Reviews of Okere Falls Park
R.
A spectacular short walk to the caves and to the trout lake....great to see the kayakers coming down the falls too. Great history of the hydroelectric plant and caves where local iwi hid during war times.
O.
Amazing place to visit for the family. Easy access, parking, toilets and picnic areas, not to mention a great swimming spot in the summer
L.
Has a big parking area with toilets, tables and seating. Is a nice covered walkway with 4 different areas to check out, 1st being Okere falls lookout (says 1min is really 30seconds if that from toilets). 2nd is hinemoa's steps and Tutea's Cave from here the walk gets a little harder as you have to go down some steps where you'll see Tutea falls from platform, then you'll have to go down Hinemoa's steps to get to the bottom "Tutea's Cave" where you can go in and look around (make sure to take torch to see better/or use your phone light) then you'll have to go back the way you came, up the steps. Then you can carry on to see trout pool falls where people use the trees and swing to jump in for swim as the strong current carries them down river.
Then once you get back to carpark there's a very easy walk down some steps in the corner, which leads you to a platform right up close to waters edge to see the raging water

D.
Pity we didn't have enough time to explore more but it was one of them nice quick stop and watch people water rafting down the fall.
W.
Okere Falls Scenic Reserve is a 23.3Km drive from Rotorua. The Okere Falls walk is a very easy 3km round trip walk that will take you around an hour to complete. Walk along side the Kaituna River and view the famous Okere and Tutea falls and finish off walking through stunning New Zealand native bush before arriving at the Kaituna Trout Pool. There is also a Kiwi Guardian site nearby.
L.
Fantastic walk to see water falls walk between two car parks take around an hour, can swim at the trout pool car park end seems like great swimming spot, if lucky you might see some kayaker!
S.
Soak up the katuna river and falls. There is a loop walkway from the base to the trout pool. There are a couple of falls along the track and caves. If you are lucky you will see rafters. It is a DOC park, so no dogs allowed. Allow 1 - 2 hours for the walk and sight seeing
N.
Really loved stopping here after leaving Rotorua. The walking tracks are accessible and easy to manage. The view is stunning!
O.
This is one of the famous water rafting river. Located between Rotorua & Tauranga motorway. It got nice different bush walk to the river show. Crystal clear water all the way long. If your walking with the kids, be careful in side the bush. Bit muddy & slippery. We sighted couple of 'fantail' birds. Exciting walk for kids. Car park has enough of space.
B.
Awesome place to visit if your in Rotorua or driving to Tauranga, the loop track is great but rather steep! We took our stroller/pushchair on it but it wasn’t the easiest. Waterfall is well worth the steps down and don’t forget to look at the cave when your down there! Just a few extra steps. Carpark isn’t huge but it had campervans/RVs in it so great for tourists
J.
Beautiful historic site. Fantastic free activity for all ages and abilities
D.
Beautiful waterfalls.Quite easy path just 15 mins walking from your car park. You also get glimpse of people rafting along. When you are walking along the trail you discover a secret cave, which has a significant importance to it. Very clam and quite pathway. it’s a must visit place. It’s close to rotorua and Taupo Highway.
S.
One of the better places around Rotorua. The biggest relief is there are no ticket charges to visit this place which otherwise is common for all the other tourist attraction in Rotorua.
Well, this waterfall is not a big one. Its rather quite small waterfall but I guess it had been famous for the hydro electric generation back in the old days as there is a old turbine put up for display. Its hardly a minute walk to the waterfall from the parking lot. Also there are few walk trails leading upto other tourist spot, ahead of this waterfall. There is a proper sign board for it. One being the Tutea waterfall. The trees in this area are quite dense so walking around the area on a sunny day would be a pleasure for all. Also bear in mind that this place is not stroller friendly at all.
This place is a definite checkout if you are in Rotorua as its hardly 20km from Rotorua. So please go enjoy and have fun !!
M.
Had a great time here, nice walk but could be a bit challenging with the stairs but worth it when you see the waterfall. Beautiful!
P.
Sublimely powerful waterfall. Check out the steep track down to the water race.
d.
Great walk not too long etc
E.
Nice waterfall to check out and a good walk to do if you feel like getting out of the car for a stretch.
p.
Nice place. Goodfor hikers
C.
Absolutely spectacular, awesome to walk to each falls. And watch the white river rafting
#.
Nice easy walk - would suggest following the recommended route as one side has more uphill walk compared to the other.
Both end up in the same spot :)
Amazing place, can visit the caves, a couple look out spots and get pretty close to the river :)
Toilets on site which look really good for a doc site :)
c.
Its a great walk through the bush supper easy you could probably cut the times in half
A.
Beautiful waterfall with different landscapes and walks around the park. Worth the visit
R.
Great and scenic reserve with falls. A two way walk of 15 and 30 minutes with different views. Located at a brief stopover on the way to rotorua.
R.
Easy to find. Short walk to see part of the falls. More is further down at Trout Pool Reserve.
D.
Great place to stop and enjoy some beautiful natural scenery and fresh air. Great for your soul. 😊👍
K.
Wow absolutely wow
Great rafting spot for everyone
Salute to the great minds of rotorua history
Must to visit if u are interested in gaining knowledge abt place
FYI there is a step that takes u right to the falls
M.
Beautiful place. Get there early.
B.
Beautiful short walks, stunning waterfalls and cave.🤙🏻🤙🏻
A.
Several easy to reach water falls along the track.
R.
Nice and easy walk.
Stunning waterfalls with white water rafters is a bonus!
E.
Nice Hills to make a rolling contest. If you don't mind rolling in the thistle
