L.Fantastic food and drink and the service is even better. Fantastic waitresses very attentive and great food favourite suggestions. I would give it 6 stars if I could.
B.Really good food and amazing drinks. But to be honest the highlight of the night was the service. We were taken care by Eleni and she was really lovely. My fiancee is allergic t.o eggs. She only asked if one dish had eggs and Eleni not only checked that dish, she checked the entire menu and even gave me a heads up when it came to choosing the desert. She was also really switched on with regards to toping up our drinks and clearing the table.

T.Food, drinks, and environment is awesome. It’s a shame the service of the manager and some staff brings their rating down. A couple staff were awesome, really one extreme to another. I would come here a lot if the staff were friendlier. Wasn’t happy to see the manager was not wearing a mask at all…
R.Wonderful experience from beginning to end. We were a birthday party of 5 and was seated upstairs for privacy. Excellent and attentive service and only a short wait for our food which was top notch. We were a mix of meat eaters and vegetarians and it was all good. Will be going back soon.

They were able to accommodate one of our guests dietary needs, provide extensive knowledge about the food and drinks, and the wait staff were very friendly and made us feel like nothing was an issue. The Beast Board and the Traditional Margaritas were the absolute highlight. We will be coming back again in the near future
L.Nicely decorated restaurant. Food was good, just a bit too oily for the fried chicken. Food servers were lacking the service charisma. A smile goes a long long way.
A.Really enjoyed the chips and guacamole and felt it was an appropriate portion for the price. I was a little disappointed by the size of the margarita I ordered but the tequila was really tasty. I ordered the cauliflower steak as my main. It was delicious (saucy, tangy, spicy) and priced well. My only complaint was that it was a little too acidic and by the end of it my mouth was sore. It was still mouth watering and good. This meal fulfilled my craving for something salty, tangy, and spicy.

Really busy place too. Among all other great dine-in options on the riverside this is worth visiting place guys.
Really loved the restaurant from start to end of my visit on almost every aspect. And in case you want to try something spicy.... Make sure to ask staff for jalapeno queso and red dragon salsa with crispy fried potatoes.
And for something different and refreshing snack... Marinated seasme cucumber.
Following with delicious Tacos in the main and creative desert selection especially "Lemon Crémeux.

T.Yummy food and drinks and great atmosphere. Spent the whole evening here with friends. Sat outside and we got a great view of a busy night in CHCH. Service started really good but then struggled towards the end (with covid we weren't supposed to order away from our tables) and noticed others had the same issue (trying to get servers attention to make orders). Would still go back again though!

S.Buzzing and lively on a Wednesday night. Even with what looked like a full house, we got seated almost right away without a booking. Ordered a few plates to share and a taco each. The salmon ceviche was so fresh and tangy, with segments of grapefruit, tangelo, pomegranate pieces and pepitas. Potatoes were creamy and indulgent, very satisfying. My beef rib taco was sticky and delicious. Lively fun ambiance and friendly staff.
M.I visited Chiwahwah for the first time a year ago and it had quickly become my favorite to celebrate birthdays and Xmas. The food is always devine, the drinks fabulous (particularly their Tropicana frozen cocktail) and service is always spot on.

Service is great. I went on a Friday night when the place was packed and I still felt like everything was very prompt.
Took two stars away for the underwhelming tacos. I tried three different kinds and none of them were great. The pork one had so much gristle, I couldn't finish it.

A.Very accommodating of my food allergies (we gave several days notice of these, allowing plenty of time for them to have safe options for me). We were part of a large group so I really appreciated the effort they put in to ensure I could enjoy a lovely meal alongside everyone else.

R.OMG SO GOOD! Some of the most delicious Mexican style food I’ve ever eaten and definitely the best frozen margarita I can remember drinking. This place is so good we cancelled plans to go elsewhere in order to come back here! Great location, fun vibe and nice outdoor seating. They’re super busy with good reason so you’ll sometimes have to wait for a table or another round of drinks but the staff are really capable and friendly. The first time we went the ceviche and mogo mogo balls were just outstanding and the tacos were amazing and generously sized as well. The second time we got the chicken taco platter between 2 of us and was both delicious and HUGE - could easily have fed 3-4 people 😂
N.They have some unique tacos and great Mexican standards. The short ribs were cooked perfectly, but the salmon taco in a nori shell was incredible. It was similar to sushi, with salmon, roe, and rice, but the nori was lightly fried, and the seasoning was Mexican, with kimchi as well. I want to go back and try all their modern tacos.

s.We went here for dinner on a busy Saturday night. Even though the place was absolutely PACKED, they still quickly found us a table and served us quickly and efficiently. The service was amazing - the wait staff deserve a lot of credit for their attitudes - friendly, happy, helpful. Food was delicious, especially the beef taco and the guac. I will 100% be back, I loved the experience.

J.I'm not sure if I can write nice enough things about Chiwahwah - best Mexican ever - is that a good start? Probably. Put simply, it's not the conventional four ingredients arranged on a plate, it's gorgeous food served in a great environment with really good staff. Just go, it's likely that you will love it! In the meantime, savour dos tacos through your screen.

We had a large table and ordered the set menu. The food was amazing, everything tasted divine and there was way too much for us all to finish.
Gluten and dairy free people were well looked after. We did let them know about allergies before we arrived and they were well prepared for us.

S.It is a great restaurant, the food that we tried was delicious. We had the lamb platter, the 3 brioche buns, the chicken taco and corn chips to start. The food was brilliant and so tasty. Only thing is the service was slow.... We had dessert and all the plates were still on the table so we had to eat around them.

