Reviews of Counter Culture Board Game Cafe & Bar
C.
Went here 3 times this month and were such a blast! Huge range of board games available from quick fun cards to 1 1/2 hours long game.
$10 each person if you choose to only play board games or $5 each person if you get the food.
J.
Tasty food, attentive staff and a great selection of games
s.
Wow, what an amazing place. So many board games to choose from, and if you're not sure on what to play the staff have a great knowledge to recommend something that will have you entertained. 5/5, would board game here again
D.
Strangest Welly burger ever (but good) and a game of Magic Maze! We had a great date night at this spot.
L.
Great food, staff and selection of games. We were able to try three different games in our 3 hour window and had dinner as well.
E.
Fantastic place, guaranteed to have a great time each visit, whether it's a big group or just two of you. They have an amazing selection of games, and great food and drink!
D.
Awesome range of games, delicious food, a lovey atmosphere, and you couldn’t ask for better staff - we got some awesome recommendations, tutorials and had an awesome time! 🍔
D.
Best board game cafe I’ve ever been to! Great game selection, with good organization and suggestions on the wall. Local craft beer on tap, snacks available. I’d come here all the time if I lived in Wellington. Highly recommended!!
C.
Fabulous place to spend an afternoon or evening. Vast selection of games with something available for anyone! Good selection of drinks on tap, and a very reasonable price for a three hour slot. They also have a small selection of their games for sale should you be very tempted by any of them...
江.
Comes to the place with small expectation but ends up having a lot of fun. Clerk is very helpful and kind.
L.
We love this place! We actually go to roleplay rather than play board games, but they have a massive library for anyone who loves board games! The ambience is very chill and funky, with warm woods and bookshelves helping break up the space. The food at their cafe is _always_ good. Lots of vegan options and daily specials. Their homemade ice cream is rich and decadent. They even serve alcohol! Can't recommend highly enough. Good times! :)
S.
Always good here. Good food and coffee. We enjoy coming to play games we are interested in before we buy them. Amazing selection of games too for all ages and interests.
Some of the game boards were a little dirty but overall they were good and had all the pieces and instructions.
R.
Always an amazing time here. All the food is top notch, and you get to play any board game you want! Great for trying out games you're curious about and for meeting other geeks 😍
M.
Love coming back to play games with friends. Highly recommended! Heaps of boardgames, lovely staff, and great food!
R.
Love this place so much. Staff always friendly, great vibe, awesome selection of games, good beer and food. Highly recommend.
E.
A very fun, cosy cafe/restaurant where you can play a wide variety of Board games while you Eat and Drink some excellent food and craft beers/ciders/non-alcoholics. Their Mac and Cheese is one of the best in Wellington!
H.
An absolutely incredible little place to go! I've gone 3 times already this year, and have no doubt I will continue to keep going in the future. The overwhelming amount of games is made a whole lot easier by the amazing staff, who can help you and your crew find a game that is suitable by asking what you're into and what your skill level is. The pricing is super fair, overall a 10/10 place to go with a group of friends, whether large or small
A.
Counter Culture is a dream come true for board game lovers, offering a truly incredible selection of games alongside a menu of tasty treats, and super friendly service. Highly recommended!
J.
Every time I have visisted Counter Culture I have had a wonderful time. The board game selection is AMAZING and the staff are really friendly, helpful and a joy to deal with. I'll happily keep coming back, and recommend that others do too!
A.
Great selection of games, great atmosphere. A wonderful way to spend an evening and will be back again for sure
A.
If your into board games, then this is a must!! Highly recommend and the staff and owners are lovely people .
L.
Went here on a date night. Great place. So many games. The staff were great too. Food is ok, great to have so many vegan/vege options. Highly recommend.
L.
An amazing selection of games, some you wouldn't have seen or heard of before. Team super helpful to find the right game for your style of game play. Very relaxed setting. Limited food options for those who have varied diets, but great for most!
L.
