Reviews of Sri Pinang
E.
Oh my I just realized that I walked into a legendary restaurant of Auckland city!
This narrow long shape restaurant is full of Malaysian flavours.
The lady owner is so passionate about what she is doing and this has been continuing for more than 20 years I guess.
Very delicious, very homie feeling, I am loving it!
E.
Great char kwei tiau..the flat noodle has a homemade texture quality with generous seafood toppings. The chicken satay sauce is so yum and how i wish i asked for more of the special peanut sauce . The satay meat is well marinated as well ...it reminded me of my home indonesian satay kacang . Thank you Sripinang for keeping it authentic.
A.
I have not been here in a while because of traffic, but it remains to be one of the best Malaysian restaurants in Auckland.
This evening we had a couple of simple dishes: Prawn noodle soup and Fried (Char) Kuey Teow. Both dishes were very authentic.
If you like Malaysian food, particularly the Penang (the food capital of Malaysia), give this place a try.
The host/owner is very knowledgeable and courteous, offering great service.
C.
Delicious food, great portions and the staff are SO kind. I didn’t get the front lady’s name, but she was honestly the sweetest lady ever and so proud of the restaurant. I would be too!
We came on a Monday and it wasn’t busy, our food came out within 15 mins of ordering. We had the Mee Goreng (had a great variety of veggies in it), Beef Rendang, Roti (these were sooo good and flakey), chicken satay (yum homemade satay sauce, not too sweet), spring rolls and more. Had enough for leftovers for next day!
They don’t sell alcohol, but allow BYO for cheap. So glad we came here, will definitely be back and will tell all our friends! Thank you 😊
L.
I walked in randomly without booking on a Saturday night, the place was really busy but lucky we were able to get a table. The staff was super helpful and friendly. My friend has a few allergies and they did their best to accommodate for it. The food was good, massive portions we ended up taking half of it away.
R.
Had dinner here last night glad we booked very busy you have to be in by 9pm latest as close at 10pm. We all enjoyed our dinner the green tea was yum if you want alcohol make sure you bring it your self. Cost $$
C.
Great authentic restaurant. Excellent customer service and tasty food. Price is very reasonable with an exceptional quality.
i.
Such a vegetarian paradise~ You can easily get a table full of all vegetarian dishes: eggplant, bean sprouts, dodol (tastes like chicken but made of wheat apparently 😲)~
I just love their flavours: Curry, Rendang... Not spicy at all though, so ask for super spicy if you like that😝... Roti was made to order, crispy on the outside, super tender on the inside, have it on it's own or to soak up the curry😋~~
D.
Love Sri Pinang so much. This is easily my favourite Malaysian restaurant in Auckland and I've been coming here since the mid 1990's! Angie has always been an excellent host and all her staff have always been so friendly over the years. Some of my favourite dishes are chicken curry laksa, roti canai with curry, char kuey teow, nasi lemak and beef rendang. I'm also very fond of some of the desserts e.g. the rambutans and sago served with rich coconut milk...yummmm 😋
S.
We have been coming here for over 2 years and this is by far our favourite place to eat. Portion sizes are generous unlike other restaurants where they are going down. The staff are kind and welcoming and the owner is an amazing lady. She first helped us combine differnt dishes when we first sat in to eat in 2019. We have supported them all over lockdown as they deserve the buisness and the food is stunning. Please do not change. We will be back to dine in when the alert levels move down.
A.
The flavour wasn’t for me but it was big portions and friendly staff. The roti was really good. The laksa was a big portion and came with egg noodle only. Usually it is a mix of egg and rice noodles. The beef rendang was okay. I wouldn’t say there was much flavour to it. Was very similar to what I think satay would be. Our waiter was super friendly. So that was a good experience.
R.
Sri Pinang has a epic selection of malaysian curries, fried noodles and fried dishes! I would highly recommend the Mee Goreng and Chicken Pinang curry. I found some curries with other meats such as pork a bit chewy, but nevertheless flavourful. The serving sizes are generous for the price. Getting a dish per head and sharing will definitely have everyone at the table full. With $1 corkage and a liquor store across the road you can’t go wrong if your in the mood for yummy BYO dinner before a event! Overall considering the cheap corkage, generous serving sizes, and yummy food even though the food might not fine dining the price to performance ratio on this joint is epic, would highly recommend!
