Reviews of St John's Bar and Restaurant
P.
Greeted by doormen checking Vaccine Passport, Jasper was our waiter he was so lovely, meals were scrumptious, Venue was amazing Retro decor, 4 styles of seating in restaurant, bar, umbrella, bean bags/low seats, I would dine here with friends when I visit Wellington again
T.
Great service and friendly staff. Very communicative as to ask when we wanted each course to come out and gave us plenty of time to decide which we appreciated.
We had the BBQ Pork Belly, Jalapeño Rice Balls, Korean BBQ Chicken and their Loaded Fries were amazing, with pulled lamb and tzatziki instead of the bland bacon or beef mince and cheese. All of which was delicious. Also had a Mocha and a Mocktail that was like a Choco-Berry milkshake.
Also they take the new Covid regulations with mask wearing and vaccine passes seriously, as 2 of us are close to a high risk individual we really appreciated that.
Highly recommended and will definitely be coming back to try some more food. Cheers! 🍻

Situated in the beautiful old St John’s Ambulance building, St John’s is an idyllic spot to sit and soak in the summer sun. For the last few years they have embraced and expanded their front lawn area with an outdoor bar and DJ booth, adding to the summer ambience with bean bags and low tables surrounded by a picturesque picket fence. Surely one of the perfect Welly spots for a cold beverage and an afternoon of people-watching as the sun sinks west over the city skyline.
M.
This place has a good ambiance. They have a huge varieties of different alcoholic beverages. The staff was friendly. We were lucky to be first in as they just opened.
R.
Had the pumpkin gnocchi (got the last one) 😉 and it was outstanding. Light and fluffy and full of yummy flavour. My partner had the loaded fries with pulled lamb and tzatziki. Delicious. The staff were fantastic. Especially Lucy who was so friendly and attentive with some great recommendations. This was our first time, but will definitely be back.
K.
Cool bar it’s really awesome sitting outside on hot summer days drinking a nice cold beer. Anyways super friendly and helpful staff that give great service. They have a great selection of beers and wine’s. there whiskey selection is great. They have some good options when it comes to eating if you are vegetarian. The prices are very fair
S.
We booked the Igloo for our Flat-Dinner last night and it was absolutely amazing. The atmosphere, the service, the food and drinks. Honestly absolutely worth every cent. Apart from that I've been eating and drinking here before quite a few times in summer and it's always a great time with friendly and quick service and a great atmosphere.
J.
Went on Good Friday. Popular location.
Didn't go inside as was a beautiful sunny day, however outside good choice of table beside the building, or a more laid vack area with bean bags etc on the grass.
Food, drinks & service couldn't be faulted.
Well worth a visit
H.
We had a great couple of hours over indulging in the sun, great food and cold cold brews.
Friendly service , good music this is living people.
Keep up the great work st Johns five stars all day!!.
R.
Amazing food and great value. Always a good atmosphere in a cool art deco environment. Thought the ability to order from your table using Mr Yum was great and made splitting the bill super easy.
H.
Great pub with tasty cocktails and flavoursome small sharing dishes. Impressed with the art deco interior architecture which has been carefully curated with the vibe of this grand building.
G.
The food was delicious, enjoyable, and well priced, along with a host of very lovely and friendly staff (who even provided us with sunblock while sitting in the hot afternoon sun!). Would definitely return and reccomend for a meal out with friends (especially the sangria!!) :))
S.
Cant rate this place highly enough. Excellent service, food was exceptional!! Very cool resturant/bar and atmosphere. Wish we had found it sooner. Will be back
K.
A beautiful place near Te Papa, surrounded by beautiful scenery 🌹🌹🌹❤❤❤
S.
Lucy was the most amazing host - she made us feel so welcome! Would highly recommend any of the food we had, 10/10 experience from us xx
G.
Menu and wine list are limited. Could do better. Great spot - excellent opportunity to create quality offerings and a top class establishment.
A.
On a lovely Welly arvo we stopped here to get a drink.Lovely waitstaff and prompt service.
Menu looked good but settled for sangrias which were excellent. So good we returned the following afternoon.Downside was the bombom musak which meant very difficult to talk.
D.
