Reviews of Whale Bay
C.
Beautiful beach, clear water, golden say. Changing rooms and toilets to the far right of beach. Worth hanging out for.
L.
A great short walk. Beach is beautiful!
J.
One of our favorite places to spend a nice afternoon. Just bring some extra water as there's no potable available on site.
Reasonably clean restrooms and some great beach and rock pools.
Highly recommend coming prepared for swimming and looking underwater.
C.
Gorgeous. A short walk to get to the bottom and enjoy a swim.
J.
Beautiful beach but limited carparks.
C.
One of the most beautiful beaches in NZ. We saw dolphins out in the bay. Not close in Whale Bay itself. It's a perfect beach for a safe swim. There's so much shade from the pohutakawa trees. The ten minute walk is very pretty too.
E.
Cystal water, pohutukawa, peaceful beach
S.
Fluffy sand, clear water, tiny fish, trees for shade, toilet facilities, calm water in a sheltered bay. Such warm water in the shallow part. Really beautiful beach.
E.
We visited at a perfect time. Middle of winter & no one else around. Easy walk from car to beach. Fun wandering around the rocks & enjoying the ocean views & smells. Newish toilet block available. Parking at the top, don't leave valuables in the car just in case. Unfortunately no dogs allow.
S.
The prettiest beach, with the calmest water, fantastic for swimming/floating. Is a bit of a walk to and from the carpark, but isn't too steep which is good.
D.
Great beach only a short walk from the carpark. It's a little slice of heaven. Sheltered and great for a swim. Good walking tracks towards matapouri over the headlands.
V.
Lovely place, close to car park.
CCTV on car park apparently because of robbery.
Good to swim but careful with occasional blue bottle jellyfish.
d.
Have coming up to matapouri for 40 years now and whale bay is still one of the best beaches in NZ. Safe swimming for the kids as little to no waves to contend with. Please don't bring your dogs as the bush area behind the beach is an area that kiwi nest and hopefully breed. Boaties please take note. There is no over night camping either so please respect the minimal rules and allow everybody to enjoy for many more years. Toilets are available also.
S.
A walking track of approximately 10 mins will lead you to a tiny little beautiful beach. You will be greeted with stunning views of the ocean on your way. A very limited place in the car park.
S.
Beautliful. Had an amazing swimm and snorkel. Deffinetley a must see
O.
Beautiful little gem Beach and white sand!
L.
Completely crowded on nice days. The beach looks very nice though. Water is really clear
L.
Amazing! It's beautiful and the water is great.
L.
Beautiful secluded beach. Well worth the 15 min walk from the car park.
S.
Nice bay with a 30 min walk to get there and 20 min walk to get back. Shading under trees! Views on the walk are beautiful!
V.
I trust it would be very pretty in a sunny day. However if there isn't enough sunlight, it doesn't worth such an big effort to reach there.
D.
One of the most stunning beaches I've been on in all of Aotearoa (New Zealand). Crystal clear water and much warmer than South Island beaches. The pohutakawa are spectacular and sculptural even without their brilliant red flowers on summer. Views from walkways above just spectacular as well. Worth the effort for sure.
J.
Absolutely beautiful. Very busy on hot days, but we'll and truly worth it.
A.
Awesome little beach just like paradise 😍 straight up toilets were okay. Big thumb's up 👍
N.
Beautiful beach.. water so clear. Great spot!
T.
With a quick 5-10 minute walk into Whale Bay, how could you not make this a stop on your to do list. This is an easy walk in with kids, there are a short flight of steep stairs on the way out, but it's quick so if you end up having to carry one back up you won't suffer too much. A beautiful spot, gorgeous views, soft yellow sand. There are public toilet facilities here too. A great spot down the eastern end by the rock pools for kids.
A.
Pictures speak for itself. Beautiful sandy beach
D.
We went there to fish off the rocks. Only caught rock fish but still excellent time.
B.
One of the best beaches of New Zealand! Clear water, white sand and all!
G.
Perfect secluded and sheltered beach with excellent shade from the pohutukawa trees. Great snorkelling on the rocks, lots of fish to see. Definitely worth the short walk down a well-maintained track.
A.
Great, quiet place for a weekend getaway and quality time. Will visit again! Just look at the photos
G.
Beautiful walk to the beach through a palm filled forest. Great views along the walk and the bay is easily accessible. Went late May and you could still swim, you won’t find clearer water anywhere in in NZ.
A.
Beautiful place to visit if u r in whangarei.
S.
Beautiful bay and most of all not crowed!
T.
My favourite beach in the whole world. We were there at end of Nov and the water was magical. Soft sand, shallow beach that feels like forever, perfect waves what else can you ask for? My baby also had a blast playing as there were no nasties in the ground. Beautiful piece of paradise. I'd go back in a heartbeat ❤️
J.
Good little bay, a bit of dirt road to walk down but the water is clear and clam
M.
Awesome little bay. Plenty of shade and there is toilets there too which is handy! I went fishing today and caught a decent snapper.. good place to have a picnic as theres tables too
J.
Beautiful walk down to a great beach. Definitely worth a look!
M.
Easy walk and a wonderful reminder of NZ's beauty, so easily found.
A.
Great secluded beach, quiet with lots of sun and shade and perfect for swimming!
S.
Always a pleasure. Plenty of bush to walk through and bays adjacent to explore too, closer to low tide. Nice shaded shoreline and toilets make this a great family beach. Highly recommend the walk over to Matapouri and back.
J.
Crystal clear waters, amazing treasure of northland. Don't Tell too many people 🤫
V.
Nice beach and a great walk
i.
Another fantastic northland beach
B.
CCTV monitored parking area at the top. Beach accessible via 5-10min walking track. The track itself offers the occasional stunning view of the beach as you make your way down. Small but incredibly beautiful beach. The sun is directly out over the water in the afternoon. Nice fishing spots, and some rocks jutting out into the ocean - perfect for sitting and admiring the view or meditating. Public toilets available.
T.
Absolute prestine views and amazing tracks put in place for a good day's worth of adventure. Big hi-5 for the added extra help in carpark security, makes the trip more secure so you can soak up the sun in every nook and cranny you find yourself, so many little pathways that lead you to breath taking photo opportunities or your own secluded beach that makes you feel like you own the coast. Worth every single step you take! 😍🌊🌴
A.
Secluded, calm and beautiful place to get some sun and swim.
K.
Beautiful! Short walk to one of the most stunning bays. Perfect for a swim, snorkel or kayaking. Toilets available.
B.
One of the awesome, scenic places in Northland
A.
Short 500m bush walk on a track to a very Nice & sheltered beach.
Large Pohutakawa trees provide sun shade if needed. Safe swimming bay with beautiful scenery & good fishing off the rocks at beach ends.

