Fun for all the family. Nursery rhyme themed Park. Very clean toilets. Lovely green spaces for picnics and free gas bbqs.

This is a beautiful park for the whole family. Bring a picnic lunch or have a barbecue.

Grandson loved the park but missed not being able to steer the pirate ship and change gear on the speed boat but as always the favourite is Dino the dinosaur

Maybe the water park needs to to check

Nice to stay.. the toilet is really clean.. good to walk to.

Take note: gate will close at dusk. Strictly no dogs no motorbikes no horses no alcohol and this is a smoke & vape-free site. Interesting concept for a playground btw!

Nice playground for the kids. There is a water feature that kids can play in, so bring a swimming costume or spare clothes. It is near the river which offers some nice views. There are some BBQ areas near the playground so why not make it a family day out. Also nice for a quick stop for the family if you have a long journey ahead.

Awesome park and playground in Whanganui. Lots of different themed playing equipment, water features, castle, swings, slides and climbing areas. There is also a miniature train, but it wasn't open when we visited. Lots of grass areas and shade for sunny days. A must stop if in Whanganui with kids!

A great park with a combination of entertaining play areas. Walking from on end to the other there is equipment such as climbing frames and obstacle courses with a child friendly theme. The Flying fox is situated amongst the trees of the park, allowing for a trilling experience.

Located on the eastern side of the Whanganui River in Whanganui, Kowhai Park is a wondeful playground with lots of nursery rhyme inspired play equipment. There is so many thing to play on and have fun with. There is also a spray park section which is ideal on a hot day. The facilities are excellent with tidy bathrooms, a bbq and picnic area and plenty of parking. There is also a ride-on train. This park and playground provides great entertainment for the family, I highly recommend taking the time to stop by.

My grandchildren thought it was the best park ever. Went twice the 5 days there.

This playground has everything. It's huge! Has a shop and train that operates in school holidays and public holidays, water park in Summer, skate park, plenty of shade, seating, a castle, a ship, lots of slides. Only downfall is the council let's it down by not keeping signs up to date and could maintain it better. Probably best park in New Zealand

This playground was awesome. The kids had so much fun. There is lots of variety in the we play equipment and space for them to run. The flying fox was a favourite along with the huge range of swings. There is also a train and a splash pad area. But these weren't going due to the weather.

Kowhai park will always win if children had to vote, even as an older man all I see are the childhood memories of my siblings and I playing and growing up with this beautiful fantasy playground. Many a wonderful time was had when we used to play king of New Zealand in the old wading pool. Thank you very much for looking after this Treasure for the people of whanganui. It would be great to see some new theme be added in the future. Peace and love Werahiko Craven

Nice place for a picnic. There are tons pf options for the kids, bbq spots and right beside the river too so can do some fishing. 🤣

Didn't see this kind of kids park across the country. Beautiful well maintained and nice walks around.

If you have young ones and love a picnic then this is a great place for the kids. Toilets, train rides and Flying Fox that has a kick to it. Fun for a visit or make a day of it.

Lots of things to do and enjoyed the themes. Bit dated and could do with some paint to liven it up

Have been going to this park since I was a child and now still taking great-grandchildren to it it has always been an exciting place for the young people

Great papatakaro for the family. We make it a stop every time we travel north from WLG. Could do with some updating, eg drainage holes in the rocket ship because it was filled with leaves and old water. other that, would recommend.

This is the most fantastic and enjoyable playground !!! My kids actually enjoyed this park so much. I wish I had a same level of playground in my town.

Best playground in Whanganui and perhaps even in NZ. Love this place. Enjoyed it as a child myself and now my own children spend hours immersing themselves in the magical surroundings of Kowhai Park. Don't ever change it

Was my childhood play ground ...took my 3 year old there for first time she loved it....she has cerebal palsy and they have disablity swings there is well...

Brilliant large playground for kids but all ages can join in too. Lots of slides, swings, mini twirly things, a roundabout, castle, fort, sailing ship, nursery rhyme theme scenes etcetc.

Beloved by generations of Whanganui children (and also by tourists ❤️🖐🏽) as home to one of the best known playgrounds in the country, built by the local Lions Clubs in the 1990s.

Always fun for the kids, lots to do at the multiple parks.

Remember going here as a young boy. I was excited to take my own kids here when the time came. They had a blast. Playing in the water feature is a must. Bring your togs in the summer. BBQ's to use if you wish. Public toilets and a train that runs on certain days. fun fun Fun.