Busy, bustling. Nice vibe. Lots of options. bottomless lunch was a cool idea. Paid set price ($49 today) and chose a lunch item and then have bottomless drinks. limited options for drinks but our group enjoyed. I had loaded fries which had pulled pork in it, very yummy.
M.
Catch of the day was great, lamb quite tough, tomato salad had more croutons than tomatoes... waiter did not know some of the menu items..maybe new. In general the place is clean and nice ambiance!
R.
So firstly if you wanna grab stuff off of the bar menu head straight towards the fried chicken, it was like tasting an entire roast dinner but in fried chicken form, I have never experienced anything like it and it was Amazing.
Secondly the loaded pulled lamb fries.... I don't even know where to start with this glorious creation, the chips are cooked to perfection, the jus is just the best tasting thing ever and the feta and mint on top just adds another flavour dimension that I had no idea I needed.
Also another bonus is the outstanding outdoor seating area.
A.
We stopped in here for lunch about 2pm on a Tuesday on our way to Te Papa. Not very busy so we were able to have a nice, quiet, relaxing meal. Neat place in an old art deco building on the waterfront just near the museum. Food was excellent, pictured is the chicken burger and a side of fries. Fries are more than ample for 2 people. They have American (Heinz) ketchup which was nice. They add lemon/lime to the coke products so if you're not a fan be sure to ask them to leave it out. Server was friendly and enthusiastic.
R.
Good meals great service, needs some noise reduction as it gets very noisy when the crowd comes in
M.
Came here for dinner on a Monday night and was quite impressed and would imagine at would be a great vibe on a busier night. There was a great selection of beers on tap and the food was nice noting that the portions were quite small. There were igloos like domes set up outside for small groups to sit in, which I never really got to the bottom of.
K.
Food was okay. Loaded fries where the best. The little domes look like they would be pretty cool to chill out in. You need to book them apparently.
N.
Great food! Although out of several things we wanted to order.
Great vibe on the public holiday with beanbags and lounge chairs on the lawn, people listing to a DJ and having fun.
Some staff seemed to not know what they were doing. First day in hospitality maybe?
We came here twice and enjoyed it for the vibe, cocktails and food.
S.
We had an awesome experience at St Johns for a hens do. Communication and service was excellent in the lead up to and on the evening. Kinda niggly with the minimum spend deposit... not sure how it could be done better but I think it could be!
Thanks again
w.
Lovely atmosphere for a couple drinks and chips to catch up with mates. Just wish they still offered jugs instead of bottles of sangria (was really nice by the way) 😊
T.
Went to a fantastic 21st birthday at The Eatery function area at the back of St John's Bar. It's a great space for any celebration. There was a wide variety of hot and cold platters... Steamed Bao Buns, Cheeseburger Sliders and the Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls were particularly tasty!
D.
St John's bar is an institution. The perfect place for an after work drink or a lazy Sunday afternoon on the sun.
The building itself is a stunning neo roman styled historic property and the bar has claimed the lawn out front and the sides of the building to create not-so-temporary outdoor seating options.
The bar menu is scarce but the hot wings and the fries are good options.
L.
We were really looking forward to an evening in this place. It is a fabulous art deco looking vibe and we just loved the raised seating. But when our food came out it was at best luke warm. The prawns were overcooked and really disappointing. The flatbread dish came with caramelized onions which where so white they were really awful. The drinks and cocktails were great and the service was ok but toward the end of the evening wait staff were less attentive and did not want to be bothered. An overall disappointing visit.
G.
Food was plentiful, although chicken spicier than planned. Flat bread particularly good. Staff friendly helpful.
S.
Food and service very good. The burgers were good value for money. Music too loud for afternoon enjoyment.
D.
Always great food, friendly staff and comfortable dining
D.
Scanning and showing vax passports aside, the bartender obviously had 'over Christmas' issues....popped in with a couple of work colleagues, quick drink before moving on to another restaurant for lunch. Asked if they had prosecco by glass, told to look at wine list. When I ordered a glass he said what one? I asked him to repeat, he was quite 'stern' and said what one! Just replied, the only one you offer on wine list' ...... he had to look himself, good way to learn exactly what you sell!!
L.
