Reviews of Earl
O.
Hidden away little gem in our city. The staff were really helpful and were extremely knowledgeable on the food that was being served. The interior of the restaurant was very classy and made for a pleasant dining experience. The food was mind blowing. You would take a bite and want to take a moment to just experience it. Would recommend it to anyone!
M.
Very tasty food, neutral and clean decoration, and amazing service. The menu is a bit expensive for the size of the portions but not out of reach either. A nice place to go for a date or something! The side of vegetables was amazing 👍
L.
Beautiful, beautiful food! Lovely feel to the place, with pockets to sit in and catch up with friends. Very professional, helpful staff.
Not a "quick and cheap" lunch place, but definitely a classy casual place to dine and the food matched the price tag. I had Autumn greens with slow cooked lamb and it was incredible! We also tried the artichoke share plate (very nice), and my friends enjoyed the salmon and market fish.
A.
Great flavors. The cavatelli with the smoked ricotta was gorgeous. If that was the last thing I ever ate that would be alright with me. The complimentary focaccia was also so wonderful and the butter served with it had a smoky flavor that really sent it over the edge.
J.
When was the last time you had complimentary sparkling water at dinner? A small but surprising detail that made me smile. Maybe I just need to get out more.
My partner and I have lived in Christchurch central for a year and a half and walked past Earl frequently with always an ever delayed plan to book in for dinner; until we saw it appear on First table. 50% off? You bet! For context if you’re the one who needs to get out more; First Table is a booking service for helping restaurants secure early evening reservation times in exchange for 50% off the food price. In Earl’s case, they also require the purchase of 1 minimum drink per person with exclusions on specials for this offer).
Walking into Earl you’re drawn in by the sweeping curves of the entryway to a pleasant and calm atmosphere. Sitting down at the clean marble table we enjoyed the mentioned sparkling water and a decent selection of gin and tonics. Sadly they didn’t offer ginger for a garnish as it’s a great option for Roku gin, but we’ll see if the waiter really does “steal that idea”. A botanist + cucumber did the job just fine instead.
We chose the melon and prosciutto to accompany the warm house focaccia bread without disappointment, and after a great chat our mains swiftly arrived. I chose the Ribye steak which was juicy, flavour packed, and very filling. My partner went for the market fish (being grouper that night) with a great experience as well.
We tapped out after splitting one of the best lemon tarts I’ve ever had with a crunchy caramelised top and creme chantilly.
In total it came out to be around $90 (which for us was well worth it). However, we did get a shock when the bill initially came to $162 before the discount was applied. We both agreed, it would have been a little much for the experience we received as the mains portions were on the small size. *Even in the opinion of a kiwi not just the American!
A great place we’d recommend for a first table booking. However, you’ll need to decide for yourself if the full price is justified.
L.
Perfect for a date night or brunches over the weekend .
We had the steak and fish lunch menu in the weekend , perfectly seasoned and cooked!!
R.
Fantastic place. Def will be back. Got the chefs choice each for two of us and basically got nice little small versions of the whole menu. Staff were great banter and the music Playlist was dam good. Food was top notch and cocktails were very good. A gin goblet will send you into a great night.
A.
As a person with allergies that are hard to cater for, I am very greatfull for great and tasty food.
The stuff was very nice and understanding!
The ambience is very nice and cosy and the food and wines are simply delicious!
Thank you to all the staff of the Earl for a great night!
A.
It’s fine dinning so be prepared for spending money.
For starters we had octopus and for 22$ which was tasty but a small serve plus the octopus was sliced so finely that it didn’t do justice.
We had fish of the day. This was nothing special. 40$ for groped and 2 mussels. Overpriced 2/5
On the contrary the steak was very lovely and certainly worth the price. (40$) 4/5
Complementary bread..
For dessert had the layered cake. 18$ from memory I think. Was nothing to write about..
Overall 3/5. There r better places to try.
J.
A minimalist yet clean styled restaurant. The staff are very good, great communication, and service was brilliant. The food was delicious and served in a timely manner. If you're after a lovely dining experience from the food, drink, and service, Earl is a winner.
N.
