Today my wife and I had lunch to celebrate her birthday with our toddler. The food was absolutely brilliant, what made our day even more special, despite trying to tangle a toddler was the brilliant, friendly service by the team. In particular I would like to acknowledge and thank Charlotte for her friendly service with a smile. We will definitely be back.

I had my 21st Birthday dinner here and it was wonderful! The food was delicious! The service was fantastic and friendly. All credit to Line, she made the night. Always checking if we needed anything, smiling and so professional. She was absolutely fantastic! It was the day before ANZAC and we’re pretty busy but Line was just amazing and really made our group feel welcome. When (not if) we come back we certainly hope Line is there. Shout out to this amazing member of staff!!

I usually go along to this place as I have typically found it to have good service and nice food, recently however I was unimpressed by the service and the quality of food, the steak was extraordinarily expensive, the quality of meat was poor, tough and chewy, the service was average at best. I will be returning, if only to alter my review again, hopefully for the better not worse. Not sure I would recommend coming here.

Initial lack of greeting from the first waitress that saw us nearly had us leave. The second waitress was lovely though. She seated us, accommodated some fussy food changes (sorry chefs). My food was absolutely delicious. Steak was rare instead of medium rare but the cut was good enough to work. Veggies were fabulous too. My friend's chips weren't good, pork belly was decent though. We didn't get a meal check until I was on my last bite though. All in all it was a decent experience, and food was good- but there is room for improvement. We will be back.

My friend and I went out for dinner and were rudely ignored by the girls outside. However, we were served by Charlie who was absolutely amazing! She made the night a lot better and helped with everything we needed :)

Overall food is good: Pizza is excellent but the ribs are burnt and dry. Customer service is excellent. Decent variety of items on the menu. Is quite expensive for the portion sizes though - would only be back as part of a group or with first table.

Pretty empty for a Saturday. Pizza was nice although quite thin for $23. Staff are usually pretty good but sometimes you get left alone for a while and have to find waitstaff to help. Ambiance is great but the outdoor section is absolutely filled with smokers - it’s pretty unbearable unless you’re a smoker yourself!

Great place on a sunny day. What a huge, long bar and eatery. Lots and lots seating, outdoor tables, umbrellas and heaps of friendly staff buzzing around wearing the tops from the local Baseball team they sponsor. Wide range of food on the menu including a seperate kids menu. We had pizza, the (yummy) Wagu beef burger, chips and a Caesar salad. Drinks were wide ranging, loved the option of having 0.0% Heineken beer on tap in amongst a wide range of alcoholic beers and wines. Nice touch. The kids had Devine house made strawberry sodas. Great work Merchant. Especially at the peek of the holiday season. Nailed it. We will be back.

Went back here today after a year or so, walked out last time as slack service, however today was super! Attentive staff and quick service, water on table within minutes. Ordered a tandoori pizza and home cut fries - so addictive :) definitely stepped up and made lunch enjoyable

i have been coming here for a long time now, i have always been treated with so much care and respect, and always served within minutes upon arrival, the manager Lina has the sweetest personality and has always helped us with any issues or just a question we had with the menu. She makes sure even when busy to stop, say hello and check up on our service. She has introduced us to Nikah, one of the new managers i believe, who has also taken care of us, made sure everything was ok and been very attentive and helpful even in these hard covid times. Appreciate the awesome merchant staff, as they never fail to keep us smiling and provide great and outstanding service.

Just had dinner at The Merchant - first patronage since the end of lockdown and I could not fault it at all! The entry process with vaccine passes was seamless, all took less than 30 seconds until we were seated. Drinks were flowing, people were laughing - was a great visit straight out of lockdown.

