Reviews of Pasture Restaurant
H.
A beautiful meal at Pasture. The menu is innovative and unique - many dishes challenge the thinking on flavour combinations, but were delicious and truely an experience to consume. The wine pairings all matched the dishes well and were generously poured. The service was attentive without being overbearing and the ambience was great. Looking forward to returning some day.

We had the fish sandwich and the salmon on rye. We really enjoyed the balanced and comforting flavors. There were also some tempting donuts (smoked raspberry, sorrel cream options), pastries and bread to buy on the spot.
J.
The restaurant is perfect and well reviewed though it’s worth highlighting that the lowish 4.4 score for a restaurant of this quality is purely due to a backlash after they included live lobster in a Covid food kit once.
Right or wrong the restaurant deserves a 4.9 rating for its food and service
However, the reason for this review is I just visited their day time shopfront ‘Alpha’ and it is just as stunning. The sourdough loaves are the best in Auckland (and as a European I have searched everywhere for the good stuff) the wood fired smoked salmon is beyond description. On impulse I grabbed a jam doughnut for my boys and the jam is also smoked and the doughnut is light and fluffy ) this place is on a different level

We were gobsmacked from start to finish - what an incredible experience!
I can't thank Ed and his team of wizards enough for taking us on this unforgettable journey. The attention to detail in every aspect of the dining experience was simply flawless.
From the cool and intimate setting, the kind and caring staff who have an undeniable passion for their craft, to the food which challenges, surprises and delights with every mouthful, perfectly highlighted by the masterfully curated paired drinks.
Pasture is high art that celebrates food in a way that only the very best chefs know how to.
Y.
Decided to come here because it was my last chance before I left Auckland. They were very supporting of my last minute booking, considered I booked only 8 hours before service.
First impressions were excellent, decor was very cost, introduction was great. The chef made the ambience very friendly.
For me, considering it's my first experience in these kind of high number of courses with drinks matching, it wasn't to my expectations.
I had heard high reviews from colleagues about this place, but out of the 14 courses I had, I like only 5-6 of them. That said, considering it was my first experience, it could be that I just wasn't used to the unique flavours that the chef wanted to present.
The high rating was for everything else. I'm not that picky about my food, I just about eat everything that's not green. I did surprisingly like the greens that were served in most courses.
Overall, would recommend to others to dine in Pasture.
A.
Great night! Fantastic menu of veggies & seafood. Yummy wine! Staff & chef interactions made the whole experience truly special.
Thank you!!
G.
Unbelievable, Ed and the team always take it to the next level. Pictures really don't do the amazing quality, attention to detail or sheer gumption of the team. The food is excellent, the drinks match are excellent. I haven't been so satisfied by a meal as I am when I come here. I can't wait to come back for .y third time.

With one set menu designed for the season and talented chefs using various techniques such as cooking with wood-fire, fermentation, dry-aging and cheese making, your meal at Pasture is one of its kind. The restaurant only seat 6 and takes two seating times at 5:45PM and 8:15PM. Instead of seating at secluded tables hidden in the dining room, you’re in the middle of it all at the Chef’s Counter where you can directly engage with the kitchen.
Booking a table pre-COVID has always been a hard task with the weekends being taken up as soon as bookings become available. We managed to get a table as soon as they started taking reservations under level one - Understandable as this award winning restaurant is well praised in the dining community (3 Hats in Cuisine, 2019 Metro Restaurant of the Year, Best Chef & Fine Dining Restaurant)
My meal at Pasture last Sunday was exceptional. We paired our meal with a non-alcoholic pairing and was thrilled at the creative choices of matches of beverage to dish. Each dish is surprising and innovative, creative with attention to detail. Watching the chefs elegantly assemble and prepare your meal right in front of you is a real treat.
If you have any dietary requirements, this might not be suitable for you. I haven’t eaten a banana in 20 years and have managed to avoid red meat for the last 6 months. This changed last night and I have no regrets. The set menu also sets you back $250 and the non-alcoholic pairing is another $70 per person. It’s not a cheap meal.
Do I love and recommend it? Yes!
