Reviews of Giraffe
P.
Great decor, music a wee bit loud for easy conversation.
Most of us enjoyed our meals, the whitebait was amazing. A few of us weren't completely happy with our mains, but one didn't read description properly. Desserts were great, especially the mini ones (can't remember name)
L.
Great service and location, a memorable place to have our first post lockdown breakfast. Amazing food. A must visit if you are in Auckland.
I.
Nice and modernise restaurant. Food were nice with decent size of mains. Really enjoy spending my quality time with my love one. However, there is open ceiling to next door Mexican restaurant. It was loud and noisy from the next door Mexican restaurant. Need to raise my voice to talk. Will still go back for more occasions.

We ate here for Xmas lunch and while the food was good, we were let down by our waiter forgetting to put our orders in which meant other tables who arrived after us were were served before us. Having previously worked in Hospitality it was quite disappointing to have it happen on more than one occasion during the Lunch. The Waiter in question definitely wasn't run off his feet.....
m.
First of all, service. Wow the staff are amazing.
The cocktails were epic and interesting.
We ordered the pork belly table platter. Excellent and enough food for 4-5 adults. The salad was brilliant too, just a touch of salt makes a Caesar salad. I am told the fries were of a similar standard.
I should say thats the pork after two adults ate off it! Amazing. Will be back to try the duck and beef platter.
I.
Excellent breakfast. We had one of the best egg benedics ever, with home cured salmon on roasted kumara. Gluten free too which suits me perfectly.
A.
We had a wonderful dining experience at Giraffe. The food was superb! Duck leg confit was perfectly cooked and presented beautifully. Delicious tiramisu and very nice coffee. The service was great, they made us feel welcome from the beginning and looked after us very well. The restaurant has a beautiful fit-out, lovely atmosphere, stunning bathrooms and was very warm inside, which is lovely on a cold and rainy day. We will definitely be back, as we would like to try more of their food (we really liked the look of other dishes delivered to tables around us), and their cocktails. The restaurant also has a great location, it's right in the heart of Viaduct Harbour, with lovely views to marina.

Fxxxxxg Amazing!
This was the answer I gave my sister when she asked me how my dinner tonight was.
I’ve been eating so much food recently. Like luxury delicious food. I eat so much I’ve lost interest in eating. I don’t even feel like eating crayfish recently, and I love crayfish.
When I came into giraffe I was expecting another standard European restaurant with a sarcastic “Woopie”.
My daughters kids meal came along and it was like a full kids degustation with duck fat chips and perfectly cooked pasta. The ribs was ok. The dessert was too good for kids to understand and enjoy.
Then came our entree smoked Kahawai sandwich. Our eyes lit up and I was like “dayum son!” Wow, finally something different and creative.
Then came pork nose to tail. Cheeks and tail. The green sauce was delicious. Better than any lettuce wrap I’ve had. A must try as well.
Cured eye fillet was good. Like better than most restaurants. But I was still in shock with the previous dishes.
The king crab was out of this world. I literally had to close my eyes to taste the mixture of flavours. A must order or you might as well not come to this restaurant.
Portuguese duck was kinda like soy chicken and gravy. Sounds bad but imagine luxury soy chicken and gravy. I personally love seared duck breast more, I make the best duck breast with my sous vide and cast iron. But this was still extremely good. More Asian than Portuguese.
Fillet of fish was amazing. Was told the fish was tarakihi! Which is usually tough as it’s easy to overcook so I was a little reluctant to order. I’m not sure how this was done, at first I thought maybe sousvide, but then there was a wrap around the fish so probably steamed. Cooked perfectly. Very very VERY impressed. The vege salad on top was not necessary. My daughter ate half the fish. And she doesn’t usually eat fish unless its sous vide groper. This was a lot better I have to say.
We only had a chance to eat 1/3-1/4 if the menu today. Let me rest for a bit and I will be back to try the social feasts menu which looks amazing too.
The waiter was amazing. A gentle gentleman with a stylish full beard. Unsure at time, but polite and genuine. One of the best waiters I’ve met in a while. I feel guilty not tipping.
Also every dish came with new cutlery. Awesome ambience and was just perfect. Be in for a treat. Bring anyone along and get ready to be blown away.

Really nice restaurant in the viaduct. The entrance is off to the side which makes it a bit hard to find but keep an eye out for a giraffe and you'll know you're at the right place.
We came for one of the Grabone meal deals for a degustation at the counter. Even though it was for a voucher, the service was impeccable. I quite enjoyed it since it was fairly casual and slow-paced. We just enjoyed the range of food at our pace and was served the next course when we were ready. The "olives" were interesting. I quite enjoyed the mussels and pasta dishes. I also liked watching them create the dishes since we were sitting just in front of them. We watched them brulee our dessert just before serving us. I really enjoyed both the food and the experience.
M.
Good, but not that good.
The food is great and the service professionals and pleasant, and the set menu good value when you choose the wine pairing.
Downsides to this place are (1) the bar which make it noisy and take away any chance of it being a place to enjoy fine dining, (2) the open kitchen which is kind of untidy and highlights that cooking here (during service) is more an assembly process rather than cooking.
A.
Had the green eggs and ham (Dr Seuss fan). It was very good, and generous proportions of parma ham. Great coffee, although wasn't extra hot but was extra warm.
A.
