Definitely worth a visit, a beautiful beach with decent waves, soft and comfortable sand with a spectacular view (perfect for pictures).
The walk to cathedral cove is 30-40 minutes with lots of incline and decline. Definitely can work up a bit of a sweat in the sun. Most of the walk has shade. Can do the walk in jandals, even barefoot if you're brave. Would recommend walking the track in shoes and bring along slippers for the beach, along with water as well.

BEAUTIFUL ❤️
I headed down here from Auckland and absolutely loved it.
Lovely walk down from the parking lot to the beach ☺️
It wasn't too busy and the weather was lovely...I will definitely be back soon.
A.
We got engaged here. The scenery is mesmerising.

Cathedral Cove Marine Reserve, or Te Whanganui-a-Hei, as it is known in Maori, runs from the northern end of Hahei Beach to Cook Bluff Scenic Reserve. The cave and beach was used as the tunnel through which the Pevensie children first re-enter Narnia in the movie version of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Walking takes around 30-45 min from carpark to cove, grade 4, but it is much easier to use boats or ferries which takes only 5-10 min from city area. Must to see. Rare and spectacular. Weekends is crowded so better to go on weekdays.
D.
a beautiful natural cave, known for its arch and passway to the otherside onto the beach. you may recall it from the movie like chronicles of narnia. lovely 45 mins hike all the way to it from the parking.
V.
A lovely natural cave famed for its arch and passageway to the other side of the shore. One part of “The Chronicles of Narnia” movie was filmed there. It's a wonderful 45-minute hike from the parking lot. You may sweat and tired at the end but it is definitely worthy. Comparee to other hikes around the world this one is quite easy.
T.
Awesome white sand beach. We parked at the car park provided then go by bus up to the drop off point to start the walk going to cathedral cove.
The walk was approximately an hour from the drop off point and there was a few places to stop by for look out and photograph.
This beauty is one of the most visited places in Coromandel Peninsula.
The walk to the cove is accessible from Hahei Beach and from the car park.
C.
Amazing!! The walk was great. Lots of literal ups and downs that provide plenty of rest. And when you get to cathedral cove. Goodness it is gorgeous!! So worth the hike. Wish we had time to check out the other stops along the way. The water is so blue and clear. I want to kayak around the next time I visit!
E.
Love this place, if you get chance go for the sunrise! On a clear day it's spectacular!
C.
Visited the beautiful cathedral Cove with our three children (9yrs, 5yrs and 3yrs). Got a ride from the shuttle from the carpark which is pretty cheap and definitely the way to go... Honestly the walk from the main carpark is huge so I definitely recommend the shuttle. The walk from the drop off point took a good hour with the small kids. The paths are in excellent condition. Plenty of sand, sun and beautiful scenery. Longdrop toilets are there and are gross so use the ones at the carpark before you go.
S.
40 mins walk to this beautiful paradise...

This is one of the most photographed spots in all of New Zealand and it’s no wonder why.

Best hidden NZ secret. Visit this beach even in winter.