Would I be back next season when the menu change? When my wallet recovers
H.
What a special place! 21 courses of pure art. The menu starts with many summery vegetables and surprises you with how something simple like a tomato or pea shoots can taste better than anything you've ever had before. From there, lots of seafood like john dory with "vanilla seawater" and paua "nigiri". We loved the oyster dish with gooseberry sauce and the snapper with extra crispy skin the most but it's impossible to pick favorites. I wouldn't change a thing. It's definitely pricy but we felt like it was completely worth it considering the luxurious ingredients (caviar, truffles, crayfish, wagyu) and intimate experience with as many chefs cooking as their are guests (only 6) it's absolutely worth it. It's worth noting that I don't think it would be the ideal place to catch up with friends as it's more about watching and interacting with the chefs because they do everything in front of you.
Hot Tip: they also have a bakery in the front. I live in the neighborhood and would recommend that as well as they have THE BEST sourdough and danish style rye bread.
D.
A very different dining experience but amazing. Exquisite ingredients prepared and served in ways you would never image. Wine matching was excellent. Staff were amazing. On the pricey side for dining but definitely worth every cent.
A.
Oh, my.
The most exquisitely personally curated meal I've had in NZ. The service and attention to detail throughout is extraordinary, and it's clearly based on the tastes and interests of a singular mind who is exploring ideas that they like. GET THE DRINKS MATCH - the meal is only half complete without the matching beverages.
Best dishes: The Pig Crumpet (cooked in pork fat, topped with pig liver pate and house pancetta), the sourdough with the blue-cheesy 13 month aged butter, the house made chilli liqueur that tastes like distilled capsicum.
Lots of interesting drinks - raw and fermenting wines are a favourite - lots of sour and simple flavours. Less salt than I might prefer, less greenery than I might prefer (but it is winter), less acid than I might prefer - but these are MY preference; that's not what we're here to have. We're here for personable chef Ed Verner's preferences, and they are EXCELLENT. Thanks for sharing them with us, Ed!
G.
Nice and exciting restaurant in Auckland. Updates their menu every season.
Great food quality and warm atmosphere. Happy to go again.
J.
Really excellent, thoughtful meal. Clever mix of fresh and unusual flavours. Wonderful grey mullet, superb aged wagyu. All prepared by Ed and team while you watch. Restaurant only seats six and is only going to get busier!! Go while you can. This is a fabulous experience. We had 1x wine pairing and 1x non-alcoholic pairing. Clever housemade drinks and combinations really made the night.
I.
Words fail me. 5 stars is not enough. Simply, the single best dining experience of my life. The entire evening was a delight. From the way the food was prepared and plated in front of you; to the extraordinary combination of flavours and textures, combined with fine wines. The staff took great care of us along the journey. I cannot thank them enough for our wonderful evening. Book this, experience this. You will not be disappointed.i would give more stars if I could. 10 out of 5!
A.
Great people and atmosphere, fantastic food, perfect for an intimate dining experience, you can tell the food is prepared by people that care about their craft but make sure you're hungry though or you may start to struggle towards the end
T.
Just phenomenal. High expectations surpassed. Consistent as well though the service. Drink pairing matched so well with the food
A.
Fantastic experience, amazing and very well curated food and dining experience. Drinks pairing was absolutely worth it, should you be considering it. Small intimate dining areas, immaculately prepared dishes and great passion for great food. Not going to pretend it's cheap but definitely worth the experience and fairly priced.
A.
It was amazing food and ed was a great chef with amazing talents and very friendly while cooking we got a little spoiled because it was the last day of season so we got a little more steak but overall amazing restaurant.
L.
Absolutely extraordinary food and drinks throughout the whole dinner. Ambiance is cozy and very welcoming. Drinks are superbly paired to the food and I suspect the music is too. Amazing variety of food, cooked/prepared/presented to perfection. Ate a number of dished with ingredients I didn't even know existed beforehand.
T.
Absolutely amazing. Incredible food which was expected, well better than expected. What really distinguishes it is the feeling of comfort and warmth - I'm just about addicted after one visit.