Beautiful lunch, the gnocchi was clearly made in house and was delicious. Service was tremendous. This is a great venue to visit during various covid levels as the tables are quite spaced out, the ceilings are high and there's great ventilation
A.
Earl is the golden child of Christchurch dining. Beautiful food. Whatever you try on the menu you won’t be disappointed.
I highly recommend Eat like an Earl (chefs choice tasting menu).
Cocktails are always delicious. Service is friendly and efficient.
My all time fav for a date night or a catchup with a group of friends.
M.
One of the best dinners we had. Food was amazing. We got the chefs choice and we were not disappointed. We tried so many things that I forgot the names. Service was outstanding. We will be back again soon.(We back for dinner and it was delicious again 😋. It was super busy but this is what great restaurant should be)
L.
The food was fresh and perfectly cooked. The staff were friendly and the restaurant has a magnificent open kitchen. A larger selection of craft beer would be nice but don’t let that put you off the foods made up for it.
c.
Amazing service and delicious food! Would recommend to anyone :)
A.
We tried this place this evening for the first time on a recommendation. The staff were amazing, food was really tasty and well presented. A little bread to start which was a nice touch. A really great place. We will be sure to head back soon.
S.
Great food! pumpkin salad was tasty and side lamb was cooked perfectly! Fish was bit dry but overall it was great dining experience! The lady who serve us is awesome. We’ll definitely be back.
P.
Overall a disappointing experience. We were a table of 4 and ordered the chef's selections so had a range of dishes. No issues with portion size but many dishes had a very smoky quality to them that meant you couldn't taste anything else on the plate or were underseasoned so lacked a simple touch. In one dish the vegetables were very undercooked too and other dishes came out cold or at least not warm.
Service was disappointing too. Apart from bringing out the dishes and explaining what it was, our water was never topped up during the course of the meal and unless we initiated the request for a glass of wine etc, we were never asked if we'd like anything to drink beyond our initial order.
We had a GrabOne so our $300 meal was $150 but even at that price, it was not worth it. I'd have been livid if we were charged $300 for this experience.
W.
All round good evening, good local produce and well prepared and presented. The pasta dishes and the Buffalo mozzarella were the best and the service was okay. Could’ve scored an extra point by not using cracked/chipped plates.
M.
Tasty and fancy food with quality ingredients.
S.
A beautiful meal for four. Service was impeccable and catering to my special dietary needs without any issues. I would highly recommend this restaurant. 👌
M.
Great food! Well presented and tasty dishes with originality. Atmosphere is perfect, very comfortable with lots of light and airy feeling. Love their open kitchen too!
N.
Service could improve a liiiittle bit, space is a little cramped, and food is super delicious.
C.
Absolutely phenomenal meal on the Tuesday chef takeover evening. Beautiful ambience with a open kitchen to watch truely artful cooking. Couldn't recomend more. Highlights include a phenomenal anchovy buttered toast and caprese bruschetta. Must visit in Christchurch.
H.
We visited this place for the first time on the weekend. First impression of the restaurant was clean and bright. Nice open kitchen. Wine list is small but my husband had nice red wine. We ordered chicken parfait as entree, presentation was great. Tastes great as well especially cherry sauce was perfect compliment to fatty parfait. Downsize was portion of chicken parfait was way too much compared to how much crackers we were given. We broke those crackers in tiny pieces to put large amount of parfait on it, otherwise crackers will run out very quickly which happened. We had to eat parfait by itself which is quite rich so we couldn't finish it. It would've been better if just few slices of baguette or something come with it as well as crackers to enjoy, or simply just few more crackers or slightly smaller portion of parfait on the plate to have better portion balance. Then we ordered Stake and fish for our main. Stake looked great, classic modern. Nice jus and cooked perfectly, nothing to fault. My fish was kingfish. Cooked perfectly again, nice char crispy skin, moist meat. Taste and the balance of flavor was good, nice bit of acidity in the soup. I must say though i was bit disappointed about presentation and an portion of my meal for $30 lunch. Photo was my meal after i cut the fish but i haven't eaten anything yet. When I looked at all dishes in review photos and also my husband's or people next to us, they all looked good portion( next table had salad and lamb which had big amount of cucumber salad with beautiful presentation and different elements). My fish had beans and soup, all quite soft, no other texture on the plate which was ok at the begging but hard to continue to eat till the end. To be honest, brownish soup with just a piece of fish on top with bit of chervil sitting in the soup wasn't appealing at all. Flavor was good so i still enjoyed it but i would not order it again. Service person was nice, however, would have been better if she communicated with us throughout our dining. Good amount of parfait was still on the plate and we were contemplating if we should finish it or not, then service person came said "did you finish it" and without actually us saying yes or no, she just took a plate and gone. Bit surprised for the service for this type of restaurant, as this is not a cafe. It would've been nice if she came to our table couple of times to check how we enjoy the meal rather than just bring a food and take it away. So overall, flavor of the meal were very good, timing of service was good, inside decor was nice, but we felt some meal and service didn't quite much to the price for lunch. Will we visit here again, maybe. Will we recommend this place to our friends,, maybe. I probably should try chef's choice as reviews are good for that. but not lunch.
