Great hike. We did the loop and it was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Great for littlies. Wet, but not too wet. Good views of the snowy mountains and mostly good afternoon sun. Have fun. Like if helpful

Make the time to drive here & just look at the mirror lake view of the Mountains. If you are fit then go up the steps to the look out but it will take you some time & a lot of huff & puff as its well over 100 steps 😀

Fabulous views over to Wanaka by following the diamond lake track to Rocky track

The Diamond Lake Conservation Area and Rocky Mountain peak is a great alternative to the Roy's Peak hike if you're pressed for time and energy. The views over Lake Wanaka and Mt Aspiring are still pretty impressive and the elevation gain is half that of Roys Peak, meaning you can do the 7km return hike easily in 2-3 hours. The trailhead is 18.5km west of Lake Wanaka on the Mt Aspiring road. The walk to Diamond Lake takes around 10 minutes and from there the hike has 2 loops - a lower loop that takes in the Lake Wanaka viewpoint and an upper loop that climbs to the top of Rocky Mountain and gives views of the southern alps and Mt Aspiring. Think of it as a figure 8. The best views of the lake come from taking the eastern side of the loop (the right as you look up the mountain). The eastern side is more exposed and the upper loop has some steep sections. The western side is more forested and can be slippery if wet. I'd recommend taking the eastern side up and the western side down.

A good short walk, about three hours return. Lake is nothing special but nice forest with lots of birdsong. Great views over the mountains and Lake Wanaka. Paths get a little hairy and narrow in places, particularly on the east path to the summit after rain, but views definitely worth it. Recommended

There is a short hike to Diamond Lake, which doesn’t allow you to see much. You need to make your way up the stair and switch backs to the view point allowing you a better vantage to view Diamond Lake from above. The view of Lake Wanaka from above is well worth the additional steps. It is a view that can’t help to calm your mind. The Rocky Mountain View is great too, but I’m not sure it is worth the extra walk in my opinion.

Pretty Lake with reflections. The walk to the first lookout looks over the lake. Continue on to view Lake Wanaka. My hubby counted 249 steps! Uphill all the way..we're older & not very fit..it was exhausting but we made the first Wanaka view 😅 😁

It's an easy walk to the lake and there are some beautiful viewpoints. But the highlight is really the trek up to the top of Rocky Mountain. The track goes in a circle so you can go either way - however, I think going counter-clockwise is a bit easier because you go downhill for the steepest bits. Amazing 360 degree views from the top!!

Don't stop short at the circuit. Hike atleast up to Wanaka lake lookouts for best views. Was completely worth it for us - us and our kids. The younger one being 4 year old complained a bit about elevation gain, but was happy about being able to see from up top the lakes, fields full of cattle, buzzing helicopters, and snow capped mountains and shadows of flying clouds on them.

The walks around dimond lake and up to rocky mountain were great. The east track up to rocky mountain is a bit rough and requires good footwear and fitness level, the west track is quite a bit easier, but still have to climb some rock falls and steep sections so be prepared, and the view at the top is awesome, well worth the hour and a half walk.

Amazing walk! Worth every step. Getting upto the Wanaka lookout there are a few steps (75ish) but if you commit the view is amazing!

For the full rocky mountain walk, go east up and west down. West is more slippery and rocky. Good 360 views at the top. Took me 4 hours but I'm not super fit. Lots of stairs and rocky bits you have to climb over with both hands, definitely very slippery in July.

Nice walk up the top. End of the path gets quite steep and is a bit of a climb if going to the top. To the lake itself it's fast and easy.

It's an all right place. Nice hike up to Rocky Mountain. Sign says an hour and a half but it only took an hour to summit. Beautiful views of the lake from here. Used to be able to self contained camp here, but no longer sadly.

Good short - middle walk but the steps about mid way could be very slippery after raining. Lake is frozen in winter.

Go up the peak! It's a great quick hike, with beautiful views, loop track through top so you don't get bored 😉

While the views at the summit are truly stunning, that hike really is not for everyone. I have done a few "moderate" hikes around but this one is certainly more than moderate. I usually needed just half or 2/3 of the suggested time to complete a track, but I needed 2 hours instead of the indicated 1.5 to get to the top.

Great hike up past the lake to the Rocky summit. Our kids, ages 8 and 10 made it just fine. Awesome views, wasn't super busy on October. Well worth the effort on a clear day.

Fairly easy walk to a pretty lake with shady surroundings and lots of birdlife. Moderately challenging walk up to the Lake Wanaka Lookout and some short but steep segments to climb up to the summit of Rocky Mountain. Great views all round.

Plenty of space, off the road so nice and quiet, stunning views of the surrounding mountains. No light pollution so excellent for star-gazing. Long-drop toilet was fine(bring own paper), no potable water. Really great set of walks for most abilities, we did them all and were impressed.

Brilliant hike to the Rocky Mountain summit. Not a popular hike so you can get the place to yourself. Stunning views of Wanaka and the mountains. Steep climb but mostly switchbacks and steps, not too difficult. A good alternative to Roys Peak.

Diamond lake is very small, not much to see. But if you like trail, there are some. Could not find the washroom, even though the sign and map said it is there near the lake.

Diamond Lake Conservation Area is fairly nice but I recommend you continue hiking up the mountain for about 40 more minutes until you reach Lake Wanaka Viewpoint. While Diamond Lake Conservation is a nice place to stop, take photos and rest, it is nothing compared to Lake Wanaka Viewpoint!

Gorgeous ! Especially if you go all the way to the top (rocky mountain), the 360° view on the mountains and lake are totally worth it !

Great hike to Rocky Mountain. Be prepared for the 248 steps to get to the lake viewing platform and then some steep switchbacks to get to the top. We'll work it though!