Also huge shoutout to the drinks, such a diverse range including beer, champagne and out of this world cocktails all matched perfectly with the food.
B.
One of the best dining experiences I have ever had in Auckland. Beautiful presentation of exceptional quality food. As the menu changes almost daily it's not possible to make recommendations but the wagu beef was unbelievably good. Very expensive but totally worth it if you have something special worth celebrating.
B.
Thank you so much, we had the best night! The food was incredible, everything was lovely and light, which meant we could finish the full tasting menu. Wines were fantastic. But the staff were amazing, so friendly and helpful and fun, it was a full experience. The only thing that let it down was the obnoxious, arrogant couple sitting next to us.
R.
Absolutely excellent, what fine dining should be. All the chef's were amazing!
A.
A truly memorable experience unlike any other restaurant. Interesting dishes and superb drink matches. Friendly chefs serving you in a great atmosphere.
S.
Wow. What a night that was. The more you are into food and drink, the more you will enjoy Pasture. Read their web site carefully. Do not come here to catch up with friends. Do not come here if you are a picky eater. Come here to enjoy amazing food paired with drinks. Great to experience with another(s) but would be very enjoyable just by yourself.
M.
The theatre of eating at Pasture seems to be the whole point of the exercise, the staff are super nice and the food is pretty good. If you have limited experience of fine dining then Pasture will be a BIG step up for you. Glad I went and enjoyed the theatre of the place and they played some killer 80s tunes as well
M.
This was great from start to finish, we really enjoyed the dinner experience. Friendly staff and really amazing food and drinks. Definitely unique and we'll be back again.
A.
If you want a real cool eating experience, highly recommend pasture for a night out! Drink pairing is a must, it's actually pairing drinks with the dish rather than a random wine which vaguely matches what you are eating. Super interesting tastes and textures, they cook it right in front of you.
J.
Without a doubt the best dining experience in NZ. Michelin star worthy and will one day get the recognition it deserves. Keep up the incredible quality guys 🙌🏼
S.
Very fortunate to have eaten at Pasture earlier this year! I highly recommend Pasture if your a real foodie, open minded, and capable of trusting the chef and the team with the intentions of the food, the way its prepared, cooked and put together. Its disappointing to read others reviews that have not quite matched mine. I can only think they have gone in to the experience with the expectations that limit the creativity of chefs.
Alot of care and thought and preparation goes into the menu, and the food is treated with a level of care that you know you are in great care.
I really enjoyed my experience the smell of Manuka wood smoke, but to really top off my experience was the Music, excellent playlist I absolutely loved it and can't wait to go back.
Every detail of the experience was thoughtful without spoiling it for others. Just know that your in for a great experience, enjoy it.
A.
Writing a review for Ed and the team at Pasture can never do the dining experience justice. From start to finish, the couple of times i've been lucky enough to dine there have been breathtaking. The expertise, the care, and the consciousness behind each and every dish is a masterpiece. Pasture as a team, has raised the bar in New Zealand in terms of hospitality and dining experiences. If there is one place to go, one place to save up for, I fully recommend Pasture.
R.
How can I describe the amazing night we had at Pasture?? The concept, the care, the love and the inventiveness of Ed and his team at time left me speechless.Having eaten in many starred restaurants my expectations given the price was high, I was concerned I may be disappointed. How wrong was I. From the moment we walked in to the end of our 3.5 hours the experience, the theater as well as an amazing array of foods some of which I have never eaten were truly out of this world. I can not recommend this place enough. This years supreme winner and restaurant of the year 2019 is completely deserved. We will be back
M.
Amazing experience all round. True professionals at work across every area, from food to drinks, service to the surrounds. Really is a place to savour the creations of master crafts people. It's not the place to go to catch up with friends, is the place to go to immerse yourself in the entire experience.
A.
It lived up to its reputation. A foodies place for sure. This place is obviously NOT cheap, but it is clear where your money is going. Whether it is worth it, is really a matter of opinion. The food is undeniably unique and well crafted. Matt is really operating on the edge. Mostly it really worked, sometimes somewhat less so.
