My go to yum char place 😋 love their siu mai, friend pork buns, fried squid, and prawn dumplings. Love the mochi vanilla ice cream as well. Service is pretty quick and staff is usually friendly. Highly recommended! 👍

Typically noisy, busy and underwhelming in external facade, Star Cafe delivers great assortment of dimsum. Notably their BBQ pork buns, sticky glutinous chicken rice (lormaigai), custard egg tarts, dumplings and savoury carrot cake. Happily go there any day of the week.

Fabulous service specially if you speak their language. They are also very accommodating to all customers equally so don't be hesitant to try this place. Parking is limited closer to the restaurant but there are plenty all around, you just got to walk a couple of extra minutes. Good prices, tasty food, unlimited tea. Building is a bit old so don't expect 5 star restaurant visual impact when you walk in.

Star Cafe had been a regular me for 13yrs+. Their Yum Cha was one of the best around. Lots of variety, consistently good, and reasonably priced. Changed with new owners, increased prices, reduced portion sizes. So much focus on Uber and food deliveries, that selection and service to patrons in restaurant is poor.

Still my favourite Chinese restaurant, after what must be 20 years of going there. Love the salt and pepper squid, sweet and sour pork/chicken and sizzling pepper fillet but the menu is huge and has more than enough variety to suit everybody. Huge portions so ideal for sharing. For the portion sizes, prices are more than fair. BYO too! As with many Chinese restaurants, the order of arrival of food items (including any "starters") is hit-or-miss, but we've got used to that. Many Chinese patrons (a good sign!) but also well supported by the broader NZ community.

Good range of food, friendly staff. We ordered Menu C and the food were quite nice except for the sticky rice chicken which was frozen in the middle when it was served first time. Staff swapped it with a fresh one for us and it was delicious. I ordered half a dozen of steamed oysters which i didn't like too much about - way too much garlic covered on the top with very little vermicelli, the oyster was not fresh and tasted bitter with black stuff inside, i think they didnt clean them properly or didn't take time to let the oyster release the sand before cooking...

Always love this cafe. Our go to for yumcha. Yesterday though, at lunch time, they were packed but not the usual super packed. Waitress was a bit rude. We wanted go get spoon & fork as our friend wasn't comfortable with the chopsticks and the waitress just practically threw it on table and walked away. The staff carrying the food were nice though. Food still delicious.

Great place to have Yum Cha at the North Shore. Good food, fast service. I hope in the future the staff would be a little bit more attentive and friendly to non Chinese speaking customers.

Haven't been here for a while. Had a family dinner with Lobster, Roast Duck, Egg Plant hot pot and a plate of veges. Good size portions for the price. Lobster noodle had a little too much sauce but still very good.

Obviously still very popular. It wasn't as noisy as usual until one waitress who was serving us screamed (in Chinese) at a colleague at the other end of the restaurant. It caused my ears to ring! But apart from that it was enjoyable. The variety of dishes here is excellent - there is always something different to try. A constant stream of offerings and very good value for money. I checked the Auckland Council website and it has an A rating for hygiene as at April 2017 which is always good to know.

Nice place for yum cha. It's fairly large restaurant with additional seats on the second floor. Usually packed on the weekend. Food quality and service are good. Consistent. Toilet is sub par though. It is one of those restaurants that we go regularly but wouldn't consider it a fancy for sure.

Nice variety of food, but some dishes were already completely cold by the time they arrived at our table. The younger staff members were more helpful than the older ladies, but that might also have to do with our attempts to ask questions in English; Chinese speakers might have better luck in this regard 😉. Plenty of booster seats for babies and toddlers available, which is good, but ours wasn't 100% in working order and i had to improvise to keep my 9-months old from slipping off the chair. Not so much of a problem if the child is a bit older. Decoration was decent and altogether I'd say the place has improved since our last visit which was several years back. I didn't use the toilets after my husband (who did) warned me that they were pretty bad and promised to take me elsewhere.

Very often crowded and seems to attract the Westerners guided by their Asian friends. The dishes are fast and adequate in variety and there are special items such as roast pork, fried squid and lobster noodles. Not hygienic enough for me as I often get stomach aches after dining there. Still arguably the best dim sum restaurant you will find on the Shore.

It's a great Yum Cha joint. But I would encourage my fellow kiwis to try them all. This isn't the only place on the shore that does great Yum Cha. If you can get a table without too much wait enjoy! I for one dont like waiting and there are three other establishments within 5 or so minutes that are equally as good. Best piece of advice. Make sure the person who knows what they are doing is seated closest to where the servers will pull up. They can "translate" for the uninitiated. That being said one of my favorite spots in Wairau. Enjoy if you are in the area

This is the place you go to when you're trying to impress business associates. With a loud and cramped atmosphere typical of most Asian restaurants, this one tastes great, in return for high prices. Numerous seatings will mean you are almost always guaranteed a table, even without a reservation. All in all a good restaurant; just be wary of the dent it may put in your wallet.

I found this little cafe a few years ago purely by fluke. Since then we have been back several times due to the great food, vast choices of dishes, friendly staff and reasonable prices. I highly recommend the Star Cafe when you next crave excellent Yum Char, you need to visit this restaurant!!