I was at a private function on Saturday...the food and service were first rate ..we had a wonderful dinner to celebrate a granddaughters 21st. I look forward to returning.
M.
Excellent bar with a quaint outdoor seating area - which is great on a sunny day because they leave out bean bags and deck chairs.
B.
The burger with a fried egg on top was a tasty filling lunch. At John's is always a good spot for a drink and a bite to eat
A.
The food and service were exceptional. Looking forward to next time.
R.
Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, good food and good portions.
J.
I came back with my friends for the WOAP burger. It's one of the best burgers I've had in Wellington.
On top of that, service is very good. Even when short staffed, they were still top notch. Definitely coming back more.
Shout-out to the nice girl that remembered us from the last visit (forgot to get your name, but you're awesome), and to the cool waiter that talked about games (Jasper or something? Sorry, bad with names)
P.
Great choice of food and good chat. I've been coming here for a few years now and the staff are always good fun and look after their clients. Sit Inside or when the Sun's out grab a beanbag and free sunscreen and enjoy the rays.
J.
Some friends and I hosted a small cheese tasting at St John's in the lounge and were really pleased at the level of service the team provided. Thanks St John's and team for being so friendly and accommodating, helping us to host a great evening for all that attended! We'll be back!
J.
Very nice ! Nothing better than a Heineken at St Johns on a busy sunny day ! The food is really good with a kitchen on a All-star level, the drinks selection is quiet large (good wines and spirits) and despite a high turnover the staff is really proficient ! A must to go in Wellington ! ++ The best hospo manager in Wellington is currently working there : Elliot O'Donnell (BEST MANAGER AWARD 2018-2019 🏆)
C.
St Johns is a great place for a get together in the waterfront. Went this weekend and had some great food and cocktails.
S.
Great food, cool views. We walked in in our casual wear and saw others dressed up. Can be a place for either! Stupendous music playing as well!
Д.
Nice, clean, presentable place but Menu is limited. Service was little careless, no enthusiasm.
K.
Walking past St John's with time on our hands and engaged with Jordan in friendly banter that encouraged us to go inside. For the next hour and half we were made to feel welcomed by Jordan, Adrien and Kristina..
Great hospitality. I hope your employers knows how good you guys are. Will be back. Thank you.
Tania and Kevin
J.
Starters were delicious mains just ok. Restaurant staff were great staff in the bar not so much.
K.
Had a wonderful evening for drinks. Jasper was very friendly and welcoming helping us find a table. Our waiter Bastian was exceptional making sure we were well looked after and had a great knowledge of the cocktail list and food menu - especially being GF and vegan.
J.
Delicious food from their impromptu kitchen, staff very helpful and friendly.
G.
The best service by far
Good selection on beer especially like the pilsner
The people there makes a difference
J.
Great food, warm friendly staff, great place
C.
Amazing spot for cocktails in the sun + high quality bar/restaurant food.
D.
Slightly chaotic with lots of reserved tables. Once we found a spot the small plates were generous and very tasty. And the chaos made up for with a round of drinks on the house, excellent customer relations.
M.
Went with some friends today at around 1pm and stayed for a few hours, the staff were so friendly and the service was really good. The poutine was yum. Will be back
S.
Good service, short wait time, food is nice.
Portion sizes are small for price. Toilets are a bit cramped. Overall ok
S.
Outdoor movies in the summer are awesome. Back to the future is a classic and watching it again with blankets and tequila is a great way to enjoy a movie evening.
C.
Slow service. Dirty tables had asked for a cloth to clean the table the server said the tables are always like that but dirt was on my hands I ended up using a baby wipe to clean my table which once I cleaned it the table was much better! Come on people you have to be more vigilant with cleanliness of your establishment especially at a time like this. Also if a customer asks for a cloth please just give them a cloth!
R.
Lovely ambience, delicious food. GREAT service. Place to be on a nice Welly afternoon.
Z.
Food was good. Weather was nice so outdoor seating worked well. Very enjoyable experience. The only downside is we assumed they were affiliated with St John's as it's in an old St John's building and named St John's. We were excited to support St John's through eating out later to find that it was not the case.
V.