Nice place for a quick breakfast, lunch or a proper dinner. Last time we were here, the service was way too slow for such an establishment with not super cheap prices, but it was understandable as they had two waiters for the whole floor. The food is delicious though, it looks amazing and tastes awesome. We will be back here for more.
S.
Great food, great vibe
A.
First trip was good. It was during the festive season. We didn't get a window seat even though we requested asked at time of booking and saw a few tables came free. Food was good. My chocolate dessert was great but my friend didn't enjoy hers. Lemon cheesecake .
M.
We had great expectations around going to Giraffe and so saved this for the last evening of our 3-week trip around New Zealand. Unfortunately the restaurant did not live up to the hype. We found the Trevally Crudo to be rather ordinary and the lamb shank was insipid. The only saving grace was the ravioli which was excellent. The place was full of energy and our server was terrific. But this was, nevertheless, not in the top 50% of the many restaurants we dined and lunched at across the North and South Islands.
L.
great place for a special occasion. Food quality is excellent, and all the dishes are well prepared. I really liked the pork Wellington, meat was fatty and the pastry was flaky. The sirlon steak is also excellent. The portion sizes are a bit small, like most fancy places. Service was good, and wait times weren't too long for lunch.
M.
Lovely location. Great service. Best eggs bene I've had. Came on kumara rather than bread - excellent for those with gluten intolerance and delicious too.
M.
Did not have reservation on Saturday night but was seated within 10 minutes. Starter was beef fillet steak which was topped with cheese and capers. Mains was lamb rack was nicely cooked and the pumpkin was a great match. Good list of cocktail drinks available as well as beer and wine. Service from the waitress was refreshingly honest and fun, made the night.
S.
The food here (especially breakfast) is really amazing. If you’re staying at the sebel hotel, this should be your go to place every morning! Great cocktail list, great service, amazing food, even better location! Highly recommend.
J.
Good looking waiters dressed in nice outfit and call you madam.
Great view at the waterfront.
A bit more pricy food than local cafe.
The above made me feel I am on a vacation.
Tried the famous pancake, it’s ok. Not amazing in flavor and texture.
M.
New, all day (7am-late) eatery in the Viaduct area. Great location with great views of the harbor. We were in for breakfast and the Moroccan eggs were delicious. The service was excellent - friendly and attentive. The layout is open and airy with views of the kitchen - where the owner was overseeing the activity this day. Ingredients are fresh and the menu is creative. Pastries and bread are wonderful as well. It's too bad we aren't locals or this place would become a habit.
K.
Came for xmas lunch with my wife. Yummy starters but only OK mains, steak and turkey were both overcooked. Service was good but wish they would have offered the freebie orange dry ice to all customers, missed out my table :(
B.
Dinner for 4 at this much talked about place. Food designed for sharing and a few of us have ordered a drink as well to go with the meal. Dishes are in general well made some have quite surprising factors. We had three courses and say about a drink each came to $80 per person.
T.
Our girls night out dining experience was held at Giraffe by Simon Gault in the Viaduct and from moment of entering the restaurant, we were most attentively greeted and escorted to the bar for cocktails before being seated at our table.
We ordered cocktails such Candy Passion, Black Sam’s Pit and Espresso Macartini and these were a preview of an exceptional dining experience ahead.
We had the pleasure of meeting Simon Gault at our table and this was a wonderful touch.
For dinner, we enjoyed the Giraffe Crudo, Tagliatelli, Spaghetti, Pinched Ravioli, Duck Fat Chips and Giraffe Cauliflower and we finished up with Pavlova and Espresso Creme Brûlée.
Every dish was divine and dessert was a heavenly crescendo to a perfect dining experience.
N.
Was looked after by the lovely Esha amazing service! the food and wine tasted incredible will definitely be going back
D.
Outstanding! Second time dinning here.
Service was amazing thank’s to Liz who is a top waitress. She contributed to a great evening with her brilliant attitude and fun personality to match the great music and atmosphere! Sorry almost forgot to mention the food! Such a fun nite actually forgot to catch a snap of the steak before eating it. Hey it was the best! The four of us loved every dish!
Thank you to great staff, especially Liz.
L.
Delicious food! Really good value for money. We left here absolutely stuffed. One of the wait staff was a little rude which is my only complaint. Overall it was a great experience!
M.
Food was good. Staff very friendly. Expected it to be a bit more quirky or themed with this name - but just a large soft toy giraffe.
A.
Super delish and the servers were fun, pithy and a general delight. I had the Waikenae crab which I'm still dreaming of and the lime tart to finish washed down with a couple of nice glasses of bubbly. I could have stayed there drinking alot longer but I had other engagements that afternoon. I will be going back to try their breakfast menu for sure.
H.
OUTSTANDING food and OUTSTANDING service! Chef Simon Gault has put together a exquisite menu of fresh local New Zealand foods. Chef Gault is there to personally ensure your satisfaction and the entire staff are so friendly and accommodating. Cannot wait visit the Giraffe again and will definitely be back to Auckland and visit again in the near future. Thank you Chef Gault and our fantastic server, Meredith!
A.
Great place for brunch.
Super-friendly staff... really brightened up our morning, after waiting for about 10 minutes at another cafe, across the marina - to be told they had no space.
Food was delicious and fast.
Update.
