This is a lovely area to visit. So peaceful. My friend and I walked around from one end to the other taking in the scenery. Then went back to the main area and had a picnic morning tea. Sat watching the river, enjoying the birdsong and watching the coming and going of swimmers, kayakers and other visitors.

No running water nor electricity making this a great place for a taste of camping. No bon fire allowed but a BBQ stove with charcoal was all we need for the marshmallows. A dip in the Huka river was a gift in a hot day. Quiet at night and all we can hear was Tui singing. Great location too as it’s really close to Taupo city centre. Enjoyed our 2 nights stay there and hope we can visit again soon. You can pick the spot for your tent if arrive early afternoon. But people still finding place ok even arriving at midnight. Enjoy!

Lovely place to stay , pulled in late in the afternoon . Went for a walk around after happy hour and another walk in the morning. Very quiet through out the night . Nice clean toilets down by the Waikato River. There was a tent , 5 caravans and 3 motorhomes .
K.
Nice and quiet, the water is beautiful. Nice for a swim although I wouldn't doit alone and the current can be tricky. Very friendly ducks which was nice
S.
Freedom camping is good here had a few family members that have stayed a few nights and swimming in the river is good for the kids if you find the right spots.
B.
Nice day area by the river and free camping allowed in the higher carpark. There is a rope swing into the river but beware the current is strong and the river deep. Just down the road from Huka Falls and Taupo town is minutes away. 😊
D.
Was such a wonderful idea having a freedom camping spot run by security. Love the scenary and people are friendly. Long drops and portacoms are kept clean and upto date on tp. Loved it honestly. Just a shame that they didn't open more space down towards the river up specially around new years when the place was jammed pack with campers. They've got all this extra place down the bottom end it would've had more people further apart (covid things you know) i will definitely go back i just hop they open the other camping spots up.

Great freedom camping spot. Two sets of toilets that are cleaned daily. Not too far from Taupō but you feel like you are away from the city. Great swimming in the river. Small inlets to avoid the current. Easier enough to get a spot if arriving mid afternoon or even evening- very peaceful during the day. Lots of security checks each day from different organisations so it feels very safe. A few short bush and road tracks to make the most of too.
D.
Great spot to swing into the river or just soak ya feet after a long day of hikes. Spot to park up and camp for up to 4 nights. Hot springs 1 hour slow walk away or 8 minute drive. Bathrooms clean for the most part. Gets a bit messy when a bunch of local kids came thru but kids are gross anyways.
t.
It was awesome that we could stay there in our bus. And the water was so clear, swimming in the river. Amazing spot
A.
Worth an overnight stay. Friendly campers, nice river setting. A popular spot as lots of holiday makers, some tenting, motor homing, caravaning, vanning etc
J.
As far as freedom camping goes, this hits all the marks - location, location location. It is definitely a winner. The facilities are sparse so come prepared. But it is a def keeper.

