Reviews of Wellington Botanic Garden
D.
Lovely gardens here, never fails to impress no matter how often I go. The variety here and the amount of work that goes into maintaining a garden of this size is astounding.
Suggest making the observatory part of your exploration when you go here.

After reaching the peak at the Kelbourn Station by Wellington Cable Car, the only way to go is ls down. Our party of 4 is glad that instead of riding the cable car for a return trip, the alternative option is much better, that is, to enjoy a slow walk through the winding paths of the Wellington Botanic Garden.
From an elevation of 125 m, or lower down the slope, we can see the breathtaking panaromic views of the city and harbour in the distance.
There are shady paths, and open fields. There are big native exotic trees, ferns and colourful displays of flowers.
It is just a sensational.
D.
My wife and I went here while visiting Wellington. It was recommended by our receptionist in our hotel. The gardens are beautiful and are well maintained. You can easily spend a few hours here enjoying the different gardens. The duck pond is nice to relax at and the rose garden was beautiful and well kept.
B.
Went there 2 times but didn't get much time to cover all as I was busy taking photos and enjoying the view. Beautiful garden, long walk, passing tree house, shady trees, pond, kids park heading to cable car. Must visit place in Wellington
K.
We lunched at Picnic, a great Cafe. The outdoor seating is superb adjacent to the Rose Gardens. You can stroll through the Begonia House which is just magnificent.
J.
So relaxing to wander through from the cable car to the gardens. Hard to believe that you're in the middle of the city. Lovely well kept gardens.
H.
I would have given the Gardens 5 stars except they have put in parking meters. The council are driving us out of the city by having by having less and less parking places that are free. Having said that the gardens themselves are wonderful.
F.
A very well maintained garden, with lots of tracks and nice Bush. Different beauty for different seasons. It's always so nice to visit. Lots for kids to explore and enjoy.
F.
Wellington Botanic gardens are definitely a must see, however when we visited, it was bucketing down with rain, so only managed to take some fotos inside, it sure is a lovely place and we would certainly visit again on a better day.
Highly recommended.

THE BOTANICAL GARDENS WELLLINGTON is such a welcoming place to visit, very relaxing, beautiful scenery, such as, the gorgeous gazebo with the seating curved around a paved path and plastered walls, stunning workman ship. I loved this beautiful area, the waterfall was very relaxing.
The rose gardens set directly out with this amazing frame work all the way around the gardens, wistera in mauve starting to spread around from the cafe where we sat beautiful. When the roses are in full bloom the colors will be beautiful and wisttera spreads more, as now when you are enjoying the cafeteria or just sitting on a park beach it is stunning, in any of the different areas, there are bush walks that are nice for a peaceful walk, plenty of other areas, to many to mention, but must mention one of the ways you can get to the gardens, that is coming from the street in the town the RED CABLE CAR that takes you up a steep grade great views over parts of WELLINGTON, thats exciting, do try that a must do.
Finally public conveniences scattered around the gardens, no problems, there, so what more do you need, a beautiful day out, so please go and check out this beautiful gardens. Thankyou Louise.
E.
Such a great botanical garden with amazing views of Wellington and numerous path ways to explore. The cable car is definitely a highlight, as well as the duck pond and lady Norwood rose garden. Make sure you take your walking shoes!
P.
Beautiful place to spend on a beautiful day with my beautiful wife. The gardens are gorgeous and a nice easy stroll around to enjoy them. Highly recommend for everyone.
S.
Great place to go for a walk that caters for all levels of fitness and all ages. Great kids playground and plenty of places to sit and relax. Awesome artwork scattered around the place, can't wait to go back when the roses are in bloom.
J.
Love this place, second time i've been here and its always very well mantained!
R.
The hothouses here are filled with a gorgeous variety of plants from all over the world. Such a pleasing layout and experience. Would recommend for everyone.
D.
The Wellington Botanic Garden is a rare gem in the fine city of Wellington - a green oasis within walking distance of the main shopping district, the cruise ship terminal, the railway station and city hotels. The gardens feature the Duck Pond, Begonia House and the award-winning Lady Norwood Rose Garden. A number of sculptures are in position around the gardens, including works by Henry Moore and Andrew Drummond.
P.
Great place for all the family. Had fish and chips in the scented garden with the kids, brilliant. Loved the new create your own space and the hanging milk carton garden, still only seen about 20% of it, looking forward to seeing the rest....
L.
Lovely rose garden, great variety of names Rose's, set in a dell of and surrounding bush. A few bush walks nearby. Coffee at the cafe a relaxing vibe outdoors on a nice day. Indoor hot houses beautiful in summer and a great warm retreat in winter.
S.
Spring flowers coming out on the walk up from Wellington station up to the Rose garden. Even on a misty day it's beautiful
P.
A beautiful place with flowers inside and outside all year around. There is many different walkways and beautiful flowers and plants everywhere.
It's close to the city centre. You can walk there or take the famous Cable Car up the hill.
c.
Rose garden is a must to see... Well named, well maintained and even when I thought it would be to busy we had an easy parking that did not cost the world. Visit the next door cemetary too, lovely view on wellies past.
M.
Lovely place to disconnect and enjoy nature!
G.
After a Cable Car ride up, what better way down than a leisurely stroll through the Botanic Gardens. Such a beautifully laid out display of trees, shrubs and flowers with the odd piece of sculpture added. A visit here isn't complete without visiting the Lady Norwood Rose Garden down the bottom.
G.
One of my favourites in the city. You can barely even believe this is right next to the cbd. Beautiful
H.
Absolutely beautiful place to visit or walk or jog … beautiful flora and fauna here and on a cloudy day some beautiful play of sun n clouds throwing some amazing picturesque views…
I.
Really enjoyed the rose garden. So many varieties, so tidy and we'll labelled 10/10. Also lovely little track. As it was Christmas day, the cafe and indoor gardens were shut, but we still had a wonderful walk
H.
Botanical gardens is the most amazing place for family’s, shows, or just any type of gathering. Botanical gardens is a great place to explore with lots of areas to go to. Another cool add on is that it is right next to the Cable Car and Space Observatory. I have been going to Botanical Gardens for years and it’s definitely a place with memories. It’s a creatively made garden with so much to do.
Overall Botanical is one of the best places to go to in Wellington and I would 100% recommend going there for a gathering of any sort.
K.
Beautiful garden, especially when the flowers bloom. Very well kept. You can get a lot of information on what to do with your own garden, if you are into that stuff.
The rose garden is beautiful!!
S.