Absolutely brilliant idea. Really cool experience trying out some boardgames that have interested me for a while. Food was yummy too! Will definitely be back when next in the area!
k.
Great place to while away a few hours! Hundreds of games to choose from, helpful staff to help you choose/explain the rules, delicious food (get the curly fries!) and a good selection of craft beers/other drinks. $5 to play for as long as you like. Would recommend booking a table as it's always pretty busy evenings and weekends
L.
Awesome, friendly, warm and an all round cool idea. For $10 or $5 with food/drink to play up to three hours of their incredible board game selection, what’s not to love.
L.
Always great place to hang out and play some board games. All the servers are lovely and have great game knowledge so 100% recommend
W.
Cool experience with the family. Guys behind the counters are very helpful and friendly. 100’s if not 1000’s of boardgames. Menu was a bit limited and the food was average which is a pity as this is a really fun thing to do with family or friends. Try to avoid the tables right in the entrance way in front of the doors especially late afternoon as the sun falls directly on the tables and it starts to feel like you are sitting inside an oven.
M.
Amazing selecting of games and reasonably priced. Both beer and food are genuinely good. Most staff are very helpful regarding games, able to assist with picking a game and often with learning the rules
It's worth reserving a table, especially for a group - even at funny times it can be fuller than you'd expect
L.
Tl:DR - Great place but staff needs to inform people before anything is purchased
I visited this place with my friends and partner, and there was a great selection of board games and tap beers.
The only improvement is that every staff member should mention about the $5 game pass, 'cause my partner only paid for his drink without being aware of it. My friends were then served by a different person and get immediately informed.
Unfortunately, we were on a relatively tight schedule so it'd have been nice to know about it before my partner sat down with his drink, therefore we could've gone elsewhere. I'd definitely revisit this place if I were to have an entire day to play various types of games available.
A.
Love this place! We have a regular group of four people that make a habit of going every few months if we can.
The only reason this is not a 5-star review is that we find the noise levels often become problematic, especially with large groups. Staff try and keep the noise levels down but with hard surfaces everywhere, a few wines and exponential fun it can become quite deafening at times.
On the brighter side the Game Masters that walk around and help you select games and teach you how to play them are amazing. These people really make the experience unique. Quite often we are not sure what game to choose. Anyone that has played board games knows that learning the game and rules can be challenging, so having someone walk you through it removes an element of potential frustration and conflict.
Food & Drinks are good. I feel for a place where you can spend 4+ hours the food menu could be a little more extensive. It does get a little boring eating the same staff over-and-over.
Overall love this place, and if they can do something to reduce the noise levels and maybe get a bit more creative with the menu this would be 5-stars hands down.
J.
I think these kind of board game bar/cafes are pretty popular in other countries but Counter Culture was the first if heard of in Wellington. It's a great addition to the city and is an easy and fun way to kill a few hours.
The selection of food seems really solid (we arrived just after a public holiday and food was light that day) coffee is tasty and there are a wide range of tap beers.
The game selection is really what you should be here for and there are a HUGE number ranging from Scrabble to Scythe.
I'd recommend booking if you've got a group but we arrived as a couple and found it was enough to get a table.
R.
Wonderful place. Huge selection of games to choose from and really helpful and friendly staff who will help you find and learn a game if you are looking to try something new. Food is excellent and drinks are top notch too with. A variety of draft and bottle options to pick from. My most visited bar in Wellington by a long way.
W.
Really cool boardgame bar in Welly, with a lot of choice, and very helpful and friendly staff. Sadly, even when you are six people and all ordering food and drinks, you still have to pay 5$ per person to use the games (instead of 10$ if not).
I found this a bit greedy, especially because the food/drinks is not cheap.
But we still had an awesome time and I highly recommend the place!
K.
Good price and loads of fun boardgames. Quite crowded but that's expected! Wish they had more board game cafes in NZ.
S.