Had dinner for the first time. Little bit underwhelming tbh. Son & friend ordered '1kg lamb shoulder' to share. For $78. It was one small bone; we estimate < 300g. Quite a blunt knife, hard to share and not that much on it. Definitely not for 2 boys (he could've eaten 3 of them himself)
I had confit duck, which was so rare I spent the evening chewing it. afaik 'Confit' means slow cooked, not hardly cooked.
Other meals were fine, and staff were great; friendly and helpful as usual. Atmosphere is always lovely.
A.
Giraffe, by chef Simon Gault, is good. Good, you'll notice, is not *great*. It's very good - and a lot healthier than most of the other restaurants here on the waterfront. Lots of fresh seafood, lots of sustainability, lots to like.
But...
When you're paying this much, isn't it MEANT to be a treat? Shouldn't the food be a little decadent? Shouldn't the serves be a little larger? Shouldn't the flavours be a little more in your face? You're paying for a location, at treat prices. There are better locations, and better treats, no further than a short walk away.
K.
The food was exceptional, and the service was excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience.
O.
Just wanted to make a special shout out to James our waiter from last night.
Great Service, had a very enjoyable evening he was attentive and friendly.Thank you James!
M.
Exceptional service - one of the best experiences I've had in a long time. Very knowledgable and attentive staff. Young Aussie guy from NSW who makes his own jewellery was brilliant - top class service and food!
F.
Went for breakfast, drinks were great and came out quick. Service was average. Food comes out in good time. I would recommend the eggs Benedict, great value for money. Avoid the fruit bowl, unripe pineapple in winter.
A.
Really great restaurant! Service was quick and friendly and the food was great
H.
Wandered in here on a damp Sunday to a randomly wonderful breakfast. The food was sublime and the wait staff were the best. Do not miss this one if you are in Auck! Seriously good coffee too.
A.
Great all day place on Viaduct. Reasonably busy so I would suggest making a booking if you want a table with a better view.
Great interior fit out and well trained staff. Coffee was strong and hot. Food was tasty and satisfying. Photos of the process. Overall a very pleasant experience.
A.
Giraffe was an amazing experience from the moment you walk down the stairs. Customer service was exceptional and the atmosphere was relaxing yet vibrant. Would definitely recommend!
G.
This place is unique for me. The staff make you feel at home. One of the best coffee in town and if you have a bit more time the food is simply great. I suggest to try their Eggs Benedict for breakfast and lamb if you are a bit more hungry. They are always open and this is also a very important point if you visiting Auckland in a public holiday day...
C.
Absolutely delicious breakfast! The staff are so accommodating and delivered incredible service. Definitely recommended.
C.
Simply put, Stunning 😍
H.
A lovely lady Jen served us and we had an excellent evening. Though it was expensive.
H.
Amazing service and food. I was in a rustproof the ferry and they got my food ready on a flash, very impressed!
S.
Only popped in for desert and wow, amazing. We got the tiramisu, butterscotch pudding and pudding to share. All were amazing but the butterscotch pudding was incredible. Definitely a great spot in the viaduct if you are just looking for desert!
C.
I had breakfast at this restaurant and it was great. I ordered the Green Eggs and Ham, mostly because how could you not, and it was presented and tasted amazing. It was a little pricey but worth it in the end
S.
Amazing food and service. Every single bite was delicious. Worth the cost
C.
1st time at Giraffe, great meal and excellent service.
Prices are reasonable and we really enjoyed everything about our time at Giraffe so thanks so much.
T.
Food was good but unfortunately the young waitress stuffed our order up giving it to the wrong couple whose order was half the same, so by the time my partner got his meal I'd finished - pretty slack really
B.
Excellent - food was amazing. Definitely recommend the lamb shank and beef rib but all meals were fabulous. Great staff who live and breath customer service excellence. Karl Spencer - you are a star! And say hello to Joey the giraffe 🦒
O.
Giraffe is a perfect place to go for breakfast, lunch or dinner!
Tasty food with a wide range of wine, many of my friends struggled do not to lick plates after, always getting some extra bread! :-)
Also, such a convenient and beautiful location to walk after!
Y.
Service was outstanding 👌 Food was on point & could not fault. Took 38 mins for food to arrive however it was absolutely worth the wait. We got the lamb shoulder with, truffle mash & Spinach, absolutely recommend 💯
J.
Food was amazing. Best on the viaduct. Perfect for sharing, highly recommend their steak.
T.
Simple breakfast/lunch menu but the quality, layout and preperation was exceptional in my opinion.
Little bit pricey although you get what you pay for. I ordered The Giraffe Breakfast and was impressed, my main takeaway from the meal was it was proportionate! Not too much and not too little. I highly recommend giving them a try.
J.
Very nice food, salmon portion is a bit small though.
A.
Service great food fantastic looking forward to breakfast
G.
A cool Auckland water front eatery with a great menu and food with huge flavours
S.
Great coffee, great staff, great food.
A.
Best pasta meal I've eaten and it came out scorching hot. A great food experience.
(Creme brulee pictured)
Y.
Came here hoping for different breakfast options and a nice setting. Wasn’t wowed by the food at all for an upmarket restaurant. Could have got the usual eggs Benedict , big breakfast, pancakes somewhere else. Might also want to up your coffee game, again very average. The upside is service and view is 👌
J.
The food was absolutely delicious! Can't wait to go there again and try something else.
G.
Outstanding food and friendly, efficient service. Its hard to stand out amongst the many restaurants nearby but Giraffe managed to even when very busy following a Prada Cup race. Highly recommended.
