Reviews of The Pinnacles
M.
Tough hike but totally worth it for the stunning views. A lot of washed out track with large step-up's made it more difficult than it otherwise would be. Wouldn't recommend for children, especially the final scramble over boulders at the summit. 2 hours 40 minutes one way, at a good pace with plenty of stops to catch our breath ascending the endless stairs. Thought the descent would be slow owing to large sections of wet track and stepping down, but it was quicker than expected with little slipping (in hiking boots).
N.
Unbelievably amazing....
We do the pinnacles track by staying in the hut for 1 night and continue next morning for the sunrise..
There are two options to do the summit, for sunset or the sunrise.
But what I recommend is, do the sunrise.
It's take 2-3hours to the Hut and 40min to the pinnacle from the Hut.
Was worth to wake up in the morning, was quite for sunrise not too crowded as sunset and beautiful..
Definitely will come back here again if we visit Coromandel.
H.
One of the longest hike in my life! Absolutely fantastic! I climbed 20 km both ways for around 7 hours. Take lots of sun cream and water! You can stay at the Hut 🛖 if you’re planning to see the sunrise 🌅. It’s quite windy 🌬 at the top, so take care of your hat 👒.
M.
The best hike and hut stay in NZ!! So much to see and do, waterfalls, stairs, bridges, rock climbing, information boards, this was has it all
The hut is warm and equipped, fire in the common area and clean facilities. Hut warden Rob was very welcoming and polite
Would go back again and a few more times
3hrs to the hut and 30min to the pinnacles, same back
V.
Awesome walk. About 3 hours to the summit, a bit technical at the almost the very top. Descending could take 2-2,5 hours and one hell of a knee pain.
O.
As a common hiker, this is one of the best 1-2 day walks I have ever done. The hike to the hut is reasonably easy, with a cold watering hole to take a dip in. From the hut to the summit is much harder, but 100% worth it. If you are spending the night at the hut I would recommend waking up very early the next day and climb to the summit to watch the sun rise. I do it every year and will never regret it.
J.
This place is hard to beat in the north island, so much so that I’ve hiked it 3 times now. Fantastic 3-4 hour scenic hike to the summit through NZ bush. As you’d probably expect it’s a long gravel road. You can stay up at the hut near the summit, it’s an 80 bed bunking situation but it gets the job done. I would recommend this (you will have to book in advance) but go in the early afternoon so you can hike up to the summit to watch the sunset and stay overnight then wake up early the next and hike up again to be one of the first in NZ to view the sunrise, if it’s a good day it’s perfect!
M.
This place is a must to visit on the North Island! The views that open up above are breathtaking! Honestly, it's cooler than on the Great Wall of China. Our journey from the parking lot to the top took 4 hours. Some people really prefer to see sunset or sunrise at the top (if you pay in advance for an overnight stay at the foot of the mountain in the house). The last part of the way is the most difficult but the most exciting in terms of entertainment.
J.
IMPORTANT NOTE. Do not program your GPS to this location it is incorrect not sure why no one else mentioned this. The track to the hut is accessed via Kauaeranga Valley Rd, thames. The carpark is located at the end of the rd past the DOC office.
If your the type of person who generally does not enjoy long walks especially through bush, rough terrain and up climbs this walk isn't for you. If your up for a challenge then this is definitely well suited. If your staying the night and carrying your stuff (8-10kgs) with you it will take approximately 3hrs for an averagly fit individual stopping several times for a break to reach the hut. Its another 50mins from there to the summit. However if its just a day hike with minimal stuff this can easily be completed in 3hrs from the carpark to the summit. I've added a lot of pictures of the hut, the kitchen, toilet and few other places as doc did not really provide me with good info on amenities etc due to covid.
Web creek is by far the easiest way up and down, but if your up for a challenge go via Billy Goat track. Wear shoes which cushion your feet as you will be stepping on a lot of rocks and rough terrain. Please take all your rubbish with you and leave the forest and hut spotless.
J.
Getting to the top was magnificent. Yes you'll mostly see mountains but it was still amazing. The sunrise and sunset was so good that taking photos will make it look like a painting.
The only thing is that hiking was so hard. It's not advisable to bring heavy bags because of the stairs and way up. When we hiked we had big camping bags. It was alright but really tiring. If you're an adventurous person you'll like this place. If you're not, I think its still worth a try. You'll feel like you've achieved something big. 😊💕
A.
Really great hike with a nice hut about 3 hours into the trail. We opted to stay at the Dancing Creek campsite however which had 4 sites for tents and running water from a stream. The Pinnacles Summit was about 40-50 min trek starting out with lots of stairs and then the last bit was a scramble/climb up to the top navigating lots of boulders and ladders. It was really worth it. We did sunset and sunrise.
m.