They have a casual comfy ambiance, good value food & the service team are great 👍 My pork belly was moist with crunchy crackling but rice portion was too big for me. Hubby had the steak, medium; with seasonal veggies. Steak was Medium rare but he enjoyed all the chips & veggies. Our 2nd time going & will go again. They can do groups as well. Would've been 5 stars but we had to go find someone to take our order, we were not brought any water (we had to ask) and we order a starter and 2 mains and they all came out at the same time. Lovely environment but the Kaarage pork was a bit average. Mostly just pork belly fat dipped in spices and deep fried. The amount of pure fat just becomes a little too much. Others said their meals were good. Saag curry, nachos, fish and chips and a cesar salad

Good place to just dive in and grab some food. Reasonable prices and on par with local area, although a couple of elements were getting up there in $$$. Portions are good and food is well presented. A solid place to stop in and eat. Meal for two adults and one child with one alcoholic drink per adult, a shared starter, kids' main, small platter, kids' dessert and adult dessert came in at a slightly high $130. Hunting around, they're described as $25-35 per head. For an adult with a drink it's closer to $50, so be informed and be prepared. Nice place to be, would recommend to others.

Went here for our anniversary, early dinner so place is not that packed. Was treated to great service and nice, tasty food. The lady who served our food was awesome. She managed to give us complimentary drinks when she learned we are celebrating 15 yrs. I forgot to ask her name but we were impressed.

Went here for dinner to celebrate my Dad's birthday. The menu is full of different options providing a balance between meat, seafood and vegetable options. For entrés we ordered: 1. Salt and Pepper Squid which is served with a nice wasabi aioli. The wasabi is not strong but is at a level where it adds flavour. The squid is cooked perfectly. 8/10. 2. Honey Soy chicken. This was on the side of being overcooked and the plate could do more with sauce. 6/10. 3. Onion Rings. Simple onion rings done well. 8/10. For Mains we ordered: 1. Pork Belly. This is served with rice and bok choy. The pork belly could have been cooked less as it was on the verge of being dry, but it was still solid. Would have been perfect with more seasoning and if it was juicy. 6/10. 2. Sirloin steak. This is what I ordered. While the idea is simple, it was done so well. I could not fault it. The steak was cooked medium rare and the jus of the steak covers the fries so well. Just some salt on it and it's perfect. 10/10. 3. Fish and Chips. A solid meal, and the fish was cooked perfectly. 8/10. 4. Israeli couscous salad. Nothing special, there are better options on the menu. 7/10. For desert we had the Mango parfait which was served with slices of lychee and pineapple. This is a perfect way to end the meal if you've had something really savoury. Very refreshing. 10/10. Overall a solid dinner, this is a restaurant that I will come back to.

Great service even though it was very busy. I ordered 3 vegetable side dishes as a main (I know, I'm weird like that). What came out was amazing. It was all on one plate unlike other places I've been to; and presented beautifully with a couple of added touches. The kitchen staff clearly love what they do and take pride in their work. I'll be honest, over the years I've had good meals at The Merchant & I've had not so good meals at The Merchant. But I always go back cos the staff are great, and the location is so easy. Tonight I had an amazing meal! Lara their Events Coordinator was kind enough to arrange a 4 course set menu for us tonight to make up for the fact that their comedy show had to be cancelled, and I have to say every part was outstanding. We'd dined at a high end Auckland Waterfront restaurant on Saturday night and I can without hesitation say that the scallops entree at The Merchant was tastier (and bigger), and the steak at The Merchant blew the expensive city restaurant's steak out of the water. Our server Gemma was amazing and and very helpful with our coeliac requirements too. Big 5 star rating from me tonight.

Nice bar overlooking a lake with a good view of the hills. We were here twice as it's close by our hotel and office, both times the staff were friendly, even if the food and drinks were a little expensive. Happened to go on a quiz night, which was a ton of fun with friends even though we didn't officially participate. Nothing super exceptional but the bar snacks were good and there was a variety of beer to be had. The only odd thing was the first night we moved our tab from a table outside to the inside due to rain, when we got our bill it was far too low and assumed that they just forgot to move the tab over. We let the server know and assumed it would be taken care of as we continued chatting. Nope, 45 minutes later we start to head home and get corralled by the manager who implies that we are trying to skip out on our tab; Even though we made sure our server knew that there were drinks missing from our order, and left the card with the server. We ended up with 3 separate receipts that night because of the servers and managers but everything was sorted out by the end. Not a particularly bad experience, but just a little off-putting. Easily offset by the fact that the servers/bartenders were kind and checked in on us many times to make sure we were good and had what we wanted.

