Reviews of Puketapu Lookout
C.
Great views. We luckily found parking near top. Don’t bother with a stroller if you have a little one. The walk path is narrow and there are steps to the top.
L.
Amazing views of Whakatāne River mouth and plains. There is a small car park and a few steps to climb but absolutely worth trying!
B.
Another historic site around Whakatane. This lookout was once a Pa site or Maori fortification but these days it's a curated lookout over the whole town and rivermouth. There is a small amount of parking at the bottom of the short track up the hill to the lookout and the large grassy area at the top has been fenced off. The views from the top are well worth the short uphill walk to get there. There's also a slightly longer walkway across the road to another old Pa site - the Papaka redoubt.
V.
Short drive or walk from town. Nice views of surrounding area, with a short steep walk to get to the top.
M.
Breathtaking views of Whakatane, sunset best time to visit, walk up there is beautiful with enclosure of all that is nature, proper path & steps to climb. Be very romantic spot to picnic with loved ones/one. Highly recommend for everyone to see not just budding photographers or tourists, locals you need to visit, total bliss up here 😍
B.
Awesome view to the ocean out to whale island and white island below the cliffs whakatane township fishing boats to realestates agents and coffee breaks in between the heads end of muriwai road and wairaka marae an much needed body treatments and relaxing exercise for healing mind body an soul for all walks of life sharing our greatest sights and love of our country hotspots all over the bay of plenty
S.
Superb views of islands and plains from Whakatāne. It is however a short uphill climb so not ideal if you have issues climbing hills. Route can get mucky when raining but nice all the same!

This is where my son and I have our lunch and dinner dates. He refers to this place as "our spot", we love the view.

Maori historically the first on the lookout for its great vantage point over Whakatane, river, & sea - the lookout by a walkway joins with Papaka Redoubt.
R.
I often stop there on the way home and admire the views of Whakatane
X.
Brief steep hike up to a beautiful lookout spot.

One of the best place to see the sunset in New Zealand. Photographers will find it the best to take some pictures. Will highly recommend this place to pass a lovely evening. Choose a sunny day and come here to see the lovely sunset. You will never forget the color of the sky. I was a bit disappointed with the wairere falls but after watching this place I am happy. I also loved the overall small town Whakatane surrounded by hills.
L.