It's the most beautiful season is spring in Wellington.its a blooming season for tulips
S.
An amazing experience ! A fantastic resource right in the middle of the city. The walk was great and those that do not like hills should take the cable car up and walk down. The flowers are beautiful and the duck pond is a treat. A must see!
L.
Entrance is beautiful with summer flowers in full bloom and garden statutes. Great picnic areas. There's a herb garden and a rose garden by the Cafe. Lots of parking by the cafe
J.
nice walk fun to look at all the different plants trees and then rose garden for lunch was great food. then to walk around to the play ground was a great way to finished off our lovely day
G.
This place is right in the city limit. Parking can be limited. The roses outside were a bit over bloomed but still quite nice. Fortunately, the inside green house has some very nice plants to check out. There is also a herb garden up on the hill but we didn't get to go see it. Worth the trip if you are close by.
M.
A beautiful place to spend time in. Lovely trees, plants, native birds, and lots of shade on a hot day. We travelled to top of gardens by cable car, walked down through gardens, and caught a Karori bus back to Lambton Quay
M.
Pretty busy in the weekend. Not as much colour around the gardens as I thought there would be in Spring other than the tulips next to the cafe. Great place to wander for a few hours however. Saw lots of kakas and heaps of unique sculptures dotted over the gardens. Great service at the cafe with lots of ducks to pick up your crumbs! Parking was no issue.
H.
Cable car, views of Wellington by day or night is amazing. Check out the space place which is great for kids and adults. View the night sky by telescope
e.
A must see place in Wellington, take the time to explore everything and every garden. There are places where you can have a picnic or you can enjoy a delicious coffee at the café. It’s worth to spend a few hours or the whole day!
S.
Great place for a lovely stroll or run. Parking used to be free near the rose garden but you have to pay at the meter now. And 2 hours max is just not enough time, especially if you are walking around it all or going in the cafe after a walk. But some people working in the city were taking advantage of the free parking (a staff member told me) 4 hours would be better.
G.
Beautifully laid out variety of garden groups
F.
Dress comfortable when going here lots of walking. Enjoyed it
L.
The gardens are absolutely gorgeous and so large! We spent a few hours in here and didn't catch everything. The bush walks were lovely, the forests here are beautiful. A variety of plants and flowers fill this place. Definitely worth a visit, especially since it's free. The place is big enough that I never felt crowded by people. Be sure to take a quick walk into the greenhouse and check out the gift shop, had some cute stuff in there.
O.
Great Garden, worth a visit (I visited 2019)
M.
Its a beautiful place to visit with the opportunity to come close to nature. Here you get to see some native flora and fonas within the park's boundary. Be prepared to walk up and down following the path. Every scenery is breathtaking! One can spend the whole day only by enjoying the magnificent view.
R.
Must visit for all. Best to access from the cable car first, then visit the star dome at the top before walking through the gardens.
Playground for the kids but be prepared for walking and some areas steep.
Garden is well maintained, enjoyable for everyone.
Great views from the top and the treehouse has a nice viewing deck.
S.
You must take a ride in the cable car... discover the hidden colourful artwork along the way... matching the rose 🌹 ♥️ garden at the top end 🥰👏👏👏💯
B.
Lovely place. Easy to spend a relaxing day wandering through the gardens. Easy to reach via the cable car and walk all the way downhill to Bowen Street. We took approximately two hours to walk this (slowly with plenty of camera "stops" and little detours) it genuinely wasn't hard and we could have it it much faster if necessary. Well worth a visit if not for anything else than the obligatory holiday "exercise" to burn away some of the great food and wine you all no doubt have consumed. Plenty of tourists around but it never felt busy. Would definitely recommend.
K.

M.
Beautiful and intricate gardens. So many different areas and paths to explore. You could keep com8ng back and spend many a happy hour getting lost and finding secluded areas. Wonderfully maintained and facilities throughout. I particularly liked our walk down from the herb garden to the rose garden. Get the cable car to the top and then meander your way slowly back down to the city.
j.
This bi-annual event at the Wellington Botanical gardens of lighting and a concert was very enjoyable.
The weather this evening was perfect. Lots of people gathered. Take a rug or sandchairs and your picnic to enjoy the concert. The paths were well lit so you can see where you are stepping. The lightshow is on for about a week in the evenings from about 14th January.
It is only in a small area of the gardens. Nearest the main entrance. Be prepared to walk a little as you need to park your car on the road.
R.
Stunning gardens on our Wellington holiday do beautiful to walk around my husband and I loved it would have had lunch in the rose garden cafe but was to busy for us.
g.
Eye catching floras, learned some botanical names of trees and plants. Which i am fascinated.
very calming, good for walk & jog
j.
Good experience with cable car drive and botanical garden visit. There is not much information about walkway or opening hours time of some visitors centre
S.
Gardens magic concerts are great. Well done to the team who put together the Steely DNA gig last night. We had the blanket and missed a good close spot as we weren't as early as others. Suggesting you need to get there and settle in an hour before the concert.
Glad we took warmer clothes as the temperature dropped quite a bit and we were lucky enough to have a blanket to cover ourselves too.
A.
An excellent place to spend a day in Wellington. The garden is huge and easy to get lost. Has so many different activities to do for children and adults. Great bush walks, and picnic areas. There is big enough play grounds for children and space observatory and access to Wellington cable car. The view from the top is beautiful. No biking though.
A.
So pretty, definitely visit! If you're taking the cable car up and want to see the botanical and rose gardens don't make the same mistake we did and book a round trip ticket. Book a one way up and take the scenic walk back downtown through the gardens.
t.
Check before you go. Unfortunately there was nothing at all in the beds when we went last week. Still a enjoyable walk though. Wish the large trees had boards describing the ages, names etc but understand vandels would probably destroy.
M.
It’s must visit thing if you are coming to Wellington, rose garden and children area is awesome, but the whole garden is amazing.
It’s bit steep e.g. rose garden hence people on wheel chair may face bit difficulty as well as parents taking kids on strollers.
Lovely scenic views and attractive surroundings make you stay longer
J.
This is a nice space to walk through. Well worth the money to the rate payers. You have to smell every flower. Maybe council could consider walking tours.
B.
Never did go to Botanic gardens before but decided to check this one out and loved it. It's a large property with walking loops, sectional gardens i.e. rose garden, australian garden etc. I think it was a great layout and having the Cable Car Museum, Space and other featured houses around makes it a really worthwhile visit. You can just spend hours or even the whole day exploring here.
K.