Besides outdoor score making its way into the restaurant I couldn't fault anything. The restaurant team put on a thoroughly professional buffet including a full desert and candy option at the end. Updating my review again (Jan 2021). They have a vegan/gluten free menu and all the food is great. However it is getting really expensive. I think $22 for a glass of Jules Taylor Sav is too much. Plus they have a 2% surcharge for credit cards when you go to pay. I believe this charge should be included in their pricing.

Maybe I'm getting too old for places like this but the music was loud enough so that no decent conversation could be held except with the person right next to you. Even placing your order with the waitron was a challenge. As an anniversary night out it was disappointing, notwithstanding the complimentary bottle of bubbly, so if you are looking for an intimate evening out with friends and your loved one, this is not the place. The food was decent but had a pub feel to it rather than a restaurant. That may be what was aimed at, but it the place is located in an upmarket area and seemed to attract the younger crowd looking for a quick meal before heading out on the town.

Merchant is one of mine and my husbands favorite places to eat (and both of our families for that matter). Every time we visit the staff are friendly, and 99% of the time, very attentive. The Sunday live music in the sun with a beer is a winning combination. The pork belly is delicious. Great atmosphere, family friendly (even your staff interact with our kids) and an all round good place to meet, greet and eat.

Average sorry guys, Had lunch here with the family, Salad was quite expensive at $32+ which included the extra $$ to have chicken on it, Burger and chips were ok, Pizza was good. Fish and chips below par. Drinks are pricey and if you are with kids or a non-smoker don't sit outside to eat as we did, this is a smoking area which is unusual considering its part of Westfield Mall and shares common space with other eateries. Bit of a shame considering the outdoor area and the nice day. Suggest going smokefree.

What a wonderful night we just had, it was our work Christmas, I have no idea how they managed to get 28 meals out, I looked up and saw everyone was served. Wished I had put in a review this time last year when I had my birthday there. It was fab. Have been a few times and enjoyed it. Today, with my 89 year old parents, a booking and a birthday, waited to be seated while 2 girls at the till chatted in front of us. After getting their attention we got our 'booked' table pointed out to us (over the back there), so found our own way to it. Waitress did come over eventually and fill up our glasses with water, except she filled up both my parents and then a random one at another placing that wasn't occupied (people hadn''t arrived yet). So I wasn't taken care of. I then discovered my glass was dirty (had a large smudge on mouthpiece) so got up and took it to one of the same girls, who were back again talking to each other, she took glass from me and then said, I will bring you one in a minute. Then carried on talking to each other again (in front of me) . Our final guests arrived and we got served, my sister asked for Caesar salad without the egg and could she have something in its place, so it was agree on avocado. She was also told it came with tomatoe. The waitress then came back and asked if she would like chicken instead of avocado so she agree. It came out with neither tomatoe, avocado or chicken. I asked if I could have a half order of the Merchant breakfast at which they said no. I then ordered a squid and salad dish which if you bought accompanied with fries cost more, so I ordered without. When mine was delivered I was told it was the entree size. It was very small. The main size was the one with the fries. There were no entrees on the menu because I looked for them. After drawing attention to these issues, suddenly a male waiter took over, offered to correct thngs and then bought my sister avocado and chicken (which looked like reheated shredded) and I got offered a serving of fries at no cost. However, the damage was done, and my elderly parents decided they wouldn't come back. We felt dissapointed at the lack of interest in the customers. I have never seen a waitress talk so much to someone on staff with so little investment in the job at hand. Whatever the reason (new or untrained or neither) is no excuse in the food industry. We are your bread and butter so to speak. Without customers there is no job. Needs to be a big change in attitude. We may not return, sorry!

I'm consistently amazed at how much they charge for drinks - it's more expensive than destination venues like the Viaduct and Ponsonby. My other gripe is their insistence on serving a 'European head' on the beer when it's simply not possible - the foam has collapsed, leaving a half empty looking glass, before you've finished paying.
