Reviews of The Queen Charlotte Tavern

Just as you thought that stay at Anakiwa is going to a desolate dining experience after completing a hard day on the Queen Charlotte Sound Track, we were made aware by out accommodation host of a rural pub at Linkwater (which is eons away from Anakiwa especially after a big walk), however our concerns were put to rest when the Tavern owner operator happily picked us up for a meal there (and drop us off) . 5 stars for that, but to top that, just when you assumed that you will have to put up with rural pub grub, gosh were we mistaken, the food was amazing, better then some of the fine dining offer on the QCS track. Also the lovely lady whom runs it also happily accommodates Te Araro trampers as long have a meal there. What an amazing kiwi hospitality.. 👍👍👍👍

Such a cool pub! Highly recommend. A real quirky country spot. Friendly staff and the food and drinks were awesome. When next in the area will definitely return. A great fun community vibe that is so hard to find in pubs these days.

We had an amazing meal last night. The eye fillet steak was cooked to perfection. Fish of the day was fresh and yummy. Service friendly and efficient. Nice homely ambionce. A must visit and definitely be dining there again

Looked a bit run down from the outside and when we poked our head in. Our hopes therefore of some good food weren't high. But that turned out to be misplaced - the food was really good, atmosphere was good, and how it looked turned out to be all part of the charm. A great place to eat and chill out with a cold one.

Lovely people with equally beaut food, cafe or dining.Magic old building with lots of character in nice setting.Stopped over while biking through on Link Pathway.....twice!!!

Busy track, but you can choose to get your pack taken to each overnight stop so you don't have to carry it. Yay! 2nd day hardest climb but at the end it's a good feeling.

Fantastic little place, perfect to stop into for lunch after the ferry across from Wellington if you're on your way straight to Nelson.
Great food and drinks available for a really good price.

They gave my husband a choice of Battered Fish or Pan Fried when he ordered at the counter & although he ordered Pan Fried we got Battered. The chips were pale & not crispy & my coffee was only luke warm so the meal was disappointing. There were 2 TV's on ...the one in the small bar was appropriate but the one in the small walk through dining room that absolutely no-one was watching was ridiculous. When I asked very respectfully if it could be turned off the manager turned it down but going by his smart remark he was annoyed.
Even though it had been raining for 3 days flat the fireplace was dead. It would've been wonderful to have had a fire to dry out a bit even though it wasn't cold.
It would have also cosied up the atmosphere greatly. We didn't need a roaring fire but just a few sparks & crackles would have been lovely. This being so we are not in a hurry to go back.

Sorry for the badly timed photo. How to start with this cool little Tavern. The owner and staff are wonderful. Absolutely lovely warm and welcoming. We felt at home right off the bat and like a well seasoned local. The hot coffee and vegan lemon cake was a fantastic little start on a cold wet day. We chilled in the restaurant/bar on the rustic style furnishings. Listen to chil beats before ordering lunch. We got the open steak and chicken sandwich that where fantastic from start to finish. We will absolutely be back especially for the market days and music festivals to come.
Thank you everyone at the Queen Charlotte Tavern for your warm hospitality.

What a delicious dinner. I ordered the pasta of the day and was more than happy with it. The flavor was just perfect and I literally enjoyed every single fork of the pasta. I have been in many places around nz but the Queen charlotte Tavern is so far the best. Price is absolutely fair for the size of the meal.
I highly recommend this place.

Best dinner meal we have had in a long time. Surf and Turf was fantastic.

Delicious food, fresh ingredients, friendly staff, unique building, what more could you ask for? Even if you aren’t traveling through it’s worth the trip from Picton.

Lovely athmosphere mix from locals and backpackers and great, fresh fair priced food.

Cosy atmosphere with great food.

Nice quiet stop on way around top of north. Lovely lunch the other day (great pasta of day for me and toasted panini for the other one!). Went back today and had a pint in front of some live music. Hope the rest of the NYE bash goes well

Classic country pub with friendly staff and excellent country grub.

Rode our bikes here from Momorangi.
Friendly Chef and great atmosphere.
I had the Beef Burger and wife had the whitebait fritter. Beaut meals and lots of shaded areas outside to sit.