F.
Such an awesome Restaraunt. Only one we've been to three times in
Auckland!!
b.
I go to Giraffe several times per week, usually for breakfast and occasionally for lunch, or just coffees. The position, ambience, service, and food, are outstanding. The cuisine is utterly delicious, and one of the things I most like about Giraffe is that the menu is not "the typical" - instead, imagination and creativity have been used. This sets it apart from most other venues. The presentation of the food is also at a very, very high level. Finally, the owners are the most lovely people, you will feel treated like family by them, and the staff back them up by providing excellent service. A top place.
A.
We went here after walking out of another venue due to lack of service.
Mate the food was bloody delicious and the service was friendly attentive and by no means intrusive.
Walked out full to the brim because we went to eat and we did.
My favourite was the duck 3 ways and the freshly cooked bread a starter no wait I think it was the mushroom far out or was it the lamb shank ravioli.
See the food is that good.
C.
Nice enough place, well situated off the water with lovely staff and good service. Perhaps our fault we tried breakfast as value for money didn’t seem there. Not a single vegan option on the menu is disappointing in the current environment. Somehow even bacon was added to the mushroom dish though I’m sure that wasn’t on the menu. Ham left off another dish had nothing offered as a replacement (of course the price wasn’t changed either). Next time maybe would be safer to go for the cocktails - just not at 8am...
B.
Sinani is an execellent host, he makes this place more than awesome!!!
L.
Food is yummy, I love this restaurant
G.
Another stunning breakfast. Thanks team.
S.
Great fast service, great food and good vibe.
C.
Amazing food! Went twice on our short stay in Auckland!
S.
Service was impeccable, culinary excellence, perfect ambiance, great job Spencer..... why would you go anywhere else at the viaduct
A.
We just dropped in for a quick hot chocolate, but were impressed with the friendly staff and general quirky ambience of the place.
H.
Best steak we had in Auckland. Waited almost two hours for our table WITH reservation. The head waiter is a blast and make the long wait less of a bore. They provided drinks and great aperitifs during our wait. Every person in my party was very pleased with the food.
J.
This was by far the best meal I’ve had in a while and for a very reasonable price! The mussels were out of this world and although they may seem small they are rich and delicious! Followed by the ravioli (even though this is also a starter) and I had room for dessert. Do not hesitate to come here if you like great food and not to mention fab service
J.
Fantastic and refreshing. Service was immaculate too. Was served by a woman from Nepal who made the experience all the more special. Would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone living here or visiting. I had the pie and the traditional dessert. Plus, New Zealand has made Chardonnay grow on me.
S.
Generous portions of quality food and an interesting selection of wines
K.
The food was good, some dishes better than the others. Way beef with crispy onions and the risotto were great, the roast pork was very well cooked but not to die for. Seared tuna was good but bland. The wines were great - at least the ones we chose. The service however was very average.
P.
First visit with a taste of Auckland tour where we sampled tasty appetizers and met Giraffe’s founding Chef. Returned for cocktails and a full meal. Service fun, knowledgeable and not intrusive—just superb. Seafood here a very good choice. However, don’t overlook the big red meat. The kitchen definitely knows what is doing no matter what the season. Pick a seat at the bar and watch.
H.
Went here for brunch with friends. The meal was amazing and the service was pretty awesome too. The restaurant is.pretty cool and laid out really well. There were only two things I didn't like. I had a cup of coffee that was so bitter I couldn't drink it. The other issue was the tables against the wall were so close together that to slide in between the you nearly sat on the next table. I'd go again but would ask for a different table.
M.
Had the degustation sitting at the bar watching the chefs and ready of the staff. It was absolutely fantastic!!! The food was amazing, the staff so friendly and hospitable ... And the whole experience of watching the chefs prepare the courses so interesting and entertaining. They are simply wonderful staff working there - congratulations to the team!
B.
Exquisite food and great service. I would highly recommend eating here.
M.
Sensational food, service from Adrian was perfect, his recommendations were spot on. Value for money was good. A well drilled crew from Spencer and his team. A must do restaurant for locals and visitors alike to our great city
C.
We are in Auckland for a short trip. We were so impressed with brunch yesterday we returned for breakfast today.
I believe this could be the best run restaurant I have ever been to. The food is beautiful, well cooked, well presented, and so tasty.
The turn around time for your food is impressive.
The staff work like a well oiled machine, yet are friendly and have the right level of interaction, without pressuring you to hurry.
Tables are cleared efficiently.
Well done. The only problem is that it's in Auckland and we rarely come here. You have spoiled other restaurants for us.
B.
Described as funky global menu. Arrived with my family and it was much more upper scale than I anticipated based on google description. It was fine dining. Price points felt very high for the portions given. My husband and I had salads for $28 and were promptly hungry two hours later. Service was decent.
T.
What made Giraffe a really pleasant evening was the genuine attentive service by each staff member we interacted with throughout the evening. We started by just having a drink at the bar before our reservation. The host and server in this area were happy to oblige our needs quickly and effortlessly. Once we sat for dinner, our server spent a good amount of time giving us some highlights on th menu and explaining size of portions for each category. It was clear without being pushy and allowed us to navigate the menu. We decided to order something from each smaller category and share a bit, which in regards to amount, worked out well for 2 guests. We had the cured salmon plate, pork nose to tail, flounder, and green bean sides. Each item was tasty and had some interesting elements.