C.
Beautiful Bush walk with 3 different waterfalls. Kayaking an rafting dwn the river is popular.
黄.
Super! All easy walk. Don’t miss it. Really nice place.
石.
Nice trail loop.take 1.5h to see rapid river and enjoy easy walkway.
P.
Good walk very nice scenery
A.
If you're into short half hour walks with amazing scenery then this is the place for you
K.
Awesome waterfalls and can watch the white water rafters and canoes
c.
A very relaxing walk to the falls
J.
Best seen in a raft. Visit the geysers as well
L.
Good waterfalls(only a really short walk) and a decent place to have a picnic
J.
Beautiful Reserve Park...Rafting haven...New Zealand nature at its best
L.
Some nice easy hikes in the area, but the falls are a bit underwhelming.
S.
Beautiful stop on the way out of Rotorua to stretch the legs and take in the lovely lush trees and roaring waterfalls
F.
An amazing place which isn't popular. The park it self contain few waterfalls and 1 cave! Good place for tourists to spend about 2 to 3 hours!
J.
A truly stunning walk through native plants & trees, along & over the river to the waterfall. We caught someone kayaking down the waterfall which was an impressive drop, also witnessed adventure groups tackling the rapids too. Children will of course need to be closely supervised as there are some rough areas of the track & gaps in barriers, still very doable for kids. One of our favourite walks!
G.
Beautiful place to get photos. Worth a visit for sure.
P.
A nice flat walk through native bush and the waterfalls are splendid. We walked upto the trout pool, it’s a good 40 mins walk one way. Make sure to go down the steps and have a look at the cave. Interesting history and information found there. Steps are a bit narrow but nothing an average person can’t handle. Pram friendly, carry your kid on a strap if you are going down the steps. We enjoyed a picnic lunch after the hike on the grassy knoll near car park.
D.
Place where you can breathe clean air and listen the birds singing and the force of the waterfall .
l.
Great river rafting and canoeing, spectacular rapids
M.
A very short walk from the road presents you with a lovely little waterfall. There is a nice swimming hole.
T.
Lovely bush walk with exciting waterfall rafting to view.
R.
A long steep staircase leads down to the waters edge. Appreciation of the speed and power of the rushing water only becomes totally evident at the bottom of the stairs where a narrow viewing spot cut into the rock allows a close up view of this torrent.
L.
Lovely walk and free to see
M.
Amazing place good for a walk, just a view or spending time (if you are in the mood) rafting or enjoying a picnic! Good for exploration or for a visit with your family, more beautiful, if possible in a sunny day! Close to Rotorua it's even not difficult to reach, should be an alternative day after a visit to a geothermal parks!
L.
Absolutely spectacular views, nice easy hike in beautiful forest, with the historic caves. Opportunities for kayaking and white water rafting, or go for a swim in trout pool if you can stand the cold water!! Quick stop where you could see it all and be done in a half hour or stop and enjoy a full day.
Don't bother with the "recommended walking loop" track, just stick to the river trail.
Public toilets at the top carpark.
K.
Well worth the very short side trip from the main Rd. Bring a torch if you want to see the back of the cave. We spent a couple of hours there with the kids watching the rafting and the "mad" people jumping off high stuff into the water. Toilets and carparks at both ends.
R.
Fabulous spot and beautiful. The native bush is just divine in a quiet environment especially as we don't have overseas visitors . We truly appreciate it.
s.
Great for a short family walk. Three water falls in a 30 min walk. Watch rafts and kayaks on the Rapids. Our 1 and a half year old walked the entire way but the track is also suitable for a Mt buggy type push chair.
C.
It was a nice short walk (around 4km to the end and back) of undulating track and a few (optional) set of stairs to descend/ascend. Some great viewpoints of the river and waterfalls and also a little bit of history to read along the way.
It loses a star because the trails on my map suddenly ended at the Fish Pools with lots of Private Property signs. I would have enjoyed it more if the trails were a lot longer and the first viewing platform extended down the hillside so I could get a closer look at the abandoned hydro-station.
J.
Beautiful and a healthy walk
B.
Short stroll from the carpark you will find this beautiful little gem. You will discover the remains of an old power station in the middle of a raging river that is very popular with white water rafting adventure seekers. The whole area is lush and green. Well worth stopping in when you are in the area.
H.
A great place to have a nice walk and if you like also for rafting. There is a quite easy loop trail starting from the parking lot which leads you to the okere falls outlook, tua falls and cave, trouts pool falls and the ridge outlook. It takes about an hour and if you are lucky you can also spot some rafters.
D.
You can spot this location on the way from taupo to rotorua. Free entry, parking space and toilets.
S.
Very beautiful walk and an exciting river rafting trip! Did not disappoint.
P.
Popular with visitors for good reasons. You can get fairly close to the white water action as a spectator in a breathtaking natural setting. Well graded path leads from vantage point to vantage point.
M.
Stunning spot near Rotorua. Easy tracks to explore with young kids and family.
T.
Beautiful place!! Waterfalls, rapids, lovely walk, great swimming holes and to boot not over run with tourists!!! Cannot recommend any higher if you want a few hours to enjoy nature at it's finest ❤️
I.
Beautiful place. Free overnight carpark. There's a public toilet.
N.
Beautiful bush walk to great views of the waterfalls. Bonus was seeing the white water rafts go through - spectacular!
W.
Its a hard walk along the ridge track. Can not see much from forest track.
A.
Some lovely short walks through the bush and you can walk down to the river and watch the white water rafters pop out down the waterfall
M.
Beautiful walks right in the thick of the action, great place to visit.
N.