D.
Really tasty European food. Mozzarella was really good and the Brussel sprouts. Service was fast and friendly. Would recommend.
K.
So glad we gave this place a shot at random, both my wife and I really enjoyed our dishes and desserts. The pork cutlet was delicious, and the gnocci was just melt on your mouth! Awesome service form Tom, we were well looked after indeed. We'll be back again soon!!
M.
Purchased the Chefs tasting menu...the best food we have had for a very long time!
D.
A very good meal, lamb rump was medium rare with vegetables, dessert lemon tart and cream, drinks NZ gin and tonic, service was great.
B.
Food was extremely tasty we had a number of dishes and everything was delicious aand service was great
J.
Delicious food, beautiful decor and very professional staff. The drinks are very pricey though
S.
Beautiful place with warm inviting open kitchen, stellar wine list with many available by the glass, exemplary service. Food is divine and the house chips are wow-level.
K.
We had a very enjoyable meal here tonight. Staff are very attentive, friendly and professional. The menu has some interesting options and everyone was happy with their meals. I had the steak which was excellent. Prices are on the higher end but not unreasonable. Definitely worth a visit.
K.
So good! Awesome and friendly staff who made us feel welcomed. Great food. Great place.
n.
Really good food but it comes at a price. I enjoyed lunch there but to be honest, I'm not sure I would go if I was paying full price. Let me be clear, food was great and staff were excellent.
C.
I have dined at Earl twice now and on both occasions I have been blown away by the quality of the food. Every dish is carefully crafted and balanced to perfection. One of the best dining experiences in Christchurch for sure.
S.
Probably the best eating out surprise we've had for a while. Fab menu, service and cooking. I can't recommend highly enough.
D.
Portions were tiny. Had 3 courses. Still hungry. Food was generally well cooked, prawns were over done, but the rest were cooked perfectly. Imo over priced for the quantity and quality. Alot of weird sauces with interesting textures (Not my thing) and wasn't impressed paying the same price for a glass of wine as a cocktail? The service was great though, every plate/glass cleared in a timely fashion, noticed when glasses were empty and food was served promptly.
S.
Eat like an Earl was out of this world. Food and service incredible. Definitely one we will return to.
L.
What a wonderful restaurant.we went as a group of four ladies for a birthday on a Tuesday.the place was pumping.friendliest service ever.and delicious food.!
We will be back
S.
Had the chef’s choice and could not fault a single plate. Very delicious. Service and ambiance were great. Yes, it costs money, but sometimes you want to splash out and enjoy great food with some nice company. Thanks!
R.
We really enjoyed the ambiance, good wines and great food. Highly recommended. We will be back soon.
A.
Fab service and the food was amazing! A steal for value if your using GrabOne or first table
P.
Classy dining experience with southern European ambiance and unctuous plates of food.
L.
Food is of both high quality in presentation and taste. Recommended.
P.
Food was beautiful, service great, nice space with open views to the kitchen.
T.
Visited Earl on a Saturday night. Food was very good although the selection for mains were very limited (Salmon or Steak) and also Duck to share between two. Good selection of entrees. Very limited Dessert menu (2 or 3 options). Modern restaurant with open view kitchen. Paid parking within 200m. Excellent service. Excellent European Red wine list by the glass.
