Reviews of Maharaja
J.
Monthly catch up with friend. Both remarked this was the best food we have had. The mango Lassi was too die for. Maharaja Platter for starters, followed by goat curry and chicken korma. Great service. Stylish interior.
a.
Very Good food, lovely staff ,excellent service and nice atmosphere. It was our anniversary and really like the piece of cake ,thank you so much.
M.
Enjoyed food and service. The staff was very friendly and they took care of my dietary requirements. Will definitely go back there.
S.
We celebrated my sons 18th birthday here. It was our first time dining at Maharaja. Amazing service , beautiful food and fabulous decor . My son was surprised with a slice of chocolate cake served on board with happy birthday written in chocolate. Can’t wait to go back
J.
Good food😋, lovely staff and nice atmosphere. Definitely can recommend...
M.
Exquisite flavours and a very relaxing atmosphere. This is quite possibly the best place to have lunch on a lazy Saturday. To add to the ambience, the flavours that I tasted surpassed my expectations. If you are someone who wants to try hotter dishes, definitely give Maharaja a go.
D.
Very Good food. Service was excellent. Found a new favourite indian restaurant.
T.
Outstanding curry and friendly service.
Having recently moved into the area we've had take away from here a few times now. Each time we've been impressed. On our last order Menu Log dropped the ball but a quick call to the restaurant and they sorted it for us, couldn't rate them higher.
Looking forward to dining in sometime in the near future.
J.
Best Indian Resturant in Christchurch. Amazing service, very good quality seating/environment, seems like a nice cosy place, great staff, Great food. Would defiantly recommend and come again. Also from my observations the takeaway is very efficient and fast. Very good resturant.
m.
We went there last night really enjoyed our meal food so fresh & yummy & fantastic service, great spaced out seating with lovely decor, we will be back.
L.
A hidden gem, we barely noticed it driving past because it looks like a house but when you look properly it is beautifully setup outside and in, awesome helpful waiter and extremely yummy food at an awesome price, highly recommended. All 5 of us (in Christchurch for one night from auckland) were satisfied, full and happy 😊
D.
Amazing food & very nice people who couldn't do enough for us. Very relaxing astomphere & we felt very comfortable in such lovely surroundings.
E.
Wonderful place! Meal/foood was delicious. Was busy, but they were super efficient at getting the food out in a timely manner, and apologised when it was taking a little longer. We had a birthday dinner, they were more than happy to look after the cake and bring it out after our meal. Even gave the birthday boy (21st) a complimentary tequila shot, which was absolutely lovely of them.
C.
I had ordered from this restaurant and had an issue with the food. The manager Gagan was very polite and helpful. The lamb samoosa is the best in Christchurch, full of flavor and fresh. The tandoori chicken is very flavourful. The customer service is good and this restaurant values its customers and feedback.Well done on addressing my complaint.Happy customer
J.
The service is a bit hit and miss sometime, although the staff are lovely. What makes this place shine is the food. If you're looking for the tastiest most enjoyable authentic Indian food in Christchurch... this is the place to go. Reasonably priced, pleasant atmosphere and did I say the food is amazing? Highly recommended.
P.
One of best place for food lovers.. guy at the counter very humble we had great time at maharaja’s restaurant.
G.
The food is fantastic nice fresh the prawn dish is really good we'll worth getting nice friendly staff enjoyed it
M.
Must try the butter tikka masala was amazing and to top it off had the jalapeño and cheese naan which was the best naan I've have ever had. Will be recommending to friends and will 100% be back next time I'm down thanks guys
E.
Absolutely outstanding. Impeccable service and amazing flavor.
J.
Best Indian in Christchurch. Lovely service, amazing food. You won't be disappointed.
L.
This is definitely the best Indian meal I have had…and I’ve had a lot, and in lots of different countries…..this is the best of the best. Can thoroughly recommend - you will not be disappointed. Reasonable prices as well, very hard to beat!!
N.
As soon as you walk in to the place, you get hit with the aromas that make your tummy rumble and your mouth water at the same time. Ordered a tandoori platter to go with the butter tikka masala and garlic naan bread. When the food came out, I was pleasantly surprised with the creative presentation of the food which by the end of the meal had satisfied my hunger pains. Good selection of wines. Will be returning for more.
D.