We had the non-alcoholic drink pairing, which was refreshing and really added to the experience. Not often non drinkers are catered for in this way.
Overall the place is excellent and worth the money, but we won't be back for a while. Saving up....
J.
I must admit the food was unique and very tasty However the portions were small.. basically a mouthful per course... 8 in total. The wines matched were nice. For 4 people it was very expensive. But overall a nice experience.
T.
Where to start? I booked this restaurant because it spoke to all the things I really care about in cookery (nose to tail and fermentation) with a fine dining spin. I knew we wouldn't have a budget to book more than one, maaaaybe two, restaurants of this caliber/pricepoint during our month long honeymoon, so I was slightly nervous about this decision, but I absolutely didn't need to be as it was everything I'd hoped for and more!
The food and the drinks pairing were exactly as I'd hoped, interesting and surprising. Some dishes were poignantly delicious, while others were challenging but well balanced and intriguing. Actually, I have to thank Ed for sourcing such delicious wines because my first experience with wild fermented wine was quite off-putting, but there were some real beauts here expertly paired, I will be keeping my eye out for producers in my area. I won't give away any details of the menu, but I will say that the experience was full of theatre and small surprises, I was genuinely delighted and may have giggled once or twice... the world would be a better place if all restaurants were more like this.
So that's the food, but the atmosphere was equally magical, and far exceeded my expectations. This is truly and purposefully antithetical to the world of fine dining. It is airy and chill, the vibe is laid back and the music selection reinforces this. If I could describe it I would say that it is like being invited to a very posh and well appointed cabin and eating in the kitchen while your friends cook for you, the centerpiece of which is the wood stove. You would think eating in a kitchen with a wood stove would be stuffy, but it was actually breezy with the most incredible wafts of wood smoke accentuating everything.
In terms of price, I actually believe this is undervalued, but thank you Ed for making such a beautiful experience accessible for someone willing to save a bit. The amount of time that must go into preparing this menu boggles the mind, I don't know how anyone could keep track of all the ferments, nevermind sourcing and pairing ingredients, teaching yourself wood stove cooking, and sourcing/creating the most incredible drinks list. Wow. Genuinely in awe. THANK YOU!
Y.
Took my partner to Pasture for his 40th birthday dinner last week.
It was an unforgettable experience with incredible food and warm welcoming atmosphere. Also the best beef steak I've ever had in my life.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.
B.
By far the best culinary experience you will have in New Zealand. If you love seafood and degustation then Pasture is the place to go.
C.
Pasture is really special. Very unusual, interesting flavours. It was especially special sitting at the chef's table and seeing everything being prepared. I would *strongly* recommend sitting at the chef's table - you get to see everything. The chefs' technique was excellent.
Flavours were not especially strong, more just different. A strong emphasis on fermentation.
This is a meal for when you want to challenge yourself on what is possible, not when you want a simple night out. Some of the combinations did not work to my taste, but most did.
The non-alchoholic drink selection was unusually good and very special.
If I was being critical then:
* The alcoholic wine did not match the food especially well
* We were never sure where we were in the meal or how many courses remained. We didn't know we'd finished until we were offered the bill.
P.
Fantastic doesn't quite describe the experience. There were many dishes prepared as you watched with a companion wine or alcholic drink. The food was exceptional as was the Host and two assistants with their dialogue and explainations of foods presented to us. There were many plates ,12 or so. The dishes are varied and very filling and very very nice, the wines varied but accompanied the food nicely. I recommend this restaurant for the food and experience of watching professionals at work. The cost is comparable with the overall evening.
c.
Dinned on Sunday for my 30th birthday. This truly was a special experience, the food, the drinks and the chefs all made for a magical night to remember.
Thank you pasture and the hard working chefs!
A.
My partner and I recently enjoyed an evening at Pasture where we both were surprised and delighted with the offering of Menu 003 with pasture match. The food was playful, innovative and unquestionably delicious, the homemade juices were just something else. We spent the evening wide eyed and grinning at the unique flavours we experienced enjoying every dish served to us. The venue is elegant and cosy and we felt at home straight away, the chef's were engaging and clearly delighted with our responses their dishes. After experiencing other notable high end restaurants in Auckland that follow a predictable pattern Pasture was an epic breath of fresh air.
