Reviews of Formerly The Blackball Hilton
S.
Provided you aren't expecting modern 5 star luxury this place will blow you away. A great place to stay full of history and character. Comfortable, clean rooms in a grand old hotel. The food is high end pub food. Stayed here the night before departure for the Paparoa trail and it has everything you need, plus they do packed lunches for the trail. Met some cool local characters at the bar. Will definitely be back!
S.
Historic hotel in a once thriving historic town. Great atmosphere and amazing food. Pub lunch was much classier than normal and evening meal superb. Last time we had food that good was cooked by Simon Gault. Lots of nostalgic photographs on the walls including the 1935 Labour Party Caucus. Also footage on Pike River. Outside, a very good display by the Blackball Historic Society, right alongside the Hotel. One display wall given over to the women of the district. Often the forgotten heros. Well worth a detour and Hotel now has power sites for campers, as well as cozy accommodation.

This was my first visit to blackball on the Westcoast of the South Island
Great small town pub very welcoming friendly staff
Nice beer garden out the back
Lots of history and memorabilia on the walls of the bar inside
This is the town where the New Zealand Labour party started
Great bowl of chips
Large basket of chips fed 4 people
My friend got a flat white coffee which he said was excellent
I definitely plan to return soon
A big thanks to the locals and staff for your warm welcome and hospitality
I even purchased one of their t-shirts
Here is a photo of my friends and I in the beer garden
I am the fellow in the hat
N.
Right up there with the best "pub grub" ever. Everyone's meals were great. Hospitality spot on too. Enjoyed our lunch there yesterday
C.
Great. Clean Friendly staff. Couldn't fault them. No problem to do anything for you and food was to die for thank you
G.
Great place to stop for an excellent meal, staff are friendly, nice and clean surrounds and the beer is cold too.
A.
Lovely garden bar, sitting in the sun enjoying a tasty cold Tui's with some great company. Until.....
It was time to go home.
R.
Great meals, great historic atmosphere. Friendly service. Not to be missed.
T.
Great Place for lunch after a stunning ride on the bikes. Fish and Chips and the burgers are fantastic.
N.
Great place to visit for a drink or meal. Barkeep offered helpful advice on options for camping.
T.
Great pool table, great service, great locals, just an all round proper pub
V.

