(3.5 star) Waitress was very attending and polite. Always refilling our glasses and asking if we wanted anything. Great customer service! There was a long wait for a quiet-ish night. Our mains took about 50 minutes to arrive after finishing our starters. Presentation was great but unfortunately that was really it. It was a bit overrated for a 'multi award winning' spot. Not the best value for money but overall a good spot for a 'one off' try. Again great service from the wait staff.

My general response after going to a restaurant is that it was really good but let me state that cook n with gas was exceptional ! From the service to the food was definitely one that I would be happy to repeat, a real treat ❤

Went to an early reservation on a Saturday night. Everything was off to a great start, but as business started to pick up, it became evident that they were well under staffed. The entrees were good- mussels and prawns. We both got the pork belly as a main which was beautifully presented but unexceptional and wouldn't recommend or order again. After dinner we ordered drinks- a wine and an Old Fashioned. The "Classic" Old Fashioned was not as one would expect or as described in the menu. When I questioned whether I got the correct drink or not, the server promptly took it back, promised he would remake it, but then clearly just poured the same drink into a shorter glass. No one came to our table to check that we were happy with the new drink or ask for a dessert order. We wanted dessert but decided to leave without ordering. If this were a pub, I'd rate 4/5 stars. Decent feed and good portions. But for "fine dining" it missed the mark. Over-priced for unexceptional food, poor service, and poorly made cocktails. I'll count this as a miss and check out one of Chch's many small eateries close by. You'd do well to spend your money elsewhere.

We had the venison and pork belly. The venison had unusual pairing with beetroot, cauliflower and kumara while the pork belly dish was quite good with accompanying crackling and a bed of potato mash. The prices are $$$ and the food could do with a bit more flavour

Love this place! Really cool vibe and a great bartender - think I remember him from the Darkroom. He is definitely a keeper! Loved the hottties and blankets that are provided makes it all comfortable and enjoyable on these late autumn nights. This place is a real hidden gem 100% recommend.

An amazing and interesting restaurant and bar in the CBD by the Arts Centre. Good service and friendly staff. There lack of interest in acknowledging a large number of quick hits for a featured image was somewhat surprising. Do note is not at all cheap to buy drinks as a large glass of beer and house hardonnay cost $24.50. Nonethe less I recommend heading around the back to the outdoor seating area. Bar meals are available and the wedges with sour cream and sweet chilli sauce was very nice.

Absolutely the best service ever, go there as often as we can, lovely atmosphere and the meals are excellent, love the mussel entre and the steak was cooked to perfection. Nothing is a bother for the maître D, come waiter, barman and food server, he is so professional, lovely old house. Would recommend this restaurant whole heartily , will be back soon.

Went here with a Grab One voucher for our anniversary. We had the mussel and chicken starters. Both was more than enough and very tasting. We loved it. My wife had the steak which was done properly, very tasty and worth it. I had the pork belly. Nice crackling. The fat could have been cooked off a bit more. There was more fat than meat thus hardly tasted the meat. Fantastic desserts as well. They are pricey but worth the visit!

Why have I never been here before!?Ive always heard great reviews but youll have to see for yourself. The service is professional yet casual, they are very accepting of dietry requirements the flood is to die for, awesome cocktails and the beer fridge will keep any beer drinker happy, I counted 36 different flavoured beers and ciders. I think this is my new favourite place in Christchurch.

I've heard good things, and I wasn't disappointed. The food was great, presented nicely and generous portions. Service was excellent, especially from the energetic hirsute gentleman. Although we only had one course and a wine, there was no pressure for us to leave as we sat and chatted for a while. Decor is fascinating and homely at the same time. Prices are a little on the high side for a Christchurch restaurant, but well worth it for what you get (and the service). Final words: Book a table now.

Was looking forward to this evening. Was totally underwhelmed by it. As it's meant to be on the higher end of dining wouldn't expect a wobbly table. Expected small servings. But, No bread with the soup. Partners 'steak' not actually a steak. Nor even seared nicely. My pork belly was ok. Had better at small pubs 🤷🏼‍♀️. Dessert was passable.

Lovely old house pub style, service and dishes were astonish standard! We had signature mussels, pepper squid, bake avocado and buttermilk fried chicken, all really tasty and yummy. Only the spicy pumpkin soup was far far too spicy so only had 2 sips and unable to eat!

Amazing night at cook n with gas for date night! Excellent service from Rahul, He was so helpful, told us heaps about the heritage of the building and was so attentive! The food was soooo good! We got the fried chicken and mussels entree.. literally so delicious! (This is a must order) I refuse to eat mussels any other way now. Our mains were beef and pork! Really big servings and my hubby absolutely loved his beef (and he’s a picky eater) Finally for dessert we had the sticky date pudding. I would come back here just for that it was the perfect dessert! I’d definitely recommend for date night or as a group!