A beautiful botanic garden in the center of Wellington. If you walk every trail it takes a lot of time (3-4h), but its worth it. Theres a duck pond in the north of the garden, where you can feed ducks (there's a food container with free food, don't feed them bread!).
It also has a playground and a lot of small things to discover.
A.
Just gorgeous scenery and excellent play ground
J.
Great garden with plenty of short and long walks. Love the space observatory at the top. You could grab a drink at the Cafe and take a bit of rest near the rose garden.
B.
Wellington Botanic Garden is a very popular place for visitors and locals. Tulips in September is so beautiful. The other flowers are lovely too. Roses are colourful and amazing during summer period. There is a playground for kids at the garden. It's good for the young families to enjoy it.
A.
Lovely garden with little cute animals roaming around. The roses in April are magnificent. The cafe and the greenhouse are well suited extras including in the area.
You can also walk up to the cable car. The pathing are quite interesting .
M.
Beautiful. We took the cable car up, then walked down. Gorgeous views and wonderful landscaping displaying a vast variety of trees, shrubs, flowers, succulents, and more. Great place to sight see, read, meditate, walk, etc. Rose garden is amazing. Guides to answer questions. Loved it!
O.
Nice garden with lots of flowers and tree verities. Either you can start the journey from the main gate up to the cable car and then you can directly go to the city by cable car. Or directly go to the top of the garden using cable car and you can walk down to the main gate.
J.
Absolutely beautiful. Over of the most well done gardens of this type I've visited. Real variety of plants and trees. Well worth the visit but it's hilly so start at the top (the city cable car will take you there) if you don't like walking uphill.
C.
Lovely place to visit. I recommend going by funicular all the way to the top and walk back to CBD.
Entrance is free.
Beautiful trees, interesting Australian Garden, Rose Garden was beautiful as well.
H.
A lovely place to walk and enjoy a peaceful day. A large variety of plants. The ride up on the cable car was an added bonus at a reasonable $9 return.
L.
A must visit in Wellington
Beautiful garden
Free entrance and open 24 hours
Worth to spend few hours to include the visit Rose Garden
Suggest to take one way Cable Car up hill and slow walk down through Botanic Garden then back to the city
L.
Really beautiful! All garden and plants well lokked after and upkeeping of the garden is good. Lots of activities and fun things to do around. Good place to take the kids and get out a bit.
B.
Lovely gardens with some interesting factoids scattered around and plenty of art / sculpture to see whilst enjoying nature. Needs a little love/attention in places though. Don't miss the hothouse - not the biggest but still some good specimens, particularly the orchids and air plants. Quite hilly, so wear comfy shoes.
S.
Great place to hide away from the busy city, a calm place to walk and enjoy nature with beautiful flowers too
J.
Amazing getaway from the busy city centre, and still being in town! The gardens are marvelous and versatile, you never quite know what you're gonna stumble upon. My recommendation is to by a one-way ticket for the cable-car to the top, and then walk yourself down. Would also recommend having a picnic there, if the weather is good. Finally, public restrooms are well situated throughout the area.
L.
A beautiful calm place for a picnic! The hot house was a welcomed retreat when there was some unexpected rain. Great place to hunt around for unusual flowers and maybe even spot some fish. (there is also a cafe that sells iceblocks FYI 😋)
E.
One of the best bits of Wellngton love it here. So many hidden paths to discover.
J.
Lovely garden to stroll through on a sunny day. The bird sounds all around takes you away from the city. Did visit it in the middle of winter so possibly not at its best but still left an impression. Definitely walk through the fragrant garden, lovely attack on your senses.
J.
Lovely gardens with plenty of Roses, hydrangeas and well everything. Take your time to take in the views and birds chirping while sitting on one of the many benches located through the gardens.
M.
What a great city. very friendly and relaxed people. we were here in 2007. and then we went up with this cable car. A lot of fun to do. nice view and above you can go to the Wellington Botanic Garden to enjoy nature. I therefore recommend doing this. i loved it.
The Wellington Botanic Gardens is a 25-hectare garden including protected native forest, conifers, specialized plant collections, and colorful floral displays as well as a popular children's playground and views of Wellington city.
To get there you can take the famous Cable Car up to the top from Lambton Quay, Wellington's popular shopping street, and follow the paths and sculptures down (stopping at the playground if you wish!) To finish in the main seasonal flower gardens.
The perfect time to visit during the Spring Festival when the tulips are out, but the Rose Garden seems to have various roses in bloom all year round and is a beautiful setting for a coffee or brunch at Picnic Cafe.
The Wellington Botanic Gardens also hosts an annual summer festival in January with free nightly concerts in the soundshell and lighting displays to walk through.
j.
The most amazing place in the city. If you enjoy a quiet time wandering in nature then this is it..different trails to follow, amazing variety of trees n shrubs. if you visit during the spring festival then you are in for a treat of tulips..Must visit..
G.
I can t even tell how much i loved this place. I felt a good vibe and discovered so many plants and flowers i dont even know. I made a picture of every single one of them. I just fell in love with all these magical flowers. It s like they all talked to me.
G.
Pleasant, relaxing. Nice Cable Car ride from city centre to top of botanic garden and you can return by the Cable Car or walk back down through the garden.
S.
A wonderful walk in the park. Plenty of hills so wear sensible shoes... I didn't and turned a simple 1hr stroll to something over 2hrs. Go find the cafe by the rose garden and check out the gift store inside the greenhouse. Watch the cable casr and enjoy the view up on top of the hill. See the observatory, sun dail, visit the playground or visit all the hidden gardens. Our visit was pleasant, parking isn't easy as it fills up quickly. If you can get there without a car.. That would be recommended.
H.
🌸Love the garden! My husband and I went there twice a week during the holiday season and we absolutely enjoyed the cozy and relaxing!
🌸Map and directions are clearly presented and there are many small places to explore along the way.
🌸Flowers are blossoming and if the sunshine is too strong, you can always find a shade.
🌸Family trip is also a good option especially if you have kids!
R.
Rivals some of the best gardens around. Well connected sites, bountiful colour, tuis, kaka . A great place to pack a lunch and take the family for a memorial day out
R.
A variety of walks throughout the park as well as many lovely places to sit and enjoy the scenery. The Lady Norwood Rose Garden was the highlight for me with hundreds of rose species with fun names like Tiger, My Mum and Honkey Tonk Blues!
N.
Great garden with lots to see and explore. I just went for the Garden Magic when they lit up sections of it and was like in a fairy tale. There was also music happening. You can get the cable car from the top too.
T.