N.
Obviously, the food was superb, but the experience of Pasture stretches well beyond what goes into your mouth. The theatre that went into creating each dish well justified the expense of both time and money - so come with plenty of both. Their philosophy is fresh and local, with many of the stores produced in-house. The sourced ingredients represented a tour of the best New Zealand has to offer, with each prepared with obvious care and passion. It was a joy to witness the team seamlessly moving between stations, supporting each other with minimal conversation. And the drinks pairing was spot-on each time: We highly recommend the 'Pasture' match - a non-alcoholic option demonstrating the same seasonality, ingenuity and attention to detail as the food itself.
E.
Our experience with Pasture was unforgettable. The environment, atmosphere, and of course the food, have a unique and almost Scandinavian vibe. Such creative bunch of people and skilled and experience staff to make sure you are well looked after. High recommend. Also a tip from me is to buy a loaf of gourmet sourdough from these guys before you leave the place!
C.
Pasture is the most fantastic fine dining experience I have had in NZ yet (and I have tried a lot). The food is creative and delicious, the service personalised, the atmosphere warm and relaxed, and watching the food being created is incredibly interesting and entertaining. This restaurant is a must!
N.
Thank you Pasture for the most amazing experience! From the way you explain how your produce is sourced, your values on supporting small boutique sized suppliers, the way you cook your food, plating the foods you cook with such respect and to eating it.
The service is on point too, I recently came in my friends and they still cant stop raving about it.
Reviewed from one creative appreciating another creative, sharing similar values.
Keep doing what all have been doing, Auckland is so lucky to have you guys on the scene carving out your style of foods.
S.
Oh. My. Goodness. This place is beyond anyone's imagination. So much care goes I to each part of the menu, from the minute you walk in when tiny touches are added to a drink to the minute you walk out, unsure when you will next, if ever, experience anything like that...wow. thank you for making our last meal in NZ the best in the world x
J.
This is not your normal dining experience. They come at you with more rules than seems necessary for a meal in a restaurant. However the food journey is worth it, weird, exciting and completely different. The restaurant is hipsters personified that seem to always come back to their purpose in everything they do. Wheather it’s a glass of wine or your bread with the meal it has been researched, laboured over and thought about at length. Not for a quick uncomplicated night out, but definitely a dining experience.
R.
Went here for my 40th, surprised by my fiancé Lauren Bailey and best man chef Ryan Henley, upon entry you are greated like an old friend, first name basis which sets the stage of what's to come. The journey of which you take indulges all the senses, from sight, sound taste and wonderment. The pairing of wine to match the food is second to none leaving you excited and heightened to tastes you have never experienced before. Th slow cooked tomatoes over open flames, the most succulent piece of beef ever to have entered my mouth, unbelievable ways in which simple foods can be transformed by a master chef into life long memories. Truly a night and experience I will treasure forever. I will be back again. Thanks to Ed and the team.
D.
Holy sh#t this place was incredible. Hands down most amazing meal of my life. The booze free cocktail matching option (my lovely wife was pregnant at the time) was unreal too. Do it.
M.
Unreal experience. Heston just got down and earthy. What an adventure. We celebrated two birthdays in style. Can't think how we are going to top this.... don't need to. Very very happy. Well done. Pasture cocktails will kick it.
J.
As a seasonal fine diner I was recommended to visit Pasture by one of my dear clients who has exquisite taste and a great eye for new experiences. I have to say my expectations of this establishment were far exceeded. The collaborations of tastes with the freshest most seasonal ingredients were delicious and challenged and excited my taste buds. Anyone in Auckland looking for the ultimate tasting experience I highly recommend pasture. Furthermore the service was 5* and the layout of the resteraunt was modern, chic and perfect for Parnell!
J.
