.
Great wee hike. Not so great if you have a fear of heights
100 percent recommended
Great views. Track is quite challenging and very exposed in places.
Loved the place...nice walking trail
Hard to get on the track but once you find your way it's beautiful. Easy track
Most amazing walk I have done...thoroughly recommended
Such a nice walking. Just did half way!!
A great walk, so good we did it twice in 4 days!
Love that track. It's awesome, beautiful... Everyone should do it...!
Cool walk, challenging at times. Great views
Not really for kids, but getting as far as the first lookout was good. Will try again without kids. :)
Better do it when the hot time is over. You are walking on a frying pan with fantastic views.
Well worth the hike, north to south is best.
Love the view. Return trip is a Fabulous long run!
A great escape from the city, good for tracking and learning about nature.
Wow cool walk. Lots of stairs
Awesome vistas, some serious stair climbing...

A heads-up for anyone with noodle-arms like me: there is currently (March 2022) a detour in place roughly 4km in (heading north), which involves hauling oneself slightly farther up the hillside using a small rope. I abandoned my friends (to what I presumed would be their deaths) and turned around at this point. The walk is nice on a still day if you are fine with walking along sheer cliff faces, I guess? Before attempting it I had read about the swing bridges, stairs and so on, but these are really the most chill parts of the whole thing. Much of it is literally a single-file, rubbly dirt track which I can only assume was built by a goat with a vendetta against humans. The views are probably nice if you feel able to look at them? I’m not here to kinkshame, but I feel like this shouldn’t exist tbh.
(Translated) I went by two cars, parked at a nearby station, and parked another at the parking lot on the way back. It is a superb view. Definitely recommended! However, there were stairs and it was a high place, so I was a little scared.

車二台で行き、近くの駅に車を停めて、もう一台を帰りのゴール地点の駐車場に停めました。絶景です。絶対おすすめ!ただ、すごく階段もあり、高い場所なので少し怖かった
(Translated) A 10km walk, three hours and a little more. There is also the option of doing only half :) The view is incredible, hills, sea, the sky, it is impossible not to stop to admire the landscape. There are two long suspension bridges along the way, it's great. There are several wooden stairs, very steep. I would never consider taking children on this expedition, however I was surprised to see many families with young children. I think I should reconsider my way of thinking :). At the end of the journey, there is a walk of about 20 minutes to the next train station. I totally recommend it. It is a very rewarding experience

(Translated) Awesome place if you aren't afraid of high places.