Cool place with a great back story. Check out the miner's strike display next door
M.
Beer and atmosphere was great. Went to garden bar and played quoits
S.
An amazing place every kiwi should experience! The history, the culture and the people are just fantastic! You haven't lived until you have spent a night at the Blackball Hilton!
A.
Top pub
Great history 👏
g.
A great historic pub loads if history with photos all around. We enjoyed good food, I can recommend the venison pie in front of the fire, with a glass of wine, an excellent way to spend a wet afternoon.
I.
Its a rough pub with character. Friendly staff, basic but tasty food. I suppose combined that's what makes it good place for a drink. Nothing false or pretentious.
K.
Had a great night here. Big group of motorcyclists from CHCH.
Classic Character old pub.
Basic, comfortable and value for money. Very good meals, well priced drinks, friendly staff with personalities 👍🥝🇳🇿
K.
It's a must visit and the food was great. Everything on the menu $20.
J.
Great West coast pub will be parking caravan up next year
B.
The meals were lovely.
The coffee, as good as anywhere.
The food was very nicely presented.
But.
For me. I would have loved vege not vinegar doused salad with my lamb as my evening meal after a busy day on cresseys track.
I burned up nearly 4000 calories that day.
And sadly.
We paid top dollar for not so top notch service.
T.
Good bike road to get there Great place stop
B.
Fantastic staff and well portioned food that was also yum yum.
S.
Gr8 pub with nice owners n really friendly staff
J.
Had a couple of tap pints at the seats out the front in some beautiful May sun. Lively old place with frieny, welcoming host, and well worth a stop after walking around this tiny township, buying salami from Blackball butchery and checking out the open air museum next to the pub. Met a great retired pug hunter at the Hilton and listened to his hunting tails. So ad I made the trip on to Bkackball.
J.
An interesting local pub with heaps of history. Lovely staff and good food absolutely worth a visit.
C.
A lovely historic building with lots of old world charm. 9 of us stayed here before embarking on the Paparoa track. Rooms clean and comfy with adequate bathroom facilities and a handy kitchenette. Pub had a few locals settling in which was a good peek into local life. The food is good with generous portions, good hreakfast and flat whites too. The matriarch is rather strict - quite funny at first...If you are wanting an early start opt for the continental breakfast. Enjoy.
L.
Very nice lunch thankyou and friendly service
R.
This character Hotel was just what the doctor ordered on a hot hot day in the south.
Quick service and super chilled beers at fair prices.
We couldn’t ask for more
N.
A quaint old pub right in the middle of Blackball. Owners were very friendly and the beer, with Tui on tap!.. quenched our parched throats. A lovely watering hole.
M.
The food was amazing. Could not believe how good and varied the menu was. Came back the next day for. Lunch
J.
Awesome breakfast and a great atmosphere 👌
N.
Lovely friendly staff, extremely good food, don't leave feeling hungry. Love all the jokes in the rest room.was my first time here, I'd certainly go back.
S.
Good old fashioned service 👍
M.
Great meal last night.we stayed in the carpark with hookups for our camper brilliant ..want to have hot shower walk up to the Flash Loo free in the high street toilets spotless ..
M.
Fantastic dinner and dessert. We’ve been traveling NZ for 3 months and this meal was over the top. Husband raves about tender and juicy prime rib while I was savoring tender Mediterranean-inspired lamb roast salad.
J.
Excellent steak night ... no steak knife required. Fabulous atmosphere and friendly staff. Blackball needs your visit before it becomes full of international tourists.
G.
Amazing quaint little hotel and restaurant. BEST service in NZ with fantastic food (veggie options are fantastic!)
R.
Stopped in for a cool beer and a visit. Steeped in history, a worthy place embrace the past history and with museum adjacent....a worthwhile stopover and also great staff.
E.
An experience & a good one! Great bar & delicious food esp.dinner. Funky rooms & quirky bathrooms
P.
This is an iconic 1860's Heritage Pub with an amazing restaurant. Beautiful food at a reasonable price and plenty of it. Definitely worth the 20 minute drive from Greymouth. Really nice helpful service and interesting history of NZ life in that era. It's one of those hidden gems that are part of the real NZ experience
C.
Professionally managed place. Just be careful with your conversation.....or else ;) Very tribal and town gossipy. Watch out for the old roaster in the corner - gets fired up if he has had too much town gossip with his daily booze. Many millions being made / paid out for the Pike River fiasco - and apparently a code of silence going on. Do the math.
J.
Always great at the Hilton . Good hosts
M.
Friendly and welcoming, perfect brunch following a night in the bush. I'd recommend adding Black Pudding to your breakfast order, very yummy
F.
Wonderful food, great service and friendly locals!! Well worth a visit!
D.
Brilliant service and extremely good food..... well above what one may expect for a small town pub/hotel
R.
Great food and great stories
V.
Motorhome powered parking.
$20.
Great old pub with very friendly owners/locals.
Wonderful ambience. Great food. 😴
P.
Quirky and fun. Good range of drinks and a comfortable restaurant. Definitely worth a visit.
R.
Nice people, quirky place was abit different and has a good steak. But it's seem abit unstable building. But glad we stayed their.
E.
Friendly service great food and drinks and also lots of local knowledge of the area.
And a place to park your caravan enjoy 😄👍😄🇳🇿
K.
Awesome hotel worth the trip to. Had been planning to visit our long lost pub. Same name.
W.
Wonderful classic West Coast Hotel that has been lovingly refurbished. Bedrooms are small but comfortable and on the second storey away from the bar and restaurant. Meals were very tasty and of high standard. Well recommended.
F.
First time staying here (April 2018). The premises while clearly old and typical of a dated country pub, was clean and appears to have been renovated a bit, check out the toilet photos! Their meals were a shock - they were very well presented and tasted absolutely beautiful - all others in our group said the same thing so well done there.
A live guitar player, played well and was a good singer albeit a bit loud at times making conversation difficult. After finishing at 11pm, normal music continued into the small hours so don't expect a quiet night until well after midnight on a Saturday night.
One brick bat though - some of the management (and they will know who they are as it is essentially a family that run the place), need to be more chirpy, a smile is a good start and must learn to engage with customers more and on a happier note.
Overall, a pleasant stay in what is a pretty unique location and environment. Well priced and I would go back.
C.
Great friendly service and Kian's Pop Up kitchen had fabulous tasting food. Would recommend to stop off. Also has campervan power sites
K.
Fabulous hotel to visit, a congenial host and wonderful food, more than just your normal 'pub grub'. Definitely worth a visit and off the beaten track.
D.
Great service, loved the venison burger! Nice restaurant in a very historic and character filled 100+ year old pub.
I.
We arrived just after the kitchen closed but they still hustled around and got us our hot drinks and a very large, excellent and good value basket of chips.
Friendly staff too!
Y.
Beautiful pub and good food. Been there quite a few times and its owners know a lot about the history.

S.
A real kiwi experience. Classic rooms. Excellent cuisine. A good place to stay. Not so many tourists. Vintage bar, very comfortable. You'll meet pakehas and perhaps drink some beer with them. Very good value for money in a calm small town. Could change when in September the 10th great walks open. Highly recommendable place to stay. Will be back next year certainly.
T.

I'll be honest, when I originally pulled up outside, I really wasn't sure and started to get that pre raped feeling
But how wrong could I be
Okay the rooms are like turning the clock back to when electricity was installed
The restaurant was fantastic
And I'd say the pub was very reminiscent of and old pub back here in England
The only downsides were being woken by coal trucks and having to move on
J.
Just look at the food photos I've uploaded and the wonderful service we get from Cynthia Phil and their awesome staff. Whenever I fly in from overseas Janet and I have the Former Blackball Hilton right up there on the list. I hear the guys have been busy and nearly completed an outside repaint no small feat.
