Reviews of Mangonui Fish Shop
T.
A very attractive seafood shop to stop for a snack or a meal next to the water. Varieties to choose from: seafood baskets, burgers, fish and chips, or order individual items. Even Varieties of drinks and beers are good with the seafood.
R.
Not a bad place to have a bite after time at the beach. Great views and plenty of seating. Fish was quite fresh but price is quite dear.
R.
Great atmosphere and seating by the pier. The lemon fish and chips were yum ! One of my best experience.
M.
Omg the best fresh fish n chips ever..
Beer chips just absolutely yumo..
Amazing friendly people and there service..BOOM!
j.
love this place food was delicious. I really don't like fish so don't usually order it but the calamari and lemon fish I ordered was mmmmmm.....will be back next time I'm passing through...
T.
Up from Auckland and was recommended this Fish and chips store. Three times I've visited the store within a week, the fish is so fresh, my favourite is king prawn basket with either Lemon fish or Hoki on the side and very good service ☺️
S.
Amazing food, wicked view and the people are lovely! Highly recommend, and so many different fish options - heaven!
T.
Great views and fine service. Food and drinks on expensive side, you pay for the location, meals are fresh and good but not superb...
M.
Cool concept being able to sit over the water and look out at the beautiful Mangonui Harbour and we enjoyed the atmosphere and the bar is a great idea. However the food was very average and very pricey. Fish available on the day we visited was hoki, lemon fish (which is basically shark) and bluenose. I was expecting to be blown away based on the reputation, but was sadly disappointed on the food front, chips weren't crispy, fish was okay, fillets are definitely on the small side. Kids meals are better value for money and our little boy was very happy with his meal.
R.
Excellent chippie! Delicious fresh fish and don’t forget the beer battered chips and $2 scallops.
Grab a McLeods beer and sit by the water. Even the music selection is the best!
Highly recommended - don’t drive past this place.
C.
Absolutely incredible chippy. Fresh fish, crispy batter, delicious chips - some of the best I have had in New Zealand! Very quick and lovely service, and the seating has some great views and plenty of space. Can also recommend the half pint of chocolate mousse as a dessert if you can squeeze it in after your main.
B.
Every time I visit Northland I make sure to get to Mangonui Fish Shop, and they haven't yet disappointed me. The fish is the best in the country (my non-fish-eating wife will eat this fish) and the chips are excellent. The pricing is on the steeper side, but it is absolutely reflected in the quality of food that is served. I will absolutely be back again.
J.
Lovely fish and chips right over the water. Great selection including 3 different types of chips, plenty of fresh fish and many sauces to boot. If you're keen for a great ocean feed go here!
L.
The world famous fish chip is a fantastic little shop in mangonui village. One fish of the day costs $13.5 that price is probably set at high end. This is tourism town, everything is more expensive. $46 for 2 people have tasty fish chip that is good deal compare to $38 per one main from other local restaurants. Drink cost $16 on top. This little fish chip restaurant provides online order platform makes easier for people skipping quene. There are lots of parkings available at water front. Overall is good for hygiene, may need to improve toilet cleaning frequency.
Of course, vaccine pass is compulsory to dine in. Otherwise, take out is an option without vaccine pass.
T.
Great experience and tasty, fresh fish. Sizes were tiny compared to the prices ($7.20 for one small fish) however the view is unbeatable, as is the service. The seagulls are beyond annoying and very ‘friendly’ with people which isn’t conducive to a peaceful meal.
P.
Not the Mangonui Fish & chip shop I knew as a kid.
Good customer service from nice attentive bloke clearing up. Good fish and chips but overpriced and obviously now aimed at the well healed passing through Aucklander and tourist.
l.
Beautiful kai. We had lemon fish with chips and calamari with a potato fritter. You know it's high quality kai with something that was deep fried brought no problems to you pallet and digestion.
The service and system to getting your order came quick smart even when it was packed with customers.
Thanks team. Great way to start 2022.
E.
Very famous, very busy, very tasty, very expensive, small portions.
Our $50+ takeout for two looked like a meal for 1 from my usual chippy. A bit disappointing after a 40 minute wait. It was very yummy fish.
