Reviews of Bar Magda
Y.
We heard a lot of positive review about Bar Magda and finally managed to pop by to Bar Magda for dinner with a three years old in tow on Saturday evening. A bit crazy we know. We were very nervous and ensure to check with the restaurant if there is a child policy and we are allowed to bring a preschooler. Carlo kindly and promply advised Bar Magda is welcoming anyone.
When we get in to the restaurant, straight away loves the vibes, we located in the corner which I thought very thoughtful of them keeping us under the radar with a kid. The service were amazing! Never left the glass for water empty, everyone very knowledgeable of the menu, and they treated us as a group of three people, provided everything (side plates, cutleries, napkins, etc) times three straight away no question asked.
We ordered a non alcholic Blackberry and Feijoa from the something sour section for drink and they are yum! Very fresh and refreshing. If I am not being mindful they were gone within a minute.
For food we ordered the roasted chicken and duck liver parfait, Magda salad, corn polenta, chicken bbq ‘Inato’, pork and duck albondigas, lamb ribs ‘pyanggang’, and chocolate marquise for dessert. Wow wow wow wow!!!!! They were super delicious and so thoughtfully put together. I agree with all the previous positive reviews I read about Bar Magda. The food (and combination of ingredients) is not something we tried before but somehow they works and so yum! Our favourite would be the parfait and lamb ribs. Our daughter ate 1/3 of the parfait and almost 2 ribs. She tried everything and loves all the dishes (the chicken a tiny bit too hot for her but fixed with a glass of water 😝). We definitely will be back for walking our way through the menu.

Great place for date night. The setting is interesting- an underground restaurant/bar with dim lighting which sets an air of mystery. The food was well thought out/interesting paring, with a Filipino influence and the taste is unique to what I have experienced (I like recreating meals that I've had and I would have no idea where to even start with Carlo's dishes). The standout dish for me was the pork/duck albondigas (Carlo's' family secret recipe), followed with- parsnip w almond/coconut sauce and the lamb dish. Carlo and the team run a very smooth operation, they were all very helpful but at the same time, were not intrusive. Would recommend this to any foodie who wants to try something different!

You can immediately sense Carlo’s passion for his food and his Filipino heritage. The service was warm and welcoming without being intrusive. We had the set menu and we were impressed by the unique flavors of each dish that built on the flavors for the next course. Worth a visit to this distinctive establishment.

We had a terrific meal and experience at Bar Magda. The food was excellent - interesting, well thought out, and beautifully presented. The waiter was very knowledgable, and struck a perfect balance between attentive and non-intrusive. The restaurant has a dark and intimate atmosphere. Highly recommended.

What an experience! Especially the set menu! Just let your waiter know your dietary needs and preferences and the chef will take your taste buds on a wonderful journey of warm and cold delicacies! Add the wine pairing and the sommelier will round your experience up with the perfect drop of wine you most likely never heard of. The ambience and choice of music gives of some European metropolitan vibes. Am I in Berlin or what? Excellent service, excellent food, excellent vibes. Will be back!

Fantastic food. We had the two course $55 menu and everything went so well together. Attentive waiters and great atmosphere. So so good. Still thinking about my dinner!

Popped in with friends on a humid warm Saturday evening thinking the underground restaurant would be air conditioned, unfortunately it wasn’t and it was sweltering. It was so hot me and other punters were busy trying to cool ourselves down rather than trying to enjoy the food. Tables around us used menus to fan themselves and one table that arrived after us left before us because it was so hot. I literally can’t remember the food because most of the time we were distracted by keeping ourselves cooled down. Such a shame, I’ll definitely go back in winter but certainly not in summer until y’all invest in a proper air conditioning system and not random floor fans plotted on the bar and floor which moved warm air around. We literally downed our food and wine so fast just to get out of there. Bar staff were friendly (and sweaty) and the host was super cool

The Magda team really know how to provide a great all-round experience! The food is amazing, as are the cocktails - creative, delicious, beautifully served. The bathroom's sound system is a bonus - a touch of the venue's past. There's a lot of good food in Auckland but few places get everything right and offer something unique. Magda is one of these places.

Cool little hidden gem on Cross street. If you are after a cool little venue for either dinner or to finish your night off, then Bar Magda is the place to visit. Friendly staff, amazing food and a very impressive cocktail list.