I would return to Giraffe because I felt we were really well tended to as guests and the meal was very enjoyable. I would say this restaurant is good value and a welcoming spot for a meal or drink. To make it a 5, I would have needed to be really wowed by the food and have a place seating that felt a bit more intimate and removed from the couple beside us.
D.
Was nice but nothing to write home about. I struggle to find something on the menu as I don't eat seafood. I chose a lamb pie from the mains menu. It was a good size portion but I guess for $42 it should be. Strangely it was brought out on a serving trolley but the waiter stood with his back to us while he served so we couldn't see a thing. He was so close to.the table he may as well.have sat on it. Very strange. My friends had smaller portions of food and shared a variety. They enjoyed it but nothing special to write home about. The setting was nice and relaxing. If you do go book a first table at least you get a discounted price.
D.
We last ate at Giraffe 18 months ago and enjoyed our meal. On returning today we ordered two of the dishes we had last time and three others and fries. The two dishes from last time still good, the other new dishes not so good. One a pigs tail and pork cheek was bland, greasy and fatty a real same. Sorry guys but for $190, and we only had one glass of wine. I felt I had not had good value for money.
S.
Not sure what we were expecting, but were hoping for an exciting menu. Somewhat disappointed actually. Not anything particularly spectacular. Service was ok, was never asked if we wanted another drink and the table next to us was vacated but took ages to clear away. Did love the prosciutto and melon strips, but the burrata was not particularly soft and was served too cold. Steak was delectable, as was the pecan Kumara! We were just expecting something more out of the box 😕
S.
We were seated behind the giraffe’s bum, obscuring the waterfront view, despite a booking.
The steak was nothing better than I could have cooked at home - but the waitress did note the usual steak cooking chef was away.
One meal had a piece of metal from a pot scourer in it. This was apologised for and desserts comp’d.
Overall not bad. Don’t think I’ll return with people to impress though.
s.
Great service and delicious food.
K.
Cocktails were great, food was prepared beautifully. One of the best tiramisus and chocolate fondant desserts around! But please correct your menu regarding the “duck confit.” You can’t do a bait and switch by serving roast duck breast in its stead. I called in advance to confirm they were serving duck confit, Yes said Marc. Once there I asked the waitress to confirm the main duck dish was specifically a “duck leg confit.” Yes. Um—NO. I could get roasted duck anywhere; confit of duck is the labor intensive (takes time) dish. Correct your menu please, it was a very frustrating experience.
K.
Great great food great service
Good locstion
W.
We have been 4 or 5 times over the past year and really enjoy this atmosphere and food here the bacon is a amazing and the black pudding is out of this world ( this coming from someone who is not a black pudding fan)
Also a big thumbs up for the coffee
I do have one small critique and that is that they use generic store brought hash browns instead of making their own hash cakes this a disappointing.
The front of house are really friendly and professional and when we had an issue with something being over cooked she rectified this quickly and professionally.
R.
We dinned out at Giraffe last night, we were welcomed enthusiastically as we came through the door by the young lady behind the bar and then attended to by two waiters and taken to our table. The food was exceptional (great steaks) and our waiter looked after us through out the evening. As we left the same young lady fare welled from behind the bar and wished us well. Totally recommend Giraffe to anyone.
P.
Lovely ambience and great waitresses. It was a shame I saw the chef wipe his forehead with a tea towel and then proceed to wipe the bench. Also a wee suggestion how about some strawberries or blueberries on the French Toast. Looked very bland with one piece of bacon and bread.
J.
The food was beautiful. The waiter was great. However the restaurant at lunchtime on a Friday wasn't busy and we waited forever for our food and drinks. They even forgot one meal completely. Sad for such an otherwise lovely restaurant. Won't go back until they fix the service.
J.
Had a family lunch at Giraffe today for a birthday. Service was great and the food was amazing. I thought I was being boring going for the chicken but there was nothing boring about it all - so many discreet flavours that left me feeling like I had just eaten something really special. Everything else we had was the same - so much flavour in one dish. Recommend the rabbit risotto (although this was the special today) The overall atmosphere very relaxed and we had a great time.
T.
Lovely waitress and good wine selection. However we felt it did not live up to the hype! Proteins were cooked well and nice flavors but the chocolate pudding was not amazing at all.

A fine dining experience in a less formal, relaxed environment is the best way I could describe this restaurant, which is in the heart of the Viaduct buzz. Service is exceptional from the moment you walk through the door. You will be talked through a very interesting menu before being given time to make some hard choices; everything on the menu looks sounds delicious and worth trying. Both the small & larger plates are easy to share which is great when you want to try as many dishes as possible. Food was excellent and complimented with a good selection of wines and craft beers. Make sure you leave room for dessert. Sublime!!
B.
Very good breakfast food. Friendly staff. Good views into the harbor.
D.
Wow. Visiting from Oz and popped in for coffee and toast. Delish. We came back for dinner the same night and totally enjoyed it - enough to book for the following night - Valentine's Day!
Valentine's Day dinner was excellent. Well priced fixed menu with two seatings but super well organised. Good portions and lovely food, better than what we chose from the menu the night before.
And the staff. Amazing. Next time in AKL we'll be back for sure.
W.