Lovely place to enjoy a coffee and have a walk around the gardens , lots of walks.
P.
Nice and beautiful for a walk
P.
Beautiful and relaxing place to wander and get away from it all. From formal tulip gardens and ponds, to paths winding through wooded glades and hollows. Up steep hills and down into fern gullies. Stunning views of Wellington City and harbour to be had from the highest view points.
S.
can't describe how much I love and miss this small coolest capital city in the world of Wellington. I love rose garden and all kinds of flowers grown here. I miss Spring in the botanical garden. I wish to go again!
n.
It's a 20-30 minute walk from the heart of Wellington CBD but there's also a very cheap ($4 one way) cable car from cable car ln next to countdown.
The gardens have a ridiculous number of plants as well as a few other attractions like the small cable car museum.
Maps can be acquired pretty readily and come in many different languages. The maps provide a detailed outlook of the park and have a comprehensive and easy to navigate pathway.
H.
You better stop and smell the roses. But if you can’t then walk through the botanic garden and the fragrance of the many roses will waft upon you and send you on romantic nostalgia of beautiful moments.
M.
A glorious day to enjoy the Wellington Botanic Garden. The roses are yet to bloom to show their splendour but where the tulips are they're a carpet of colours❣️💚🌷🌱 Don't forget the fairy gardens and bush walks in there.
T.
The place to relax and get away from the crowd.
N.
You get some pretty amazing views of Wellington from here.
D.
Beautiful and colorful garden. The tulips were blooming when I visited. Had a chat with the man who was doing a great job in the upkeep of the tulip plots - he needed to explain to me why three varieties of tulips were planted (coz i kinda wanted them to be of same height) and why the white tulips were sparse (the ducks came to "visit" the plot, he said). I have to go to the pond to blame the ducks for breaking some tulips.
E.
Some of Wellington’s original coastal bush lies within this richly planted area of NZ’s capital city. There is a wildness to some of the paths here that is underscored by the ever increasing mix of native birds like the Kaka, Tui and Kereru that call out from the treetops and fly, heavily winged, across your path.
The gardens cater for children, with a well stocked playground, and also casual diners in the cafe next to the exceptional rose garden. Art sits with nature in the presence of a Henry Moore sculpture and numerous NZ pieces placed amongst trees, flowers and formal gardens.
Music takes pride of place in the Summer concerts in the soundshell and the occasional theatre in the park performances make these gardens a real jewel in the heart of the capital.
H.
Big and we'll maintain botanic garden and park. Amazing variety of plants and setting, great for a walk in the park. The place is well maintain and great for picture and a great view of the city.
B.
It was a beautiful garden. We took the cable car to the top and then we walked down the botanical garden. It was well preserved and nicely maintained. We went in fall so I believe plants were starting to dry out. I felt the directions and signs were not very helpful. I do want to mention that we bought a return ticket for the cable car. But when we are in the garden we realized we climbed down the whole mountain on the other side. So when you are at the end of the garden basically you on the ground level. if you have to get back to the cable car, you'll have to climb back. So we decided not to and walked to the city.
A.
We went to picnic cafe for 2 for 1 brunch during Spring Festival. Tulips were in full bloom.
R.
Really nice place to go for a stroll and loose yourself amounst the gardens. Its a gorgeous sancturary in the heart of the city. Spring time us a must with the Rhodos and Azalias on dissplay. Lots of different tracks and pathways to explore, certainly worth a visit!!
H.
A must visit if you're wanting outdoor inspiration. Seasonal blooms inside and out are superbly curated. A feature packed asset in the city.
D.
Came on a rainy day but it let up and was quite nice. This place is beautiful...A must if you're in the area. Nice playground in the middle for kids. Be prepared to hike up and down. You get some exercise.
J.
Had a wonderful stroll through the Gardens after taking the Cable Car to the top of the mountain. Loved having multiple walking paths to choose from, all well marked. Playground was our kids favorite part of course.
H.
Nice day out make sure you take enough water. Worth a visit ensure you have plenty of time to explore at least 3 hrs. Also a reasonable price for the lift
H.
Hadn't been for over 30 years so really enjoyed it. Due to the hills I would recommend catching the cable car up one way then following the signs down through the gardens.
F.
Lovely park with a lot of different views and paths, fulled with all sorts of plants and species. You can see different sculptures and memorials, as well as the observatory, planetarium and lost more.
C.
Another must visit when in Wellington. Thake the cable car up for a good view. Very relaxing. Child friendly, nice play park for kids. Very tranquil. Short and long walks available.
N.
Stunning gardens, well laid out and well looked after. Catch the lift up to the treehouse for great views, hang out near the duck pond, or visit the lower level and Lady Norwood Rose gardens (have done a seperate review).
Pick up a map as you enter the gardens, you can either do a short walk or for the fitter, more adventurous there are plenty of steep hilly parts to explore.
Easy to get a bus to the lower level, simply catch the #2 bus from Lambton Quay and there's a bus stop right outside the entrance.
If you want to explore the top level, you can easily get here by Cable car which again can be caught from Lambton quay.
A.
Great place to feed some ducks, have a picnic and enjoy the scenery! There's also this really cool Treehouse elevator you need to find!! It's so cool!
E.
Awesome, great made. The best things to do is, take the cable car and walk down and see all the amazing trees and wonderful flowers.
M.
This park has unbelievable energy! Smell of hundreds of plants and flavors and voiced of dozens of birds. Very invigorating place either for walking and rest.
N.
The cable car trip to the top is simply amazing. Then there are many walks through the gardens. You can do a loop walk and then return to city by cable car, or just walk your way down to the city.
I.
Beautiful from end to end, either on the asphalt path or the bush walk. On the lower end is the Lady Norwood Rose Garden, while the top features the Space Place Observatory, Cable Car Museum, the Cable Cafe and a perfumery. Walk up and cable car down or vice versa. This was 2nd time through and I have done both. A must do tourist atteaction in Wellington especially if your visit to New Zealand won't include a trip to the rural countryside.
S.
Stunning gardens and easy walk back to the city. Excellent cafe in the rose garden. Well worth spending as much time as you can there, extremely well maintained and beautiful.
L.
Nice beautiful botanic garden.
If you visit here from bottom, you should up hills. May better visit here from the top of cable car.
E.
So much fun for two humans and two pugs. We love coming here for a leisurely stroll and seeing the art
K.
There are a range of things to see here
my favourite is the glasshouses with the tropical fish & orchids
And there's the duck pond various walks the children playground The Flower & plant displays the glow worms at night the rose gardens
r.
a great a serene place to visit for locals and tourists alike. love the summer magic concerts held every summer- always a great vibe and everyone is on their best behaviours! wish the fragrant garden was larger!
k.
