We LOVE this campsite, and have returned a few times bringing friends. However we stayed this past Waitangi weekend and were horrified by the toilets - they were clean, but the stench was awful and something you would dread facing first thing in the morning! The flies were also unrelenting. I'm not sure if this was down to the unusually high humidity? Or whether the long drops were overdue to be emptied? If the latter I hope this can be rectified so we can stay again. There is a beautiful walk round the headland and kiwi in the bush which you can hear at night. Beautiful spot on a fine (not humid!!) weekend, great for the kids.

Beautiful campsite, quite a few spots right on the beach front (make sure to book through the DOC website). The road there from SH1 is a 1 hour windy road, so be prepared. Oakura (30 min away) is the closest reasonable sized shop, so I’d recommend coming prepared. There is a small shop that does ice (for $7/bag!), ice cream and some other things at Bland Bay Motor Camp (not listed on google maps), but the lady there was unwelcoming so we left 😒 The check in hut at the campsite has a deep freezer which you can use to freeze things (ice packs) over night, and also offers 1.5L ice bottles for $1. Showers are cold, but relatively new and clean and have hooks for solar showers. Toilets are long drops, pretty standard. The bay faces west so sunset in the evening. Would recommend the Whangaruru Southern Loop track to explore the area, it’s about 1 hour and there is a bit of up and down hill involved. Note that this bay is rocky/Shelly and not soft yellow sand all around. There are rocks in the middle/north end of the bay, but the south end is where we saw most people swimming. The bay is well protected so the water is calm for kayaking, paddle boarding etc, but the winds do come up over the hills on the east side from the ocean on the other side. Also, 4G reception at the entire campsite!

Great place! Great beach for kids to swim in. Facilities are good with lots plotted around the place. Have long drops for toilets but they are far enough to not have to smell it. You'll have to be prepared with food and drinks as it is far from shops. They do they taps that you can use for drinking. You can buy ice at Bland Bay for your chilly bin. Camp host was lovely. Campers were respectful with noise level at night. Lots of native bird life around, ducks accompanying me while I was reading and a family of Quails visiting you everyday! Can't wait to go back again.

Such a fantastic location beautiful bay with an awesome host and plenty of things to do, we spent 5 days here and loved every moment facility's we're kept clean and good rubbish/ recycling areas. The camp sites are clearly marked and not to small, even tho the camp was full Saturday night it was not overcrowded and no waiting for showers or the sink. There is also a great walk through the bush with plenty of beautiful views out to the coast.

Probably the best campsite we stayed at in our 40 days touring New Zealand. Lovely green grass next to the sea. Tranquil with the lap of the waves on the seashore. Fun watching the resident Oyster Catchers on the beach. It’s a DOC site, so the facilities will be sparse. That said the loos were clean and smell less, there were showers, these are of course cold. It was heaven back to basics.

Beautiful scenery awesome location for a campsite. The road in is amazing if you like a twisty winding almost race track style road , but once here there are lots of facilities, cold showers , no power but plenty of space to pitch up an relax in the spring months , be sure to check the weather before you plann ti set off as it is extremely bleak when the rain and wind hits from the coast . All in all very picturesque. Good campsite.

we camped for one night, and this has been the best, clean and decent camp ground we’ve been during our Northland trip..with clean toilet (biodegradable), cold and strong showers and quiet campers.. the DOC staff provides plastic for rubbish (they charge $2) and very friendly and assisted us when we need something.. the sand is not so nice though but I love the sunset.. We plan to come back and stay for more days...

Beautiful spot. Some great beachfront sites for camping. Toilets and cold showers available, plus a rubbish and recycling centre. Good walks and good swimming at half to full tide. Sheltered from easterlies on the harbour side. 15 dollars per person per night. Easy small boat launching. Saw plenty of fish jumping in the bay.

We had an amazing couple of nights at this camping ground! Rachel was just lovely, the advice about the local area was great. Very peaceful spot with tame ducks, nesting Oyster Catchers and chatty Kiwi!

Loved it! Ideal for families with little kids. Our kids slept in the tent while we were finishing dinner and having a drink by the beach. Lots of grass for our crawling baby. Beach perfect for little kids (no waves). Showers super cleaned and the couple looking after the facilities in Christmas 2019 were extra nice (super proactive to help or just chat) thanks!

Best campsite in the North Island, we reckon. I phoned and booked only a few days out and they only had one site left, which ended up being prime real estate right on the beachfront. Great walks directly from the campsite, beach isn't too rough for the kids and lots to see and do. We also saw the most stunning sunset one of the nights we were there, the whole campsite sat on the beachfront and watched the sun go down. Unfortunately we now live too far away to make the trek again, but will always compare other camping trips to this one!

Picturesque, remote spot. We enjoyed camping here. Safe beach for the younger children and lots of rock pools for the older children to explore. Birds of all kinds are in close proximity. The sunset view from up the hill is stunning.

Lovely sheltered family orientated camping ground. Featuring clean facilities, lovely grassed sites, a beach with lots of shells to collect, warm water and even a couple of rope swings. Classic kiwi campsite. We even did the 1.5 hour walk around the heads which was extremely enjoyable and not too taxing. Would highly recommend. The camp hosts were very friendly.

Facilities are well maintained (though they only have cold showers), and the location is wonderful. The beach is usable through high and low tide and gradually slopes so it's ideal for kids. If you dont mind being away from civilization, then this is the place for you :)

Such a beautiful little bay worthy of the windy roads. Stunning sunrise and a beautiful cove to walk around. Hosts were absolutely superb. They have a little shop with the basics at very good prices, but you will need to stock up on food in Whangarei as it is the closest for the chain supermarkets 40mins to an hour away. An added bonus they have a little coffee house and my chai latte was on point 👌 would definitely recommend to one and all ❤️

It's a long, windy drive from anywhere but this reduces the number of day visitors (if you don't like crowds). Great place for relaxing and if there is wind, I suggest be a bit sheltered away from the waterfront.

Puriri Bay lovely Doc campground. You Have to book a beach front site as it is so popular. Get Doc camp manager TO CHECK COMPUTER ....for sites as THIS campsite has a very complicated booking system.

Nice spot. But don't come here if your Muslim or your wife wears a head scarf or sari, which mine doesn't not a middle eastern tie. Lady at the front was blantently islamopobic and racist I'm guessing as well. Making a comment on people who are Muslim and women who wear head scarfs. I'm glad the people we were with just gave her blank look. DOC needs to choose wise who they have represent there departments. Absolutely disgusting.
