Reviews of Te Aroha Mountain Gold Mining Walking Tracks

Must do of you're in the area. All the walks are well signposted and indicate times too.
Walks range from 30min to 4hrs+. Lots of locals so be sure to get there early as the carpark can fill up quite quickly and are small.
There's heaps of information boards all around to read up on and understand what's happened in the 1880's onwards when the mine was in operation.
Would recommend doing the shorter walks with kids up to the butler incline, its quite steep.
M.
Great place for a day walk. Lots to explore. Lots of history here and in beautiful bush. Take warm clothes and a rain jacket as it is in the shade and it takes time to get out once you are in. It is useful to take a touch for explanation too.
There are a good combination of tracks from easy to steep all with very informative reading boards along the way so worth a read to understand the history.
Most tracks have signs, and time directions. Shorter tracks are 30 minutes one way, longer tracks 2.5 hours and you are climbing up slow angles so worth taking food and drinks on these longer ones.
Cell phone coverage is in and out and you are in mature bush where the weather can change with no notice so worth taking the time to be prepared.
The tracks are in reasonable condition. There is a rock climbing face if you are into carrying some base climbing gear too.
The mine shafts are wet floor with roof falls in reasonable condition.
There is good parking. But seems to be local cars coming into see what cars are parked there as our surveillance picked up the same cars coming looking around and leaving. So I wouldn't leave possessions in your vehicle.
However well worth exploring.

Te Aroha is the town of Love..The mountain is popular for hiking people who want to do the hard climbs..however 3km from Te Aroha township is Wairongomai Valley. It's my favorite place for easy going bush walking, and has a stream nearby at the carpark to cool off in summer.. There are incredible views from the carpark across the farmlands, and the weekends are busy here for family walking together or hiking groups come here. As a leader, I bring people here, because of the old gold mining history and ecology of the area..the tracks are well designed and signposted for all to enjoy, and a large map on the day as at the carpark can be photographed for ease of exploring along the tracks. Some loops are roughly 4 hours or less if you're interested in visiting Wairongomai Valley. I highly recommend walking up Butler's Incline which is about an hour away from the carpark. Butler's is an old relic from the goldmine days, where they brought down the big rocks from the mountains using a Railway track, and now it's used as an invigorating walk from the bottom to the top..climbing about 400m in around 30 minutes.. The views are awesome at the top, and you can return to carpark via the High Level Track which is fairly easy..

This is such an amazing place to visit. A fantastic walk BUT a very steep climb up to the summit. We'll worth the challenge. Highly recommend this walk.

Absolutely love these trails especially Butlers incline. Never climbed May Queen incline though.
Never thought I'd be fit enough to accomplish any such trails due to my failing Hakarimata's miserably and traumatizing myself over stairs for a good while but this was perfect for me (light to med fitness level). Accomplished all trails except above Quartzeville.
These trails I find easier on my ankles and achilles and I love the entire terrain. The scenery is epic and the history of the area is just awesome. Very friendly local folk walking the trail. Love it