Exceptionally good Indian food. My favorite Indian restaurant in the world, actually. The staff have character and great personalities. I like ordering the "Indian hot" versions of the meals and the team sometimes try to talk me out of ordering them but i love them and keep ordering them anyway. They have a good range on mild to extra spicy options. The atmosphere is not noisy which is great of you want to converse with each other (or are older). Excellent wine and bear options too.
M.
I visited last weekend with a friend and I cannot recommend this place enough. Drinks were delicious, the food is outstanding and the staff were so welcoming and friendly it made us feel like home. We'll be definitely coming back!
t.
Very impressed, lovely food, good service and best of all, waiting staff were very attentive but not intrusive. 5 stars
S.
Great food. Service was excellent. Best Indian restaurant in chch!!
N.
Outstanding flavours! The staff can’t be more accommodating and friendly. The atmosphere is super down to earth but at the same time it transports you to a different country. The food is so delicious. I recommend it with no doubt!
F.
In a restaurant its very important that they serve good food. But, if the service is not good then that restaurant looses its appeal.
Maharaja not only served good food but their service was exceptional!!!
Every staff that we dealt with from the time we called to book till we left, has gone out of their way to cater to us. They were polite, courteous, responded to our funny talks with equal witty answers. My hats off to all of them.
R.
The restaurant had great ambience, we dined in as a massive group and they accommodated us in a private dining area with a massive table so we could all sit around and talk to everyone. Food was really delicious and rich, just what we needed after running around all day. Service was very friendly and prompt. Overall great experience and would love to visit again. Thanks for hosting us!
P.
Lovely restaurant. The curries are quite tasty and the staff are very friendly and welcoming! Would love to revisit and try a few more dishes. 😊
T.
Impeccable customer service and amazing food. Fantastic Indian Food experience
Z.
Amazing service. Much appreciated efforts for customer satisfaction. Food was amazing! There was not a single item I did not relish! Beautiful ambience as well. For customised ambiences and services, just request at the counter and they do their best. Best Indian Vegetarian and Non-vegetarian restaurant in Christchurch, I must say.
V.
The lunch special is divine. $20NZD for 3 curries, naan, dessert and toppings 😍
J.
We enjoy eating here very much. Great food, outstanding service.
A.
One of my favorite, if not my favorite, Indian restaurants in Christchurch. I've not been to them all but I'm working at it.
Tonight I had the buttered chicken masala, I never knew this combination existed, it was perfect. I asked for medium spice and it was a little mild for me. But that is my mistake not theirs, I know Kiwis shy away from spicy foods and I should have asked for hot.
The service was excellent, friendly and attentive. The meal was presented well and was everything I hoped for.
If you're in the area, stop in and have a nice meal, you won't be disappointed.
J.
This place is one of my favourites highly recommended.
A.
Amazing food and amazing staff! We can not wait to go back and try some more delicious dishes. The staff 100% make this place perfect. The best Indian restaurant I have visited.
A.
Fantastic, authentic Indian food with a modern creation that is a benchmark in Christchurch. It won't ever be your mum's food, but this is about as close as it gets.
J.
The Best Indian restaurant in Christchurch!!
From personalised service through to top notch flavour, this place is the epitome of Indian cuisine. If you haven’t tried it already, I recommend you have your next ‘dine in experience’ here. You will be relishing the decadence for weeks to come! Celebrating 15 years of dinning at Maharaja 👌🎉
J.
Dropped in for lunch and very impressed with the Maharaja. Great service and delicious food. The lunch Thali special was incredible value. Will definitely be back.
S.
Butter chicken is good, roti is great, but we got Naan which was burned. I wondered why Chef packed this? He could have made another one.
Thanks for your reply.
That’s fine, we are not from Christchurch, but will be back when we visit Christchurch.
K.
First time for me, loved the food, however there were 14 of us and the dining area was a bit cramped. The staff were very friendly and helpful food was delicious and plentiful. Would recommend this place if you want a good Indian meal.
S.
We had an awesome time there with avery large group and the service was world class!!! Everyone of us enjoyed the evening, nothing was too much for the staff!! Very highly recommended! Thank you guys, have a great happy new year and we will return soon.
R.
Although the entrees and curries where very tasty, the service was very slow even though it was quite a slow night. If you want a good curry go to India and it would be quicker.