Fantastic views up top but the hike up may be a little challenging for some. Hike to the hut is easier than the hike from hut to pinnacles. The hut is also fantastic with lots of amenities and I would definitely recommend spending a night, even if you don't see yourself as an outdoorsy person.
P.
We took the Webb Creek track which was an excruciating yet enjoyable three hour hike to the Pinnacles Hut. It was really an experience. The hike leads you across river streams and along the steep edges of the hill. The distance between the steps can be a bit high. I'm 5'10" yet I still find it high. So be careful and hike with slowly. Take your time. It can get slippery sometimes.
Others do a day walk. That takes approximately 4 hours to the Pinnacles Summit. 8 hours return. Wow! Kudos to you if you can do a return in one day.
As for us, my wife and I decided to stay in the Pinnacles Hut. That was another case of extraordinary experience for me. We slept at the hut for a night. Then continued our hike to the summit the following day at 6am in the morning. That is another 50 minute hike. That was enough time for us to catch the sunrise.
There are plenty of young eager souls who hike early so they can sit on top of the Pinnacles Summit as the sun rises. So if you want to be like them, bring a torch/flashlight. Six am can still be dark. Safety first. Always.
I recommend that you wear shoes suited for hiking. Bring plenty of water yet travel light - if you are doing a day trip.
Again, the experience was fantastic. Might go back and be more prepared for it. Will rest for now. Legs are sore as. Good luck!
M.
Easy 2-3 hour hike to the top. I managed to roll my ankle on the way down (stage 3 sprain, not 5 minutes from the summit) and was unable to immediately walk at all.
The ranger at the Hut set us up with accommodation for the night along with sleeping bags and enough food to get through. The next morning, after wrapping the ankle with what he provided, I made the painful 5 hour hike back down.
My new shoes have better ankle support and I will definitely be trying this again soon.
r.
Sweet day hike. About 15km round trip. Great views, pretty busy on a sunny weekend but go early and you'll beat the crowd. Option to stay at the hut and do different hikes on different days, making the hut your starting point. Will definitely go back to try it out.
O.
Beautiful walk and amazing hut. The ranger Lester welcomed us and gave us the rundown at the hut. He also made sure that everyone cleaned up and did their part the next day. The last slog up to the top of the Pinnacles was quite slippery in the wet weather. Make sure you do it when it's clear so you can appreciate the view.
T.
One of the best Things in NZ! Great hiking tour to the pinnacle hut. Takes few hours but ist absolutely worth it! The night cost 15 dollars!. You have a kitchen and all the things you need, like pan, pot, fork, spoon, knife, plate and a cup. You need only food. You have to take you own rubbish because there is no rubbish bin!!
Me and my friends walking in the evening 7:30 pm and in the morning 4:30am! On top of the mountain to have a look at the morning sun! And that was absolutely breathtaking! Really awesome!
L.
This is a tough hike!! I would explain it as a shorter version of the Tongariro crossing but only the tough parts lol. I recommend wearing hiking shoes as it's wet at patches and also rocky closer to the top. It's shaded 90% of the way to the hut and then it's exposed from there. The ladders and staples at the end aren't too bad, I expected to feel more frightened but it was fine. Took us about 7 hours and we probably stopped for an hour at the top. Take wet wipes to wipe your hands because you'll use them to climb up at the top.
H.
Take hiking boots, sneakers are not good enough.if you doing it early morning from the bottom headlamps is a must.a must do in your lifetime.the climb is totally worth it when you reach the pinnacle. amazing view and sunrise.
S.
Incredible hike! A must!! The DOC hut near the summit was lovely to stay in too!
R.
Best tramp in the North Island in my humble opinion! Took my 68 year old dad and my 8 year old son.. Hiked right to the top and back in 5.5 hours and it almost killed us. I recommend booking the hut (1 month in advance for Saturdays) so you have time to explore (and recover) before coming down! Panaromic views from coast to coast! The climb at the summit is well established but is a camber over steep rocks using iron rungs set in the rock! Not for the fainthearted but well worth the effort!
U.
The stunning 3 hour walk to the base of the craggy Pinnacles traverses through groves of nikau palms, huge rata trees and across streams. Allow an extra 40 minutes one way from the Hut to the sumit of The Pinnacles. The road-end carpark and start of Pinnacles Walk is at the foot of the ranges, nine kilometres of unsealed road from the Kauaeranga Valley Visitor’s Centre.
M.
Amazing lookout however the viewing platform doesn't quite give yo u the full lookout, to get that you'll have to climb up some rocks. When I summited it was extremely windy, almost felt like I'd get blown off. Definitely worth the walk up, a must do in your life!
V.
Good workout to go to the summit. The last part of the track from the hut to the summit was particularly hard (500 stairs) but the 360° view is definitely worth it! Do not hesitate and have fun.