Go for breaky or lunch ...lovely relaxed seating indoors or out. Great walking tracks..hilly sections throughout not for the unfit. Well kept and a plessure to stroll.
M.
The gardens are refreshing especially the 🌷🌷🌷 soon the 🌹🌹🌹 will bloom ❣️ Wellington Botanical Gardens is well known for its Rose Garden. Summer here we come ☺️
F.
Great place to visit for an hour, half day or day picnic. Well done to volunteers helping to maintain it.
J.
Very beautiful site but less flowers.
Kind a good for bush walk only
M.
Mum's rejoice! Easy to park, stroller friendly, shaded, amazing playground and coffee to be had at both the top and bottom of this large park
J.
Lovely rose and herb gardens. Quite a few weeds around in gardens especially when walk down from top of cable car to bulb beds.
C.
I'm a Wellingtonian, and as far as I'm concerned this is the must visit feature of my city. Superb variety and location, it's very easy to find peaceful and sheltered havens in the gardens to relax and/or admire the plant collections. The succulent garden is my favourite, although there are many other great collections scattered across the site. The collection of mature trees throughout the gardens is also worth appreciating while you're there.
D.
This is not a small garden..It has many areas connected by walk way_rose garden ,fern garden etc.If you could take half of the day to visit and walk all gardens by walk, you can enjoy the nature as well as taking beautiful photos.
D.
Have not been to the Botanical gardens for many years and showed a visitor to the city how wonderful the gardens are. The duck pond. The Lady Norwood rose garden. The Dell. The sound she'll. The Begonia House. The play area. The waterfall area. All the walk tracks. The Braille Trail. And so much more I haven't mentioned. My visitor had a wonderful time exploring the gardens.
E.
Starting from the top of the Cable Car, we walked through the Botanic Garden following the recommended path. I have previously plotted a shortest, direct path through the garden but I am glad we followed the recommended path. It is a little longer and there are plenty to see, many plants, or the size of them, we have not seen before. The highlight is the Rose Garden at the other end of the park with many kinds of roses, all labelled. This leisurely walk took about an hour and is highly recommended.
D.
We came early and found a park right close to the gardens. We only saw a small part as we had limited time but such an abundance of greenery and huge trees. Plenty of wide walking tracks with some uphill climbs but so worthwhile, amazing views from the cable car lookout. We bought a return ticket on the cable car from the gardens and enjoyed a couple hours in the city.
s.
Great views and nice on a sunny day
S.
Beautiful gardens to stroll through. We got the cable car up and walked through the gardens, which takes around 30 minutes. It's definitely worth walking through the Bolton Street cemetery too, which has lots of historic gravestones dating back to the early days of Wellington.
V.
Went there by cable car and hat the walk down to the city. You shouldn't follow the "city" track .... You will end up on the backside of the garden and will have to go all the way around! Choose another one and enjoy more of the beauty of the garden ;)
T.
I go here for my daily walk, as its out of the city and you feel as if you are breathing fresh oxygenated air. The gardens are well kept with lots of bush and native fauna to keep you company. There are paths for all, with some a bit steeper, to really test your lactic acid and those that are gentle. Some nice streams with a grate natural forest feel. Within and along-side the gardens there is the Wellington famous Cable Car, the historic Dominion Observatory and the Space Place Museum located in the Carter Observatory. During summer months you can often find free entertainment at both the Dell behind the Lady Norwood Rose garden and around at the sound shell close to Glenmore St. A restaurant alongside the indoor ferns and plant glasshouse serves all you need to ensure your energy levels are maintained. This is a place to chill out, wonder around and just enjoy what else is going on. You can always take a picnic, chill out on one of the many lawns or let the playgrounds entertain your kids. Much of the flora is well labelled, including the small herb garden at the top of the steps from the Rose Garden.
G.
Beautiful gardens on the hill overlooking Wellington. Start at the top, via the cable car (get a single ticket) and walk your way down to the rose garden and café.
M.
Lovely gardens filled with pretty flowers & gas cafe on site. Service was quick. Came over summer & it was quite crowded. Enjoyed going on the cable car. Short but fun ride, it was bout 5 mins approx.
M.
Wide space, great landscape, great to visit during summer! Also got a nice cafe to the side.
V.
A lot of plants with labels clearly shown. you can see, smell and merge yourself with this green environment. Different part of the garden provides different activities and moods.
P.
Absolutely beautiful for most of the senses! Spring colours, fragrances, children's play park, café - a unforgettable experience everytime!
a.
With a population so small compared to other places I've been, this is the one of the quietest gardens I've been to, great for relaxing. However if you don't like giant steep hills avoid some of the roads that lead up to it.
S.
Loved the gardens and the duck pond with the baby ducklings. Enjoyed the meal in the cafe. The staff are amazing.🌹🌹
C.
Fantastic little spot right in the heart of Wellington. Definitely must visit again and again as there are lots of little paths with interesting things and sculpture
Т.
Magnilias and cactuses are my personal favourite, but one can find something nice and blooming here all year around.
A.
Nice park, but too many up and down make you tired quickly
A.
Lovely place, walking around here was relaxing, lovely flowers. The tree house had souvenirs and toilet facilities. Only missing a nice little coffee shop.
P.
Beautiful gardens. Lovely art work. Lush green walks and serene secret garden.
D.
Beautiful park near the CBD. Get the cable car from Lambton Quay and escape the city for a while. Good views from the top and often hosts events in the garden.
P.
Excellent walk through the gardens. It is steep as located up in the hills above cbd. Recommend a ride in the cable car to the top and walk from there. Toilets and a cafe are located within the grounds. Some great plants and features.
P.
Really worth a visit. So beautiful, with amazing flowers. Also has a lovey Cafe attached to it to.
J.
Plenty of places to explore and impressive displays in the main greenhouses.
Ride the Cable car up and have a wander through the grounds
A.
All time favourite place. I go here at least once a month. Ideal for picnics. I don’t miss tulip show here, this year’s Tulip show was as usual amazing.
M.
Excellent place for visitors to roam and explore, fairly good signposting although take into consideration all the hills. Can't believe it's completely free, plenty for kids too including a discovery garden and play park.
A.
What an amazing place. Food exceptional. Must try gumbo. Drums and bass/techno music of the highest quality. Staff look like they really enjoy being of service. Quick service even though the place was super busy.
M.