H.
Absolutely amazing.
Welcomed with a warm smile!
And served fast.
Owner always gives the best advices.
Just try it.🙌
S.
This traditional Malaysian restaurant is located on K road. We went there around 9.30pm , the place was still pretty crowded. Highly recommend fried rice, it tastes soooooo different among others. Sri Pinang is also suitable to big group dining as the portion and price is great.
L.
The food here is fantastic and the service was friendly and quick considering how busy the restaurant was. The spring rolls (made in house, which is a rare but delightful thing) were amazing and while all my friends loved what they had, I can only vouch for my veggie laksa, which was really delicious. I'll be coming here again as soon as I can. Also only a $3 corkage fee!
L.
The food was really delicious.
We ordered BBQ pork, chicken curry and devilled chicken curry. Highly recommend devilled chicken curry, omg so good. BBQ pork was very tinder and flavourful. We thought curry will come with rice but nah you need order as extra.
The only thing that we think they need to improve is the serving speed. After we finished our entree, we waited for 40mins to get our curry.
T.
What a beautiful experience. Awesome authentic malaysian food and the most beautiful owner who made the whole experience even better. Thankyou Angie, we will be back!
A.
Recommended by Marty from Auckland Free Walking Tours (he’s been coming for 27 years!), this restaurant did not disappoint! It’s right in the middle of the K-Street restaurant area, and it was busy throughout our meal.
Bring your own wine or beer, as they do t serve any alcohol. (There’s a liquor store right across the street!)
We got the roti curry to start (amazing!) and the took the recommendation of Beef Renang and one of the house rice noodle dishes that had chicken, squid, sausage and shrimp. (I think fried Kwai teow) We were absolutely starving when we went in, and stuffed when we left, but still had some leftover food to take away.
Highly recommend adding this to your visit!
S.
Great place. My Husband and I love to dine here. Great food, great price and BYO. Perfection!
J.
This is the go to place for Malaysian food in Auckland. Prices are very reasonable portions generous and it’s BYO. What’s not to like!
M.
Really good food with authentic flavours. Friendly service with plenty of advice about which dishes to try and good combinations. Good value. Take your own alcoholic drinks. Would highly recommend this place and will be going again .
R.
We had a table of 5.
It was fully booked with a few bday parties....even with the full restaurant, we didn't have any delays with service, drinks or food.
The owner was amazing, great Sense of humor and very welcoming.
We ordered " menu A " and the food was amazing! Meat melted in your mouth and so full of flavour....
Highly recommend and will def be dining again when ever we're in Auckland.
H.
Really really delicious, chicken satay is a highlight as well as the beef rendang.
L.
Sri Pinang has been the go to Malaysian place for my family since the 90s. The food is authentic and delicious. Their roti is the best I've ever tried - it is so good (super flaky layers and NOT sweet) that I use it as the standard by which I rate all other roti. Our favorites are: roti curry (!!!!), lemon chicken, beef with special sauce, beef with ginger (and a bunch others I'm sure I've forgotten to mention). Their food (and restaurant) is wholesome and laid back but they have refined their food more than somewhere like KK, so there is never any spice 'grit' in the curry and they use boneless, skinless chicken in their curry, bringing it more in line with the local market without compromising flavour. The prices are very reasonable too.
C.
Delicious food, friendly staff and nice atmosphere, its a BIG YES 👍
E.
I was there with friends just recently. I tried their Chat Kuey Teow with lots of chilli. Excellent chilli intake level for me, I love the authenticity and originality of the meal, as this is a great quality from a professional restaurant that derives from Malaysia. It’s truly Asia!
B.
No alcohol sold but fabulous value food, the best roti in the city.
J.
Food is great, staff really nice and helpful. Parking on galatos St, not coco's!
R.
Simply the greatest cheap eats in Auckland. Been going here for nigh on 30 years and have never been disappointed. BYO with incredibly cheap corkage. Ange runs the place with brisk efficiency but is both warm and welcoming. If I could give more stars, I would.