B.
Beautiful and cheap place to visit in summer
S.
A 30-45 mins hike down to the cave. Carry plenty of water and food if you plan to stay long as there are no facilities in the area. Neither is there a toilet, so be prepared. The cave itself is scenic and would recommend to visit on a weekday or in off season as summers and weekends tend to get a bit crowded.
M.
I love this place. I have never seen such a beautiful place ever in my life. Felt like i should just spend my life their itself. Breath taking views. Awesome place. Loved it. Blue water, high waves, big stones. Lovely, beautiful, awesome, fantastic. Thank you.
M.
It’s the place which could have saw in dream only. Wonderful natural reserve and wonderful experience. All you need is perfect feet as you have to walk 40 min to that place one way. Also walkway is steep a hilly too. You if love walk it’s amazing place else you can go as much as you can and come back. Photos and videos can show you the natural beauty of this place. If coming from Auckland city also long drive and zig zag roads. But worth watching
P.
This is one of the most beautiful place that you have to visit if you happen to visit the north island of New Zealand. The walk takes about a hour or so (one-way) with moderate difficulty but well worth it. This place is on NZ AA Must-Do's list - highly recommended : )
B.
one of the top 10 to do things in newzealand , quite a hike of 45 minutes from the ground , but my god its worth to see the cove when u reach there . cathedral cove location famous for movie hollywood narnia was shooting there . u can also get water taxi if u dont want to hike to cove from ground . there was used be car park at top but now they stopped so either u can hike from ground or catch the water taxi. amazing beach .very high waves good for swimmers and beach lover
M.
This is one of the most visited natural attractions in all of New Zeland! This marine reserve offers an excellent strolling path that will in the end carry you to the Cathedral Cove beach. The best strolling path begins at Hahei Beach. It takes around 45 minutes to walk from Hahei Beach to the Cathedral Cove. Along the way, you can explore other beautiful beaches such as Gemstone Bay and Sting Rays Bay!
N.
Amazingly scenic walk. Best to go early in the morning, park your car at one of the three free car park. Catch a bus from the car park ( runs every 15 mins) to the top of the park and walk down hill. Family family easy stroll, must visit if you are in New Zealand
R.
Despite the long walk, the place is spectacular! I didn't like that the taxi boat stopped very near the place to swimming.
R.
My advice: park at or near Hahei beach. The carpark lot at the top of Grange Road is closed annually. Then from Hahei beach there are water taxis available: adults 15bucks one way kids 10bucks cash or eftpos available. Its about a 5minute journey by water taxi, departs from Hahei beach, between the yellow flags, u cant miss it. Drops off directly at the big hole in the rock (Cathedral Cove) and operates every 30mins. Alternatively u can walk up Grange Road which has some nice views and lookouts however going uphill that way is quite a hike esp if u have children or elderly with u. It can take up to 30mins to walk up to the carpark itself, then another 40mins walking the track from the carpark that leads to the cove itself. Therefore I highly recommend the water taxi journey. If you want to save money for another trip back, you can walk the track to return all the way to Hahei beach and save 15bucks which is what I did and it worked out great. The track itself is up and down so take ur time and have water with you. The cathedral cove beach itself was slightly underwhelming. I assumed in photos it looked much more magnificent however once seeing it in person it was probably about two storeys high. The beach itself is also small, probably a 7mins walk from one end to the other. Also recommend to not go during the weekend as would probably b v crowded in a small space. Check the weather before u go. It is still a beautiful place, just smaller and less to do than expected. There are also some good water activities/tours that operate between the cove/Hahei beach/hot water beach/Whitianga so I recommend to search up those places as well if u r planning to spend a good days worth around there.
U.
Nature has so much to offer!!! beautiful scenic views. I enjoyed spending my time peacefully here. You have to attach yourself spiritually to admire the beauty of the place.
L.
Wicked place nature made right here!
Enjoyed this eye candy a lot, not only because of the Dali-fan in me.
Can get very crowded though.
A.
Absolutely beautiful. The top car park is small so go early. The 40min walk is well worth it but can be taxing if you are unfit. Highly recommend kayaking it, its way better....
M.
Need to be fit as steep. No toilets or fresh water so need to be well prepared. Beautiful for photos and sea swimming. A lot of people but didn't feel overcrowded. Parking CRAZY. We paid a local to park on lawn for day. These go quickly.
S.
Reasonably high efficiency attraction if carpark is available at the peak
M.
A unique landscape in Coromandel peninsula
45 minutes walk from the car park that really worth it. Take good amount of water with sun cream
v.
Cathedral cove is a popular kiwi holiday spot. Best time to visit is in the Summer. Beautiful beach with great views.
A.
Words can not describe how beautiful this place is, the photos look incredible but in person it’s breathtaking. You have to walk quite a way to it but it’s worth the trip.
R.
Absolutely stunning. We caught the ferry across so this photo is the view from boat to land. Don’t even think about visiting Cathedral Cove “the 8th wonder in the world “ JUST DO IT!! I heard the walk down is around 60mis and I would have done it if I hadn’t had a recent injury.
T.
Stunning beaches and beautiful blue waters! Be prepared for a moderate 30 minute walk from the car park to the cathedral cove arch, but totally worth it!
#.
Great place to relax and enjoy the beauty of NZ. Gets busy very quickly with limited parking at the very top. However good little cafe up there when I went. Reasonable pricing :)
S.
A great walk along the coast line (we power walked it and it’s a fantastic cardio workout) to get to this pristine beach, amazing views and clear waters and the cave is a rare and stunning sight.
M.
A scenic place with an incredible trek !!!
T.
The walk down there takes about 40 mins, but the route is scenic and the trail is really good. The only negative thing is that you have to pay for parking.