Lots of memories from my own childhood with all the same features still there except the children's pool.

A really great playground.

What a lovely place to picnic in the sunshine. The orange pumpkin was decked out with weighted balloons ready for a birthday party. Another family had brought their own gazebo and erected it beside a picnic table near the bbq which was fired up and smelling delicious. All ages were there - a group of teenage lads were scaling the rounded shape near the mountain. I kept an eye on a naked toddler who had escaped from his Mum and was on a trek to the humpty dumpty by himself but he made his way back to her. Dad's were pushing kids on swings. A fun happening place. Lots of shaded spots to park the car and handy toilets.

Kids have an absolute blast each and every time. So much to see and do, the little diesel train is a cracker. A relic from simpler times, not all installations are particularly safe. Be care of the near-vertical rocket.

Great open spaces with plenty of amusement for kids of all ages

First time visiting the park & it was a blast, it had everything a child could want and more to be able to use their imaginations in so many different settings. Yes it is a tad reminiscent of my own childhood playground with the old fashioned play equipment. And i truly would hate if they updated it to todays PC protective equipment. My son was a pirate on the old ship, he was a ninja in the awesome castle. He climbed mountains with aw so cute seals n went down dino slides - he loved the rocket ships and the giant whale. It was best 2hrs spent. We met some lovely people and dante met a new bff for those few hours. Hopefully will be back in summer to see it at it's best with the water features active.

Great park for kids of all age. Pack a picnic for under the tress or a BBQ for in the pumpkin. Hours of fun entertainment for the entire family.

This Park has great Concrete Play Equipment . Set amongst large trees. Said to be the only concrete playground in New Zealand. Ironic for an area of land that started out as a Vegetable garden during WW1

Great fun for the grandkids, brilliant park

My Grandkids love this Park, which is very well looked after. I played in this playground as a child myself in the sixties and those are all still there and as in good condition as when l played in or on them. Its large with lots of space for kids to run. A running Railways train for rides adults cost $2.50 the same as kids and you go around the railway track...tunnel and all five times. There's a lolly and ice cream shop there too.

This park was recommended to me by my parents to take my children to. I believe this park is over 60 years old and have heard so many good things about it. There is something for everyone here

Fantastic place to take the kids! Baste them in sunscreen and let them run wild. Toilets and drinking fountains available, a miniature train to ride on (limited hours - check the kiosk on arrival), a water play area (afternoons during summer), a shop nearby for snacks, plus iconic equipment like the dinosaur slide and the whale. What more could you ask for?

Excellent children’s park with SO many activities and things to play on from slides and swings to the water park features for the warmer days. What a fantastic find for anyone with kids. So good in the sun. Such a lovely place for everyone to enjoy and so much more to enjoy in the rest of the park or by the water too.

Wow Regular maintenance, upgrades and additional toys/activities keep this place primo! I loved this place in the '60s and my grandkids enjoy it as much as I did these days. The additional safety features (rubber matting and other upgrades) enhancing an already extremely fun and enjoyable experience. Photos can't show the smiles, sounds and smells that make this place so memorable. Good, well maintained toilets. Plenty of trees, tracks, and open space - whether for runaround or picnics. Small on site shop has very limited hours, but food shops nearby (across the road) and within 5 minutes drive enable us to enjoy (at times endure ) extended hours of fun and relaxation.

Best park in NZ for kids ... Well looked after ... We go all the time .. the train is a real bonus

Looks like an amazing play for kids though upon closer inspection is filled with various concrete constructions and metal bum-burning slides...likely should be made into a museum for how kiwi playgrounds once where made back when kids where though. Kids had a great time regardless of course.

This is a very big park which has very cool things to play with from toddler to teenager. Also places for a barbecue, so good for the whole family. Good for the kids to bring their bike and scooters and skateboards. You can cycle across the bridge to it

Just awesome! Kids of all ages, but especially the young at heart, would have a ball with the different activities. Free Gas BBQ, plenty of space.

Beautiful,well maintained children's play park, has slides, swings, climbing equipment. Large allowing equipment to be well spaced creating lots of space for the children. There is a small water play area, so take swim wear on a warm day .

I'm backpacking through the country with a 1 year old and a 3 year old. Ofcourse we stop at playgrounds along the way and this is definitely the best! My kids loved it. It's for free. It's clean and well maintained. There's even a BBQ set up.