Had great time with friends here, nice service, food are all really tasty, recommend the loaded fries.
J.
Had a fabulous birthday party here in the function room. The Art Deco style decor is just gorgeous. The staff were very attentive ensuring all our guests had drinks and canapés. Everyone had a great time. The food was great. A huge thanks to Ranui for everything, including leading the singing of happy birthday. That was above and beyond.
M.
We booked a table in the restaurant area. When we arrived we found 3 groups of people waiting to be attended to at the desk. My husband approached a staff member to secure our reservation. After some confusion about where we were to be seated we were seated in the bar area. The seating worked fine. We were given 2 menus, one of which was stained. It would be good to make sure your menus are clean.
The service was prompt. The staff informed us about last calls for coffee and the bar. The food was good. The bar was also not too noisy due to the high ceiling.
J.
Great atmosphere here for Wellington anniversary day. DJ out the front and everyone having a good time.
W.
Lovely menu, great value cocktails and awesome staff. Great location on the waterfront. What more could you ask for
J.
My partner and I recently booked one of the igloos for a date. It was amazing! It was really cute inside, super cozy, there were plenty of blankets and a speaker for us to play music. The staff were lovely, they brought us hot water bottles and were very attentive. The $49 each includes so much food! The starter board was really cute, the mains were delicious and the dessert was the perfect way to finish the night. We also got our first round of cocktails free. Highly recommend booking one of these for a date or a dinner with friends .
D.
Great happy hour option. Also great for an afternoon drink. Order at the bar and grab a table number, or sit at a table and wait for a waiter to see you’re there. We found the bar was far quicker. Good for a decent meal. Very casual-burgers and fries type of food. Does the trick with a nice outdoor seating area.
A.
Delicious food and friendly staff. I wish I had ordered more of the small plates.
R.
Went here after work last Friday for snacks and cocktails !
I haven’t been here in awhile but after a few mates have recommended that the place was doing some great things recently I was really eager to try it again ,
We got Prawns, fried chicken, Jalapeño rice balls between 3 of us and they were of a v high quality , so fresh and tasty .
The cocktails Wer also exceptional and great value .
The thing that impressed us the most tho was the service !
From start to finish the staff went above and beyond for us . We were never waiting for anything and the servers Wer so pleasant and knowledgeable ! Highly recommend going here for any occasion . It’s gonna be our new go to on a Friday evening from now on . Well done to all involved !! Keep up the good work
H.
Love heading to St Johns when the weather puts on a show, great space outside (equally inside also) but we all want a tan with a gin lets be honest - they even provide suncream!
Always great vibes, staff are super friendly and the food is yum.
R.
Great atmosphere, friendly staff, great service, great experience 👍 Thanks St John's 😊
R.
We ate here last Saturday and it was very busy. The staff were exceptional and the food also, we'll certainly be back again to this beautiful venue! Keep up the good work!
C.
Great spot. We we had a lovely Italian waitress who was really excellent
H.
A nice location and friendly staff. My fish (Catch of the Day) was very good but I was not impressed with the fries for my little granddaughter which we ordered for lack of any items for kids on the menu. I had particularly asked for a child sized portion but we still received the big bowl which is far too much for a 3 year old. This would not have been so bad if the fries had not been spiced with a very strange spice - I tried them too and found the taste very weird, so how can you expect a child to like them?
S.
Had the Cos salad with added chicken for lunch. Whatever the dressing was, it was amazing! The location couldn't be better. Super easy to order with the New Zealand Venue Co app too, I'm a convert!
G.
St John’s is always a good shout to catch up with friends. Great food, great atmosphere and a great selection of gins. Highly recommend especially on a sunny day in Wellington, they have a great outdoor space.
L.
Food was amazing! The chef really understands and delivers on flavour profiles. Lovely food experience. Other aspects were not so spectacular. It took about an hour to receive our first course. We were promised waterfront seating with great views of new year's fireworks, which absolutely wasn't the case. The curtains had scorch marks and burned holes. Not the best atmosphere, but phenomenal food.
m.
The staff were very friendly, the food was really good and the place is neat and tidy. Had a very good time.
D.