Just popped in for some peace and quiet. I wish it was a bit later that they might lock the gate. Tuis and ducks fossicking around it was lovely
K.
Very nice, picturesque place not far from Huka falls. Overnight free camp not far away right next to the river as well
D.
A good sheltered stop-off spot for a river swim before heading north to rotorua or Hamilton. Public toilets also here.
No camping.
I.
Camping grounds and choice swimming spot, veer right to park up for the day, or continue into camping grounds if you're moving in for a stay.
T.
Free camping, plenty of space, really close to the river where you can relax and read a book or take a swim. Close to the city and other tourist attrctions. The gate stays open indefinitely I think, and the gate leading down to the river closes for cars at 6 pm.
B.
Beautiful place it's a must see loved every moment of waking up to the awa an getting to just walk down to the clear water
P.
A very nice scenic freedom campground beside the Waikato River with toilet facilities and room for an assortment of RV's and cars.
G.
Good place to stop after long drive. Enjoy the view and have a quite dip in the water.
Didn't know about this place till one the guys told us about it.
S.
Awesome freedom camping spot. Cool swimming hole down at the river and nice clean porterloos
B.
This place has had a facelift and is awesome! Great for staying overnight or having a picnic during they day. Good facilities here over summer!
C.
Heaps of parking spaces for overnight camping, had portoloos. It was very popular, easy to get in and out
A.
A beautiful spot for a picnic and wedding photos. A place we have done both recently. Absolutely beautiful river views and peaceful quiet
N.
We camped here for the night and we were happy that there was plenty of space. The free camping area is not next to the river - it is up by the road. The beautiful spot next to the river is a no camping area and locked between 6pm and 7am - which is a bit unfortunate as it would be an amazing place to camp up. The toilets, bins and dish cleaning area are all in the no-camping area by the river. We tried to drive down to the river at 7.30am but they hadn’t unlocked the gates yet.
A.
Beautiful pristine place. Forgot the togs but could have easily been seduced by the water to jump in. Magic
T.
Taupos little gem, an awesome place to have in the hot pools. It's a little too busy these days but still worth it. You can carry on the walk to Huka Falls and back, or just carry on walking to Aratiatia, there are a lot of tracks linking up, so you can walk all day plus. Great toilets and changing rooms. You can have a coffee at the little cafe if its b4 4pm too.
D.
Neat place to get river access to Huka River. It is quite deep though, not like a beach. There is a huge drop in the water. Beautiful colours, and the water is crystal clear. The free camping site is basic with toilets and a dishwashing site only. Perfect place to stay and enjoy time with nature.
A.
Beautiful place - great spot to jump in for a swim too!
C.
A beautiful area beside the river to sit and relax.
G.
Love it down here.
Freedom camping area was semi full, looked all peaceful and tidy considering the many Van's down there. Walking down by the water was refreshing as it was a very hot evening.
V.
Had a great time camping there 🤣❤
c.
Such a lovely place wish they had woman and men toilets
C.
Freedom camping site with portaloos on site plue long drop toilets. Also a sink to wash your dishes. Such a beautiful location, just a short drive to Taupō city centre. Totally recommend.
L.
Very nice and quiet place where you can sit down, your feet in the water, with only birds and ducks for company. Also nice spot for a swim and there's a freecamp just beside. My only regret is that after 6pm a barrier closes and the sign that warns you is kinda hidden behind branches. We had to call the after hour number and pay a fee for them to open the door for us to get the car out. I just wish the sign was a bit more visible. Thankfully the security person came back quite fast to open the fence for us which is nice.
G.
Was pouring with rain would like to visit on a fine day
V.
Absolutely beautiful
P.
Nice and hidden, away from the busy and touristic huka falls
E.
Nice spot 👌I visited round 2.pm onwards, when the sun is shining just gorgeous, quite and peaceful .
K.
Overall nice place. River nearby for a quick swim. River has very strong currents especially at the rope swing spot, so might not be ideal for everyone, especially children should be careful.
R.
Great weekend. Cool people met.
A.
Freedom camping nearby, great place to hangout with friends, cookout or have bbq then a quick dip at the river (if you don't mind the cold). Toilet, dishwashing station in vicinity.
T.
Quite a spectacle for a quick, free sight seeing trip in Taupo. Get your sunblock for summer and keep the kids safe as the sun is scorching and the rapids are extremely powerful!
S.
This is a beautiful scenic place, the reserve is about 13.5 hectares along the Waikato River down the road from Wairakei Tourist Park and famous Huka Falls, lots to do in this area.
S.
Back to nature and childhood with the blue river here.

(Translated) A great Freedom Campsite where there is a lot going on. Nevertheless it is 4 stars because the location to Lake Taupo, the city itself and the Huka Falls is so perfect. Tip: Take an air mattress and insert it into the Waikato River about 100m behind the bridge of Tongariro St and let yourself float. You drift past swinging ropes (high fun factor), you can watch the Taupo Bungy Jump from the water and get into the hot spa area free of charge because you come from the water. The end point is directly at the campsite.