An awesome park to spend a good amount of time at. There are so many interesting rides, slides, climbing obstacles and even a flying fox. Plenty to do at this park. There is a water sprinkler in summer time. Also a big Pumpkin, that has gas burners for everyone to share. Great for cooking up a feed . There are toilets that are easily accessible and lots of parking. There is also a kids train that runs on rails around the park. Enjoy

Castle needs a paint and a couple of hamster wheels

We have a happy funny afternoon here with my kids. The park has a BBQ area for your enjoy and watering playground.

Our children just love this wonderful park lots to do.

The menu looked promising. They have an amazing array of Ice Bubble Tea. It looked tidy and the seating looked adequate. However, language was a barrier, and it took a while to comprehend what was being asked of me. It also took some time for me to get my order. I will be going back again, and this time at a different time of day so I can see if there's any difference to how my 1st visit went.

Nice park, with a fun train ride on Sundays for the little kids. In summer the water fountains are great. A bit more respect on the playground would be nice so as some kids or adults, who knows... pee in the attractions.

One of the great parks around the country, has a bit of something for near everyone. Could use a spruce up and refresh but its still well loved and used.

This park is huge! There is tons of open space for games and lots for the kids to do including a little water park and plenty of different items to play on. Shaded by lovely trees and far enough from the river to ease the parents mind. This park gets busy in summer but is great on any sunny day. Wish I had a place like this when I was a kid!

Wow, a lot to see here. Heaps of playground equipment, plus splash pad. Miniature train was running too and little shop. Would be keen to come back and go for a bike ride through the park. Lots of nursery rhyme and cartoon characters.

Great place for the kids and,adults alike. Park is a little tired and shows signs of vandalism but over all it's a safe and fun place. Large park so lots of space to explore and run around. Flying fox, fort, swings and places for hide n seek... Located right by the river for great views.. big skate park too.

An iconic park, played here when I was a child but it is definitely in need of a modern update. It has alot of space and room for improvements as it is looking quite old and rundown.

This park is amazing. I grew up here playing, cycling, running having picnics and Bbq's in this park Everything in this park has been donated. There is a small donation for the train otherwise everything is free. Well worth the visit. While you are there please donate to help with upkeep and new activities. The only improvement I think they need is to install a swing for kidlets in Wheelchairs.

We went to the Extravaganza Fair here over the weekend. It was a great Gypsy fair held by the river at the Northern end of the park. The playground was just next door as well as a Food Truck that had stopped by the carpark offering cups of hot chips, hotdogs and more. A popular place for a picnic and a play even when there's no special event on. We also love riding the model train. 😊

Spacious playground, with old school activities. I fully support any playground that isn't a politically correct, rubber matted duplicate of every other playground. This place reminds me of Kawaroa Park in New Plymouth 30 years ago, I love being able to give my kids memories like I had.

Large iconic NZ park inspired by nursery rhymes. All the usual (though very unique in design) play equipment, plus a skate park and a water park all beside the Manawatu river with bbqs that are free to use.

Was a really clean and nice park. Plenty of space to kick a ball around. Great for the kids. BBQ facilities available with plenty of benches. Bathroom was really well kept and clean. A true rarity for a public park!

Probably the best play park we have visited so far in NZ..it's enormous, has loads of amazing fixtures for kids of all ages, next to the river, even had a cafe close by for coffee and some lunch.. were recommended to stop here with the kids en route to our holiday destination and will definitely be back next time we are passing through.

Nice big park for kids, plenty of car parks. Take gumboots for kids bit muddy during winter and rainy days.

What a brilliant facility. If only all parks had such a wide variety of things to do for kids all ages. Make sure your kids have good shoes in the autumn if you go near the flying fox, chestnut tree is right next to the landing zone. It's needs a bit more shade sail cover as the parts for the youngest kids is all out in direct sunlight making the swings very hot to touch, and hard when you can't put sunblock on faces or keep hats on the littlies. The water play area is huge and fun for all, kids caught me out numerous times. Lions train is good fun too, just don't get caught on the inside when it's running with a pushchair, only way out is up the stairs of the overbridge. Our trips to family will now always be via whanganui now instead of waiouru.

Use to visit here alot as a kid. Was always a favorite place to go in Wanganui. Hope to oneday take my Granddaughter there too

I saw it being built in 1950s when I lived across the river as a young child. My extended family have enjoyed it over the years. Lovely to see it newly painted 67 years later. Missed Miss Muffet's spider though

Love this park it's definitely my favourite for family events.

