Reviews of Sakura Japanese Restaurant
J.
We came here with a friend who likes Japanese food and ordered a bunch of "izakaya" style dishes.
Everything is beautifully done, but the most striking are the takoyaki, salmon sashimi and fried Karachi chicken.
Service is very good and highly recommended
R.
Stumbled on this little gem by accident. Good authentic Japanese cuisine. Riccarton really does have some good little restaurants tucked out of the way. Highly recommend.

Sakura is one of my favourite lunch spots. Despite being a bit out of the way, it is well worth it.
Please take the time to get past some iffy first impressions before cementing your opinion on this place. Yes, it can be a rough process to find a car park during the day. Yes, it is a small restaurant in a pretty plain looking arcade mall. Yes, the menus leave a bit to be desired in their presentation with their sticky plastic sleeves. However, the service you get is great and the food is even better.
The staff are very attentive and pleasant. Your meals and drinks are brought to you quickly after ordering. The food itself is fresh, impeccably prepared, plentiful, and great value.
I would recommend the spicy chicken teriyaki (pictured), the pork belly, and the grouper sashimi if is is available. The Lunch Box du jour (also pictured) is a fantastic deal for someone with a big appetite or who wants to try a variety of delicious bites.
This restaurant really is one of Christchurch's hidden treasures.
Booking ahead is recommended due to the popularity of this restaurant and it's limited seating.

The place is small, filled up quickly, fast turn over too, easy ordering quick table service sometimes feel like getting rushed through though. The food/ lunch quality had been sliding for a while now, it's more like a once a year place to remind ourselves that the quality had dropped. We ordered a sauna lunch bento and a set A menu. Average food with average service, nothing to complain about and nothing to wow neither.
A.
Authentic Japanese food for a very reasonable price particularly their lunch menu. Pleasant decor and friendly and fast service. Recommend you make a booking for weekend lunches for groups of more than four. Japanese sake, plum wine and beer also at a reasonable price.
M.
Nice food and good prices
H.
Very good food and good service. Make sure your book your table in advance
J.
Went with a friend today and the food was very good!
We had the pork cutlet with curry, takoyaki and some green tea.
P.
Great food, cozy atmosphere, excellent service. Recommended.
A.
My family and I eat here once a week - food is delicious and reasonably priced. Staff are very friendly and the food comes out quickly. Ambience is great - very cosy and intimate. My favourite dishes are the deep fried chicken, the pork belly, the teriyaki salmon, any of the tofu dishes, the tempura sushi roll... I am getting hungry writing this.
K.
Had an amazing experience here. Tucked away in church corner this place offers a very cheap price and great serving sizes. It is a small place so it might be good to book on a Friday or Saturday night.
H.
Good food and big portions. Fresh and well presented.
M.
Delicious food and very nice staff.
S.
Absolutely amazing! Had the chicken scewers, pork belly and medium rare steak and octopus balls (not as gross as it sounds) and tastes as good as it looks. Highly recommend!!
J.
Great little restaurant. Popular and packed on a lunchtime. The food is impeccable and precise. I just want more. Car park out of the mall. Hidden gem behind a door..
Z.
Good service! Good place gather with vegetarian friends. Tofu is delicious!
E.
Such a great wee restaurant! We went because of their new Gluten Free menu, for a coeliac family member. Service was perfect food was even better. Coeliac person had no issues what so ever from their meal. Will definitely be adding this to the list of coeliac friendly places to eat!
M.
Loved their Sushi. Very friendly staff. Will definitely go back.
P.
How awesome is this place very casual but excellent food great value awesome service people are friendly and remember you a great range menu food is served quick and hot brilliant 😊👍
H.
These guys never fail to disappoint. Very reasonably priced we had squid and salmon and teriyaki chicken and endame beans the lot came in under$60. Plus drinks and rice and soup. Lovely highly recommend...pleasant staff. Nice and quiet and out of the way. We love it there, highly recommend.
G.
I used an entertainment book for 25%off. It was great value.
J.
I've been a regular customer for a few years now. Food is always great and staff are very friendly. Highly recommend this place.
S.
Authentic Japanese cuisine. Food and service was good. Would definitely go back.
A.
Called in and got the katsu don set, was a bit soggy and small in portion. Will dine in next time and see if better
M.
Really great little Japanese restaurant. Small and cosy atmosphere. Surprisingly good quality food. I had the missed sashimi plate and chicken yakitori plus a miso soup. Am totally full (which can always be an issue with Japanese food!). Highly recommended. PS this place can be a challenge to find; it is in the middle of a bit of a sad arcade in Church Corner, but persist in hunting it down! It’s worth it!
R.
Good prompt lunch service, great menu options. Not expensive. Enjoyed the food choice.
C.
Great japanese food at affordable prices.
Update
So this is written 6 months or more later and I can still say the place has excellent consistency with food. Have not been disappointed yet with their food. If in doubt try their sushi rolls or their tempura and even their takoyaki balls. Yum.
C.
Unpretentious and not too expensive. Meal for last of our group of 6 arrived about 10 minutes after first person received theirs. Not a huge deal but a bit disappointing. Delicious food.
B.
Must say this is one of the better Japanese restaurants in Christchurch. Excellent fresh fish options, traditional servings and very good sake list. The team here are more than willing to please. Sometimes a hassle to find parking during the day but not Sakura's fault. Always check the daily specials.
S.
Love this restaurant. Have been here many times. Octopus Balls lovely as is pork belly and sushi. Service super friendly and fun. Need to book in advance for a table on Saturday night.
V.
Fantastic customer service - their staff are always smiling, nice and wonderful to deal with. Food however isn't great. Their menu is quite small and doesn't seem to change. Food portions are VERY worth the price. I come here all the time and would recommend
P.
Sakura is one of the cosiest Japanese Restaurant ive been to . The staff are very obliging its child friendly and the food is Anazing . Definitely the Best Agedashi tofu ive ever had . I recomend booking for both lunch and dinner as it gets quite full.
R.
Great food and service but still hungry when we left after 4 dishes of food. Very small servings compared to other Japanese restaurants for the same price
X.
Great taste, Japanese owner
D.
With a family of seven, our experience was excellent! Food and service was fantastic 👏 thank you.
D.
Not the best we have had here but still delicious. When busy this place can get noisy. We had the takoyaki ball (yum), beef tataki (yum but high garlic) and salmon sushi.
J.
Decent food. Really enjoyed the mixed tempura and eel sushi roll.
Unfortunately salmon sashimi appears to be frozen...
Kids meal was good value.
I.
The food is awesome and healthy.
c.
I ordered sashimi and sushi set. The sushi was really great as its rice was still warm which is rare is NZ, and according to Jiro, the best sushi chef in JP, the rice of sushi should be warm. The sashimi was great too. So far it is the best sushi i have had in Christchurch. They also have egg sushi omelette. It s not in the set and i ordered it separately, but the rice of this one was not warm enough. But it s still good. The bowl of rice came with the set was slightly tough, i guess more water was needed to cook the rice. An i suggest the staff should have some more training about how to serve the food. The staff put the dishes so far away to me, so i had to move them closer to me.... Though they were friendly. So to conclude, it is a great jap restaurant and i definitely will come again to try other dishes.
S.
One of my favourite Japanese restaurant! Like the lunch box!
N.
Beautiful food. Lived the popcorn chicken in a sundae glass!