Very beautiful place a must do even if your not into plants.
K.
Well curated and manicured gardens. The Cable Car Museum is right at the top. Wonderful views.
O.
Nice gardens! Totally worth a visit. If there is no parking up in the park just park down on the street. It’s only a short walk and free.
O.
Nice spot but the paths are also shared with bicyclists so be careful of riders. Good views from the top.
T.
Always something new to see - spent hours there with my 5-year old and not once heard "I'm bored". And even better all alone when I can really soak all the beautiful areas up.
M.
Beautiful botanic garden, fun experience getting the cable car to travel up there and walk around seeing it all.
S.
Very beautiful and lovely flower gardens. Sadly the poles there are a bit tricky to dance on, but I managed something in the end
N.
Great gardens, lots to see! Make sure you check out the rose garden at the very bottom. Recommend decent shoes as some of the hills are quite steep and alot of walking.
R.
Great place to go and spend time on long walks in different areas of the park, really enjoyed the views.
R.
World-class gardens an easy walking distance from the city centre. Alternatively take the cable car from Lambton Quay and walk back to the city through to the Botanics and Bolton Street Cemetery. Highlights include the rose garden, Begonia House, the Carter Observatory and the various bush walks.
C.
Brilliant , grandchildren loved the playground
Let us oldies enjoy the plant's and shrubs
G.
Nice place to spend a sunny day. Garden is basically a hill , Took cable car from city, there is a nice lovely cafe at the other end of cable car. beautiful but need bit of stamina as there is up and downhill walk :-)
C.
Lovely garden, great interactive bits n peices for the kids too.
R.
Lovely, well kept garden, a delight in early morning sunshine
J.
As a botanic garden IMHO it's not special or even that good. But the location is great. Access via the city by mountain tram is special. The views over the city are great. And if interested the historical descriptions on the park wall explain the colonisation by Maori tribes and Europeans - great!
D.
Great cafe next door to Begonia House. GF menu options for summer weather hit the spot.
M.
Walk downhill from cable car top level. Trees, hydrangeas, fragrant flowers, rose garden. Hop on hop off pickup
K.
One of the best botanical gardens I've ever been to. The grounds are very well maintained and the garden itself is very large. A must see in Wellington. Make sure you ride the cable car up.
T.
My daughter loves the fragrant garden... she even found a friend who sat on her knee 🤣😼
C.
The gardens have big photo shots of Wellington city, nice smooth walk paths to see all the gardens. Note it's very up and down were some parts are a bit steep. It has a kids play park with a flying fox. Cafe at the top where Cable cart stops.
B.
Wellington Botanic Gardens are just a short ride on the Cable Car from Lambton Quay, and an absolute must see when visiting New Zealand's capital. Overlooking the CBD to the southeast, you're welcomed with a magnificent view of the city when you arrive at the top. From there you can choose from a number of different paths to down to the duck pond and sound shell, but make sure to stop at Carter Observatory, check out the kid's play area and of course the Picnic cafe next to the beautiful rose garden and begonia house. There a plenty of native birds around, like Kererū, Kaka and Pīwakawaka, and Tūī of course. A highlight are the glowworms you can see at night in the summer months along the little stream at the north end of the Gardens, as well as free concerts and movies as part of the Gardens' summer programme.
C.
I have nice walk moment
The garden is green and shady
The path guidance also clear enough

Interested in the herb garden
I refuse to stand on my head to read the variety labels that are placed vertically plus miniature print. Might appeal to the designer but are not PRACTICAL

Botanic Gardens are always great for a visit. Go in late winter to see all the magnolias flower ; or in spring to see all the tulips.
Great place for a run or a picnic.

Early spring and the gardeners are trying new companion planting. A lovely place at any time of the year for a stroll.

N.
What a beautiful place! Come here to watch much of the local culture - folks on first time dates, families, groups of friends and so on. It's all lit up at times and that's lovely too. Great place for bringing sketchbook and watercolors.

D.
Take the cable car or walk up through salmanca road to the sky view for botanic garden . There are multiple walkways coming down towards the city or circling around.
S.
These gardens are just so special. It's hard to believe you are in the middle of Wellington city in here. The pace of life seems to slow down and relax. There is a wonderful playground, beautiful rose gardens, a cafe, playing fields, a view over the city, many different little gardens, ancient trees and a plethora of paths. It is the type of place you can genuinely get lost and stumble across something magical. Look out though, like the rest of Wellington it is very steep!
M.
Beautifully maintained park, ducks even had some ducklings, lots of good photos ops
N.
Good short 1hr trip inside city.
u.

C.
Great place to visit plenty free entertainment over the holidays
B.
Such a stunning spot to visit. You feel like you've left the city miles away. A definite much if you have any kind of green fingers or thumbs. I'd recommend taking the cable car up from Lambton Quay and walking down the rather steep incline as opposed to the later.
N.
Very beautiful garden, so many areas to explore. However winter isn't a really good time to visit the garden since there aren't many flowers that are planted at that time.
N.
Great night at out the Wellington City Council Gardens Magic at the Wellington Botanic Gardens part of Summer City events 2021
J.

D.
Big garden where take a walk, with a good view on the city.
J.
Australian garden was disappointing, not much to see. The playground was good for kids to play on, flying fox was great fun. Although there was any money bars for kids to climb on. Overall a nice walk.
E.
Great rose garden and Gardner's are friendly and will gladly tell you about the place and plants
O.
My son got hold of my phone and somehow managed to give this place a bad rating! The botanical gardens are great, cable ride up is fantastic especially if you have kids- views at the top are fantastic. Great park for the kids, duck ponds. Its especially nice when the tulips and Rose's are out.
M.
A popular botanical garden and tourist hot-spot located right in the city. It is easily accessible by car, bus or funicular rail. If you catch the bus take the No.2 Karori bus and get off at the second stop in Glenmore St. which stops right outside the Soundshell. This is adjacent to the Lady Norwood Rose Garden which is also part of the WBG.
If you opt for the popular funicular route, the cable car terminal is located in Cable Lane off Lambton Quay, When you reach the top (Salamanca Road terminal) there is the Cable Car Museum, Space Place (Carter Observatory) nearby and the track to the WBG. The latter sprawls over steep, hilly terrain to level out at the Glenmore-end as the popular LNRG which hosts the best rose displays in summer. In between there are native and exotic flora, ponds and other highlights to visit. And a tea-house, next to the hothouse, for refreshments at the rose garden-end of your tour.