The portions are very generous. We went with the 3 course prefixed menu and it was well worth it. The service was very good and the servers were attentive but also had personality. We had reservations for 7:30 and we finished by 9. This was because we wanted to savor the food and enjoy the company.

The restaurant is a nice old character building. The menu and drink selection isn't extensive but a reasonable selection. The wait staff was friendly and quick to take orders. The starters were very nice. The mains were very average. Nothing particularly wrong with them, just nothing great either. Some of the sides that came with them were good. For the price the food just didn't cut the mustard and the serving sizes were small.

Really great service, couldn't ask for better! Having the door opened for you is fantastic. My wonder/dissapointments were: My Monkfish came out as five bite size pieces and not a piece of fish. It looked like the lady next to us had the same meal with a piece of fish and not bite size pieces like I. I was dissapointed that I didn't have a piece of fish. The steak on our table all had really chewy fat .. BUT the service overrode these kitchen faults and queries.. We eat out enough and 5stars to the wait staff...

I was very much looking forward to coming here as it had been recommended to me. Unfortunately we had to wait a very long time for our meals and when they arrived I did not enjoy most of it. My venison was cooked beautifully but I felt that all the other components of the dish were quite over seasoned. For what you got I definitely think the price was too high. At the least the portion sizes were quite decent though! Would have loved to stay for dessert but by the time we had finished our main it was too late for us to also order a dessert.

Very nice indeed. Nice location with a great bar in the back for some pre post dinner fun. The food here is beyond excellent. Fresh, original mains and nice sharing concept as well. Highly recommended for 2 or families. We went with 3 young kids, they had a great time as well.

Was nice and warm on a winter night when dining at cook n with gas! The staff was welcoming and would recommend the mussels and jalapeno poppers ( made in house) for starters. For mains we had the mix grill and duck a la gas. Meats were perfectly cooked. Good selection of locally crafted beers to match our scrumptious meals. The crepes were delish and a must try for dessert! Great dining atmosphere and had a table near the window to watch the trams go by with the art centre as a backdrop. Looking forward to when Astro bar re opens.

Dined here with a friend last night. What a pleasure. It's not often that I would even consider giving 10/10 as a grade but they deserved nothing less. The service was attentive without being pushy, the food was superb and best of all, in my opinion, despite dining early we were not rushed through so they could seat someone else but spent the entire evening there. We arrived earlier than our booking due to a mix up with the Taxi so went through to the bar, the barman had no problem making the requested cocktail despite it not being on their list. It just seemed to get better from there on in. Every mouthful of both our meals was superb from the amuse bouche to the dessert. As an extra bonus we were recommended a superb Sauvignon Blanc by the waiter and our requested extra short espressos actually were! Only thing I might do differently next time is hide in the corner and actually lick my dessert plate instead of just thinking about it! Thanks guys it was a perfect night. Niki.

Outstanding service. Delicious food of all kinds, but still distinctly Kiwi - coming from a Northern Hemisphere resident, even the lamb is the best I've tried in NZ. And, the beer and wine selection is some of the best of the best...desert wines included. Atmosphere in spades and curious bits all over the place. Top notch. Started pre dinner drinks in the astrolab out the back. Service with a great sense of humour. Went through to the restaurant with our host Steve who was hilarious and made us feel really at home. The food was delicious and the service was brilliant. They even indulged us with our travelling pineapple (a tribute to one of our fallen comrades) by chopping him up and serving him with cherries. Thanks guys for a memorable night whilst we said goodbye to a friend. Can’t recommend these guys enough. (Ask the guys for Black Mussels!!)

Wonderful attentive staff help any engaged diner to navigate their extensive wine selection to find the perfect meal compliment. Kitchen staff are always happy to make requested personalisations of your dish to ensure you thoroughly enjoy your dinner. Food itself is excellent with traditional dishes given an exciting presentation and often an interesting twist. The best quality is indeed the staff who will come to recognise you within your second visit. However, they can be overstretched at times with the layout of the restaurant restricting their sightlines occasionally, making it sometimes difficult to see when you've finished. Either get there early (before 8ish) or try and sit near the bar as it'll fill up quickly after. Bookings on Friday and weekends advisable! On the whole, my favourite restaurant in Christchurch.

Cute little house converted into a restaurant. I had a lovely duck dish with a local wine. It might push the gas metaphor a little hard, but the food and ambiance makes up. The staff were typical of what you expect from New Zealand, that is some of the nicest people you'll ever meet.

The raviloi entree was excellent , complimented by pieces of monkfish . Wine list was not inspiring and we settled for a Lake Chalis Syrah ($50). The choc tort was tasty but G & K thought a tort was more layered than was presented here. Good atmosphere and lovely setting and the 3 - course $60 option reasonable value.