D.
A place i eat at 3 or 4 times a year when catching up with friends. The service and food are always great and the roti curry is a firm favourite. Prices are very reasonable and the place has a good following and was busy again tonight.
E.
As a Penang lang, the charkoayteow was OK, too much bean sprout. Rendang was all right with a lot of spiciness and roti was crunchy. We were the only Asian customers in the restaurant so that says something! Overall it was so so. Come with reasonable expectation.
W.
Fantastic Malaysian food with superb service! Angie’s such a lovely host to welcome you by the door. Love the banana fritters! Bit tight on space and not the best lighting but hey can’t help going back for their food. 😊😇
J.
Highly recommend visting sri pinang if you are interested in trying malaysian cuisine, as the portions are generous, the pricing is affordable and the food is flavourable. The beef rendang does taste similar to a yellow curry, so do not expect it do have a meaty taste, however it is still very delicious. Staff are also very friendly and helpful in explaining what the dishes are, overall a good experience.
M.
Such a good place to eat and still really well priced after so many years. Authentic Sth East Asian food and sooooo delicious. A must for any and all who seek to enlighten the taste buds.
N.
Fantastic little Malaysian food joint here. The service was outstanding, extremely authentic food with great flavors - and cheap too! My only gripe was there wasn't a cold beer to wash it down with, but that's minor, only reason why it's not 5 stars! It is BYO though, so I'll remember that fit next time.
M.
Marvellous food, big portions and good flavours
C.
Amazing $10 lunch chicken and roti deal. Nasi Goreng/Mi Goreng are very tasty too and service is fast. Have been multiple times and the food has been consistent. Can get busy for lunch, so reserve ahead to secure a table.
P.
I believe I am their best customer. Authentic Malaysian food and very reasonably priced. The hostess is magnificent in all respects and her husband continues to prepare great food as he has done for 25 years. An Auckland gem and an iconic establishment. I love the curries. Yes the decor is dated but for the price you pay the experience is magnificent. Love it.
A.
Haven’t been there in a while. The owner is welcoming, takes the effort to have a chat. Not to forget, the food is delicious too. Good experience.
F.
Vegan char koey tiao was so yummy. Boss so friendly. So glad they got selection of vegan dishes.
L.
Wanted to go to this restaurant for a while, very happy, better to book as it’s busy, great food, we took BYO. Really good service, dishes were generous and very tasty. Four of us had plenty of food for $105.00. So no complaints, would go back when we want Malaysian food again. Go and try it worth it if you are local or a visitor to Auckland great ambiance for a small restaurant.Simple restauranr, no alcohol, but bring your own works fine. A party of 8 next table had 10 bottles going :) The room is small, about 40 seats. Friendly waiter advised, bread goes well with this, and it did. Low priced, we split a course and it was fine. Came again sunday, but that is their close day.
D.
This is one of my favorite restaurants, it is small and cozy. The food is authentic Malay and is great. Of course, one of downsides of being small and cozy and popular is that it can be hard to get a table here, especially around Christmas time when there are lots of groups dining here. Very reasonable prices.
R.
This hole in the wall restaurant never fails to provide an amazingly authentic Malaysian dining experience. The beef rendang is a must, as in the lemak rice and fat rice noodles with pork and squid. Truly amazing!! We ate like kings and took a bottle of byo wine and the entire bill was only $60!! Sooo cheap!! You will kick yourself if you don’t try this cosy restaurant! It’s even worth putting up with a trip to Auckland for! ;-)
A.
Hands down the best Malaysian in Auckland. You can not possibly fault this place. Fantastic food and Angie is a fantastic host.

A.
Food was delicious, they have a lot of options for vegan and vegetarians or adapt them for you if needed.
Personal was really friendly.
Highly recommended.
E.
Friendly and reliable Malaysian food
M.
great local place, fantastic value and the chicken curry with roti is the star.
C.
The employees are extremely friendly and helpful and the food is great. I am a vegetarian, and I got a lot of help navigating the menu. I got and enjoyed the curry vegetables. The portions are large, so you may want to split with others.
