Reviews of Mt Iron Trail
M.
A wonderful walk which is a favourite with visitors and locals alike. Great views from the top and of the Rock formations. So many changes every time we climb the hill as we watch the transformation as Wanaka grows.
S.
Lovely for a quick hike up the hill during a pandemic lockdown. You get to the top and get to see the layout of Wanaka. Lovely views. Only wish people weren't so lazy and took their dogs poo bags with them down.
W.
Great for stretching the legs and you are rewarded with a beautiful view of Wanaka. The 5 year old did it fine and there are a couple of places where you can rest if you get tired from the uphill slog.
D.
It’s a 250 metre ascent taking 45 minutes up a clearly marked but sometimes rough and at times quite steep trail. But the 360 degree views from the top are beyond spectacular - and more than well worth the effort of the climb. You won’t regret it.
S.
Lovely trail! About 25 - 30 minutes up and 35- minutes down. Worth it for the views. Great hike if you don't have too much time.
Can get busy got there at 9:30 am and by 10:30 the car park was completely full.
The path is a bit steep but there was children and elderly people on the trail. Well worth it
K.
I’m a beginner and doesn’t hike often. So It’s pretty steep for me at some point. If you come up from the “puzzle”, you’d go through this stairs (it’s not much but since I came from another entrance so I noticed the difference). Personally I think it will be easier if you come up from the non-puzzle entrance (see my pic).
Note that if you park at this entrance (refer my pic) and if you take the loop track, you’d need to factor in another 5-10mins as you will come out from exit near “puzzle attraction”.
M.
Listed as one of Wanaka's most scenic short day walk. A must do in Wanaka, especially if you have little time but still wish to enjoy the breathtaking scenes of Lake Wanaka.
Steep but short climb, which will pass by several private property. Took about an hour in total. Best done with proper shoes as the gradient is steep!
M.
Good trail. Some challenging parts for a family hike so felt like an achievement, good length with some great views along the way and at the top
M.
Views from the top of Mt Iron. Great walk to the top for almost any age group. Plenty of view stops along the way. Can be breezy at the top.
Well worth doing.

Glacier ice submerged and sculptured Mount Iron into a typical “roche moutonnée” shape.
Roche moutonnée, (French: “fleecy rock”) is glaciated bedrock surface, usually in the form of rounded knobs. This is a French expression that refers to rocky outcrops in glaciated landscapes, which are round on one side and irregular on the other.
The term roche moutonnée was first used by de Saussure between 1779 and 1796 because these rocks bear a fanciful resemblance to the wavy wigs fashionable in his day. The term was widely adopted after its glaciological significance was recognized.
Lake Wanaka is already approximately 300m above sea level so the loop walk is 4.5km and ascends 240m. It takes roughly 1-2 hours to complete the loop.
Reaching the summit you are rewarded with amazing views.
