Massively impressed with this place. It doesn't look much from the outside but the interior is stunning with memorabilia and interesting stuff everywhere. Good selection of Beer, very generous portions of excellent food and a wonderful outdoor beer garden too. 😃 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Definitely one of the best Taverns I've been too! Organic NZ grown ingredients used in there meals, Which are well worth trying definitely quality and quantity all in a meal. I couldn't rate this place any better! The bar service is exceptional with good quality banter! And the huge open garden bar which looks spectacular, Cant wait to return in the summer when theres a live band playing. Even the toilets are kept spick and spam with very creative art work on the wall.

I absolutely love this gem of a Tavern, generous portions of Food, Nice and Friendly service!!! my fave thing tho has to be the scenery of the rolling mountains outside definitely would recommend for those needing to rest after a long drive or Toilet break with a pork sandwich to go!! Brilliant

Awesome place to stop the staff are amazing and friendly such a relaxed environment. The food is a 5 star rating. Would recommend this as a stopping place for those travelling north or heading back from the north. Thank you to the staff of Towai Tavern will be back again in the near future.

This quaint and historic pub has a cool country vibe. I visited with the Whangarei Country Club for the annual combined Club get-together. Unfortunately we couldn't use the fabulous outdoor beer garden due to the overcast weather and Westerly wind nuisance. This meant we crammed indoors with loud music. Not great!! The pub is known for its tasty food and they did not disappoint. Service was slow due to the number of orders to fill but was yummy when it finally arrived. I recommend stopping in for the food and a quiet drink in their outdoor beer garden. Although the pub sits alongside State highway One you don't notice the traffic noise and the locals and publicans are also friendly.

Was going to look at the menu but saw the pies. Chicken and cranberry was the best pie in many years, the mussel pie was also superb. Well worth crossing the centreline of highway 1 to get a beer and a damned good feed.

Do yourself and favour and stop here for lunch. A real classic kiwi road joint. The pies, in particular, are excellent. The owner also makes his own chowder which is well worth while. I ordered the burger and it was great.

Went for lunch and found the pub had no power, but no problem to these guys. We had awesome mussel fritters and pork and beef sandwiches. Wine for us girls and beer for the guys. Will definitely be back, thanks guys.

Saved our bacon. Originally just looking for a toilet (busting at the seams), but met the owner and had a great experience. Kiwis are great! Besides the fantastic, all natural chicken meat pie, he explained the moving of the historic building while maintaining a licence (had to serve beer + whatever during move). Also, his love of restoring American classic cars. Besides this beauty, he's restoring a WW2 Dodge truck, named "Lucille". Suggestion: of you're on Hwy 1 heading north on the North Island of NZ, stop by. Added bonus: great beers.

A great place to stop for a bite along the highway--rustic charm, large portions of tasty food (as farm to fork as possible according to a sign inside), a great view from the courtyard, and fast service. There also appeared to be some toys to keep the kids busy. Would definitely come back for the roast pork sandwich--melt-in-your-mouth bread and well cooked meat. Would have liked to try their selection of brew but had to get back to the road!

Great place, I travel a bit and called in to get a homemade pie which I heard through the grapevine were the best. It was late in the evening and they had run out and offered me a pork sandwich instead, which turned out to be the bestest pork sandwich! - melt in the mouth stuff with fresh ingredients and delicious home made bread. Also very impressed with a sign that said they always try and source organic ingredients wherever possible.

The humble appearance from the road opens up into an inviting, warm and proper cafe on the inside. The proprietors are friendly and run the place with pride. The homemade pies caught my eye and resulted in the best steak pie I have ever eaten.

Up and coming great place to stay, dine, have a cold one. The patrons are true kiwi friendly and even though we did not get a meal, I here they are great. So if you read this give it a try. I personally will go their again!!

I had a Pork and Apple Pie. Best. Pie. Ever. The pastry was crumbly, the filling was chunky and generous - it was a magnificent thing. Everyone should stop and try one! Also had a coffee, it was terrible. I think it’s the machines fault - if you need a coffee on your way past, maybe ask if they could make you an instant instead?

Definitely worth a stop if only for the sourdough sandwich, a good size slice of freshly baked thick bread served with salad and the meat of the day or their meat pie with 350 grams of meat in a lovely pastry. ( I personally would like more flavour.) The Tavern along with a good range of drinks also serve Coffe and cakes and has free wifi access. The staff and locals are very welcoming, just remember put your hand out and introduce yourself this a farming community and a fresh face is always welcome.

What a fantastic tavern! We have been on the road for a month and this was by far one the best stops! The food was incredible and filling and the atmosphere was homey and warm. Very friendly staff and reasonable prices for sure.

If you get a chance call in... Really friendly staff, relaxing/laid back atmosphere, tuck into one of their yummy pies but if you need something more... i totally recommend the fish n chips meal but be warned YUMMY...

Uniquely remote feeling even though it's situated right on SH1 a bit more than halfway between Whangarei and Kawakawa. Homely, friendly and a period feeling on the inside. The food is really something and Jackie rules in the kitchen, she turns out tasty meals every time and we stop with anticipation of enjoying her creations each time we travel to the far north. Depending on the time of day the locals will be hanging out and it's always a good vibe.

This is a great place to eat. They also have rooms but we just ate here on our trip. The lady here is welcoming and very friendly indeed. Sit inside or outside and enjoy the great food.

Really friendly and great atmosphere. Good beer and huge pork sandwiches, just as the sign outside claims. Make sure you time your journey to break for lunch at the Tavern, you will enjoy it as much as I do.