Really enjoy the vibe of this place and the selection of games. Staff are really helpful, and the food is actually legitimately good (I'm used to ho-hum food in such places). No joke, the macaroni cheese and curly fries were a) a GOOD amount of food, and b) delicious!!
My only two gripes/suggestions are:
- the tables are pretty small which, when you are playing board games, is a bit not-ideal.
- they also have that persistent "sticky-bar" feeling, which I hate, and is a little annoying when you are playing games, but might just be a reflection of mixed purpose of this place. Maybe if sanitizing wipes are available at tables or something?
- this isn't a super down-side, but you now have to book because they are so busy!
- some more sweet options (like pastries or something) would be good, as lots of the food is quite heavy
TL;DR: this is a cool place to hang out, and I come here whenever I can :)
S.
Great venue! Would highly recommend for board game enthusiasts or to kill time. Great range of games to play and one of a kind in Wellington outside of your own home. Would say that a better range of foods and drinks would be Great, as well as a lounge area with perhaps more comfortable seats. Awesome place! 😊
M.
Fun! Good food and beer too. V helpful staff recommended games for us
C.
Brilliant little place, with an amazing board game selection. The only reason it isn't 5 stars, is I would love to see more easy snacking food on the menu. Otherwise, this place is great for an easy night/day in, with a few, or many friends :D
N.
Great place for socializing! Come in and try out a new table top game for as little as $5!! That's unbelievably cheap! The largest collection of tabletop games I've seen! There's a game for everyone, of all ages! They also serve coffee and snacks if you need them.
J.
The place to be in Wellington! We were in town for 10 days and spent 4 here!!! Welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great food, plenty of vegetarian options. Only 5 dollars pp to play for as long as you want. Over 500 board games, with a great up
-to-date selection. Only slight negative, could do with AC in warmer weather but this place still gets 5 stars!!!
S.
Great fun and good food. Great to have something different to do than the usual night out. Can be busy so recommend booking.
A.
Excellent board gaming café/bar, with a huge selection of games. The food is good, with vegan options available, and there are craft beers on tap.
Make sure you book in advance to guarantee your table, especially if you intend to play a longer game.
G.
Place is so popular you'll probably need to book a table in advance.
Game selection is excellent. They have almost all the popular and highly rated games for the past decade.
Food is great, with good vegetarian and gluten free options.
A.
Awesome place...we make sure we visit this bar/cafe everytime we travel to wellington. You don't have to be a lover of board games. Pretty good selection of craft beers rotating regularly. Food is fair priced, and yes their curly fries live up to the hype.
K.
This place is awesome! The range if games they have is astounding!! Huge range of family friendly games right thru to the more elaborate ones. If you have a couple of hours spare head along pick a game, enjoy a drink and even a snack!
J.
Lovely atmosphere and lovely people! Great selection of board games and all the best local crafts beers. They do yummy food and have vegan options which makes me really happy. Definitely recommend!
H.
A great gaming cafe. Plent of space with a big variety of games that you can play. There was quite a good range of reasonably priced food. Located conveniently on Victoria St, there are parking options nearby and a bus stop right outside the entrance. If you want to get together with a group of friends for a fun session of boardgaming this is your place. Highly recommended!!
A.
Board game cafe with lots of games and a good selection of food and drinks too. We appreciated their small selection guides like "if you have two players" or "bored of Catan" as well as their friendly hosts. Reservations do take over tables, so I recommend a booking if you want to ensure you can get in, especially with a group.
J.
You can get a beer and play a board game on Saturday night. Now I can finally invite my mates somewhere for a good time that isn't my shamefully messy living room.
Great selection of games from grand strategy to party games. We played a warm up game or two of exploding kittens and then moved into some party classics with articulate and dixit.
S.
Great time spent here. Booking advised if a larger party and definitely on weekends. The owner is so knowledgeable about the games - we had a mixed group and we found some games we really got into!
Definitely repeat visits are needed to play all the games!
M.
