This is my second time @ Kinji. The restaurant is very busy. Recommended people to reserving a table. I came here around 5.15pm and the restaurant was running full quickly, but the service was fast. Very enjoy my meal and the portion is quite big. It can share for 2-3 people. Fish is very fresh and the price is reasonable. Love everything here.💛

A genuinely amazing restaurant with many dishes you can't find anywhere else in Christchurch. Seafood in particular is always incredibly fresh and flavours are incredible. Chef Kinji truly knows what he's doing and I recommend just choosing from the specials (updated often).

The restaurant is located on the outskirts of the Central Business District. Had sashimi and sushi, fresh and delicious-the food is cheap by international standards. The service is prompt and very welcoming. The food is great, this is a must if you are in Christchurch. You won't regret it.

I wanted to try this place for a while and I finally did recently. Well... What to say... You must come over here that you already had dinner... The dishes are pretty tiny and there is no way they can make you full. The service is very nice, we liked it, but if you consider the fact we went we had already eaten and ended up spending $60 each and being still hungry, maybe the place is a bit overpriced $$$. The food is pretty good, especially considering they have a lot of fish and this is New Zealand, but with the amount of food they serve you per dish and the price, I cannot really give over 3 star.

Best authentic Japanese restaurant in New Zealand. Everything we ordered was fresh and full of umami flavor. Really reasonably priced for the quality of products. We had amazing fresh bamboo and their salmon wings were fried to perfection. Definitely a fan of the chef for his creative interesting menu. Will be back. Very popular place.

Having traveled around the South Island so many times and tried so many Japanese food around here, Kinji is definitely a restaurant that will resonate with the Japs. We ordered the Lotus Roots Chips, Sesame Seaweed Salad, Assorted Nigiri Sushi, K.F.C, Deep Fried Crumbed Pork, and the Beef Sukiyaki Hot Pot. Lotus Roots Chips and Salad were alright, nothing really to shout home about. I kinda expected the Lotus Roots Chips to have more flavouring but it was just literal fried lotus roots with salt. The salad was pretty decent. K.F.C and the fried pork were extremely good though! If I had to choose one I'd take K.F.C over the pork any day. The sushi were good, although the tamago wasn't very fresh. Unagi and salmon were okay. Beef sukiyaki was the best, but we all wished the beef slices were a little thicker. The staff here were the star of the show. They were all extremely polite and accommodating. We didn't know this place would be needing a booking, but they tried to accommodate us and we were very thankful for that! Good going guys! If you ever want to visit, call to book ahead!

Absolutely one of the best Japanese Restaurants around. Food was high quality and fresh. Booking is recommended. Although serving size maybe a bit small for some, I certainly enjoyed my Dinner Bento.

Great as always. The greatest part of Kinji Japanese Restaurant is it serves specials that are almost never served in NZ. For example last night they have cod liver and Jack Mackerel sashimi. Jack Mackerel is an inexpensive fish but requires ultimate freshness to be good for sashimi. Needless to say Kinji serves that beautifully.

I really wish I was a local because whenever I am in town and visit Kinji, the service and food are superb. Really well looked after here and a great variety of food on offer plus regularly updated specials. Convivial, intimate atmosphere, definitely book a day or two ahead.

Great food. Sushi all tasted pretty fresh, roll was tasty and the miso was good. Food was fairly quick on coming out, miso first, and the sake I had was cold and tasty for 20 bucks. Others ordered chicken and a bento box and they all said it was delicious. Would come back here for sure.

Amazing authentic Japanese restaurant, super friendly staff who greets you in Japanese when you enter the door, that was really cool. We had rice cake, lamb, wagyu beef and blue cod with shitake tempura. All the dishes were perfect! I would skip the lotus chips. Great choice of sake, try the plum wine for desert - yum! Festival of flavors and Japanese experience. The place is packed, so better make an online reservation, the manager Miyu is very responsive and extremely nice.

Most authentic Japanese cuisine. I have lost count how many times I have visited Kinji, but everytime the service is incredible and the staff are very friendly. Most importantly however, the food is fresh and cooked to perfection.