One of the best trekking experience we’ve had, easy for kids and not to intense for adults. The best part was climbing over the train tracks up to the very top of the mountain, where the cables to pull and push the carts were. It is quite steep, but doable even with a 4 year old kid 👦. To make things smoother, weather was nice, not too cold and not warm at all. We returned from the track instead of the way in. Drank water directly from the waterfall without any problem after. We did the short version and will come back to do the long haul. Worth every step of it!
H.
Lovely track an waterfall
Even got to see 2 wild goats an 2 tui playing while we ate lunch in bush
J.
Beautiful tracks. Lots of history. Great views. The inclines are worth checking out.
A.
Really nice track. Can get a bit slippery when it's been raining. Lots of different level tracks. Everything interconnected. We found it useful to take a photo of the map at the beginning as some of the track signs are a bit confusing with some inconsistent times.
If you want to do Butlers Incline they suggest walking up it and not down it to help stop erosion (but the sign only told you at the top of Butlers incline, which we think should have been at the car park sign)
There is a toilet, turn right at the first fork on the track from the car park. It's a long drop and I don't think it has a door, so you may surprise a few ppl as they walk round the corner.
We will be coming back to Waiorongomai Valley to walk up to Buck Rock. It's the rock you can see jutting out of the mountain. A local said that it's a bit of a scramble but the vew is worth battling the bush and gorse bushes for.
J.
Pretty nice hike expect to step on rocks with flowing water to pass some areas. Was a bit slippery in some parts, but overall it was a nice and easy.
J.
Amazing scenery very hard climb if you do butler's incline. For the fit and agile.
d.
Amazing place defiantly need a top physical performance and look at coming early if you want to visit all the spots , took us 9 hours to do most of the track
C.
Beautiful scenery and view. Gorgeously clear stream, interesting ruins to explore and good walking tracks through native bush.
o.
This is a great place for a walk. Lots of well built tracks, water falls, and points of interest. As an old mining site there is plenty of history here. The native trees and bush are beautiful with plenty of birds and scenery. Easy to spend a day doing walks here and finish up in town for a spa and massage and a good meal.
D.
Wow...what a perfect challenge. The Butlers Incline was the best test on my strengths on coping with elevations.
K.
Great walk for the family, reasonable fitness required to be successful in completing your walk
S.
845 steps at a steep gradient that makes walking on your hands the only option . Great walk to the top with some stunning scenery. FyI- the long drop is pretty gross and signage along the way isn't very good so take a photo of the map in the carpark ( its helpful) we took our 7 year old and she was able to walk it with few moans and groans at the end but foraging for quartz treasures keept her going.
Pack some lunch, drinkbottle and wear good supportive shoes and take a jacket as it gets a bit breezy and cold in the thicket.
Stop and read the info along the way there is some interesting history in those hills.
C.
Great walk with easy gradient and wide path but if you need a hard walk then can do the butlers incline at top which is a hard 20 min solid climb up railway. Great river for picnics.
F.
A fantastic variety of tracks to choose from. You can do easy and gentle slopes checking out much of the old Gold mines and workings. Plenty of old tunnels and drives scattered about. Warning, be careful of old hidden mine shafts. If you stick to the marked tracks you will be fine. There is also tough and steep tracks for this more adventurous and fitter. NOTE!! please do not take dogs into this area without a permit. Contact DOC if you are unsure of the requirements. Plenty to see and explore, enjoy.
M.
Fantastic walk in the bush through old Gold Mine and Tram works. Lots to see her both in terms of Nature and History
G.
I have been using the Waiorongomai Valley walking tracks for 7 years now. The area is very beautiful and the tracks are in good condition.
You need to clean and disinfect your boots or running shoes on entry. Facilities present, make this a comfortable and easy process.
The lower level loop is a first track to take. You'll see old tunnels, railway tracks and bridal veil waterfalls.
Higher level tracks are great to get you to the top of the Butler's Incline.
You can proceed on then, upwards to the very top of Mount Te Aroha. Many remnants of the 1886 Era gold mining ⚒ equipment remain in the Waiorongomai Valley. The method of extraction was rock crushing but it was hard to make it profitable.

Absolutely awesome if you like a mix of jungle trails and plenty of history. Spent many hours running the km's of trails, and enjoying the relic's of the past.

M.
Many tracks that work for people of all different levels of fitness. Great place to take kids. Full of historical importance.
G.
Another great walk in the Waikato.
J.
Good walk. Some level of fitness required if you wish to go all the way up through the rails.
Easy parking.
Lovely views.
K.
Love this place, very scenic...surroundings are awesome and theres a river there to swim in so double the points. Need to get rid of the long drop though...that gives an otherwise tranquill place a terrible smell and bad memories.
D.
Better signage on tracks needed.... One sign with multiple arrows isn't that clear,,, foreign tourist would struggle.... Come on doc

(Translated) It is a beautiful hiking, you have different paths and you can spend a full day traveling them. I would recommend going in a group if you want to do the more difficult trails because some parts are quite dangerous, one misstep over wet rocks and you will end up returning home in a rescue helicopter. You have to be well equipped because even though the day is hot there is so much humidity from slopes and waterfalls that you will feel cold.