N.
Good customer service from the staff here, very professional. The food was well prepaired and delivered in a reasonable time.
A little pricey but overall worth a visit if your nearby.
M.
Excellent Fish n Chips and very fresh. A tad more expensive than other places but worth it at least once as you pass by to try it. 👍😃 Does get very busy at times with the dining area packed to the brim which also increases the order wait delay time, so pick your times. We sat in our Motorhome, relaxing back watching the boats in the bay 👍😃🚌👩🧒
G.
Look no further for a seafood delight.
Been here many times. Never fails to satisfy our taste buds.
One of the best seafood places in NZ.
A.
We had been told all about this place on our way up the island from wellington. Sadly though, the expectations ended up being out of line with the actual experience. The service felt quite lacking, excluding the lovely young girl who served us at the bar.
The food was like your average fish and chips but double the price of anywhere else and half the size.
What they did have that others don't though, is a beautiful spot over the water to eat it. My hubby and I paid $56.80 for our meal!
Mine was $25.40 and they missed an item off my meal that I had paid for. The same meal is $13.50 at my local and twice the size.
They offered a seafood basket for almost $40 which I wanted to try, however I wasn't allowed to swap out the "catch of the day-snapper" for lemon fish because "it made it too difficult for the chefs".
$8.90 is what a piece of fish costs you here, and it's a small square piece, not a fillet like you usually get.
Personally, loved the spot and the fact you could eat in, but I'd pay half the price anywhere else and take my f&cs to the beach myself 😊
A.
Fresh smoked kahawai, favorite fresh hot fish and chips with shrimps in seafood sauce. Always my favorite food to have in the North. Friendly staff great atmosphere sitting over the water 🥰😋
A.
Nice meal but not as good as Coppers in Kaikoura. I reckon it's over rated and over priced only because I have traveled all over NZ and tried fish and chips in most restaurants and takeaways. Service is awesome.
D.
Delicious and fresh fish and chips. As others have mentioned its on the higher side price-wise, but I guess you get what you pay for (the freshness) :)
Nice location to stop and sit by the water
E.
Very expensive for 1 fish 100g, chips and small shrimp salad, nearly $25, But well cooked
No view as we got there at night.
Plus side it had some nice souvenirs and staff good service, and clean.
Not a place for families to stop
C.
Haven't been here since I was a child - but the food is still just as good as in my memories! Was busy when we arrived but the staff were all super friendly and not stressed, as you'd expect at rush hour.
B.
Wow what a little gem. I heard about this place being a bit of a legend and it is undoubtedly the best fish and chip shop out there. Tucked away on StateHighway 10 is a fish shop with a massive variety of seafood, 3 different chip options and a bar. Prices are completely reasonable too and it has a really neat seating area outside. Tried to take photos of my food but we were too hungry and the food looked way too good to stop and photograph. Servings are large too and it's completely affordable. 10/10
J.
Famous fish and chips did not disappoint. Location is amazing. Staff are friendly and very accommodating.
T.
Busy as but expected over a long weekend.
Cute location. Good fish n chips, a bit on the pricy side. Loved the huge sauce selection. Cheap drinks and deserts. Great thick shakes.
S.
We were driving through and were able to order online and specify our pickup time for exactly when we arrived. It's not cheap but the best fish n chips I've ever had. We took ours away but it looked like a great place to eat on site
B.
A great local fish shop with great fresh produce. Menu changes daily according to what’s caught by the local boats. Staff friendly and efficient. Wait times minimal. Plenty of options for everyone including a well stocked bar with a limited range but everyone should be able to find something. A range of fresh salads, dressings, sauces and homemade desserts like pavlova, chocolate brownies and chocolate mousses. Worth the drive if you are not staying locally.
A.
Nek level fish and chips. Expensive but totally worth every dollar as you getting a top catch quality. Would definitely visit again
J.
Definitely lives up to the review hype!! Actually viewing the three different types of fish used in their fish and chips through the counter is a nice change and added to our dining pleasure. Tried both the Hoki & Lemon fishes. It comes out wrapped in paper along with your fries. Also got some tasty calamari which was cooked in chunks rather than the typical rings. Good selection of beers and sodas round out this casual restaurant where everyone is seated at extra large picnic tables in a fabulous deck overlooking the bay.