I'm a repeat here and love it. Bookings are very much needed, especially on Friday evenings. It's also possible to reserve games which I highly suggest if you have a specific game in mind to play. Excellent drinks, good snacks and really good food, but small portion sizes for price comparatively to near by food venues.
G.
Love the knowledge of the staff on board games and love the set up.
Games awesome
Drinks awesome
Food below par*
*Food was not great for the price charged. Mainly the veg burger was soaking in oil. Highly recommended for drinks and playing games. Not so for the food as is over priced for what you get.
Still awesome place
S.
Amazing and helpful staff, great atmosphere. All adds up to the fun night out
S.
WOW! What an amazingly fresh approach to a restaurant. Although geared towards the younger crowd, this is probably not the place to bring your grandma to for a bite to eat. Although… she might feel right at home if she wanted to play a game of Bridge. Oh and there are a few games available on offer. One is sure to find a board-game for any age or ability. Oh the food is great and the craft beer / soft-drinks even better.
J.
This board game cafe & bar has been such a favourite among my group of friends since it opened a year ago. For $5, you can stay and play a huge range of board games, or just chill out in the cosy atmosphere. They have everything, from your classic party starters to the most obscure strategy games. If you want some advice on where you start, just ask the friendly staff who'll have some recommendations for you.
Unlike a lot of themed cafes, the food and drink is truly top notch, with hearty burgers (fried chicken & kimchi), good coffee, a great selection of craft beer, and the best curly fries out (be sure to get plenty of their homemade smokey sauce). Bookings are a must, especially during weekends. I highly recommend getting a loyalty card (free entry every 5 sessions) because you'll be coming back more than you think!
G.
Excellent place for a relaxed evening, or a competitive one if you're a keen gamer. Good range of food and drink and a well stocked range of games. Staff are friendly and the atmosphere is cozy. If you are going in an evening I would recommend you book a table as it's popular.
B.
So much fun! We are not hard core board gamers but we love playing battleships, jenga, the logo game etc. A really great place to go for an easy night out with a drink and some fun board games
F.
First time and I went at 1130 with two six year olds. It was awesome! Great selection, friendly expert staff (thanks Jun) good value for money. Good times. Recommend and will definitely go back. Maybe next time in the evening for a few beers and games with friends : )
R.
My favourite bar ever. The widest selection of games I've ever seen in one place. Great selection of draft beers which change quite often. Lovely staff. All around one of my favourite places in Wellington.
R.
This place is great!
It's chill, it's bright and airy, everyone is friendly, they have food, alcohol, tea, and STACKS of boardgames.
It's fun and affordable.
Best with 4 or more people but honestly, there's plenty for a couple to do on a date and it's ambience is so nice!
T.
Great selection of games, good food, and the staff were super friendly and knowledgeable. The selection of games caters for the super casual right through to the serious gamer. Booking is essential though as it's not a huge place..
M.
Awesome place, never had a bad experience here. Have gone multiple times and plan to go many more. Staff are awesome and friendly, food is great. Overall one of the best spots in Wellington!
B.
This place is very cool! Only $5 for a whole day of games! Also serves coffee and food, their curly fries are amazing and at some point I definitely need to try their burgers. :)
A.
Great place if you like games. We went on a Friday night and it was good that we had booked as it was packed. Food ok, all tasty. Choices of craft beer plus plenty of other drink choices.
K.
The atmosphere is open and relaxed. Choose from nice coffee or an alcoholic beverage, pay a few dollars and while away an afternoon playing a number of different games. New and unheard of or old favorites to chose from, 1 player games or more. Great idea. Cool place!
O.
Huge selection of board games, real good food and friendly staff. Can get very loud on a Friday evening though and food can take a while, but it's alright if you've got and intense game to distract you.
B.
Massive selection of board games, with knowledgeable staff and a great drink and food menu. Very welcoming to new and seasoned players. I would highly recommend Counter Culture to any of my friends!
L.
Great service, great beer, great games
K.