Nice venue, very ambient, gorgeous building and quality fit-out. Recently renovated too. Reasonable beer selection, food looked nice. Unfortunately were out of my preferred beer, but I'll certainly be back here. I've been back regularly, their new menu's great, so bumped to 5 stars!
n.
Great food and an excellent range of top shelf drinks and beers. Bar service is a little too casual for such an obvious up-market establishment.
J.
Yum yum yum! The portion of the food is smaller, that would mean u need to order a main and a side dish to make up your meal. The roasted cauliflower looked so charred but it was the best cauliflower I have tasted in my life! Also the price is affordable, good place to hang out with friends
T.
Great starters, but our salads lost their way a bit and became more about the unhealthy ingredients that they contained. Lovely salmon but very small portion. Great venue and location, perfect for an evening stroll afterwards along the seafront. Delicious cocktails.
M.
Great atmosphere. Helpful and friendly staff. One page menu is always a good sign - they know what they do excellently and stick to it. Great choices food and opportunity to make up bespoke combinations of plates for a meal. Fantastic quality, taste, and ingredients. Extensive drinks menu with excellent choices. Very reasonable tariff.
J.
Had a wonderful time here for Christmas lunch. Enjoyed it thoroughly.
M.
Great place to be before an All Blacks game in Wellington. A walk to the stadium saves on taxi costs. Staff were friendly and service was good. Unfortunately our food order ended up going to another table so we had to wait for a second to be prepared and served. They treated the situation professionally and we were all happy in the end.
M.
Awesome spot, superb food and friendly staffs.
K.
The plates are nice but small. Treat them like tapas to share and that will work well. The Angus steak was my favourite, medium rare pink, perfect. Kumara gnocchi was slightly expensive for the portion size, though I liked the slightly chewy texture, which is how I like gnocchi, though someone else at our table didn't like it because it wasn't the traditional pillow soft gnocchi. Desserts not recommended, disappointing and a bit overpriced. Service was pretty good, staff were friendly and efficient. Overall vibe was good, music could have been a fraction softer to allow easier conversation but that's nit picking.
T.
After struggling to find the way in, we were greeted by a guy Vespa who made our night mint as. He got us a mean table, got us food and drinks and smiled the whole time. Legend.
G.
It's a comfortable bar in the centre of the city. At the moment they have set up some bookable domes outside that look comfortable. They serve a reasonable selection of beer and food. The staff are polite and friendly. I think they do bean bags in summer. I'd check them out if you're nearby!
N.
Nice situation between the main city and the waterfront. Excellent beer selection and a reasonable menu. Mind you along with two salads we selected the half chicken piri piri, but were surprised to get five thighs. Does this equate to a ten-legged chicken ? Can't complain about the taste however and the service was pretty decent.
B.
Great bar with lovely food, drink, and service.
It tends to be busy all the time and it's probably a good idea to book a table if you want dinner on a Friday/Saturday night.
It's perfectly located as part of the waterfront area.
S.
St John's never fails to impress. As an ambulance service or a bar. They're outstanding! The food, the atmosphere and the wait staff. Very rarely have anything to fault. Thanks again for the pleasure Mr. St. John. Love ya work!
M.
Oh nice place again. We have a very enthusiastic lady who organizes a great professional network session with amazing people attending the event. I go 😊😊😊😊 it's every month and oh, just awesome how we talk about so many things and meet up with some interesting people each time ⌚⌚⌚ great use of the time 👔🎓⌚👓😉👑👕 not sure why my phone suggested that crown and shirt.... But there must be a code I can't crack 😂😂😂😁👚... Probably, dress up well to go there and feel like a royal?!? 👑👑👑👑
H.
It was a very hot day so we opted to have our drinks in the airconditioned area. But a lot of people were enjoying the outdoor seating, including beanbags spread out across the green area. Service was good. Drinks were served promptly. We did not have anything to eat, but the food we observed seemed good.
A.
Good indoor-outdoor flow at this bar. I was impressed by the range of food - smaller dishes for reasonable prices. The atmosphere here is enjoyable and laid-back, with various seating arrangements on the lawn outside and a central location on the waterfront. I'll be coming back.
G.
Great range of keg beers, cocktails and wines. Extensive outdoor space, whether at a table or on the lawn.
