The decorations is amazing! The portion of dish is a bit small and the price is expensive as they are doing fine dining. Beside, all the dishes tasted great.

Pretty much up there in my top ten dining experiences ever. To start with, the service was exceptional from perusing the menu outside being greeted by a warm cheery welcome, to when we left with a tip for a great cocktail bar to visit. Our waitress, Georgia, was beyond incredible. She was so funny, patient, and had a fantastic energy about her. She even talked me through the dry aged steaks on display, and made recommendations. This brings me to the food. My fiancé and I treated ourselves to a delicious tomahawk steak. It was cooked perfectly, theatrically caramelised at our table with a torch, and a finishing touch of jus. Bloody ripper, that thing. Your chefs are wizards. We went with triple fried chips, broccolini, and mac and cheese for sides. All of which were fantastic, but the stand out for me was the flavours in the mac and cheese. It was heavenly. If I had any room in my stomach left, I would have gone another bowl. Anyway, I’ve raved about this place to anyone that would listen. If people ask me where to get the best meal in Dunedin, no where else but Prohibition Smokehouse comes to mind. Thank you for being amazing!

This place is so amazing, I can't recommend it enough. It has a lovely vibe and aesthetic and the food is *amazing* - totally worth the price. The service is fantastic too, the staff are genuinely friendly and helpful. It seems like the owner really cares about the staff and looks after them which is wonderful to see. 11/10 would recommend, my favourite restaurant in Dunedin

So disappointed they have changed their menu for the worst. They used to do this amazing mac and cheese side with crispy chunks of pork belly that was to die for. Now it is a grungy mess no definable chunks of panchayat, though they say it is in there, and it all just sticks to the top of your mouth. They have taken the brisket off the menu too. Still a nice meal but not a great one. Why mess with a good thing?? Previous visits I would have given food a score of 5/5

Five star! Must try dishes are the rib eye main and the broccolini. The star of the night is the pecan pie. The Princess Sara cocktail is also amazing! Sooooo good!

Our favorite restaurant in Dunedin! The Mac and cheese is absurdly good and so is everything else. The only thing I didn’t lovveeeee enough to get again were the crab cakes.

We ordered aged steak, crowder and salad. Steak taste awesome! But the crowder needed to improve, too much Mayo in it. And the lettuce served with big pieces for salad, only had sauce on the top, taste pretty plain.

Dined her last night. Food drinks and service amazing. Clam dish duck breast with sides of broccolini and Mac n Cheese fabulous. Topped off with Pecan Pie. All the diners around us were equally impressed. Can see why this is in the top 3 of Dunedin restaurants reviewed in the Sunday Star Tjimes.

So so good... Had the monk fish, pork belly and sous vide flank steak with cauliflower and brocoli sides. Totally recommended, delicious and filling.

I had read fantastic reviews about this place so thought we would give it a go for lunch. Everywhere was very busy in the octagon due to events on in the area but this restaurant had one couple in having a drink. We thought we’d give it a go anyway, had to walk into the restaurant to find the host to sit at a table and make sure they were serving food. Host was most uninterested and seemed more interested in his phone. Took the menus and waited and waited and waited, by this point my husband was a bit annoyed with the lack of service and went to the bar to order. We ordered the beef brisket, sliders, Mac and cheese and truffle fries. The food came out pretty quickly and was good. I would have given the place more stars if it hadn’t been not even bad service but lack of.

Great warm, and helpful staff. Meals were excellent. Fun decor and just a cost feel. Great for any occasion. Just remember to reserve a table, as it does get busy and walk ins will be turned away. But an excellent dining experience

If a world class steak is your thing, then this is the place, great service and food and a big shout out to Quillan Gutberlet for delivering perfection on a plate to the table in the form of a 500 gram 90 day dry aged steak. Thumbs up for a memorable meal.

Got a First Table voucher that gives 50% off food bill. Best decision! The food was so good. Had the sous vide flank steak and the wife had the pork belly for mains. Starters had the chicken bites and pork ribs. Had the roast veggie and triple cooked chips as sides. I wouldn't order this much with full price but with the voucher we got to try lots of delicious food. Fresh quality ingredients you can taste it. Dessert was the pecan pie to share. For the price you get, the flavors are great. Even better if you get the voucher. With the voucher, our bill was like $88 including a cider and a ginger ale. Unbelievable value.

Mains were fantastic and absolutely spot on...However, service was PAINFULLY slow. Like over 2 hours for 2 people and we didn't even order dessert. We ordered old-fashioneds right after being seated but they took almost 45 mins. Multiple tables were seated after us but served before us. We ordered one small plate (crab cakes, pretty standard tasting) plus two mains and a side. You've been warned - this was A LOT of food and we were glad we were starving by the time it arrived. The mains and side were hearty and delicious, very well seasoned. If we give Prohibition a second chance, it will only be because the food was so good. Get the mac!

But this was great..as with the brisket, soft and tasty.. and with excellent crackling.. not sure why a recent person called it. ‘Weird place’ .. it was light, food was excellent and staff were friendly.... nB the site says the address is Andrew St, but it is on the Octagon.. will return when next in Dunedin..

Went here last weekend. Excellent food in fact some of the best I've had in Dunedin, great service and a rather unique way of dining. The only reason this isn't a five star review is when we arrived they were out of high chairs so they lose one point for comfort. Other than that highly recommended.

Went for dinner as a couple. The food was exceptional and something very different than anywhere else in Dunedin. Well presented, creative, great attention to detail, and not a long wait. All dishes are intended for sharing which is unfortunately not clear when viewing the menu online so I guess the prices put many potential customers off! But in reality it's good value. We ordered much more food than needed. Certainly will be back. It's one off our favourite restaurants in Dunedin. The only gripe is that the drink wine and beer list is lacking a bit. I would be nice to have some more interesting options.

They use a char grill to pack heaps of Smokey bbq flavour into everything, even the broccoli. We were also stoked to find 00percent Heinekin on the beverage menu

Decor is odd, don't quite get what style/vibe they are going for, on the plus side very clean and tidy. Food good but portions small for what you pay. It always worries me when I have to ask for salt and pepper as I feel it represents a certain arrogance on the part of the establishment that they do not have such on the table or readily available.

The staff were as excellent as the food! Get the short ribs and a smoky bloody Mary and you can't go wrong! My girlfriend and I had dinner here on Valentine's Day, and even though we were the last booking and things were a bit busy, the staff were very polite and the wait really wasn't that long. Honestly, the food was well worth waiting for! The bread was nice, warm and soft with a flakey crust, the short ribs were sticky, sweet and tender, the wedges were hot and crispy, and the pork belly was rich and juicy, especially with the delicious whiskey jus it was served with on the side. I also had the most delicious bloody mary I've ever drunk, followed by a top notch whiskey sour. This has to be the best restaurant I've ever eaten at, so seriously, go try it and you won't be disappointed!

Prohibition Smokehouse is a great restaurant with a shared dining layout that is perfect for a dinner for two, a large gathering of people, or anything in-between. The food is of excellent quality, and the separate mains and sides are placed in the middle of the table for each person to help themselves. This allows people to pick and choose beyond a usual set menu. The staff have always been friendly and helpful, and the venue has a cosy, rustic theme.