Very fun place to spend a couple of hours. Great atmosphere, huge range of games to choose from, and delicious burgers. Looking forward to our next visit!
A.
Amazing place, so many fun games! Very friendly staff and great food options.
L.
My new favorite restaurant! The food was really nice - quality ingredients, and nice flavours. Awesome games and helpful staff to show us how to play something new. Well be back again soon.
T.
It was a really cool experience! Great food, great beer and great vibes. Was a little unsure on how it worked since we had never been before, but put our heads together and figured it out! Will surely be back :)
S.
Staff are really friendly, nice atmosphere and lots of board game choice. Food is delicious too.
M.
Great food, amazing game selection and good beers on tap. Staff are always friendly. Big ups.
E.
A must visit for anyone who has a board game fetish in Wellington. To say this place has it all would be an understatement, the games are literally crammed in from floor to ceiling. Good food and drinks, a warm friendly environment, and fun family friendly games (or not if your after excitement) what's not to love!!
R.
Love this place, perfect date night for me and my fella. The selection is massive and the curly fries are tasty.
B.
Keen to play this game! Mates don't want to, if you're interested hit me up and we can have some beers and give it a go!
R.
Gorgeous little cafe, very popular so can get quite busy. The food and coffee are definitely good. Can be a bit loud with a few tables enjoying a heated board game
C.
Lots of amazing games. Food a bit expensive though. But the place and staff are great! If you love boardgames and want to have fun, this is the place for you.
P.
Everything about this place is fantastic.... Except, don't sit next to the kitchen door, twice cards from the game we were blow onto the ground. We asked politely to have the door closed but seems some sort of health and safety issue got it the way of that.
S.
I had more fun in my afternoon at counter culture than I've had for ages. Choose a board Game, get a jug of beer and have some fun. The beer selection is ok, food is ok, coffee is good, the board game selection and atmosphere are great
B.
Super awesome games and super awesome staff. No place better to hang with friends, food, and fun.
B.
Plesant place to play a few games, good selection of beers and very family friendly.
L.
A very unique and fun place to hang out with friends for an evening. Gamers will be impressed by the number of traditional, retro and new board games found here to play.
L.
Sincerely delightful space. The food looks amazing, drinks, both alcoholic and non available, and the staff are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Will absolutely be back again and again
H.
This place is amazing! I cam here for a party and they have a huge range of games. Definitely recommend.
M.
Such a fun place! Perfect for dates and meetups with friends. They have a really good selection of games and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable
M.
Bit pricey for food, but I think you pay a smaller entry fee if you grab a coffee and you have access to a trove of well kept games. Probably better for more than two players, there wasn't a huge range of games for just a couple.
R.
Great café! Taste good and drinks with a wide selection of games. Friends and I stayed there for much of the day just gaming and having fun.
O.
Great service, great games! Had the best time with friends, would absolutely recommend for a great time.
G.
Huge selection of games, nice food and a nice choice of drinks, staff super helpful
M.
Great fun! Loved it, but had to faff around paying the bill.
T.
Finally - bar variety stars to hit the city centre. Board games, craft beer and good food - what's not to love?! Great selection of games and expansions, highly recommended.
S.
Loved the atmosphere, great beer, options for those who didnt want a drink. Great selection of games. Friendly staff
S.
Absolutely love this place! The people are always friendly and the game selection is awesome. Plus, there’s wine!
T.
Great staff, unbelievably onto it. When you are out of drink they are there! Great selection. Great atmosphere. Doesn't feel too niche like some places.
C.
Was good, lots of games to choose from. Food not the best, very salty fries. I suggest booking as it gets busy!
S.
One of the best places in Wellington. Highly recommended for any one who enjoys board games.
J.
Informal dining. Had heaps of fun. The staff were friendly and the food was excellent
P.
Great service, fun atmosphere, good value food and drink. All you could ask for!
M.
Great and fun atmosphere. Super helpful hosts for learning about the games library. Food is good too. That mac and cheese is pretty damn impressive
C.