k.
Absolutely delicious food! We had a party of 14 people & we all thoroughly enjoyed everything we ate. Well done Sakura we will be back.
W.
Sakura is without a doubt the best Japanese food that you can get in Christchurch without spending hundreds of dollars. The food is absolutely delicious (there's an elegance to it) and the service world class. We dine here approximately once a week and recommend: agadashi tofu, croquettes, deep fried chicken, pork belly, teriyaki salmon, vegetable tempura, yakitori, and takoyaki. If you are having lunch here, definitely try the Sakura lunch box.
A.

(Translated) There is a lot of money and the staff is very kind. ㅋ Smile miso soup was thick and delicious. Sashimi was kinder than thought. I really recommend plenty of rice
(Original)
양도 많고 직원도 엄청 친절하심 ㅋㅋ 미소된장국이 진하고 맛있었음 사시미도 생각보다 친절했고 주변 외국인들도 런치박스 많이 시켜드심. 밥 양이 진짜 많음 추천

(Translated) This restaurant is next to Sanshang Supermarket. The restaurant is decorated in Japanese style. I ordered a set lunch A NZD 35 with appetizers: spring rolls and octopus balls. The lunch box included sashimi and ginger fish fillet, soy sauce chicken. A bowl of tempura prawns and two pieces of sushi, miso soup and rice. I think this bowl of rice is the delicious rice I have eaten in New Zealand! The speed of serving is also fast and it is recommended.