S.
Wish I can give 3.5 stars. Had high hopes because of the many positive reviews, ordered the classics (migoreng, sambal chicken) with their special prawn dish ($28). To be honest, not the best tasting Malaysian food - the prawn dish was very strong in flavour, quite overpowering, and the migoreng quite blend, with the noodle too soft and overcooked...roti was really good though, crunchy on the outside, soft in the inside, buttery. Overall, personally found the food quite average. The ambience was cozy and staff were very welcoming and hospitable though, which was a huge plus and made us enjoy our time nevertheless.
Tip - book your table in advance as the place is quite small and popular.
A.
Highly recommended for great value (good serving size, delectable authentic taste), amazing service - staff gives recommendations per dietary choices. The place is good enough but booking recommended as they are usually always full. They also take phone orders for takeaways.
A.
Great place and service. Tablecloths (!). Highly recommended. Will be back. Try Malaysian tea, if "white" (with milk) strong black tea is your thing. Vegetable curry was amazing and roti bread one of the best I tried.
D.
This restaurant attracts mostly western customers with their high class decoration and BYO. The prices are quite expensive for a single person meal however their shared meal prices are reasonable and their food quality is very good. Definitely worth checking it out if you're going as a group. Reservation is required as they are always booked out, or you can choose to have it take away.
B.
The food there was DELICIOUS 😋. very authentic Malaysian 🇲🇾 cuisine. I was introduced to this restaurant 🍴 by my colleague who had been eating there for the last 12 years. I must say that the food was excellent and flavoursome 😋. The dining area is small but cosy. Various table sizes, can cater for 2 to 5 people. Anything more, then you will need to book ahead so they can reserve a table or two to fit a large group greater than 5 people.
This is a BYO, and they don't sell alcoholic drinks. There is a liquor store across the road should you need to get alcohol.
We've ordered 2 entrees and 5 mains. The satay chicken 🐔 was wonderful but its satay peanut sauce was a let down. The roti canai was ok, better than nothing as not easy to find other restaurants that sell this dish. Nasi lemak tasted good 😍 with the sambal was spicy enough to be enjoyable. You need to try the other dishes, some of you will like and some will not. Everyone has different palates.
Would I go back? Yes 😊
Food: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5. It is yummy 😋
Ambience: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ out of 5. Well, it is a small shop. So, don't expect too much.
Price: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5. Reasonable price for the dishes.
B.
I believe I have a tongue for fine food. This the best Malaysian Chinese food I've ever had. And the owner is a very nice and kind lady.
R.
I've been going here for many years and I've never had a bad meal. The owners are welcoming. It's almost always busy and the place hums. Cheap tasty food and plenty of it. Corange is a dollar. And the roti is the best in town...no the world.
P.
I've been eating at Sri Pinang since it first opened in the early nineties and I haven't found a better Malaysian restaurant anywhere in Auckland.
Their food is consistently great - especially the seafood curry laksa. They make their own laksa paste - no packet nasties here! The service is good too. Highly recommended.
T.
For a non Malaysian, it's great, popular with non Malaysian.
I wouldn't go back.
Staff personality are on the opposite end, one is so friendly and smiling and engaging, it offset the other.
A.
I love this place, not even because the food is anything outstanding, but because the experience itself is always pleasant. Food portions are really generous, cheap $1 corkage and super friendly hostess Angela. We always come away with a smile. I recommend the Seafood Mee Goreng and Spicy Tofu..really yummy!
J.
Ordered off the lunch menu and the owner lady was very helpful in helping me and my friend decide what to order. The roti was freshly made and the curry that came with it was flavorful and delicious. I tried nasi lemak for the first time, and I'm so glad I did, as it is now one of my favorite dishes. We also ordered a side of steamed vegetables, and we enjoyed a very well balanced meal.
A.

One of Auckland's best BYO's! The service is always exceptional and the hostess is always on hand with menu recommendations. The prices are reasonable and at $1 corkage you can feel free to order a few things without feeling like you're breaking the bank. Make sure to book if it's the weekend though - this is a favourite of Auckland city locals.
d.