Fantastic place to hangout. Great food and very friendly staff. And with the best tabletop game library in Wellington youll never run out things to play.
B.
Cool place. Great chance to try games before you buy them. Really nice food but they did charge for a hot water which I think is miserable.
T.
Love this place! Hundreds of games, helpful staff, top food and drink. Welly is lucky to have them!
V.
Nice place to explore a variety of board games. Comfortable and nice vibe. Shelene(?) was very helpful.
S.
Good atmosphere, and, a huge selection of board and table top games. There's also a game master on hand who is able to help you learn about new games should you wish.
s.

D.
Lots of fun, good food, hope to go again.

A.
Lots of games, make sure you book a table if you have a larger group and it's the weekend, great staff, good beer selection
M.
Great place, and lovely people. Has a lot of board games, and I mean A LOT.
Comfy and quiet.
The only things to be aware of is the very limited number of powerpoints.
S.
Excellent selection of games and very friendly staff. Great food and beer too!
T.
Popped over from the Wairarapa for lunch and a few games. Great place to try out the different games and a large selection. Friendly helpful staff and seems well patronised.
A.
Great, cozy atmosphere. Hundreds of different board games. Good food and drink too!
M.
Huge game selection, chilled out helpful staff, accommodated our large group. Decent beverage selection and great curly fries.
P.
Massive selection of games with helpful staff who are more than willing to recommend new games and teach them to you. Great craft beer too
T.
Awesome! Food was gr8, staff so helpful with game suggestions. Would definitely recommend
L.
Firstly it's a bar with great beer selection, secondly they have board games.... If you have stepped in some nerd and want to rub it off its a great place, fantastic staff, they have every game you can think of, not a very social place as people are locked into their own world, so only take who you want to hang with, if you love boardgames you should already be there.
J.
Fantastic place. And very helpful staff. If you are in Wellington and love boardgames this is the place to visit.
H.
Special shout out to the guy who chased us down the street because I forgot my hair tie on the table, bless you dude, I had gelato after that and without the hair tie I would have had hair everywhere!!! such a lifesaver, I don’t know what I wouldve done... games good also!! cant wait to go back
J.
Perfect for a rainy evening. Good deals on pitchers and tasty food. Board game selection is unimaginably good.
M.
Love this place - food is pretty good (love the curly fries!) and they have tons and tons of games. They take reservations!
F.
The waiter is great. Lot of choices of games
T.
The chips are fantastic. We went back for thirds. They have a huge range of board games to choose from for all ages.
g.
Fun and welcoming atmosphere. Lots of games to choose from
M.
Awesome cafe, great concept and staggering range of games. As another bonus the coffee here is some of the best I've had in Wellington.
B.
Awesome place. Play games, eat, drink. What else do you need? They have the best/biggest selection of games
P.
Awesome environment! First time I've ever been there so it was well worth it
T.
Absolutely lovely atmosphere and a great collection of games to choose from. Best to book ahead as it can be busy!

C.
Great selection of games, friendly staff, and the curly fries are delicious. Looking forward to coming back!
D.
Went for a quick coffee and noticed the oily film on my Americano. This happens when unfiltered/hard water is used. Id recommend a water softener / purifier to give your coffee a better taste
E.
Excellent range of games, with great snacks and drinks. You can play games whilst drinking tea or a beer. Fantastic 😀
S.
Counter culture is perfect for me. It has a great selection of games, good beer, and good food. All quite reasonably priced.
K.
Great place to hang out and play games - they have a ton of games, and the food they have is good too.

(Translated) There are many types of board games and it is always crowded and noisy. If possible, we recommend that you make a reservation in advance before visiting. The food is also a bit pricey, but tastes good.

보드게임 종류도 다양하고 항상 사람도 많고 시끌벅적 합니다. 가능하면 꼭 예약 미리 하시고 방문하길 추천합니다. 음식들도 가격대가 조금 있긴 하지만 맛도 좋습니다.