Z.
Impressive open kitchen lay out, attentive customer services, had a lunch date with a friend and liked what we experienced, hopefully to visit again for dinner and try out the extensive wine list they are proud of.
Y.
Awesome creative menu . Loved the stuff being happy, engaging and friendly. We spend great time
R.
Amazing food. Real foodies place. We went on Friday night and it was packed. Very noisy. Had a great night.
k.
Fabulous place nice staff food so good steak amazing lemon tart my favorite
B.
Great service and food. Perfect spot for lunch in the cbd.
M.
Did I like this place? No. Did I love this place... Yes, absolutely!!! The food was divine. Our group of 5 did the Chef's Choice. Everything was cooked with care & love. We had a great time colparing our favourites. The manager was a lovely personality and kept us well-looked after. The decor felt fresh. Open kitchen concept was neat. We did wish there was a little sweet dish to finish night included in the Chef's Choice. Earl was delightful. Great for couples or groups.
S.
Extremely impressed, great Tuesday pasta and wine night. Food was delicious and staff were awesome.
S.
Very happy with every dish in our dinner tonight: prawn, beef short rib, rybeye and fish. So tasty. And super friendly staff. Will come back for sure.
L.
Best lunch I've had for a long time. Service was terrific (thx Charlie), food was delicious and wine list was one of the most interesting I've seen at a Christchurch restaurant. Great way to spend a sunny autumn afternoon.
A.
This restaurant is well worth a visit. The staff were very attentive and very welcoming. We chose the Chefs Choice for our meal and they chose perfectly for us, everything was absolutely delicious and well presented! You won't leave hungry!
K.
Had the tasting menu. Was fantastic. Will come back for sure.
s.
Great location, ample off street parking, bookings required. Lunch and dinner serves different menu. Like their staff with great and the right level of caring and attentiveness. Atmosphere is great too, easy menu to go through, great menu layout, serves sparkling water as default. Clean and tidy. Steak was amazing! Precut and made to medium rare. Cocktails and mocktails are nice too. Tables could be more distant for better privacy and protect people from covid19.
T.
We booked it before we came and it was worth it. Good food and good drink selection. Metal straws! Love the open design of this restaurant. The service is good, so I will definitely come back.
B.
Had a great meal here tonight.
Lovely clean, bright interior and a simple Scandinavian style set up allowed for a relaxed, while not being casual, dining experience.
Staff were friendly and helpful. Wife had a gin and tonic with grapefruit and mint which were a perfect match of flavours and I had the wonderfully bubbly staff pick me out a wine - which was an absolute perfect accompaniment to the meal (I regret not finding out what the wine was so I can get it again!).
The food was just as good. The menu is based on a shared approach to dining. Delicate, lighter balanced flavours with clear traditional influences. In my opinion, this is as good as it gets with "modern" European / Australasian foods. We had the fish skewer, shellfish (in broth) and the duck. I'm hard pressed to pick my favourite.
This was a fantastic way to end our last night in New Zealand. Will definitely be back again.
A.
We had the most incredible dinner at Earl, such delicious food and wonderful waiting staff! I had the special pasta which was beyond delicious and my partner had a steak which was perfectly cooked and juicy. We had the friendliest and perfectly attentive people waiting on us. It was our favourite meal in Christchurch and would recommend to everyone!
S.
Awesome atmosphere, great food and excellent service. Add to your must do / support local / romantic meal lists!
M.
I don't like giving middle of the road ratings, but I like to be honest. I went to Earl with a group, the layout was fairly basic, the lady who was serving our tables was an absolute delight, couldn't fault her, but unfortunately I really didn't enjoy the food or the cocktails. But thats just me, you go and decide for yourself...different food different night and it could be great 😊
S.
Great atmosphere. Friendly staff. Great looking and tasting food. Portion size was perfect for us, however, might be a bit small for some. A gem for Christchurch.
E.
We were not sure about this restaurant when we walked in. It was early and quiet and did not seem like much. By the end of the meal however, we were converts. The food was great, the wines were very good which we tried even at lunch and it was completely full before we finished which is usually a good sign. The salad I had with the lamb (protein) add on was very well prepared and delicious and the dessert was fabulous. Well worth a stop. Right in town and with very nice people.