A iconic eating establishment serving tasty inexpensive authentic Malaysian Cuisine. Hostess Angie has been fronting this cozy little eatery for at least the last 25 years and always makes you feel welcomed with her engaging smile and charming wit.
m.
Very satisfy with the food and price.
Nice Aunty . 😘
H.
Owned by Malaysians, thus is a good place to savour authentic Malaysian food. Owner and staffs are very nice and friendly. Food portion is quite big at reasonable price.
M.
A trusted name for many years, Sri Pinang offers authentic Malaysian cuisine at the highest level on dishes like char kuey teow, curry laksa and roti. An absolute pleasure to dine in and to be served by friendly staff and owner. Booking is essential in this place even on week nights! Parking can be a bit of an issue but it is well worth the effort. Highly recommended!
J.
Great authentic Malaysian food. Our hostess was amazing, and the service was perfect. The food is delicious, and one of our fav places to eat in auckland, will be back again.
S.
Great service! Decent serving! Yummy food.
D.
Very good value. Is fresh and you can tell they really care about the food and customers. Old fashioned decor, but for the price and quality of the food you cant bet it.
J.
Best Malay food in Auckland for sure. Love auntie’s food
S.
Amazing delicious food. Every dish is divine, but the atmosphere/decor is not that good, the light is a bit weird. Great staff, good food value. Highly recommended
A.
Can be Spicy food by weak European standards. Overall nice, generous portions for most. Good Value, worth it if you have never had Malasian bfefore
M.
Super tasty food, portions are fairly generous, price is reasonable. Staff is friendly. Also BYO beer and/or wine.
Make sure you book a table before you go!
M.
As always a delicious meal for a good price and ate just a little too much! But can't eat here and not have roti and curry 😊
D.
Magnificent as always, happy customer for two decades
H.
There is much hype about Sri Pinang, it's well known amongst local Aucklanders.
Having paid a visit, the hype seemed more genuinely around it's BYO policy and cheap food rather than the tastes and flavours. The food is ok and you can be assured it won't be bad. But a long traverse up Queen Street seems a bit wasted as you can get better Malaysian food in the middle of CbD. Malaysian restaurants are becoming saturated throughout Auckland - most menus are identical with similar quality of food and Sri Pinang falls right in the middle of that description.
Tip:
Take advantage of the BYO - it's a good choice for a Friday dinner with your friends or workmates where you won't be too fussed about the food.
J.
The food is incredible. Try the fried kwoy tow, beef rendang, curried aubergine...hell, try it all including the best roti anywhere ever. Cheap, delicious and only a dollar corkage per bottle.
A.
Best Malaysian food in town! Chicken curry, beef rendeng, ROTI!!, migoreng, char kuey teow... omg everything... But we never get to dine in because they’re always full! Even picking up takeaways is hard because of parking :(
A.
Great food and friendly staff. Can't wait to go back.
The beef rendang was amazing
Char kway teow was also amazing
Roti amazing
Roti curry... Was good but has nothing on the rendang.
B.
$1 byo and amazing Malaysian food. Went with a vegetarian so we all opted to get veggie dishes. The eggplant curry and veggie mee goreng were standout.
I.
Nice enough place and very nice people who run it but sadly the food lacked punch. A bit bland and not overly tasty as one expects from Malaysian.
L.
Their roti curry can't be beaten, char kwei tiew is also the best I've had. Best Malaysian in Auckland
O.
first time dining out at Sri Pinang! Great food and awesome hospitality. we will defiantly visit when we are in the area. Thank you heaps :)
G.
Awesome food. A K'road institution, it's easy to see why it's so popular with great reviews.
K.
The food is always delicious and the staff are friendly and chatty. It gets very busy so I recommend booking in advance.
H.
My favorite restaurant of all time — nasi lemak, fish curry, chicken rendang: all to die for. Proprietor Angie and staff are lovely!

Ordered 'hot' nasi lemak, it is tasty and hot enough by kiwi standard. However, it shouldn't be called nasi lemak as it's literally not. It is however a nice special dish...