If you are feeling energetic after your WBG tour, you could try the garden-to-city walkway from here to Lambton Quay. This path runs off behind the car-park next to the cemetery and is not well publicised but the views along the way are well worth the effort. It is an easy and enjoyable walk along a narrow and steep path (not recommended if you have mobility issues). Tip: Don a good pair of walking shoes when touring WBG which is free to all visitors.
C.
Love the gardens as well as the bush walks. New treehouse visitor center has awesome views!

M.
Well to be honest I live next to the gardens. I consider this my escape from the city :). If you are in Wellington definitely do the gardens. Take the cable car up from Lambton Key and then walk to the other side. Walk into Tinakori village and enjoy the quaint place that Tinakori is with boutique cafes, restaurants and shops.
e.
Nice roses in the garden. Ducks are always after people with food. Overall nice environment!
d.
Beautiful gardens in central wellington..easy to park n walk around the place..well worth a look
T.
Great place for a walk. Just a few minutes from the central city. A bit of a climb or you can take the cable car up and walk down.
L.
Really beautiful gardens. Seems sort of magical. Really great how they have the trees and plants named by there scientific terms as well as there more commonly used names. This place is an arborists paradise. It assured questions I had since I first came to new Zealand. Namely, what tree is that?
D.
Our favorite place to visit in the weekends in Wellington
E.
Great light show and 80s band in the gardens tonight
S.
Amazing place specially on a good day
M.
Great gardens plenty to see!!
1.
Beautiful amazing place, with lots of interesting gardens and sculptures. I love the tropical house and pools, and the pine hill walk. Only downside is it's not that colourful in winter (but of course). Note to Pokemon Go players: This is a prime spot for lots of Pokemon, especially grass types (duh), Pokestops and gyms.
C.
Great place spend time chilling out and wandering around the gardens, just be warned it's a bit of a hike up and down the steep hills.
M.
Nice mix of curated and more rustic spaces

Children's garden, a must see! Beautiful design and the graphics used for the story-
telling of the place are very engaging.
J.
So much to see and do … it’s beautiful
D.
Wonderful gardens at the top of the cable car (also accessible from the road via the rose garden at ground level). Great variety of plants, stars of the show for me were the giant ferns. Be warned that the paths are very steep if mobility is an issue.
A.
We went up the cable car and the view was stunning. Walked all around the gardens Sensory and quiet areas are beautiful.
Tuis bellbirds making lovely music.
Down to Begonia House cafe a 5 star. The tulip area is gorgeous the colors amazing.
Will definitely visit again. From Auckland.
W.
Liked Rose Garden so much and spent more time in the garden. Walked up to the otherside to cable car for city panorama view...
L.
Nice place for a picnic lunch especially on a nice day 😊
T.
Beautifully maintained! Lots of activities.
Y.
The map of the gardens could be improved by making the path numbeting the same as the path numbers on the ground. That is for the directionally less able (like me). Cafe was lovely... recommend their fresh cheese scones.
P.
Beautiful gardens - but hilly!
J.
This place is AMAZING in the summer
Had the most amazing time
W.
Real nice and peaceful to walk around
T.
Nature in the city with bushy trails, rose gardens, tropical plants in the hothouse, herb gardens, an amazing sculpture trail, and even glowworms make an appearance after dark near the Glen. Family friendly with a funky duck pond and a play area, with many of the tracks being accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Start exploring the gardens from the top of the cable car where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Wellington and its beautiful harbour. Add a visit to Carter Observatory or grab a cuppa at the teahouse.
S.
Superb place to wander and admire the trees and plants.
F.
Fantastic , hey listen 🎶 Wellington turns it up and turns it on .
Thank you. Gardeners for doing such a Spivey job, making all the flowers sparkle in afternoon's delight, while we humans peruse the gardens. Brilliant Thank you
S.
Beautiful gardens to walk around, although some steep hills to climb too!
r.
For starters it's free and the cable car ride is cheap too.
D.
Beautiful space in the centre of the City. Planted on the side of a steep hill so better to take the cable car to the top and enjoy a steady walk down.
Many different flora & fauna to enjoy en route and a lovely rose garden and duck pond at the base. Great if you want a tranquil break from the City for a while!
R.
The hills and winding paths makes this park feel deceptively large. You can spend ages walking round the beautiful plants, trees and flower gardens. The rose garden houses a nice little cafe and there are great views of the city from various points. Well worth a visit, especially as it's totally free
S.
Never miss to see the tulips during spring and the roses during summer. A beautiful garden for a great time with family.
J.
I love walking around these gardens. The walking itself is amazing with a good variety to look at along the way with sculptures and giant beautiful trees. The rose gardens are beautiful and the cable car at the top is a great feature to make this a day out. Bring a picnic and find somewhere to just enjoy it.
S.
Amazing way to spend a 40 minute walk
R.
Well maintained, beautiful, so much to see around.
S.
I loved looking out onto the rose garden while at the cafe! The Rose's are well marked and exceptional. Rose lovers- a must visit!! Also walk through to the old cemetery where heritage roses show the love to the buried.
A.
A lovely place to visit, beautiful gardens and peaceful setting.
S.
Beautiful and big garden. There is lots of public toilets in the garden area.
R.
Beautiful garden for a morning or afternoon stroll.
J.
Must-go place in Wellington I really enjoyed walking in rose garden
G.
Favourite parkland and gardens in the Capital. Lush grounds, excellent seasonal plantings and interesting plant collections make every stroll a discovery. The events calendar delivers a wide range of live entertainment and activities through the summer months. Family friendly.
A Wellington jewel.
A.
A hidden gem in Wellington. Take the cable car up to the top of Kelburn - have a look around the museum and take an ambling walk down the hill to the amazing playground and flying fox. Get a workout for legs on the way back up.
A.
Beautiful ❤️
Best place to relax 🤠 Photography 😉
K.
An awesome place to have pinic, walk, jog and hang around 😀 😄 😊 😎 👍👍👍👍👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
L.
Lovely walk around beautiful gardens and bush, lots of birds to spot and informative signs about trees and plants. Great playground for the kids and an awesome cafe. Would recommend
V.
Place to visit at least once
Please carry water bottle and proper footwear.
P.
Very good of the Botanic gardens to open a part of the gardens, for the Aged Care organisations to be able to drive through. The company I work for, we drove our vehicles through, a lot of our members are fragile, but for them to get to see the lovely gardens whilst staying in the car and hearing their oohs and ahhs as they enjoyed the drive and sights...is music to my ears... lovely 😍
J.