J.
The Food was fantastic. The service was friendly, if a little slow. However the restaurant was packed, so cant really complain about waiting a couple of minutes for drinks.
M.
Great atmosphere, stunning day hard to go wrong. Food yummy and quick turn around for hungry tummies.
Helpful staff chicken and loaded fries on point.
Will be back.
C.
Outstanding food and experience. GF pumpkin gnocci were delicious and great flavour!
Beautiful decoration and great views of the waterfront. Will recommend and be back.
M.
Best place in Wellington city while there is a southerly and sunshine.
Nice outside area and just wonderful in spring and summer.
Newly renovated, haven't tried the new restaurant yet but hope to do so shortly.
4* which will become 5 as soon smoking is banned on premises inside or out.
H.
Had an amazing time here, Jordan in particular went out of his way to provide a beautiful service for me and boys. 10/10 will come again
S.
Best experience ever. Delicious food and amazing service! Josh our waiter was very attentive and kind. Can't wait to go back next year!
F.
Good atmosphere and great service. Food is OK.
C.
Food is relatively average given their prices, there is however plenty of room to eat it with ample seating ... I personally, got the impression the staff were somewhat uninterested and lacking a friendly vibe which unfortunately gets under my skin considering the expense I usually generate over the duration of my visit to Bars and Restaurants in general. Average overall rating as far as recommendation goes!
K.
Lovely staff good cocktails but watered down, still fun and the chicken is the bomb!!
L.
The menu has changed since I had previously visited, it has gone from main meal offering to share plates. Share plates to be successful need to be standout on their own and sadly st John's doesn't measure up. The food is disappointing, only the fish was beautifully cooked but it required something else to be eaten with it (i had a salad). Service was ok, extensive drinks list and a good location but to be honest there are better restaurants in the vicinity of this area.
P.
Have been here for a couple of work related functions. Nice atmosphere, tasty food. Quite an upmarket feel. Location near the water is beautiful.
Recommend the lamb dinner meal.
F.
After a hard day of walking around Wellington and shopping St John's is a relxing place to sit in the open air and have a drink or two. The dj played laidback music that only added to the atmosphere.
S.
Bar service guy is quite nice and friendly.Food prepare speed is not too long. Just happy with their food and service. Recommend it
A.
Thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas lunch. Staff friendly and professional.
P.
Spent New Year's eve here. Brilliant value, amazing staff and ideal location. Food great too. Had use of reserved table all night, and could come and go as we wished. Highly recommended.
E.
Lovely place. Went when they had the covid igloos, which I honestly cant rate highly enough. Private warm and just a lively experience.
Pretty reasonable prices too.
G.
It was really fantastic food and atmosphere but not cheap. It was concerning the two mice running around the dining space behind the curtains. They said it was not from the kitchen and was being sorted. Not a great look though.
s.
Great outdoor seating with bean bags and coffee table. Hard to get a spot in a sunny day. Services are quick and easy, pay at ur table with mobile eftpos machine. Great food menu and bar menu. Wide selection of beer both on tap and bottled. Great location. Highly recommend.
A.
Very funky waterfront bar. Great table service. Cool lawn with lots of beanbags and picnic rugs. Cool summer tunes. Great place for an evening drink. Inside has a very cool fit out too
R.
Had their signature big breakfast, which was great. Went with two toddlers and surprisingly they had bumbo chairs! It was a nice, warm and chic retreat from a pretty blustery Wellington morning!
M.
Great venue, our original plan for today was cancelled and we were able to book St Johns at short notice, nice food, good value, definitely recommend this restaurant, realized it was called St Johns as it was the old ambulance station for Wellington
L.
Stopped here on a Sunday afternoon because the outdoor area looked good in the sun The service and food was great ! Had the burger which was delicious and will definitely be back
J.
First time at St John and ordered a beef burger and a glass of Pinot Noir. Good and tasty food and wine. The staffs were very friendly and helpful. The inner part of the restaurant is very nice and cosy. Outdoor sits are available in summer.
L.