I took my wife here for her birthday on Friday night, the service was very good and very pleasant staff, entrees of Whitebait and Bluff oysters were superb, my main of Waikanui 300g Scotch fillet was very disappointing, gristly, chewy and very fatty, my wife had the Petite eye fillet that she said was perfect, winter veges of beetroot a bit basic. Great selection of wines
B.
The food was good, tentative front of house staff for service, however very disappointed a waitress ran up to us as we had left and accused us for not paying for the meal, this left us with a slightly sour visit hence the 3 Stars. Let's get your processes sorted please.
J.
Fantastic food, friendly service, lovely vibe. We had a great brunch, everyone (all 7 of us!) enjoyed our meals. Thank you Giraffe we will be back next time we swing through Auckland 👌😘
T.
Nice place to dine in. Good food and people
D.
Super good service and amazing food :)
N.
We were really hoping this place would live up to the hype but unfortunately, for us at least, it did not. The staff were top notch, we had some good pre-dinner cocktails and the waiter recommended an excellent wine. However the food itself was mostly disappointing. For entree my wife had oysters, which she liked, I had the Pork Tails which sounded good but in practice were just flavoured bits of fat and gristle to be stuffed into lettuce leaves. My wife had the crab main, which we both really liked, I had rabbit and pork ravioli which was OK but a bit bland. Dessert was the biggest let down, we had the "truffles" which were chewy and sickly sweet, quite unpleasant, and the brulee, which tasted mainly of egg and was otherwise fairly insipid. Perhaps with a different choice of dishes this would have been a more satisfactory evening but for a restaurant of this calibre we expected better.
f.
My husband and I went for dinner last Sunday evening food was amazing. Mussels a must have to start, chicken for mains really good, and the service very good, we look forward to coming back again next time we are in Auckland. Thank you for a lovely evening.
N.
Our set meal was absolutely stunning and delicious. Breads and dips followed by salmon salad with mandaring and mozerall and tomatoesl Generous portions of turket and ham, salad and duck fat potatoes served efficiently but not rushed - perfectly timed. The most beautiful deserts of Christmas Pudding and pavlova. We enjoyed a lovely Nautilus Estate Sauvignon Blanch and two sticky Muscats to round off the meal.
S.
Had a beautiful breakfast this morning. Eggs Benedict on kumera outstanding. Pancakes perfect. Smoothie a sure winner.
Will be back when next in Auckland.
J.
We ate at Giraffe on Saturday night, it was fantastic. Tasty food and good volume (something that is not normally the case with some of their contemporaries!). Lovely fitout. Pity we were too full for desert!
S.
Nice food, nice décor, but overall disappointing experience. We called and were recommended to come at 9am to avoid a wait. We came at 9, but the breakfast took 45 minutes from ordering to receiving! Our two plates came at different times. Coffee was great though.
F.
The lamb was awesome. They had their own farm in the South Island, and it shows. It's so tender, and so tasty. The outside is all caramelized and crispy too which you don't see much on roasted lamb.
The smoked kahawai butter is good, smokey and so smooth.
Sadly, it was let down by other not so great things. The salad accompanying the lamb was just average. The beef tendon crackers were not deep fried well and was oily and not crispy.
Nice location on the harbour front, waitress was quite funny, a lot of people and noisy.
R.
WOW!! What a great find!. Absolutely everything about Giraffe gets my tick of approval. We went for breakfast. I recommend the eggs Benny with salmon. The service, decor, location, food and coffee were 5 star. Thank you Giraffe, for making our visit memorable.
M.
Very tasty meal. Great outlook to the marina. Friendly service. The only negative was the rather loud Mexican music coming from next door.
A.
Had a stunning lunch at Giraffe today . Due to the portion sizes being a little smaller, the well informed waitress said this allows you to try more dishes .
You won't be disappointed. The kahawhi butter, melon salad, crab, lamb shoulder, creamed spinach were all amazing.
Sadly there was room for desert.
The attention to detail is top notch. Lovely serving dishes, special glasses for our gin and tonic with juniper berries and rosemary.
An experience in itself.
Don't hesitate.
L.
Great food although the portion sizes were a bit schizophrenic. Eg. I ordered gnocchi & got about 10 pieces, whereas my partner ordered the chicken & got half a chicken on a huge pile of mash. Service from our waitress Nicole was knowledgeable & friendly - give that girl a payrise!
The only downside was the tense meeting conducted in the bar area by Simon Gault & 2 staff members. This was inappropriate in a public area & we felt quite awkward.
H.
Awesome brunch and menu selection to choose from. Personable service. Great vibe
B.
Amazing food, presentation and service.
T.
Celebrated our 26th wedding anniversary with them. From the moment we walked in until the moment we left the service, the food and the overall experience was exceptional. Highly recommend
M.
If I’m in Auckland I do breakfast here.
Start the day by the water with friendly staff, good service, scrumptious food washed down with not so bad coffee, easy.
S.
Took my mother to Giraffe for lunch and had a superb time. Simon is an amazing chef! Hospitality was fantastic too. There is also beautiful gifts for ladies when they book for ladies luncheon!
N.
An excellent establishment by legendary kiwi chef Simon Gault. Very modern interior and a unique approach to service. Food was exquisite also. Keep in mind that it tends to get rather noisy in the evenings as the bars around fill up.
J.
Went for the second time on my birthday, and I have raised my rating to 5 stars.
I think there have been some teething issues, but they were completely on top of their game this time round.