J.
Pasta and wine night every Tuesday at 25 dollars each. Couldn't fault it ! The service was great and the food had that comforting home cooked quality. We will be back like every other Tuesday!
D.
Thoroughly enjoyed my night out. The food was surprisingly yummy. You know, like I want to lick the sauce and juices off the plate delicious. Which is one of the reasons I have given 4 star because another piece of the delicious bread they serve could have been used to wipe up the sauce and juices. Service was on par.
F.
Great food and innovative cuisine but the service could be a lot better! Our main waiter was fabulous and knew so much about the food and the wines... but both the host and the junior servers were very cold, quiet and not very confident. Once they get all their staff up to scratch it's going to be the entire package!
C.
Very nice food and great service! Highly recommend 😊
Y.
Experience had been pleasant and the atmosphere is amazing. Wonderful concept with open kitchen setting. Great wine selections and customer service.
E.
Buzzing - very noisy and chaotic, service was rather slow, if you like your beers, don't bother. Otherwise the set Tues menu duck pasta was really lovely.
B.
An absolute gem in the heart of Christchurch. A refreshing restaurant that’s serves quality food with even better service. The waitstaff will remember you and go out of their way to give you a personalised experience. One of my favourite places in Christchurch and I always recommend them!
f.
Amazingly accommodating folk ~ happy to help and adjust menu options 😋 food delivery quick and efficient, great that you can see the food being prepared. The use of fresh, local foods is a bonus. Staff super helpful and friendly. Certainly go to Earl, it is worthwhile and cost effective ~ always a bonus 😉
B.
My wife and I had a great meal
Here with our friends. We “ate like an Earl” and all the food was delicious with no regrets.
The other gem was the “pick’n’mix” gin menu, lots of fun
h.
Lovely place, menu was confusing was nice to try but wouldnt rush back in a hurry. This salmon starter was $4 .... finger to show how small it was...
h.
Great food and custmer service. I would love to go back!
R.
I've been here at least 3 times in the last month, and couldn't recommend it enough. Great food (they can make your pasta vegan on request), great wine, great atmosphere, the service is lovely, and the bread is TO DIE FOR. The perfect addition for Christchurch!
G.
There were 6 of us & we had the 'Dine like an Earl's. Fantastic, it allows you to taste many of their dishes, which were all delicious. Great night
I.
A very pleasant bistro restaurant, with excellent, conscientious staff & a kitchen team you can openly watch show their skills & teamwork with great interest. Good food & an extensive wine list I would recommend to anyone.
G.
A first time visit found staff excellent, friendly, and efficient. Interesting food options did take some thinking about. Quite expensive starter bites
C.
One of the best meals I've had in Christchurch. Gorgeous setting and unobtrusive staff, with an amazing wine list
R.
Wow, best restaurant I've been to in a while. Great ambience professional yet not stuffy service, nice decor, but.. . The food is amazing. Fresh, good flavours, nice size portions. Highly recommend The Earl, and Sam is fabulous too.
L.
Not a bad place to dine, bit more on the expensive side but the flavours are really good. Complimentary bread is actually delicious! Chips were great and mains not bad either. Only thing I would suggest is to ask customers if they want sparkling water before automatically serving
C.
I am full of praise for Earl and the wonderful restaurant atmosphere, elegant modern food and service.
C.
"Winner winner no gnocchi in my dinner!" I would like to review my rating (my friends did this on my phone). Ok, food was not what we expected, however the manager who waited our tables was very apologetic for any and all errors on the night and went out of his way to rectify this. So although it wasn't my best eating experience, great response from the manager and also, don't we all have bad days! Everyone I have spoken too about Earl have said nothing but good reviews, so pls guys, don't let my idiot friends put you down, keeping it real 😉
C.
Great food. Friendly efficient service. Expensive but I suspect that could be because of the wine my companions ordered. Lots of flat hard surfaces makes the dining areas very noisy though. Hard to hear other people at the same table.
R.
Food was delicious, service great, will be back for sure!
A.