S.
This is definitely one of the best fish and chip shops in New Zealand. Choose from a variety of freshly caught Fish and other seafood delights straight from the fishermans wharf. Take away or eat in at restaurant situated over the water in the stunning Monganui harbour in what only can be described as a very special seafood lovers experience. There is a bar on premises offering good range of ice cold beverages. This is must visit if you are in the area.
D.
Food was good just small serving sizes. Be prepared for the wait - around 45 min for us. Its a very popular place!
K.
Absolutely beautiful food. Shame about portion sizes of fish and scoops of chips versus prices! . Odd shaped fillets nicer than measured square chunks. Good condiments though
A.
The fish and chips are so fresh and delicious. It also the reason why it is so famous on North land on New Zealand. The location is amazing too and the view is just gorgeous. Great place for family and medium size group. They do have small bar for those like to enjoy their sea food with drinks. Chips are of three different type too which is again unique. I loved the service. Parking is off street and difficult to get during pick season.
A worth a while and must try place if you enjoy fish and chips. The service is well organised and quick too.
L.
Best fish and chips ever. Fresh fish tastes better. The scenery is breathtaking. The staff are so friendly and the service is fantastic.
k.
Best fish and chips we've ever had. The chicken burger was also amazing. Everything was cooked to perfection, super fresh, brought out in a basket. The location is also great.
A.
FRESH Seafood Restaurant on water. Crayfish is available around Christmas. Northlands little gem. Good service. Nice view. It is Kiwi as it gets - they still serve Malt vinegar with fish & chips. Love it! You will rarely find that now.
T.
Bit pricy for fish and chips but it was delicious, Hapuku was our choice and hit the spot, if your up thia way give them a visit.
J.
Fish and chips is good, probably as good as the competition, but should be heaps better based on the haughty attitude, and to an extent on the price. Very nice location.
A.
Look, it's fish and chips. It's GOOD fish and chips, but it's staggeringly expensive, and it's just fish and chips. No crumbed options, no grilled options, there's usually a queue of Tourists, and there's better food to be found in Mangonui - just not more ICONIC food.
The view is iconic, the fish and chips are iconic, but the prices are a little bit insulting.
Also, don't plan on getting a park nearby on holidays... park down the road and enjoy the nice waterfront walk.
D.
This place is incredibly popular and it's easy to see why. We arrived just before 12, and queued up for about ten minutes. We ordered 2 beer battered chips and 2 potato fritters. It only came to around $12, which is amazing when you live in Auckland and nothing costs $12! We waited a further 10-15 minutes for our food, which would normally be a ridiculous notion for a chip shop, however we knew what we were in for when we saw the queue out the door.
When our number was called, we got two delicious meals. Healthy sized portions and the beer battered chips were a great choice. We managed to get a seat on the benches around the edge, so we got to sit and look out over the water whilst we ate. The fritters were big, if a little on the thin side, but the meals filled us both up. The tartare sauce was delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Great food, great price, great views. Will be back next time we're north.
S.
This place rides on it's reputation and views a bit. It does fresh fish and chips but the portions are a little pathetic for the price... and very greasy (see pix). Everything is made on site and is ok. The order and wait style dining is charming but it's definitely not all it's cracked up to be. Overly expensive. There is another spot down the rd a bit we found a bit better for portions/price.
K.
Delicious fish and chips. We had bluenose. So good! Beautiful outlook to the harbour. Friendly staff.
P.
Fantastic - great selection of fresh local fish (blue nose / snapper etc) with chips cooked to your liking (beer battered, fries or traditional chips). The shop / casual eatery is licenced with draft beer and wine avaialble. Don't miss out on sampling the smoked fish and taking some home for supper or healthy car snack on route or forget the mushy peas! Worth planning into your journey north or on the return leg.
R.
Great fish and chips as usual and nice place to eat them too. Don't care if some say it's expensive - you get what you pay for!
M.
Not the cheapest chippie in NZ... $57 for 2 adults and 1 child, but gotta say the beer battered chips were divine. Great spot to sit at and enjoy the view
D.