And it may help to order these dishes!
The mussels, simply outstanding, ask for extra bread..
Crab, a signature dish for Simon..
Suckling pig, a confit of pig, enough for 4 +, so so tender, amazing!
And order the passionfruit souffle as you order the main...
A.
Came here for a birthday celebration and was not disappointed. Really good waiter service: friendly with a bit of banter without being overbearing. All our meals were fabulous. Thanks Giraffe!
P.
We had a fantastic dinner at Giraffe with guest chef Amanda Cohen from NYC's Dirt Candy. With Simon Gault hosting and bouncing around offering a taste of a reconstituted olive (try it..amazing) a packed restaurant had a great night out. Standout dishes..Portobello mousse, broccoli with sesame seeds and the popcorn cream pudding. Outstanding service and wine match. More please
C.
Lovely food. The sirloin on a hazelnut and mushroom puree was something special. It needs to be added to the menu full time!
The suckling pig was extremely tender and juicy with crisp crackling. Had to wait an hour for it (would hsve been nive to have been warned) but it was worth it.
Two of our party have immediately rebooked for two weeks time!
K.
The food was good but I was disappointed with the service. Waited ages for our first drinks. We ordered a bottle of wine and nearly finished our dinner without it and had to ask again for it. The restaurant wasn't busy so no good excuse for the delay.
M.
Great food. Pity about the wait staff !!. So busy fawning over another guest( flashy woman) that we waited forever at the front desk to just collect my coat and scarf stored in their coat cupboard. We had left cash with the bill on our table. I eventually got so fed up with being ignored that I went and helped myself to my coat from the cupboard and not one single member of the staff came to help or check that I was in fact taking my own coat not helping myself to someone elses'. Waiter did not know his wines either. Was asked for a recommendation based on my likes and was so far off base it was disappointing . Recommended a thin watery Chardonnay when was asked to recommend an oaky, buttery option . I chose the second round myself and was far more on point .
T.
Great breakfast, a bit expensive but nice!
M.
Just stopped for Sunday morning coffees. Good location and fairly spacious. Friendly service, but not very fast. Food looked good.
A.
Great service. We spilt a glass of wine with only a wee bit left. They replaced it with a fresh glass. Good for great. Staff have a great attitude. Enjoyed our lunch.
J.
We sharef a late lunch for my wifes birthday. The food was memorable the service attentive and outstanding. Little extra touches to make things special for wife was wonderful.
R.
Nice food, great atmosphere and friendly staff. Had an issue with a dish not being served as the waiter forgot to add it to the order but the front of house lessened the bill to apologise. I did have a fish dish but they didn't have mints? Strange.
R.
Another fantastic evening at Giraffe. Beautiful food, wonderful service overall a great experience. With so much choice in Auckland I have to say that Giraffe tick all the boxes. Well done team, we will be back again!!
B.
great food and service and of course location. Owner Metin ,has been maintaining quality consistently high for long time, great job. Keep it up.
H.
What a lovely place to have an evening out. Great food and absolutely wonderful staff. Thanks so much for making our night special, it's been such fun. Can't wait to come back.
M.
We went to Giraffe for a family birthday. Couldn't have been made more welcome, staff were friendly and very efficient.....if something wasn't quite right like cold wine, they made an effort to put things right. Simon came over a couple of times to chat and check everything was perfect....how often does the owner talk to the guests....can't remember the last time in Auckland.
Well worth getting a reservation and will be back for sure asap
D.
Food was wonderful. Service was great. only downside was it was quite loud .
Y.
We had a fabulous experience. Lovely ambience. Great food. The flavours were to die for. Really enjoyed the evening. Recommend sharing the chicken and the lamb between 4.
P.
Food was great albeit a little slow to the table. It was a business lunch and a couple of our party missed meetings due to the length of time.
a.
Nice atmosphere Breakfast was very nice however is quite expensive
C.
Fantastic menu, great service, good value for money and the view of the Viaduct was a bonus too.
L.
Over the view but felt rushed to order by one of the waitress. Didn't like my coffee either but nice atmosphere and good view of viaduct.
K.
Fantastic dinner
Food was outstanding
Every dish was yummy
Staff were very friendly but Henry was outstanding and made us feel very special.
He clearly loves what he does
Thank you Henry
K.
Superb breakfast location in the viaduct. I had the blueberry pancakes. They were simply incredible. An absolute must try. Fantastic staff, very friendly and attentive.
M.
Exceptional food, great coffee and very professional staff a must visit, we went on a miserable rainy day and came out feeling sunny ☀️
G.
Steak not done as requested. New steak cooked but do thin it looked like schnitzel. Not impressed
C.
One of the best breakfasts I've had...
S.
We went in search of coffee and ended up at Giraffe twice. Wonderfully great coffee (jacks coffee is the brand). If dont go to eat its worth it for the coffee alone.
Will be there again next time in auckland.
K.
Great service. Good food. Nice place for a cost meal 👍😊
K.
Excellent date night out - Lamb rack with eggplant for dinner, dessert was also delicious. Great service!
T.
Just fantastic food. Service is great. This restaurant goes out of it's way to give you the complete dining experience.
S.
Incredible place at the viaduct. Opened till late. SG Crab & Prawn is a muuuuuust! The Date Sticky Pudding has no rival. Ask for Henry Osborne, he has the best advise, outstandig service and he's a great guy.