When you get there, you will understand why Whale Bay is one of the most photographed beaches in NZ! It's absolutely stunning!
S.
Awesome beach with white sand and coral blue water. It is a very sheltered little bay so even with strong winds and swells you can still swim and relax.
A.

l.
Absolutely beautiful!!! My first time going there and I loved it 😍😍 Heaps of shade and the water is to die for. Love, love, loved it ❤️🌹❤️❤️
D.
Awesome beach! You will love it, small walk but has toilets.
P.
A beautiful secluded safe beach only ten minutes walk from car park. Car parking space is limited
T.
A knock on the door, there was no one there. The man stood alone head heavy, he had just been pranked. He had heard of these on the news, these wild 'pranks' that youths did to assert independence. They'd upload these acts of rebellion onto the 'world wide web' as a way to rally youths too scared to act on their own. It was working too. Minors everywhere had started spreading mayhem, it always started with something trivial like fakes knocks on the doors but would quickly escalate to gang beatings, murder, even genocide. The man closed the door. In wake of what had just happened he needed a pick me up. He went to this beach. It was nice.
C.
Very beautiful water, very blue, its a nice place
B.
A 30 minute walk from Matapouri or a 10 minute walk from the car park. Really worth it - amazing clear water, and sheltered.
J.
Stunning!
F.
Awesome bay, short walk to get there. Check out the mermaid pools at the end of the peninsula (careful at high tide)
D.
Well worth the walk over from Matapouri. If you leave your car in the carpark, ensure that valuables are with you or out of sight.
m.
It's a stunning beach in such a beautiful area of New Zealand. I've been here many times.
B.
Nice quiet secluded beach....in July. Nice easy walk from the carpark.

P.
(Translated) Quite calm but a very charming place. It can be reached by several well-marked walking paths. The route is not too difficult and access from Matapouri beach and parking spaces takes 30-45 minutes depending on the pace of the walk. Along the way, great views - the coves are more and are very diverse. The whale bay itself has a fairly wide beach and the toilet is a convenience. Whales, unfortunately, I have not seen, but after all, this name indicates that sometimes they appear there
(Original)
K.
(Translated) Nice hike, good way, lonely dream beach. WC and changing rooms.
(Original)
Schöne Wanderung, guter Weg, einsamer Traumstrand. Wc und Umkleiden.