O.
The food was fantastic. Top Indian restaurant, we all had great meals, staff we’re friendly and espresso cocktails were delicious. Will definitely return.
N.
Finding authentic Indian food in NZ is difficult at the best of times. I live in Auckland and travel for work so usually don’t have the time for long, drawn out meals. So I definitely was not expecting to find a gem like Maharaja in Christchurch of all places. I got my meal on UberEats, and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed every delicious morsel. Amazing flavor, simply perfect. I think I’ve found my new favorite takeaway place when I’m down there again for work. Keep up the good work!
W.
We ordered a takeaway during the Covid 19 lockdown. It arrived right on time and piping hot. We voted it one of the best Indian meals we've tried. I particularly enjoyed choosing from a large selection of vegetarian meals, some of these quite innovative. The dhal is a favourite too, and the sauces on all meals fresh, well-balanced, in fact outstanding. Looking forward to dining in soon.
k.
Have been going to eat at Maharaja every time I go to Christchurch. Best indian food I have had and the service is just fantastic. Chefs and staff really go out of their way to make sure you have a great night and dining experience. Highly recommend it!!!
N.
Service was excellent, food was excellent. I've only ever written one other review, so it takes a great customer experience to get me to write one, and Maharaja succeeded! Can't wait to go back.
L.
Thoroughly enjoyable dinner. Nice building, warm on cool night. Food was lovely. The special chili chicken was particularly good
Good portion size so can't comment on desserts. Kingfisher on tap is a good bonus..
M.
Three of us dined at the Maharaja last night. Booking by phone was easy and our table was ready on arrival. It was a cold night but the dining room has gas fires and heatpumps so nice and warm. Service was prompt and attentive and the food delicious. We ordered an entree, naan bread and main and even though we tried our best we could not consume it all and took a doggy bag home for lunch the next day. Friends recommended the Maharaja to us and we were not disappointed
s.
The staff were amazing tonight. Food fabulous as always. Thanks for putting g up with all our tricky dietary requests too. We will be back.
D.
Excellent goat madras. All 4 of us really enjoyed our meals. We meet friends there once or twice a year and have done for a number of years and are never disappointed.
G.
Very nice meal. Great service very attentive I scoffed my dinner it was so yum I didn't get a picture! I'll take a pic when I there next.
P.
Very good food and service. Pleasant experience all round. I recommend this restaurant 👌.
s.
One of the best Indian restaurants in Christchurch. If you are wanting to taste authentic Indian food, so this is the place for you.
I have always got satisfied with the taste and quality of the food.
J.
Excellent food and great quality. The service was also fantastic. Highly recommended.

I wish I had reviewed for the very first time when I visited Maharaja. It would have been 5 stars. I literally loved the Goat Biryani and my wife, who is a very fussy about her food, still loved the malai kofta she had. Since that day we never had the same quality and taste in food. This time, we visited on Saturday the 30/11, but the level of disappointment was at its height. I loved Tandoori Chicken, but we ordered cheesy onion bhajji which initially came out plain then when asked, the same was topped up with cheese which ruined the taste. The we ordered our mains which toke more than 45 minutes. Our little daughter was getting restless hence we ended up in takeaway. We ordered chicken tikka masala, malai kofta, veg biryani and goat biryani. The chicken tikka masala was ordered because it said “chefs special” but Very dissapointing to have chiken in a tomato curry. I did not have the vegetarian meal but as per my wife, the malai kofta was no where near to what we have had yesterday. The kitchen was busy because a large table dining in. I have been a hospitality since last 11 years and as per my experience, bookings beyond the capacity should not be taken or at least should be managed well.

You want the best Indian food in CHC, go to this place. Period!
Pros:
- Awesome food
- Awesome service
- Awesome ambiance
- Plenty of parking at rear (from outside you can't see the path going to rear but just drive in and you will see it)
- Owner is onsite everyday and is working with the rest of the staff. He makes you feel comfortable and at home
- Clean place
- Price (food is reasonably priced for the quality offered)
Cons:
- None whatsoever
p.
awesome friendly and accommodating staff! delicious and delectable delights! A relaxed, yet intimate dinning experience. Palak Paneer is a definite favourite, go hot if you dare! This is one of our family favourites to dine at.
C.