M.
Staying in the Sebel upstairs and popped down for dinner. Great service. Attentive and knew the menu. I sat at the counter and rhe owner and chef had a chat. I will go back when on business in Auckland.
C.
A beautiful locale serving lovely food and drinks. Service is attentive but not intrusive. Well done!
C.
Breakfast fresh fruit and yogurt... chopped apple, pears kiwi, orange, pineapple, and tart strawberries. Disappointing, when there are blackberries, raspberries, blueberries available.
E.
Very full waited at least 25 min to get in here. The food however was great. The wait not... Maybe one can book I dont know. They cleaned...and Cleared the tables very slowly
J.
Great food, lovely laidback ambience. Creative menu and I wish we could have tried something of each. Food was presented beautfully. Absolutley delicious and divine.
W.
Food was delish and staff were wonderfully attentive and friendly. We've already picked out what we'll order when we go back. :-)
T.
Friendly staff, good food
M.
Omg this newly opened restaurant is amazing. #newzealand produce magically created to enhance your tastebuds. flavours out of this world. Small plates to share . Cosy and classy with top #nz chef #SimonGault at his finest. It's a Yes From me 😀
Michelle S
D.
Great fit out and cocktails
b.
Fantastic service. We had a large group positioned in a n awkward spot of the restaurant and the waiter was attentive, professional and knowledgeable. Great for corporate lunches
M.
On our much anticipated first visit to the new wow restaurant on the viaduct 'Giraffe" we experienced fabulous food, a sublime ambience and superlative service. It was really all about the food but we were about to surrender to the fact that we could eat no more when our humorous & super efficient waiter Chris seduced us using his innate culinary knowledge to sample the most Scrumptious desserts we have ever eaten in our life's. 4 happy ladies.
s.
Fantastic as always. If you are going there for a celebration get the Chef to make you a Moon cake. Thanks ladies for the wonderful service yesterday.
Shirley Mackay
A.
Worth every cent. Bloody good service, beautiful food. Came here for Restaurant Month 2020.
K.
Unfortunately not the best experience with their special steak and chips for $28...but I guess that's what you need to pay for a celebrity run restaurant. The steak was thin, like a ham steak and only a few fries.
D.
Great food, great place very nice staff.
M.
In a word, amazing! From the food to the staff, Chefs and Simon himself offer an experience that is second to none. Special mention to Adrian, who provided the service you hope for, thank you.
C.
Really fantastic restaurant in the corner of the viaduct harbor. DO NOT MISS the chef's table, unbelievably reasonable pricing for absolutely spectacular service and food.
M.
Giraffe is pretty good man - we booked through First Table and received half-price food, but even at full price it was good. But use First Table! Firsttable.co.nz
V.
Simon Gault scores. A bit pricey but not bad VFM, given location and celebrity chef brand name. Amazing service!
Loved the themes posted inside.
D.
Amazing food and service. Had the Lamb. Highly recommended.
G.
Great service and great food. We had a fantastic breakfast at Giraffe. I will go again when in Auckland next time.
A.
Food was good nice staff slow service however
D.
I was well impressed with Giraffe. Great service, great selection of drinks and top quality food. The place is decorated very well and has a great vibe.
G.
Great place, good food especially the suckling pig
o.
Great food and wine. Snazzy new look and feel. Neat to have the confidence to have a fully open kitchen. Really enjoyed the night.
B.
Fantastic restaurant in an excellent location in viaduct basin in central Auckland, 5 meters from the ocean. Lovely food and drinks and first class service.
A.
Cold. I was put near the door which was letting cold rain in. The place was semi empty. I moved myself in closer near a heater. Food was yummy. Lovely breakfast.
B.
The food and service is exceptional. Pricey but well worth the money.
First place I have left a tip in years.
M.
Nice vibrant place. Good friendly service..love the open kitchen..
m.
The best experience ever ! Thanks for the great food, and your service made me feel like royal customer. Will see you again.
S.
Beautiful food - pity that we were overcharged for the drinks...this was pointed out by email the next day and an apology and offer of refund forthcoming... Quite pricey but excellent service and ambience..
G.
Really good food and service. Excellent location. Would go back anytime.
R.
The staff were amazing...service was outstanding...however the food was disappointing....had shell bits in mussels...the crab dish for the price was very lacking ..best part the potatoes gratin...wouldnt re visit
R.
A bit underwhelming. Presentation was good, service was a bit odd, but the disappointing bit was the flavours - they were ok but not unique. It just didn't justify the hype.
L.
Great food and service. Only negative thing I can say is eating an Eggs Benedict out of a bowl does not work. It may be pretty but absolutely impractical.
D.
Amazing nook on the waterfront. I've been a few times, and most recently the service has surpassed expectations. Great head service. Ill be coming back alot more.
M.
Brilliant food, a little slow on seeing if you wanted any drinks otherwise it would have been 5 stars.
R.
Early morning breakfast of Spanish eggs. Very good service and wonderful fern carving on the tables.
K.
Amazing service, down to earth but made it special. It’s a fine line! Food was great, as to be expected!
J.
Very slow service but great ambience. 5 star dining without the need to dress up. One of my fave places in AKL for dining out.
J.

Very upmarket restaurant by Masterchef Simon goult, good for people who love see food , vegetarian people don’t have much options, always busy as location at Viaduct’s harbour