A.
Great and challenging hike. You can make it a circle by connecting with Billy goat to get out on a smaller parking lot 5 min from main parking in order to not walk same way up and down
C.
Amazing hike with gorgeous views! A fun climb up some ladders and rocks at the end
C.
Beautiful walk, take the bill goat track on the way down - it's worth it for the waterfalls!
F.
A track approximately 14kms return
Based on DOC track duration should be 8hrs returns 😬 But we managed it in less than 5 and half hrs 😃
Great view but yet meet my expectations how #Pinnacles actually look like. About Pinnacles track I'll still ranked The Mulu Pinnacles at Sarawak, Malaysia #1 ☺
From where I stand in the photo it actually offer 360° view of #Coromandel i.e #CathedralCove and #HotWaterBeach
S.
It’s hard walk but it feels good 👍. we started at 9:40am and we got the top around 1:30pm then returned back to the car park at 4:30pm the same way,
L.
Amazing views. Return hike can be done in a day. Stayed at the "Shag Stream" campsite (by the information centre) with access to the river. It was a refreshing swim
V.
One of my favoritos places in New Zealand, beautiful sunrise and sunset, I go once a year...totally worth it to spend the one night over there.
s.
Great walk, well maintained trails. Challenging day hike.
C.
A brilliant yet challenging walk. Managed to complete the walk from the valley to the summit and back in just under 4 hours. Well worth the effort.
D.
If the weather is good it's worth getting up early to see the sunrise at the Pinnacles
F.
Epic walk, epic views. 2.5 hours up, with breaks, 1.5 hours down, no breaks.
K.
Fantastic track with a lot to see. Fairly easy if you're used to walking, quite steep in areas with long step downs so not good if you have bad knees. Stunning views
田.
Eight hours round trip. Tough one but great experience 👍
D.
Absolutely amazing walk, if you are anywhere in the area then then this would definitely be my suggestion. We drove over from Auckland for a day hike and although there is a lot of climbing the views at the top are worth every penny.
We have heard that this walk would take 8 hours but it took us 4hr 45min to return and was an average paced walk for 3 people (who run often). I would estimate between 5h and 5hr 30min for walkers of average fitness.
There is a hut 35 mins (for us) from the summit and great place for a sheltered lunch.
The walk to the top was mainly covered by trees until the last 20 mins to the hut but on the way down the sun had moved and was only 50% covered on the way down. We set off at 10am but would advise carrying sunscreen to reapply at the hut.
I would rank this in my top two walks in New Zealand...enjoy 😊
T.
Excellent time. Such a great walk.
W.
Such a fun experience for the whole family. Haven't stayed in a hut before and was surprised by how nice it was. Very clean and safe with kids. The view from the top was breathtaking.
A.
Super good!
Driving to the car park takes about 15 mins down a dirt track.
First part of the walk isn’t that hard but it’s not exactly easy/moderate either.
Good amount of up hill walking with large stones/steps. Can be slippery in parts.
There is some awesome bridges to cross. Some people might find them a bit scary but nothing to worry about really.
Up to the hut should take about 2.5 hours.
After the hut, things get much harder. Lots of steps and then some metal staircases.
After this it gets harder again and there is some metal handles in the rocks. It’s not exactly climbing but you definitely need to be very careful. Go slowly.
The views from the top of stunning. We did the hike in a single afternoon, so didn’t see sunset or sunrise. Would like to try sleeping in the hut but I don’t think it’s a must.
Coming down took us 2.5 hours and I actually found that harder. Less cardio but it hard on my knees.
Overall it took is 6 hours there and back with some time at the top and a water breaks etc.
It’s a great hike. Highly recommended.
P.
Beautiful day, track was in great condition, and people were very nice
A.
Easy walk. Most of the track to the hut is easy going with some decent rocks to navigate. lots of stairs after the hut. Well marked and obvious to follow.
L.
Fantastic view on the top. And it's pretty windy. Make sure you hold up everything tightly.
G.
An 8 hour roundtrip from the upper campsite. Very exhausting but absolutely worth the effort.
K.
Great hut to stay the night if you want to catch the sunset or sunrise (or both!). Expect alot of stairs on the way up (made of rock etc and not of even size). But worth the walk for the views at the top. Last bit up to the peak of the pinnacles involves couple of ladders and scrambling up some rocks. But there is lovely views from just before the ladders too if they don't take your fancy! (Checkout @travels_with_truffles instagram for photos)
D.
Track I intended to walk was closed so walked to pinnacles hut and dancing camp Kauri dam, too late to climb the pinnacles. Lots of steps of varying heights. A lot of cobbled areas which can't be walked over quickly without risk of injuring ankles. Reached the hut in just over 2 hours. Some great views of volcanic pillars and the rugged landscape. Worth the effort.