Found this place while walking along the wharf in downtown. It was a gorgeous autumn day with the sun shining and I was starving and in need of a cold drink. There were bean bags strewn across the lawn area in front the historic looking restaurant front and I wasn’t sure at first if you could get service there or if it was just a public “lounge” area. I found a large comfy bean bag next to a little table and basked in the sun for a minute or two before an attentive waiter came over with a menu.
I ordered a beer and their lamb app. The beer came out quick and deliciously cold and the lamb took a bit of time, but it was worth it as it was cooked correctly, the meat was tender and flavorful, and for an app, it was very filling!
They have an excellent selection of drinks (loved the local beer offerings) and a robust menu. I would definitely have come back for a full on lunch or dinner had I had more time in Welly.
h.
Very good bar especially in the afternoon. Sit outside on the bean bags, drink a beer, chat to friends and bask in the sunlight. The staff are super helpful and seem very on top of things and their contrasting personalities add tonnes of character to the place.
G.
All the food was fantastic here. I'm fussy & rarely give a restaurant more than 2-3 stars
G.
Just had a wonderful night at St John's. Thanks for Bastian for making my romantic night so special. Will definitely return.
J.
Delicious food, friendly attentive staff, the best dinning experience in ages...we will be back !
P.
A great bar with less pretension than before. Food is great and the choice of craft beers is pretty decent. Great to see they have a special brew (First RESPONDER IPA) that have all proceeds going to the ambulance service.
S.
Great service and well priced drinks, was busy Thursday afternoon but still able to get a drink quickly, nice outside area and good clientele. Great start to the night but it’s a shame about the rest of the bars/clubs & Wellington locals if you’re looking to go out after, be aware of your surroundings because the people there are weirdos.
M.
Lovely place to sit in the sun, catch up with friends and have a drink. The updated menu is nice with a good selection of tasty bites. They're also dog lovers as well, so bring that furry friend along.
J.
This place is so hit and miss. A good menu and drink selection but the service is either fantastic or very mediocre.
On this occasion the service was pretty poor.
P.
We liked the ambiance, the different style of menu and the food itself. We didn't like the distracted, disinterested waitress and the miserable barman. Perhaps we just hit a bad hair night.
N.
Service was not good. Their concept of gnocchi would make an Italian cry. The place is nice though, and food was OK if you don't compare it with what it says it is.
R.
Nice wine and liked the area ended up in. The first place had a weird ceiling leak but once figured it out moved to a great place. Like it
D.
Went for a few drinks after work on a stellar Friday afternoon. We imbibed across a good variety of beers and snacked on some fries. The only thing that wasn't too flash was the cost of the hot chips at $9. Nevertheless, I'd like to try out the restaurant some time.
P.
Art deco interior style is a great touch. Bean bags in the summer on the grass is great. Very central. Good place to meet. Has a bar and a separate white table cloth dinning area.
E.
Went for work's Christmas lunch. Choice was pretty limited and the bread was stale. When the mains came the steak was overcooked (asked for medium rare) and the dessert was supposed to be a trifle but it was sponge cake with cream, custard and strawberries. It was free since work paid but wouldn't spend my own money for that. Service fine although when I mentioned the stale bread no one apologised.
G.
Beautiful building with a great outdoor area. Service was good. Far and friendly.
The selection of beers available was surprisingly ordinary for a Wellington bar. That really sums up this place.
A.
V nice, great staff, unique 1920's esq with a modern touch decor. Fast beverages incl coffees
S.
Great food and the service was top notch on a really busy Saturday afternoon. Definitely recommend.
A.
Food and coffee is good, however were very understaffed which meant staff were frazzled and missed our coffee orders. On a weekend with school holidays and shows on in Wellington I would make sure you have more staff to accomodate the amount of people.
A.
Great vibe and really friendly staff that look like they are having a great time working there food is delicious and reasonably priced.
I really enjoyed my visit thank you.
M.
Informed, helpful wait staff. Lovely variety of tasty dishes. Warm environment with great 30s vibe. Recommend!
A.
Great food and very nice service except for having to queue to order no table service!
N.
Jasper took great care of us, going over an beyond.
Can't wait till next visit.
C.
Cool place to bee, with an beautiful possibility to sit outside.
C.
Fabulous meal great service
B.