Fish & Chips were Ok. Location is awesome. Service fine. But had other fish & chips during my vacations in NZ. Therefor I say, it is a bit overpriced for the portions you get. And please please please, change the ketchup.
S.
Fantastic. Best fish and chips we had in NZ! Even had curry sauce. Very good prices and a view to die for. Will find an excuse to travel up here for these alone!
D.
While working up here we had to explore some of Northlands best places to stop. It seems that this place is famous for their fish and chips and after trying it, we can see why. We really enjoyed our feed and the amazing view from the covered deck.
E.
A lively place, yet still retains its quaint seaside village atmosphere. While prices are high, the food is worth it! Vegetarian and salad options are available. There is a separate drinks bar which serves alcohol, milkshakes, soft drinks, and desserts. The view while eating is stunning, however it may be hard to get a seat in the busiest times of the day.
T.
Amazing little spot to have a bite. You pick fresh fish from the display and they will deep fry it for you while you wait. There is also a large selection of otjer seafoods, like prawns and muscles. I had the siviche which was amazing. They are really busy in the holiday, as its the only place to eat.
T.
Amazing place. A gorgeous day had for the freshest fish & chips ever. Pick your own fish fillet & choice of 3 kinds of chips. We had snapper & beer batter chips. I can honestly say this was the nicest fish & chips I've had. YUM!!
K.
Really good fish and chips. Bit of a wait for your meal but worth it. Amazing views over the water
M.
Loved the fresh fish n chips. Beautifull wharf. No real parking for motorhome.
Enjoyed the lunch.
A.
It's so good that the sea gulls were prefering it to the real fish you could see from the shops window. If your in the area you have to try there fish and chips.
D.
Very pretty aesthetic and atmosphere. The interior is clean and simple. Food looks great and is presented nicely. However I feel the price is a bit steep for what you get and there are other places that do the same quality of food at a lower price in 'Auckland'. Given the location of this shop and the good word of mouth I really do like this place and can understand if they have a monopoly in the business at mangonui.
S.
Nice fish and chips with a view over the bay, however their claims about how awesome they are left me wondering what all the fuss is about. The pieces of fish and calamari were small. Maybe we’re spoilt for fish and chips in Australia. I tried to inform the staff member taking my order about the fact that on google maps it states “cash only” but she wasn’t interested, stating that they have their own website and anyone interested can go to that.
D.
Great fish and chips, they even do scraps (ask for crispies) It may be 5 hours away but it's the closest place for great fish and chips
S.
Always fabulous food with a lovely view out over the water, the family packs specials can save you up to 50% on your bill. And you can even get a jug of soft drink for the kids for only 3.00
C.
Eat in or takeaway.
We went here on our way home from playing golf at Kauri Cliffs as someone had recommended it. Really good fresh fish. There was plenty of choice of fish and well priced. Also lots of other selections like, shellfish and mix of fish and salads. You can also order beer and wine from the bar and sit and watch the boats go by on the harbour. They only do battered fish, but our friend was gluten free and the batter was easy to peel off. Tip order a scoop of chips each as the chip sizes are smaller than your normal scoop. Highly recommend to go for lunch or dinner.
M.
Yummy! Need I say more?! 3 types of chip and multiple fish option all fresh and very good. A good view over the bay, friendly staff and free WiFi!
No GF option for the batter unfortunately but they did offer a gf chowder. Puddings also very good value. We can recomend the brownie and chocotale mousse, which could easily be shared between 2.
G.
Bloody great had a really great lunch salad chips & the best cooked fresh fish I think I have ever eaten will i go again that's a no brainier bloody right i will.
E.
To be honest I was a little underwhelmed as I'd heard so much about the place. The service was not friendly (a smile would have been appreciated). I consider the pricing too high. Food OK but not the best I've had, however was well presented. It's very popular & obviously well frequented by tourists as it had a steady stream of customers. I'd go again but probably only if someone I was with particularly wanted too.
H.
The best fish and chips I have ever had in NZ! Good food, spacious seating, well priced drinks, what more to ask? 😃
J.