I've been here twice now, one year apart. The first time I said, "Great, hearty meal. Hot food. Nothing complex but just what I needed. Drinks were reasonably priced." I wish I could say the same the second time around. Sadly, the welcome we received when eight people showed up at dinner time was hardly hospitable. I would have thought that in summer, with low tourist numbers, eight people showing up to eat would be a boon for any publican. Clearly not in this place. I was disappointed by the lady's continuing attitude towards us the entire evening. If you want to run a pub well, make your customers feel welcome.

Talk about a classic eatery , tavern, so down to earth, service was hardcase experience, you would have to go there to find out what I am talking about the best BLT, the menu was a great selection, they do pub grub as well.as cafe and restaurant styles fish n chips enough for one , nice bacon , fast service, nice cold coruba with a pint glass of ice. Travelling along the way was a bueatiful experience also . Dont miss out and say I sent you , 8237 use the code .

An amazing find! After traveling all day to our lodging, we were tired, cold and hungry. We were very surprised to find The Queen Charlotte Tavern close by on Queen Charlotte Drive as we did not fancy the 30min plus drive back to Picton. The Tavern is an Oasis of everything that's good about NZ and Southern Hospitality: Good Beer, great hosts and totally amazing food!. Totally AWESOME!
J. K.
Great service and very friendly staff. Nice fish and a very good portion. It's a thumbs up for me. The beer wasn't too bad either.

Everything that I love about an out of the way NZ pub: welcoming owner/staff and friendly local people to talk to and a very homey atmosphere. The food was exceptionally stellar. I went back a second time and liked it even more. Don’t drive by this place!

This evening Liz and I enjoyed the best fillet steak meals we've had since working in France many years ago. Cooked to perfection and melt in the mouth tender....really impressed!

This place is a hidden gem. Great food, big serving sizes, good vibes. Went there with a band for one of the queen charlotte sounds concert. Great setup, camping onsite, motel down the road.

The best breakfast on the South Island! The egg Benedict was Delicious! The company was just as great. Such a friendly owner who makes her customers feel like a friend coming over for breakfast. Also met some other lovey people who were eating there.

Let’s start with the positive. Amazing food, and great outdoor setting, very relaxing.
However, the service was just horrendous. No table service can be understood even if weird in such a location, but just not a single smile, rude, and even worse, when you ask something they just tell you “no”. They wouldnt even want to bring us water, we had to carry it ourselves. We asked for ice cubesc we had to negotiate explaining this was for our drinks that we ordered at their restaurant!!! Then we asked for warm water to prepare our baby’s bottle, and they refused... Insane. So great food but will never go back...

A huge thank you to the team at The Queen Charlotte Tavern for the amazing job you did at our wedding recently - providing bar and food service staff in addition to catering for 180 people. Organising a wedding from another country was made easy and stress free with MaryAnn and her team - they were organised, responsive, knowledgeable, and flexible with last minute changes.
The recommendations they provided on the management of food and drinks for the day worked perfectly, with many people commenting on how well this worked e.g starting off with low percent alcohol.
The food was a talking point of the day and continues to be weeks after the wedding. Everyone who attended has commented on how it’s the best food they have had at a wedding - not only delicious but plenty for everyone.
Staff were friendly, attentive and professional yet provided a relaxed enjoyable feel to the day.
Thank you for the huge part you played in ensuring our day ran smoothly, you were an absolute pleasure to work with. You delivered beyond our expectations and we can’t thank you enough for helping to create the perfect day.

Great hospitality in cosy, homely setting with top class yummy, home cooked, ecclectic mix of food and huge mugs of grunty fresh ground coffee and just to cap it off craft beers on tap, this is a must not miss for your Marlborough sounds experience!
J.
Great food! Lovely host... Totally unexpected level of food for The place we assumed it would be; small country pub.
G. H.
Nice place great atmosphere good food but very expensive if you only want a beer.i know that prices are dearer when you are as remote as this place is but $10 for a stubby and $5 for a can of coke I felt was quite high
l. f.