S.
A beautiful place at the far north of New Zealand. Ideal for beach and sun visitors. The water is not so cold, better to visit in summer!
C.
The Walk down to the cove is quite a long one but it is so worth it! its a stunning place, it was quite quiet when we went too which made it even better! recommend a visit!
j.
This place is an absolute incredible place to come and explore !
I stayed for two weeks in coromandel and it was such a blessing and made me fall in love with this beautiful country even more !
There’s a bit of a walk to get down to cathedral cove itself but are some awesome places you can stop off at on the way !!
Definitely one to add to the bucket list for everyone else in New Zealand
R.
Absolutely beautiful! The walk is worth every step
J.
Nice spot well worth the steep walk down the path and steps to get to the beach with some good viewing platforms along the way. but the car park situation is a mess with too many people trying to park and not enough spaces. there should be better signage in town saying that the carpark is full and take the shuttle
L.
Great little hike up to the gorgeous cove. Some of it is uphill and can be taxing but definitely worth it!
S.
This is one of the most photographed spots in all of New Zealand and it’s no wonder why.
D.
Great taxi service, affordable 👌 Gorgeous views, well worth the walk. Fit or not!
S.
40 mins walk to this beautiful paradise...
I.
Catheral Cove is ok
The view to get there (from car park) is very beautiful
J.
Cathedral cove really is nice! It is a bit of a hike from the car park, as the on designated for it (at the top) is always full.. Even when arriving up top its still a 45min walk to the cove!
Still very nice, and enjoyed the day.
C.
Very nice view. The parking lot was not opened. Need to park far away.
R.
A magnificent natural cave with a waterfall and a beautiful beach.
K.
Fully enjoyed our walk along the scenic pathways.
Had a enjoyable ride up to top in the bus shuttle, only $5 return ,and the driver was very entertaining an set the scene in humorous commentary... was a great day out... take your swimming gear as a lovely swimming area once your there an very safe for the little ones ,young an old
Note ... take good comfortable walking shoes an clothes, as its a 45min walk , up an down hills an some stairs ...but a very safe and well maintained path , well worth the time .
N.
Best hidden NZ secret. Visit this beach even in winter.
B.
Beautiful and cheap place to visit in summer
A.
Truly a beautiful place! Was a difficult walk but not impossible 😍 Finally did it! I can check this off my bucket list
S.
Waves are perfect and worth the drive from Auckland
S.
Nice natural view, love it really...
A.
This beach is so nice to visit, it is definitely a must see. We enjoyed taking the bus from the carpark to the site which was a lot easier (would have been quite a long walk). The beach itself is clean and the colour if the water is just beautiful.
D.
That's nature at its best. And indeed it is the best and not the rest
K.
The beach is beautiful but the walk is hell on earth, much worse than alluded to here - it's never flat and has quite a number steep ups and downs. I'm not unfit and I found it quite difficult. Wear good footwear and take a lot of water. Please note there is a part with quite a lot of steps - it's definitely not wheelchair friendly. As lovely as the beach was, I wouldn't say it's worth the aggro of getting there. The car park is closed during summer so you can either use the park and ride in town, or some residents on the hill will let you park in their drive for a fee (do not just park in anyone's drive!!) We paid $10 to do this and was well worth it.
It is also worth getting there as early as possible if you're after a good photo op, as the morning sun there is amazing but mainly to beat the crowds as it will get busy in good weather. We got to the beach at 7.30am and the beach was fairly quiet for an hour or so.
Also we saw no sign of water taxis but that may have been somewhere out of sight for all we know.
K.
Beautiful walk and beautiful place. Note: Thieves operating in the big car park. Ideal for them because most people are not back for 2-3 hours. I wish the council provided some semblance of security - CCTV/guards/patrols etc.
G.
Beautiful place with great scenic views
A.
Beautiful, a thirty minutes walk from the parking, worth every step. The beach is secluded and the white sand and the clear water very enticing. I should have taken the bathers with us, didn't think of. It's a must see.
L.
Walk is very hilly, steep sections going up and down several times, with a long steep section of steps. Many people made the scenery very touristy. Bring water and sunblock or get burnt to a crisp. Recommend water taxi.
Honestly the beach in the town is just as pretty and hell of a lot easier to get to, and much less busy.
H.
Amazing views and good walk.
However very limited parking options (people living close by are using the situation and charging you if you would like to park in their property).
I wouldn’t recommend to go during high season - a lot of people and need to wait in line to get the option to go down the stairs. If you are there then anyways then join the at the beginning of the trail and don’t waist your time to go all the way to Cathedral Cove
C.
Beautiful cathedral cove best visited at low tide when you can walk through the arch. Bit of a hike (over an hour ) from the park and ride car park but worth it. Walk via the neighbouring beach which is an easier route, Or if you are not feeling quite so energetic there is a bus for a few dollars but still a 30/40 min walk down which is quite steep in places.
P.
If you like trekking then this is the place. The path is real awesome and full of Adventure. There is a dedicated car parking outside the town and the bus takes you to the starting point. The bus service is every 20 min. The caves in the end are amazing and the breeze is very smoothing.
E.
Cathedral Cove is a very beautiful part of the Marine Reserve. We had went there on a Tuesday morning and the water taxi was not available however the 45 min walk to the cove was well worth it. The sights are amazing and the beach looks very nice. Remember to bring wear your swimsuits if you are going there! (it's the one thing I wish I had done when I was going there)
N.
A must visit. Very beautiful
E.
🏖🏝😘😘
C.