Great place to stop in with the kids. However, it hasn't really changed much over the past 30 year's I've been going. A few updated, new additions are required I believe. Maybe something during the next council elections can be mentioned. We've spent money on all other areas of Wanganui, but this really. Cheers

Cool kids (and adult playground) that is well maintained and fully fenced.

For my money Kowhai Park is probably the best children's playground in the country. The fact that it's a free attraction only makes it better. The structures are old - the train station proudly states 1963, so 55 years as of this post - but it's well maintained and there is seven a nod to health and safety with the lowering of a few slides. Kowhai Park, makes Wanganui well worth the journey.

Aa a child, i played here and it is a joy to take my family here. It is a kiwi classic. Giant dinosaur slide, volcanic concrete montains swing slides roundabouts and much more. I garrantee your kids will love this place. Train ride is available at a moderate cost but most other activities are free. Enjoy.

A nice large park area beside the river with lots of mature trees, and a good old fashioned Kiwi playground that is themed to nursery rhymes. It has dinosaur, whale, big boot, fort slides, space rockets, seesaws, swings, water play, a large wooden fort, flying fox, fireman's pole a mountain with caves through it. It also has a train track including a station and a set of toilets.

Good place for a family outing with friends and a bbq.

The James Mcgregor Memorial Park (part of Kowhai Park) is a sensational arboretum. The trees are wonderfully tall and magnificent. This area was planted over 100 years ago. Some of the trees are labelled. There are many Gingko trees as well as redwood trees, Kowhai, oak trees, kauri. This is well worth a walk through. At the moment there are some daffodil beds in bloom.

Most amazing park, ever. Kids would be busy here for days! Powerboats on river were a bonus. Plenty of parking, including for campervans to make a day of it.

Good rest stop. A place for the kids to run around while the adults can grab a coffee from the food truck.

It was great fun for the kids and grown ups alike. Take your own picnic with as there is only toilets and no cafe. It will take a couple of hours to play here. I will go back soon.

AMAZING playground. I was here in my childhood as a kid (&it was Amazing! !) its so much better now im an adult! ! My best friend took my 2 year old daughter and I! We ALL had fun. Definitely going back in summer

There is so much at this park for families to enjoy. In the warm weather barbeques are good way for families to catch up with each other for a meal. I really like the new swings as well.

This is by far one of the best free children's Park in the North island and there is something here for everyone, from go-carts for the big kids (adults) to the shutterbugs for the not so big kids, there is even a exercise work-out area for all those fitness fan's. A must see when visiting Whanganui.

Old school themes but super duper fun for the sprogs.

The variety of activities, rides and adventures are second to none when it comes to children's play parks in the north island, there are a few that come close but none like Kowhai park it has always been number 1 for myself, brother's and sister's when we were younger and for all my children, nephew, niece's and now my grandchildren. Catch a train passed a pirate ship and try to find the moa in the bush. There's shuttle bugs for the Littles and a flying fox the bigger kids and on a hot summer day the Waterpark is going with water gun's and sprinklers, showers and a water maze to test your skills.Theres free bbqs and picnic areas for the whole family and plenty of ground for a friendly game of bullrush. A must visit when you're in Whanganui.

Everything a kid could want to do, including skate park. Other activities next door such as Go Karting and mini golf but those are not free.

This is a wonderful place to visit for All of the family. So many fun things for the children to play on. Plus plenty of areas to have a picnic.

Best park in New Zealand, would like to see a few more thing's for kid's with disabilities. Still a park that everyone can enjoy.

Perfect place to cool off on a hot day

A park for all ages. Family orientated with a variety of different spots and a lot of views. BBQ areas, picnic areas. Fantastic.

This place is incredible. Train, priate boat, castle, moas, plenty of room to run and BBQ. Lots of free parking and a lolly/ice cream kiosk.

Lovely park in Rangiora. The kids love the sculptures playquipment and the lovely outdoor setting. Easy access and plenty of parking.

Best place for kids

Totally great family park. Safe and fun for kids. The miniature train is a neat ride

It's kind of great but not amazing for really little ones. A lot of the concrete play equipment is too high for most little children.

Always good and love seeing other families familys out enjoying themselves but disappointing when some people decide it's ok to smoke in a no smoking area

Great family outing, cam waste hours playing here.

Kaloe really liked it but i found it too wet. There is alot of fun stuff for kids in her age (6yo)

Because it's big .it has a castle and a ship as well .the first time I went there i thought you had to pay to go in it is that good