We had great kumara chips (and a sneaky afternoon wine) looking out over the bay. It is cheap and cheerful, and well worth the time to stop and relax. Staff were a little bit grumpy but we might have caught them at a bad time.
D.
The best fish I’ve had in NZ. Came here because someone recommended it to me and I was so happy someone had told me about this place.
Fresh fish, fast service, friendly staff, good location. Totally recommend
k.
Food was extremely tasty absolutely fresh incredibly juicy fresh the price was bit high but with a reputation like that it's expected.
M.
Great food, great service and that English bloke, I think his name was Michael, was just wonderful. Friendly and professional and not bad on the eyes either 👀
T.
Summary: fish and chips with this view and a bar. Worth coming to for the experience.
The ambience and relaxed vibe are key here as you sit with beautiful views. The service is relatively quick given how busy they are and their utensils/items are eco friendly. 5 stars for facilities.
The food itself is good but 4 rather than 5 stars. The prices reflect the facilities and ambience; it is more pricey compared to other fish and chip shops in the area.
Overall a 4.
D.
Came here from an tour group with the paihia bus fire, was the best fish and chips I had ever ate. Loads of different fish avaliable, and great food
H.
This place has a great selection of seafood and amazing views over the harbour.
The seating on the deck sitting over the sea is great in all weather with both heating and shade cloth. If you're lucky you may even catch a great red sunset.
The staff were friendly and the food was great.
A great place to eat at a good price with views to die for.
A.
A popular location by the water with a very nice atmosphere on a summers day. The food was fresh and good quality, especially the mussel fritter which was superb. The only caveat being that it is on the pricy side for fish and chips.
N.
Woweee!!!🎶 Soooo good, went back the next day!!! Definitely BEST Fish and Chips shop in NZ🐟👍!!! The raw fish, absolutely YUM!!! 👌
A.
Definitely not the best fish and chips in the world but on the whole pretty good. View was nice and great to have alcoholic beverages on offer. Quite expensive for fish and chips.
T.
Been here so many times! Well worth the drive I can promise you! Not loads of parking but such a great place to relax and eat the worlds best fish and chips!
S.
Expensive but tasty. Raw fish worthy of the price, Mangonui chowder not so much. Fish and chips great.
R.
Pricey but yum fish. Very average service on the day I was there. Lovely outdoor seating area.
i.
Good views over the Harbour. Good Chios washed down with a nice glass of wine😅
A.
Delicious fish 👌 i’m not a fan of fish but this one so ymy 😋 , clean , friendly service, nice view
T.
Awesone place, great food and views. Fast friendly and delicious.
C.
A variety of seafood and chips to choose from. The fish is very fresh and tasted great. The price point is high but the location is amazing as well as the service. Disappointed they have a surcharge on public holidays.
L.
Fresh food and a beautiful venue to eat in overlooking the bay. Has the traditional kiwi fiah and chips as well as burgers and other quick food options.
J.
Read a lot of reviews about bad service and small portions, which was certainly not our experience. The service was great and our meals prepared quickly - they were busy so yes there was no small talk at the counter but that was understandable!
The fish portions are sitting in trays in front of you ready to be battered and the prices are on the board. For anyone complaining about portion size and price I’d suggest using your eyes. Yes it is expensive fish and chips but it was bloody good.
We got a huge amount of food to try as much as we could and it was delicious. Easily the best fish and chips I’ve had.
J.
Great location, nice fish and chips but no snapper available from the most famous fish shop in Northland - and probably the most expensive!
C.
Beautiful food every time. The view is great too! The fish burger is the freshest and yummiest!
P.
I love to call in here when ever we go up North to visit family. Prices of the fish are phenomenal, however if you don't like the price keep driving as my sister's and I always stop. On a beautiful day would be even better thank you and thank you to the staff who actually finish work at 7pm and about 15 of us lovely people turn up around 6.30. Thanks
G.
Most beautiful fish shop I've been to. We ended up going two nights in a row! Awesome place to eat. Hamburger was a 5* burger. Rated less due to no water cooler available.
J.
Great views to have your lunch , snapper and chips was fresh but small serving for cost. Forget the seafood chowder, not nice, to watery and lacking flavour.
