Reviews of Shirley's Kitchen
J.
Very nice traditional Malaysian street food. It tasted just as if I was back in Malaysia. Very reasonable prices. I'll definitely keep going back there. Probably my favorite takeaway food of the last 20 years in New Zealand. Shirley's kitchen rocks big time!

I would give 10 stars if I can, definitely a place to go for authentic Malaysian food. Just the kampua alone is worth 5 stars, can’t find something even close in Auckland! We always cater from Shirley’s Kitchen for large groups or family dinner. Highly recommended!

Although the choices of Malaysia food is limited, they are good.
Best Malaysian food in Christchurch (in my opinion)

Impressively tasty Malaysian local street food is sold here. Open everyday from lunch to late. Located in uni hall. Dine in available as well as take away. Pre-order from fb is available too. Minimal table service for dine in, quick and easy ordering and payment at the counter, short wait for meal, high chairs/booster available, incredibly kids friendly. Not a big menu but quite wide ranging. Highly recommend.

Awesome service here and even better food! I particularly enjoyed the young man called Kierence who served me. He was so friendly and kind :). This is now my favorite restaurant in Christchurch and I loved the tasty soup.

This is one of the restaurant while tastes most similar to Malaysia food that I ever ate before in NZ. We ordered Nasi lemak, Hainan Chicken rice, medium chip and others. Cheaper price for the meal about 10 - 12 dollars per meal. Highly recommended!!

19th May 2019 - I ordered a spicy prawn noodle soup and let me tell you this; it is spicy and delicious 😋. Not for the faint hearted 🥴. This dish consists of fish balls, fish cakes, prawns 🦐, egg noodles 🍜 and 2 pieces of Chinese napa cabbage 🥬 topped with chilli 🌶️. So yummy and the broth is irresistible. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes spicy food.
8th April 2019 - I decided to try the crunchy fried noodles with tomato sauce and it was a good choice 👍. The sauce was very thick and rich flavoured with sliced fish balls, shrimps, fish cakes + 3 small pieces of broccoli. The noodle 🍜 was similar texture with the instant noodle but crunchier. When mixing together, it was a mouthwatering combination 😋. I haven't had this for many years (at least 10 years) and it was my enjoyable moment with this dish ☺️.
Some people might not like the tomato taste as it feels like eat the Watties tomato sauce. But seriously, it is how the Malaysians and Singaporeans eat.
24/03/2019 - the hainanese chicken 🐔 rice 🍚 (poached chicken served with fragrance rice cooked in chicken broth) is now a permanent dish in their menu. So delish 😋. It is so yummy to be eaten together with the chilli 🌶️ sauce. A must try dish.
23/11/2018 - I went there today to get the hainanese chicken rice but they have sold out 😢😭 and I ended up choosing mee goreng. Don't get me wrong, it is also a good dish. The mee goreng 🍜 dish comprised of yellow egg noodles, shrimps, fish balls (cut in half), and cabbage pieces. It tasted sweet but not as spicy as I would like it. There were couple of burnt noodles and cabbage pieces. However, it did not affect much on the taste.
09/10/2018 - what can I say, the hainanese chicken rice is a dish to enjoy 👍 as it is easy to eat and tasted authentic (what you can eat in Malaysia). I only wish that they serve it on a daily basis and be part of their permanent menu.
23/7/2018 - I have been to Shirley's Kitchen 4 times in the last two months (June and July 2018) and each time I ordered a different dish. They serve authentic Malaysian food, especially East Malaysia cuisine such as kampua noodle, Sarawak Laksa, nasi lemak and alike 🤗. They also make European fast food, such as pizzas, burgers and fried chicken pieces.
The food is amazing and flavoursome, and the taste itself is close to what the locals normally eat in East Malaysia 🇲🇾 (the nasi lemak is slightly different as the ingredients to make authentic nasi lemak are hard to come by - i.e. Lack of Spicy Sambal Belachan). Just look at the photos that I took, isn't delish? Even the takeaway kampua noodle looks very appetising 😋.
Kampua and nasi lemak are usually readily available but Sarawak Laksa is not (you need to check the Facebook page as they usually post their upcoming/ planned dishes).
They also sell other dishes, from curry mee to burgers to pizzas to fried chicken pieces and chips. The chicken pieces are delicious too especially the chicken skin which is crispy and tasty (similar to Country Fried Chicken which is not soggy).
The drinks are good as well, especially the trio milk tea - you need to try it. I had it every time I visit Shirley's Kitchen. If you don't like the trio milk tea, then there are other drink options such as soft drinks and/ or coffee choices.
Would I go back? Yes. Definitely ☺. This is my favorite place 🍽️
Food: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5. It was yummy 😋 and plenty of good food and choices.
Ambience: ⭐⭐⭐ out of 5. Don't expect too much.
Price: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5. Well worth it. Reasonable prices.

Authentic Malaysian alert!!!! Is definitely a must go and a new hangout spot for me. Also amazing, fresh hot chips 😍
Cute family operation, so expect an authentic experience. They have all the staples for a good meal. Had the kampua and sweet and sour chicken. Highly recommended.
Plus, their prices are very reasonable.

Their "Hainanese chicken rice" is really delicious.
And if you are on a budget and are feeling hungry, try their "fried chicken with chips dinner box".
For the price of $10.5, you'd get 3 pieces of meaty fried chicken and loads of chips to fill you up. Tastes pretty good as well. Definitely worth the money !
Their ONLY shortcoming is, they dun have a lot of space.
But within the limited space they have, they manage to create a nice and cozy eatery, which is amazing in their own way.