Worth doing! Bare in mind that the car park is closed during summer so you have to find a space in town and then walk for 10-15mins to start the walk to Cathedral Cove. Then it takes 35-40 minutes to get there. Is steep at times but totally doable and the beach is amazing! Beware of the gulls, they will try to steal your food!
A.
We drove into town not knowing about the park and ride. Very confusing because we went late in the day, and there were not many people around. We started walking, I asked a local how far was it? "Just 20 mins up the hill." Yeah right local lady. We we were lucky and found last shuttle bus up to BEGINNING of track to cove. Then it's a quite a hike to the beach, 35mins. Also being later, around 6pm, the shadows were across the rocks, not as pretty as postcards. But still amazing. Go early!
M.
Great views and awesome day out; be prepared for a nice long long workout before the awesome views.
O.
Great place for taking impress foto
A.
An amazing walk from parking space for about 30 to 45 minutes depending on your speed and agility. The reserve is beautiful a place for a day out and picnic spot for family. It is not wheelchair friendly so can be bit difficult for elderly people. Otherwise a must place to visit in Coromandal Peninsula. Would love to visit again soon.
G.
40-45 min trail down to the cove (or 30 mins at a brisk pace). Car park is open but is paid ($15 for 4 hours). Great time to visit as no summer crowds
C.
Loved spending time at Cathedral cove. It's a cave with a beautiful beach. On a sunny day, the color of water is dark blue which I fell in love with. Beach is super clean and I was able to collect a few shells from here. You need to park your car far from the beach (you will see the boards saying free parking for cathedral cove) as there is no designated parking at cathedral cove. After parking the car, you need to take a shuttle which charges $5 for return. The place where shuttle drops you, it's a 30 min walk/ hike to the cathedral cove beach. Please note that last shuttle is at 6 PM. We ditched our return shuttle and bought boat tickets at cathedral cove which went through the water, and dropped us at another beach which was at a walking distance from the parking.
L.
Amazing place, that is well worth the walk from the parking area. We had very nice weather when we went, so obviously there was lots and lots of people on the move that day. But crowded or not, the fairy tale -like rock formations are extremely worth seeing.
K.
Beautiful hidden beach , it’s a bit of a walk to get to the beach from the drop off area. Make sure you take water to drink and stay hydrated and it pays to wear something comfortable.
T.
Nice beach. Photogenic natural cove popular by the name cathedral cove. About 45 mins walk from car park. Bring lots of water and food as there are no shops around. Finding parking on a holiday could be a challenge, but you can park in few driveways for some fees. A good one day picnic destination.
C.
Nice place and worth the walk from the carpark. Feels more of an attraction to visit than somewhere to spend the day.
Slightly spoiled by boats shipping groups of tourists onto the beach periodically. There are hardly any parking spaces too.
B.
Iconic. Combine a boat tour and check out Hot Water Beach and Pauanui at the same time. There are also many islands nearby that you can visit by ferry or water taxi. You’ll love it!
M.
We visited Hahei Beach as a family with 3 children. I cannot believe on such a beautiful morning and such a stunning beach with amazing views, we were the only people on the entire beach! It has lovely white sand and calm pristine waters. We spent a good 1.5 hours here, our girls digging in the sand and running along the waters edge. They seemed so carefree here. Having all this safe outdoor space and the freedom, our girls were in their element. Give any child a stretch of beach and they are entertained for hours.
I.
Lovely beachside walk.
G.
Beautiful coastal walk. Car Park is $15 for 4 hours or a 12min walk up the hill when parking down the bottom carpark.
M.
One of the best beaches to swim at in New Zealand. The wave action is so enjoyable. The 45 minute walk to get there is soon rewarded with prestine surroundings. Pohutukawa trees overhanging dramatic cliffs with turquoise water lapping the sandy beach. The giant cathedral arch connecting the two beaches presents an awesome photo opportunity.
R.
Best water tour activity
G.
Fantastic FREE activity in the Coromandel Peninsula area
35-50min walk through light bush along a asphalted walkway, a few ups and downs, but accessible to anyone, even the unfit, or prams (last 50mtrs is a staircase though)
Beautiful clear water greets you after the walk.
There is a toilet hidden back into the trees and hill bank, on the walk staircase side of the rock
Take PLENTY of water, it can be a hot walk
An alternative is the water taxi, ... A good option is to take plenty of food and water via boat and walk back.
If return trip via the water taxi, there are regularly trips and you are free to return when you like (subject to the timetable)
Next stop, another FREE activity
Hotwater beach, Google it ... !
W.
A 30-45mins walk to get to the beach but it is definitely worth it. There are also a couple lookout points along the way (and some hidden pathways too - check campermate). The water is cold though! (I'd say it's freezing comparing to Indonesia's sea water temperature)
v.
Very beautiful beach and a good place to spend some time. The walk from the carpark is moderately hard especially coming back. The carpark itself is very small and it's very unlikely you will find parking during the day. You can park in Hahei and take the inexpensive shuttle from Hahei beach to the carpark alternatively you can take the water taxi that goes from Hahei beach to the cove directly. There are no shops and no drinking water around the beach so you will need to pack your day bag.
M.
Breathtaking! Hike was up and downs hills on a path and it took about 45 minutes. There is also a water taxi you can pay for which is $15 to take you back to Haihei Beach instead of walking both ways. Or walk both ways lol Shuttle bus at the carpark costs $5, during the summer months you have to park in the far carpark.
M.
Superb beach, waterfall and cave at one end, walk through hole in rock to Sphinx rock in the second bay. Path from carpark now has asphalt track all the way, with only stairs in the last 50m
J.
Very beautiful and awesome view . Very good experience at this place
G.
Such a beautiful place to walk and enjoy. Even though it's look 1.15 hour walk you don't feel like it as you enjoy the fabulous view throughout.
T.