Great walk. Gardens are beautiful. Cafe was great. Playground is awesome. View from the top is fantastic and then you can take the cable car back down into the CBD. Kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
A.
We had such a lovely time wandering around here. Rose garden was my favourite spot but the whole place was great to see. Duck pond was pretty cute & everything was kept really tidy. Few step parts but alternative ways of getting to most areas.
A.
Took the Cable Car up from Lambton Quay and explored with the toddler and a couple friends. Lots of amazing things to look at a good playground for the kids and some interactive stuff dotted around the grounds too. Great way to spend a sunny afternoon in Wellington.
M.
A beautiful garden perched on top of the hill, well worth the cable car trip up. There's an informative Cable Car museum that's free to enter, a Space observatory that's pay to enter and a lovely layed out walking tracks throughout the gardens. Be aware that the garden is very hilly so planning your walk is a good idea.
N.
Absolutely stunning gardens, wish we had more time set aside to walk around! We walked the main track around and it was fantastic, great to go on a warm day as it is beautiful under the canopy. It does have some slightly steep parts but they do notify you of easier options/ paths to take. Lots of bird life and of course stunning scenery!
s.
Great place for a weekend afternoon stroll.
C.
I love the colours at nighttime. Very muted. Good spot for semi private debauchery. Climb octopus. Fly fox. Hedgehog friendly.
A.
Beautiful in all seasons. Kaka flying around. Accessible. Wonderful play park. Really enjoy our visits.
R.
The gardens are excellent to visit on a sunny day. There are lots of great parts and if you try to visit the. All it could easily take you most of the day. There is a good rose garden with a cafe and green house. Then going through the main gate are tulip beds and follow the path to a duck pond. The gardens are fantastic for kids. It is pushchair friendly (though it is a good work out as it is built on a hill). With kids, after the duck pond head to the excellent playground via the children’s garden. The playground is very good for all ages and there are toilets there too. Definitely fit in a visit when you are in Wellington.
N.
You can't go to Wellington without a walk or picnic in the gardens. There is a cafe on site in the rose garden area. In summer they do awesome outdoor concerts. You can catch the cable car up to the gardens from Lambton Quay.
E.
My sister and I went up on the Cable Car and took a leisurely walk down the hill to the station. Enjoyed the flowers and views and impressed with the Begonia House. Two cruise ships in town so facilities were busy. It was a sunny day which added to the enjoyment. Thanks to all those who work behind the scene to make the gardens such an interesting feature for residents and visitors to Wellington.
S.
So lovely, especially from the top , highly recommended 👌
F.
Nice to have a look around but I've seen more impressive gardens in much smaller towns. There's only the tiniest of car parks that costs $5 an hour. Suppose that's to be expected in Welly
R.
Went to the picnic cafe which has lovely food. The Begonia House is well worth a visit. The roses are beautiful - you just need to be there at the right time.
P.
These gardens are always worth a visit, no matter what time of the year you are. It only takes 20 minutes to get up to the Cable Car where you can see beautiful views of the harbour. There are plenty of different plants and flowers, lots of benches to sit down and relax and multiple walking tracks, suitable for everyone. Definitely a favourite in this city.
D.
Went up by cable car and then wondered back down via the gardens some amazing plants.
M.
Lovely gardens. Conservatory was nice and the cafe there had great food and service, would definitely attend again. Could have more parking available as it was hard to find parking there and in the surrounding streets
D.
Lovely place, but make sure the rose gardens are in bllom for the best experience.
P.
Scenic beauty and idyllic location for picnic.Have a cup of coffee gazing roses and mountain.
S.
The place beautiful, wonderfull view!
T.
I love these gardens so much. The cafe is great. I always bring guests here
B.
Nice botanical garden with lots of roses
P.
Heaven on Earth. If you can only visit one place in Wellington, this is it.
S.
So blessed to be able to enjoy these beautiful gardens...loved the Magnolia trees in full blossom, amazing.
S.
Beautiful grounds. Take your time.
a.
Good experience, and was lovely views
L.
Beautiful gardens, very hilly though! Has a fantastic playground for the children, and over summer has the lower parts lit up with lots of coloured lights for Gardens Magic, along with musical performances at the Sound Shell as it's getting dark. The Sound Shell also holds Summer Shakespeare performances. Gardens are probably best approached from the top via the Cable Car if you arrive on foot, otherwise it's a very steep walk up the hill. Plenty of places to stop and admire the views along the way.
A.
Nice cable car ride and beautiful botanic garden. One can enjoy the walk through.
J.
Fantastic different gardens lovely walks
S.
I can't believe this place is free. Good job Wellington. There is s playground in the middle too.
t.
Amazing place to visit, lots of tracks to walk and hidden spots to find, one of my favourites is horseshoe bend. The magnolia tree by the duck pond is breathtaking in spring, as are the tulips. The rose garden is amazing in summer, the view from the top of the cable car is spectacular no matter what time of year. The kids play area is loads of fun, best flying fox!
J.
What a delightful place to visit, lovely rose garden and botanic glass House, lots of walking tracks and a children's playground, includes a cafe, good coffee and a lovely cheese scone, very enjoyable experience
A.
One of my favourite place in Wellington love this place
G.
Beautiful art and flowers, but be prepared to WALK/hike a lot if you want to see it all. Lots of elevation! If you're going to be in the area a while I suggest multiple short trips.
S.
The Botanic Garden is right in the center of the city with numerous access points. We entered from the top after catching the cable car up the hill, then walked down (there are few track options) along a well marked path that passed various trees, both native and introduced, lots of beautiful flowers, and many local birds. On your way you'll find two historic cemeteries and a playground that is brilliant for children (and when nobody is looking - older children too :)). There are lots of open areas to sit and enjoy the peace & quiet. Lovely spot to spend a couple of hours walking and resting up.
D.
Having taken the cable car to the top, we started a very enjoyable and leisurely stroll back down through the Botanical Gardens. A superbly well kept array of plants, shrubs and trees all displayed to their best advantage. We finished at the Rose gardens where we took away ideas of plants for our own garden.
F.
We did the Cable Car up and walked down through the Botanic Garden. Fantastic. I especially like the collection of trees. The Botanic Garden is nestled on a hillside and you can see the houses hugging the hillside across the valley. Very scenic. One of our favorite experiences during our five days visiting Wellington.
M.
Relaxing and well-maintained. I thought I will be bored as I've been to a lot of Botanic Gardens here in New Zealand but it is refreshing, especially the playground and the different walks.
D.
Beautiful gardens with views of city as you walk down hill. Saw specimens of trees for the first time.