First visit and sorry we waited so long, the ambience, service and efficiency were all spot on. For a Tuesday in midwinter, it was busy too, great sign and recommendation. Hors d'oeuvres $4 each a great idea to start followed by a couple if sharing dishes and 4 mains plenty for 4. Prices pretty reasonable too, ever changing wine specials and good selection by the glass. Complimentary sparkling water and bread for the table, uncommon in my experience what's not to like! Thanks to all at Earl tonight
L.
Amazing food and fabulous staff. Recommend.
R.
This is my new favourite place. This staff were so friendly, and I can’t remember the last time I had food this good. Got the $60 “eat like and Earl” option which was more than enough food but perfect because we got a taste of everything. Just gutted we didn’t have room for dessert this time x
s.
Great place for a drink and a bite to eat. I can't wait to go back.
M.
I cannot rave about Earl enough! They've found a way to make fine dining affordable with small plates so you can try a starter and main and dessert without breaking the bank. The food is locally sourced with a phenomenal gin selection. The staff were wonderful and the restaurant is designed so that you can hear your dining companion without yelling and so that you don't have the awkward experience of overhearing everyone else. This would be the best dining experience I've had in Christchurch and is well worth a visit.
K.
Food and wine was great. Service below average. Had to ask for menus, had to ask if we could order drinks, food, then had to order dessert when mains arrived as time was ticking on.
M.
The service ia good, the food is good. Neither amazing, but I did enjoy it. Prices are at the top end of what it's worth, but not terrible.
G.
We had the best meal for a long time.we started with breads with smoked butter, meat balls then mozzarella with herbs and lemon spread on bruschetta.our main was steak perfectly cooked and then affogato.every course was amazing.busy place but great service anyway.
We will definately go again. The prices were average and nice atmosphere.
T.
We had a tough day of traveling only to find our hotel was going to be very disappointing.
The high-point of the day was finding this restaurant. It was a fine dining experience with great food and wonderful service.
Thanks for saving the day!
C.
Loved everything!! Stunning cocktails, enjoyable service and lovely food. Couldnt ask for more.
C.
“Market Fish” - sauce was yum 😋 sauce could be added on top of the fish for sucking the flavour to it. It was two little pieces of fish with few baby carrots. The portion wasn’t really enough for a person. could have add some more carrots that would be worth for money. Recommend for “English type fish lover with a small tummy”
M.
Friendly welcoming staff, comfortable bar stools and a pleasant selection of gins to enjoy before enjoying beautiful food and well matched wine - and no loud music.
M.
Good food, great staff, nice drinks.
We got the chefs choice, lots of different foods, for just 65 pp, recommend 👍👍
T.
Enjoyed a lovely meal with excellent salads especially the cauliflower dish. The fish socca was tasty but the portion amount was very disappointing. Service was attentive.
T.
Can't get enough of this place! Easily our favorite place to dine in the city. Beautiful fit out, classy but yet casual and comfortable. Food and service is always excellent.
D.
Friendly service, lovely surroundings. Very tender, succulent lamb. We left feeling full and satisfied. Highly recommend.
P.
Lovely place.. loved the ambience and food. Staff were really friendly and helpful.. would love it if the menus had more vegetarian options. 🙂
J.

A great new addition to Chch. Incredible food, and a great variety of flavours and sizes (sharing, mains, hors d oeuvres). Great ambience and location, and fantastic service. Hope to be back again soon!
J.
Really great food, simple yet perfectly prepared. Interesting ambiance with the dining area having full view of the nicely laid out kitchen
M.
Outstanding service and food and ambience. Can't wait to go back. The small plate tapa dishes are extraordinary value and delicious!
S.
Great food. Hour wait for a table we'd booked on account of some entitled boomers having their dessert not so good though
A.
Dinner at this place is always a treat! The staff, the decor, the food, everything is just fantastic.
j.
Good food, good service, good ambience, but noisy. When will restaurant designers learn to use noise reducing surfaces?
A.
Great food and we thought it was good value for the quality. Restaurant interior felt light and open. We'll be back.
V.
Food was great, very tasty. However service a little slow and some at our table had finished their main before we got ours.
A.
We chose trust the chef. Amazing food that just kept on coming!