Truly amazing remembering the movie “Narnia”. Not easy route, a bit of a challenge particularly if you have kids and planning to stay for a while, having meals and spending time in the beach. The trick would be bring no loads in going down. We enjoyed the beach so much. We were pleased to have explored this a must to go to tourist attraction.

(Translated) Magical, surreal place, breathtaking beauty. If you visit the North Island, this place is a must. The hiking trail is worth all your hard work. When you arrive down, paradise is open to you. You can bathe, picnic, take a nap.
I also advise you to visit this ancestral place by the sea. You will have other points of view, all more beautiful than the others. To do absolutely !!!!!

Although the mountain road is close and high, it is full of beautiful scenery
Of course natural volcanic activity plus wind and sea erosion
Creates this unique beauty

(Translated) Super super beautiful, sunny beach with blue sky and sparkling sea water. The indicator shows that you will reach the bay in thirty minutes, but it will take about forty-five minutes to walk. Unless your feet are fast, you should be breathing like a dog!

(Translated) A really fantastic place! No matter how often you come here, it's always nice. This time we didn't run from the place, but parked our car in the car park and drove up the mountain for $ 5 per person and from there went a hiking trail up to two beaches and another path leads to Cathedral Cove. In January the tourist season is probably very high and you can notice this very quickly on the beach - people over people!
(Original)

(Translated) Beautiful place! Access is a bit tiring but you have several viewpoints along the way. Narnia was filmed here. I loved there are many flowers, trees, sea, caves, a small waterfall and even sheep (they are in a private farm that is on the way) Recommended!

(Translated) Really nice location, but also well attended. If you want to be on your own or if you want to take pictures without disturbing people, you should come very early. You can get there by water taxi, which most visitors do. This runs from 10 a.m. and costs 15 NZD each way. Alternatively, there is a footpath that should take 45 minutes. I did not go this one.
(Original)