G.
Nice walk, good views. You can walk up and back in a day, it took us 3 hours to the top plus stops. Better to go early in the morning to avoid having to climb in the heat
T.
Best place for a day out or a night away. The earlier the better
L.
Great walk. Very achievable to get all the way to the top and back in 5-6 hours but not a fun pace. If I did it again I'd stay at the hut and split the trip
N.
The day we went here was quite foggy. We completed both way of the Kauaeranga Kauri Trail within 8 hours because we took time to enjoy ourselves along the way. We did the Webb Creek path not Billygoat. The way up was not too bad. The way down was a bit challenging since the road was a bit muddy and slippery. But overall, we enjoyed the trip.
Would love to do it when the sky is clear. We recommend to stay in the hut so that you can watch sunrise and sunset at The Pinnacles. You need to book the hut well in advance.
M.
A quite steep but not too difficult hike (for little experienced and skilled hikers).
Wonderful views and unique nature to enjoy when you catched the right weather. Definitely worth a day trip!
N.
If you leave earlier in morning before the sun rises you can see the glow worms on the track. Amazing views from the top.
For fit people: you can reach the top of the Pinnacles in about 2h, if you don’t carry a backpack.
A.
Amazing intermediate walk. Not for beginners.
P.
This is a really nice hike, with elements of rainforest and nice bush scrub. Great views, really worth it.
We did this when we were resonably fit and 28, took a full 9 hours to do the return, including taking billy goats trail one way and having lunch. So plan for a full day. No water at the hut unless you are desperate so take plenty. Also I wouldnt want to do the final part in the rain.
H.
Great walk! I'll definitely do it again!
L.
A fairly consistent uphill slog of mixed rock steps with some loose scree, some quite slippery with watercourses trickling in between the rocks, formed sleeper retained steps and packed earth track. The track is wide with spectacular views along the way. The hut is better equipped than the doc website suggests, with plenty of pots, utensils & plates. It is also stocked with dishwashing liquid. You really only need to bring your food and maybe cutlery. The walk to the actual Pinnacles is another 40 mins or so from the hut, mostly uphill with a couple of small metal ladders at the very top and some grips to assist with the ascent to the rocks. Absolutely spectacular views from the top. Busy at sunset and sunrise, we had the top to ourselves just after breakfast at 9.30am. Totally worth every step.
K.
16.5km hike to the top. Lots of stairs. There have been some slips but the track is still in good condition. Lots of stairs, can be slippery. But if it's clear skies, the view is totally worth it!
J.
Amazing spot, with a heap of awesome work done on the recent track upgrade. Highly recommended!
M.
This is a great walk and is not very far from Auckland.
c.
Stunning view from the top of the mountain. The track is not so easy at the end but it all goes away when you arrive at the top :)
Make yourself a present and stay at the hut for the night to enjoy both sunset and sunrise that are both beautiful 😍
D.
Best ever tramp up to the hut then onto the actual pinnacles peak. 3 or 4 hours of challenging climb is rewarded with a magnificent view of the coromandel and surrounds. You can see tairua and Pauanui and lots of the islands. Really awesome challenge getting up the stairs and ladders to the top.
M.
Awesome day trek, not too difficult for regular hikers with some fantastic views along the way, and a bit of a fun climb at the end! If you haven't done it, do it!
N.
Brilliant view. Tidy track
E.
Loved the view. There isnt many places like this
C.
Fantastic walk with stunning views
D.
The views from the platform are absolutely incredible, the walk up was nice on a warm day.. few chances to stop and dip your feet and a pool which I swam in at one point.
Enjoy.
L.
The view is just amazing, especially in the morning. And luckily for me I could slept in the hut just before, for a hut everything was there and it's perfect for a short night, after lots of efforts.
S.
One of the best walks in New Zealand. Because of it isn´t one of the big walks it isn´t totally run over! It is very exhausting but the view over the Coromandel Peninsula is overwhelming! In total we needed roundabout 9 hours return...
A.
Without doubt a must do. But i would recommend billy goat both up and back. Longer yes but dry, beautiful and amazing views along the way
A.
Too many stairs 😜
a.
Nice hike.. Lovely views.. Forest, birds river and mountains with awesome sunrise and sunset :)
S.
Awesome walk. Lots of stairs in the end but the view is incredible
M.
Easy way. So beautiful view.
L.
Very beautiful hike with amazing sunsets and sunrises. Well worth it to stay overnight at the hut
T.
Best track relatively close to Auckland, you can do it in one day and still have plenty time to drive back to Auckland
K.
stunning sunset and sunrise
M.
It is a medium to hard walk and take plenty of water as it is constant uphill and the views up top are breathtaking :)
J.
5th Jan sunrise at Pinnacle summit