We had an absolute world class experience dining at Pasture recently. So much good thought put into every aspect of the evening from design of space, to intriguing drinks list (wine list is an understatement) to amazing calculated cuisine, to presentation of cutlery... Dining at this level is about sensory experience from entering until leaving (and perhaps enjoying a loaf of their already famous bread the next day). If you are a true 'serious foodie' enter with an open mind and prepare to be amazed...

10/10
The owners of this restaurant are truly special, humble and fantastically gifted people and their restaurant would easily be in the top ten list of any western city on the planet.
The food is sensational and experimental but at no point does it feel like a gimmick - these guys aren't trying to impress for the sake of it; they genuinely want to challenge conventions and provide a great experience.
Whilst the food is experimental, its clearly based on Michelin star levels of technique and respect for food. I do not want to say to much about the menu as it would ruin the surprise but one dish was simply two types of beetroot wafers with cherry blossom and almond oil and it boggles my mind with its excellence.
The non-alcoholic juice matching should be mandatory as each drink is just as good as the food – the strawberry and toasted buckwheat juice and the sough dough beer were of mind-blowing quality; and the others weren’t far behind.
If there is ever a master of juice qualification Laura and Ed will be the first graduates in NZ
I do have to note that they ask a lot of guests - unlike some other restaurants, deposits are required, the menu is kept secret until you arrive, you are asked to order your drink preferences in advance. However, do not be put off as your faith is more than rewarded with an intimate and exquisite experience that will last in the memory for months
The claims of NZ food magazines that Auckland is a culinary hotspot are way off the mark compared to AU and European cities, but with restaurants like this we truly stand a chance. Please support this restaurant and recognise Ed and Laura for the pioneers they are.
A.
Highly recommend the Pasture Pantry to Go food boxes. The ingredients are second to none. Loved the lobster! Looking forward to dinning in when you’re back open.
M.
Tonight was our fifth time (we think!) at Pasture. Ed and Laura’s menu gets more and more interesting and more and more delicious each time we visit. If you are keen to try tastes that you can’t experience anywhere else in Auckland try here. It is not your run of the mill restaurant, so be prepared to be amazed at the flavours they can produce.
A.
After eating at Pasture yesterday evening I just had to write and let you know how much we enjoyed the wonderful experience. The attention to detail in every respect was superb, the drinks pairing astounding. You are truly artists! Very unique in Auckland ! 5 Star.
r.
My first time dining at Pasture it transported me into an episode of chefs table. World class holistic fine dining in Auckland!? I can’t speak highly enough of Pasture. Everything at the restaurant is considered, the only thing that I ever spotted which hints towards the “other side” of restaurant life was a dust pan and broom behind the counter, and even that was beautiful! The food at times is other worldly and the lengths they take to honour their ingredients and beliefs is mind blowing. I recently found out that sugar isn’t an ingredient in the kitchen!
O.
Came in for the 5 course degustation.
Pasture is a lovely and thoughtful restaurant. Welcoming from the start, Laura took us to our table and gave us a run down of Pasture.
Such a wonderful and unique experience, hyper seasonal food, exquisite flavours and well designed drink matches.
Only problem is finding the time to go back!
C.
An intimate food experience like no other, from the time you are greeted at the door by the team to the time you leave. Ed is a real alchemist, he takes the food and drink experience to another level. We would love to come back and experience another season.
C.
Literally the BEST restaurant in New Zealand. ❤️
K.
Exceptional. Loved every minute and the attention to detail. The Pasture match drinks were delicious as were the wines. Truly incredible. Loved the subtle flavours in the food and the two deserts were amazing. Thank you for a wonderful night.
B.
Food was hit and miss, some dishes were good some not so. Example they served freshly baked sourdough bread, mine had a burnt crust, when you are paying $300+ per person there should be some quality control
M.
I never truly experienced food until I went here. Thank you Chef Ed for opening my eyes to the insane pleasure that food can be! Everyone needs to go here once to experience the awesomeness!
L.
Amazing experience, really unique and special
S.
Wow what a culinary experience - from start to finish - the dishes, the innovative wine matches & cocktails and the theatre of viewing the chefs at work was truly an a emersive experience - totally recommend this restaurant, it’s a bit different too which is great!