My favourite Indian restaurant. I’m sure it’s been 20 years that I have been going here and it never fails in quality. I miss the old building because of its character (was damaged in quake) but the current one is very upmarket and a lovely set up. Trust me this is a fantastic Indian restaurant.
D.
Went to this lovely villa that's been converted to a restaurant on a Tuesday night - and they were busy - and after experiencing the service and the food it is easy to see why!
Starting at the first impression - there is easy parking available when you rock up, and the staff were super welcoming. We loved the concept of keeping all the rooms of the original Villa intact - which meant that all the dining spaces were intimate and welcoming.
A great overview of the food and the chef's special was provided by the wait-staff, who got a nice smile our of our two children.
We like it spicy so ordered "Indian Hot" with a variety of traditional Indian fare. the clean and crisp Onion Bhaji that I had as a starter set the tone for the rest of the meal.
Picking a favourite dish for the evening was hard - but I must say the Mutton Briyani was pretty damn good! the 7 year old, who's normally a fussy eater enjoyed the Garlic Naan and Mango Lassi. With no need to drive, also really enjoyed the Kingfisher that was on tap.
Not very Indian - but the Decadent Chocolate Cake was a perfect end to a delicious meal - this restaurant comes very highly recommended!
i.
Just been for a wonderful family meal with my daughters. I had the Kadai Gosht which I would highly recommend - so tender & full of flavour. The service was excellent. short waiting time & excellent food quality. We have moved out of town now but well worth the 40 minute drive-in. Thank-you Maharaja!
S.
Have been to this resteraunt many times in the past when we lived in christchurch and have had some really really nice food. After a year away we returned only to find our 'go to' dishes were really watered down with hardly any flavour at all, as well as quality of service lacking. I hope this is a one off occurence with it maybe being a bit too busy at them time? Otherwise I'm sure a lot of loyal customers will be lost.
L.
Delicious food, Fabulous service, Lovely ambience and Highly Recommended. We can't wait to go again!!
R.
Been here for dinner during our visit to Christchurch and we highly recommend it. Quick and courteous service followed by traditional Indian food. Enjoyed the food and a Big Thumbs up from us!
K.
Delicious food, great atmosphere, and lovely people. We arrived early and we were served quickly. They were kid friendly but no kids menu. Would eat here again when I visit Christchurch.
C.
Highly recommend this restaurant, the service was excellent and the food was fantastic. The lamb in the saag was so tender. Pistachio ice cream was superb! Looking forward to going again!
J.
Curries were all delicious! Chicken was really flavourful and generous helping of vegetables. Asked for hot and it delivered! Will be back next time I'm in Christchurch!
M.
Naan was delicious and my partners meal was pretty decent. But i found the butter chicken to be not very good at all. Oily and separated, and also tangy to the point that it was sour.
Not the worst ive had but far from the best.
M.
One of my favorite Indian restaurants to go to :) Love the food here. Granted I only get take away from here given its down the road, but the staff seem really nice and friendly.
I.
Welcoming service. Hot plates and tasty hot food. Very obliging staff. Highly recommended by the four of us.
S.
I stayed in Christchurch for 3 days and trust me the food was so delicious and fresh. I travelled to both Australia and New zealand and I can say its the best Indian food Restraunt in both the countries. No one can beat their taste, hospitality and quality. Food had so much of freshness and tastes amazing that we went their each and everyday we stayed in Christchurch. Mr.Daljeet Singh attended us for all the days and it was pleasure meeting him. He had the great gesture towards all the guests and we were more than satisfied from the whole team. Its a must go place in Christchurch if you love Indian food❤️
S.
Great food...friendly staff...will be going again....
A.
There was a really friendly vibe and great atmosphere, loved the butter tikka masala and cheese naan it was scrumptious, although was very noisy and echoey in your new building but loved the interior design and furnishings. Was a bit dissatisfied with the cleanliness of the restaurant as there was lot of rice on the floor next to our table and during our meal the water began spraying the opposite table with chemicals!!! Not too happy about that. Otherwise great friendly service!
D.
Absolutely the best Indian culinary experience in Christchurch. No, make that the South Island! And why would anyone want to go North when it's so perfect down here?
L.
Great place for dinner. Phenomenal list of wines and very friendly staff. Best Indian food I had so far. And big thank you to Rajiv 👌