Kinji is the best restaurant in Christchurch, Japanese or otherwise, in my opinion. Consistently impeccable in terms of food and service. I've dined there at least a dozen times now and I've never once failed to be incredibly impressed. As the plates arrive it's immediately apparent that a great deal of love and care has gone into the presentation and flavor of each and every dish. The wait staff are effusive in their care of you, but not overly so. The prices are very reasonable given the extremely high quality of the experience. You'll never be disappointed choosing Kinji.

We went there on our last day in Christchurch. We weren't expecting much of a small Japanese restaurant near our Airbnb but it blew us away. The staff were lovely, the food was delicious with interesting flavours and the sashimi was fresh. I would recommend the seafood and porcini soup but I imagine everything on this menu is a delight.

Delicious food and excellent service. We ordered a number of mains as well as some starters and would recommend doing it this way. The dishes came out one by one, allowing us all to try them, and the staff were very accommodating, allowing us to add another few dishes to our order with minimal delays. I've been to Kinji a number of times and it is one of those places thay never really changes, however, it doesn't need to as it is consistently a great place to go. All the staff greet you when you enter (bookings are essential here!) so you feel very welcome. It is quite small so you are never waiting for service as someone is always on hand. The food and sake selection is amazing and it is definitely the kind of place where you want to order a few different things so that you can try it all. I highly recommend this place!

AMAZING quality!!! It's SO hard to find good quality Japanese food around Christchurch. After my partner and I left Japan where we lived for a few years, we craved authentic Japanese food. Visited this restaurant a few times recently during a business trip. It is pricey but the dining experience has been great every time. Service is really good and the quality of the food fantastic. Suggest the house sake, which is a really nice medium sweet/dry sake. I had the Sashimi platter, Gyozas, Yakiniku Beef, Fried Takoyaki and KFC (Kinji Fried Chicken). Everything super fresh and tasty! Will definitely go back!

No offence to people living in this beautiful city of Christchurch but with a population of around 400k, I thought it must be easy to impress a small population. Well well well. I had to reassess my opinion after picking my jaw off the table after trying the first 2 dishes. The place was packed on a Monday night with a constant stream of people coming in while we ate. Service was very good but the food was amazing. I'm looking forward to coming here again when we're back in town in a couple of weeks so we can work through the rest of the menu.

It was our first time to Kinji and we were not disappointed even after harbouring high expectations post the glowing reviews. The staff were attentive, but the food was simply divine. We had the wasabi octopus (two serves because the first was so good), karaage chicken, lamb tataki, salmon aburi nigiri and chawanmushi. Everything was perfect but the salmon was a standout - it melted in your mouth and evoked the same response as having a tuna otoro nigiri at Tsukiji market where the world just stops moving for two seconds. And we were seated in between two separate Japanese families - so even if we didn't, they must know what they're doing.

To start, the service was great and they accommodated us without a reservation quite quickly. We ordered udon and miso soups, which were tasty and fresh. Then we went for the nigiri assortment (10 piece) which was so good we ended up ordering 3 of them! Each piece was delightful and well-crafted, and you could sense it was made by experienced hands. We finished with a creme brulee, which was a perfect finish. Highly recommended!

But on paying for our individual meals etc female staff member with glasses on the register tried to bully myself and another colleague to pay for drinks etc of other colleague's. Same staff member told our booked in colleague who had arrived late due to jet lag restaurant had no seat for her.. rude and offensive that young woman her boss told her to let it go more than once. Had the ordasity to tell me to be honest when it was not my bill. It baffles me as to how her bad management of orders is the other customer responsibility???? I have been reluctant to visit any Japanese restaurant in Christchurch, as there are too many average venues with uninteresting run of mill menu , often overpriced and under portioned. Kinji changed it. It was a great last minute visit. Sashimi came back to my dine out dinner options . Fresh and a good line up of fish was a promising start, NOT just the same old boring snapper, salmon and tuna trio. Thank Kinji for delivering what other fish Christchurch fisheries and shoreline has to offer. good to find classic dishes like Wasabi octupos, tempura softshell crabs and beef sukiyaku done well and in style. reasonable price was a bonus too. also loved the JUICY scallops miso gratin. suspect they were Canadian ones , but that didnt matter when they tasted as good as they did.