(03/2017)
The road to Okere falls is little tricky and vehicle should be driven carefully on a rainy day.
A well maintained beautiful park next to the falls.
On a clear day you can spot few kayaks in the water.
Stunning views.
Interesting history. Turbines are still on display at falls which were used in old times to generate electricity.
Necessary amenities provided.
L.
Nice waterfall. Short track from the parking space. Go for kayaking if you can, you will not regret it.
P.
Beautiful walk, amazing waterfalls, even went for a swim downstream.
G.
Beautiful hiking area
J.
A short walk down to the falls, which are very beautiful. Look out for the white water rafters coming down too!
G.
Nice waterfalls very close to the parking area. Can see remnants of the erstwhile power generation equipment. Must visit. Wish the toilet facilities were a bit better though.
P.
Loved it. Beautiful walk around. So serene and peaceful. The Falls are beautiful too.
M.
Very nice walking tracks (light difficulty). Some great views of the whitewater river below. At various places along the track you can see the rafters coming along the river! Definitely recommend to others!
P.
A pleasant interesting walk pretty easy but you do need to climb some steps and in parts hills. Toilets pretty gross, need to be cleaned more often and checked for paper.
R.
Is a free of charge area. Beware of bus parking spaces. The sites are thrilling. There's historical caves. Highly recommend for adventure with family.
j.
Nice bush walk.
L.
Nice place to take waterfall photos.
S.
The nicest falls I have seen in New Zealand so far
G.
Beautiful spot and loop walk was enjoyable .
R.
Another brilliant waterfall
R.
Lovely spot, easy walks great river views.
j.
Nice if you are around anyways or Wanne go rafting. Wouldnt drive there in particular. Its a nice walk through the Bush and you See the river from time to time but its not that impressive.
E.
Free, beautiful and not too long of a walk for little ones. First waterfall is wheelchair accessible. Toilets were a bit gross but this is expected in an under serviced free area.
B.
Great place, easy to hike. Trails were well maintained. Have a meal at Okere Falls store next to the trail. Coffee was good.
T.
Amazing waterfall. Didn't do the walk as we didn't have the time, so was useful that we could drive from bottom waterfall to the top one.
m.
Nice walk to the trout pool from car park. Beautiful jade green water and the fall.
C.
Nice short walk on good tracks with good views of the falls and history of the area on boards.
A.
Nice place to view. Road inside bit puzzling though
C.
Beautiful worth visiting
K.
An easy short walk through the bush, past the remants of the historic hydroelectric site on the Okere river (that originally provided electricity to Rotorua).
A side path leads you down rock steps hewn into the river cliff, to a cave used as a refuge by maori in times of war.
E.
Beautiful view and awesome place to go for tracking
G.
Awesome series of falls with easy viewing access close to parking.
K.
Beautiful native bush walk. Amazing views of the Kaituna River fall and rapids.
Exciting to watch the rafters coming over the falls.
A.
Breathtakingly beautiful and so fun to watch the rafters brave the falls!
T.
Easy walk and was fun watching the white water rafts come down the falls. Would be interesting to come here after a huge rainstorm
R.
Beautiful falls and rapids. Great walking trails. Nice facilities. A great stop on a road trip.
R.
Amazing experience. Dense forest with attractive walkway and endup with beautiful water fall.
M.
This is a marvelous bush walk along side the falls, you can watch the rafting at certain times of the day.
A.
Awesome walkway, well formed track with lots of bird sound and awesome trees. There were 2 waterfalls to see and lots of historical information that is not boring! We looked at the caves early morning and wish we had taken a torch as we couldn't see in. It might be different viewing in afternoon-but I do suggest taking a torch with you.
A.
Quiet good scenic point and lovely track around the river and the falls, worth the stop!
B.
It's close to home, and usually quite accessible. There is beauty there during most weathers.
Summer is most popular
H.
Beautiful setting for a short stroll in native bush with the sound of flowing water. The falls are magical and stunning.
L.
Amazing Place..it’s not so far away from Rotorua city..the track is not long..you can relax and breath fresh air.. everything is for free 😀
1.
Easy walk, a few steps down to get to the viewing platform, that part is not suitable for wheelchairs or prams, but the rest of the walk is.