K.This is one of the places that I take people from outside of Christchurch, to show off how far the city has come from the earthquakes. The staff are friendly and very knowledgeable on the food and drink they serve. Food is incredibly tasty and would highly recommend the fish tacos. Prices are pretty good considering its a pretty expensive area to eat.

T.Took a friend who was visiting from out of town for dinner, would highly recommend the fried chicken to share, found the nori shell tacos just fell apart and seemed more of a gimmick then something you could enjoy. Staff were friendly but felt like we were being pressured to order as quickly as possible, waitress came over to us every 2-3 minutes until we ordered.
J.So stoked to stop in at this place for margaritas. The music was on point, the drink selection was delish and relatively priced. We initially were going to just stop for a drink but saw the tasty tacos come out to other people's tables and were so happy with the drinks we continued to graze well into the evening. It all took me back to my time Puerto vallarta. Coconut margaritas! Yum!

J.I have now visited Chiwahwah twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. Both times the food, service and atmosphere were excellent! The staff are attentive, the food and drinks are delicious and arrive quickly and the overall experience is fantastic. We are already looking forward to our next dining experience here. My only advise is to book well ahead as they are popular and the only niggly thing is they ask if you want chips, guac and salsa when they first seat you,. This seems nice but is quite an expensive starter if you haven't had a chance to check the menu and see the prices yet. Otherwise the place is amazing!

c.Went for a friends birthday on although the food and atmosphere were pretty good, the waitress was a bit snappy which put a bit of a downer on our mood. Waitress was quite choppy and seemed annoyed to serve us with basic tasks such as giving us more water ? It was only a Tuesday night too so we didn't know why we had to feel sorry to ask to be served. Other than that it was a good experience.
Update: we were sitting first right table in the back and waitress was youngish with curly blonde (?) hair tied up. hard to see specifically in the dim lighting. would love to come back again as food was great maybe just another server next time :-)

G.I've eaten here several times in the past year, their menu is a great take on Mexican cuisine and a cool atmosphere in house, if you ask nicely you may even get to sample their wide array of super spicy hot sauces, that's if you want to get adventurous. They have skilled people in the kitchen cooking and behind the bar making drinks , there was a good lad waiting on us when I dined there one time who provided awesome service, I've had 10/10 experience check it out

S.Great lively bar, super good atmosphere and music, awesome interior design. Drinks are well priced, and the location is beautiful. Knocked off a star because two of the three servers that we spoke with were very rude and seemed annoyed that we were there. To be fair though there was a server there who was wonderful and bubbly as well. Maybe just a bad night.

Chiwahwah has only been open a few weeks and we already have our favourites. All the taco's are tasty with the corona fish being a standout and offer excellent value.
We love the vibe with the indoor /outdoor bar, has a true tropical feel especially with all the exotic palms and smiley wait staff. Highly recommend.

Last night I had a friend come down from the north island and he wasn’t wearing a collared shirt. The bouncer was very understanding and helped us out, told him to keep his jacket zipped etc. For that reason I will continue to return and spend my money here 5/5.

K.This restaurant has a vision. Only open for four months they're refining as they go. The food is delicious, exciting, punchy, fresh, flavourful, satisfying... The drinks menu is fun fun fun. I would love to be going back tomorrow. Best Mexican I've had in Christchurch.

It was ok , main problem was the tacos were packed you could barely pick them up and I ended up having to eat it with a fork . It would have been much more enjoyable to eat if I could hold in one hand .

F.Having lived in Mexico, the spelling of this restaurant's name annoyed me a bit... However, I finally got past my bias and patroned it last Saturday night. It was a very busy evening and we had no reservation, but somehow they seated my boyfriend and I in less that 15 minutes (whilst we sipped on some yummy Margaritas at the bar.) The service was fab and the food - what I call Mexican/South American fusion - was utterly delicious! We had a selection of three nibbles; the potatoes, the calamari and the best chips & guac in Christchurch (I don't say this lightly). I was also pleasantly surprised that they cater to my kind (the glutarded), as most dishes are or can be made gluten free. In fact, we're going back tonight for the Carne Asada, as we've heard it's superb.Thanks Chiwahwah!
PS: Vegetables/Salads are called "Verduras" LOL

M.Great location on Oxford Terrace and fun relaxed atmosphere. We had the nachos and two traditional margaritas - excellent choices. We did add some of the Chalupa hot sauce since, like most Mexican restaurants in Christchurch, the nachos needed a little "zip". We've been before and had the chicken tacos, which are also a good choice. Ignore the non-Mexican spelling and think Chihuahua and it won't drive you crazy.

Don't appreciate not being able to make a booking online recently, not being able to contact via phone because they left it on a call for 6 hours so making the trip to find they can't accommodate anyway. December rush is a bubble, service will bring people back in winter.

Not so much! 😢 My friend and I were sitting at the table with menus for at least 15 mins without being even asked if we’d like a drink, the worst bit was two waitresses were standing RIGHT next to our table having a conversation (of at least 5 mins!) as to which tables they each should be taking care of, then when they’d finally finished their chit chat - neither of them turned to us to take a drinks or food order? Was just a bit weird!! Seemed like they were completely uninterested in their paying customers! :(

A.I feel like I am cheating on my previous Mexican restaurant whenever I go here.
Chips, Guac and Salsa: always very quick to come out. Decent serving of chips and there’s a delicious sprinkle they put on them.
Fried Chicken: very similar to another restaurant, but has the addition of a nice sauce to go with it.
Nachos: easily enough for at least 3 people to share. Don’t make the mistake we did and order starters if you are getting this.
Quesadilla: generous fillings and nice to have the option of guac and sour cream on the side.
Mojo Mojo: fried balls of pulled beef. Delicious and great portion for sharing.