Nice price for a place in the heart of Wellington. The food was delicious. Only a slight mess up with the order which meant 1 plate arrived out 10mins later than the rest.
S.
St. John's is a struggle. The outdoor seating is nice, the beer selection okay, and the interior decor wonderful. But the music and the usual crowd just aren't what I'm looking for. It is often full, so other people must appreciate its charms.
C.
Generally, A nice place to have a drink but the music was so loud you had to yell at each other to talk. Prices are pretty high but to be expected in CBD Wellington
J.
Lovely food and great service, dining room area quieter than main bar. M add on bar very chic but gets a bit clamorous
I.
Very fresh, modern chique and rustic at the same time. Delicious food, basic but 100%. Fantastic service. Definitely recommend SJ bar&restaurant.
D.
Had a really chilled brunch here. Baby in a buggy was welcome and tgere was another breastfeeding mother on the next table over.
You can't beat Wellington on a good day and you can't beat St John's on a Wellington good day. Nice view of the lagoon.
H.
The pumpkin gnocchi is absolutely delicious!!
Staff are attentive but not overbearing. The perfect spot on a summer evening 🌞
S.
Super cool staff. Flexible. Nice atmosphere. The food is yum, give the cauliflower a go!
N.
We had a work function here and the room we had was very cool, intimate with a comfortable lounge area.
R.
Very tasty food. Nice selection and able to pick salad and meat seperately. Lovely spot to eat outside on a nice day.
S.
The best spot for a Heineken on a warm summers afternoon in Wellington. Unfortunately they know this and it's also one of the most expensive bars in Wellington. The food and the service are both excellent.
S.
Enjoyed WOAP Burger and the matching beer.
D.
Amazing staff, tall guy with glasses was great and friendly. Bottomless brunch started off rough but food was fab and drinks flowed!!!
Y.
The small plate specials are good deals! Food is good, a little bit too salty though.
R.
Great location and lovely food
S.
First time at this bar, with a friend, found a perfect spot in the corner, love the raised lounge type seating, service was attentive and friendly, a great view of the restaurant, great food, decadent chocolate tart, awesome atmosphere. I'd definitely go back
D.
Great staff, great location, great service. Party thoroughly enjoyed their steak but the vegetarian dishes were both pedestrian (I'm being polite). Beetroot and kumara...
J.
One of the best (and only) sunny outdoor spots in Wellington - St John's is a good choice during daylight hours. It has a decent range of mainstream beers, ciders, and wine. There are also plenty of options for snacking on. The crowd gets a bit borish after about 6pm on the weekends, playing host to more trashy types and plenty of bachelor/bachelorette parties.
J.
Great for a beer in the sun outside and they have some decent craft beer available (unlike a few years back). Food is good but a little pricy for what you get.
J.
Great staff, friendly and good food.
A.
Great place to chill out with mates outside... Drinks are a bit pricey but they're top quality. Overall service is ideal
D.
Great place, awesome vibe especially on a sunny day and the lunch was awesome.highly recommend you giving it a go
R.
Life Saving Beers cheers St John's.
I'll be donating this year.
D.

P.

R.
Excellent friendly staff. Quick service - even when it was flat out. Food was delicious. Visited twice. Would definitely go back when I go to Wellington again.
S.
Fun place in the sun with bean bags and lots of outdoor seating. Sat and watched the "Biggest Little Circus" last weekend with the kids and other friends. Lively atmosphere.
L.
The service staff were friendly. The food was good quality if not a little expensive. It was a busy night and there was some order confusion and inconsistent service
L.
The place is great with outdoor seating and best for sunny days. The beer is great too. The food is just average though.
C.
Best chicken and pesto burger. Loved watching the cocktail guys. Very professional!
M.
Inside a glorious building, catches the late sun and plenty of outdoor seating. If only they had a better beer selection. Great service.
T.
Great atmosphere and great beer! Its the perfect place to meet friends after a long week at work!
A.
This is a nice place to just chill with friends and a beer. they have seating outside as well as some bean bags which you can grab and sit on the lawn. They even have tap beers which is good.
H.

Overpriced, average beer selection, service is slow at the bar, they are friendly enough though... Its just a great place on a sunny day outside.
L.