D.
Love this place , beautiful , scenic walks ... learn history along the way too
S.
Such a beautiful place and a great walk for all ages
J.
Lovely walk under the trees. Wouldn't bother doing the 'recommended direction' on the loop walk. Most of loop walk isn't under trees and doesn't have nice views either...just of hills where trees have been cut down. The walk from carpark to first viewing of rapids is only one minute. Keep walking 12 mins through nice trees and you can go down the steps to the next viewing platform. Keep going further down the steps to the caves. Fantastic to watch the rafters go down the rapids. One picnic table by carpark. Toilets but they are dark as. Bring a torch.
Would definitely recommend to see the rapids.
1.
Wow amazingly beautiful place and beautiful nature walks
M.
A nice hike with several platforms to see rafters on the river and a few caves.

A.
Great walk with family. Grandies loved it.
S.
More fun for riding the water, visually an average water fall.

Good place to challenge yourself with Original Rafting. Kaituna River and its amazing deep warm water canyons, including the now famous 7metre " Tutea Falls" - the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world

(Translated) I went on a hike and it was very enjoyable under an endless path of trees that help you have a good time, the path is well defined and there are viewpoints where you can observe the river. There are not many garbage cans, so I recommend you not to take a lot of food for the road, the path can be done in 30 min walking with breaks.

(Translated) Ragtime tour was really fun definitely recommend the tour costs about 80 dollars per person and you get things to wear so neo-bare suit etc. that you don't freeze then into the water fall and a canoe goes with that takes care of you you can see really nice rocks that you wouldn't see otherwise the whole thing is actually as good as harmless if your boat tips over then you can just let yourself drift you come up again because of the life jacket sounds bad but is not it we are even a waterfall went down without a boat that was really awesome feeling the guide was very cool and made me feel safe

(Translated) Perfect experience with rafting, a total of two-hour attractions with more than an hour on the boat 🙂 everything can be borrowed, bad weather doesn't matter, fun instructors 😃 drove waterfalls with us, we could go down without rafts
(Original)
Bezvadná zkušenost s raftovanim, celkem dvouhodinová atrakce s více než hodinou na lodi 🙂 všechno půjčí, nevadí špatné počasí, zábavní instruktoři 😃 projeli s námi vodopády, jeden jsme mohli sjet bez raftů, najíždění do kaskád čumákem raftu, prostě paráda 😉