L.
It was pretty damn good just really expensive but good to go on a occasion really tasty food there
T.
Best fish n chip shop in the far north.
M.
Tad pricey, but amazing location and view. A must do. Fish and chips were very nice.
S.
Really loved the fish and chips and service was really good. I give it a 3 because we paid $40 for a piece of fish, a prawn, a oyster, a mussel, 5 squid rings and chips for the 2 of us. We were still hungry so had to order another piece fish and chips for $13.50. Have never paid that much for fish and chips in my life. Outrageously expensive for what is basically potatoe and piece of fish.
S.
Great fish and chips at a great price. Beautiful views and friendly staff.
N.
Delicious, took the snapper it perfectly cooked, texture like silk. Added bonus of vinegar and salt on the table. Along with ice cold bee. Perfect after a wonderful day in the north.
G.
Good food, but monstrously expensive for what you get. $7 for a tiny little pot of shrimps with seafood sauce is just extortionate.
S.
Lovely chip shop living up to its reputation. Great service, although get the brunch o'clock as it gets busy, thanks to the sea views, cool beers and yum food.
D.
Great place to have fish and chips. Great atmosphere and cooked to perfection
C.
Fish and chips with a view! You order your food and then sort yourself out with seasoning, sauces and where to sit. If you're lucky you will see stingrays, eagle-rays and fish swimming under you. It's a 'World famous in New Zealand' kind of place.
L.
Amazing fresh fish with a great, crispy batter. They have three different types of chips to choose from (yay, options!) and if you pair it with an L&P, well, then you’ve got yourself an awesome lunch/dinner. Def stop here on your way either up or down from Cape Reinga!
A.
Nice cozy place, be careful of the seagulls( they ate my prawns)
J.
Excellent fish n chips & service.
G.
It’s always busy so be sure to give yourself lots of time. The salt and pepper squid was amazing. The fish was quite oily and needed more salt.
P.
Price-wise, it is not cheap and the food was only okay. Took a while for the food to arrive too. Nice setting, but I wouldn't go again.
s.
Mangonui Fish Shop is the best fish and chip shop in the world!!! Granted I haven't ACTUALLY been to every Fish and chip shop in the world , lol, BUT I said what I said!!! 😊 Been going here for years..every time we go up to Tokerau Beach we always stop in on the way home..and it never disappoints!! Be prepared to spend about $100 tho..but in my opinion it is worth it!! The fish is beautiful, the chips are beautiful too!! The shrimp cocktail tubs are literally thee best thing ever..so good..so SOOOOOO GOOD!!! Last time we got the mussels and raw fish too and those were also really delicious!! Everything is really fresh and the deck you sit on is covered and just beautiful..such a nice place to spend the afternoon..especially with a glass of wine..yes they sell alcohol too!!! Love the place, and absolutely LOVE the food..if you are heading up North it is an absolute must to stop in at!!!
B.
This Is A Must To Visit 😍Food was Amazing. Atmosphere was Relaxing Being by the Water.😎
C.
Shall we start with the positive side?
Beautiful layout, stunning view, nice selection of the menu, nice staff.
We got a fishmans basket, though it would be nice to try a bit of everything.
For $36.50 you would expect to get a good quality, fresh seafood. The fish was so thinnly sliced, not that fresh, it's been in the fridge for couple of days, mussel was so small, the chips all I can taste was the old oil it cooked in
I was very disappointed.
P.
Mangonui Fish Sbop is a must do. Beautiful, su culent lemonfish and choice of chunky fries or shoestring.......topped off with that awesome view of Doubtless Bay. This is bucket list stuff. Do it!
T.
Came up north for dads 62nd birthday, the last time we were here was 20 years ago and the food is still the same, bloody awesome! Childhood memories of this area hasn’t changed much and is still as beautiful today. Great views, great food, friendly staff and a cozy environment.
E.
Nice and fresh seafood amazing, the battered king prawns and fries was to good
B.
As always, AMAZING! And they have even improved since I last went a few years ago. Decor is beautiful and the quality of food is and has always been well worth the drive!
G.
Great food, great location. Not cheap but worth every cent.
P.
Really cool restaurant by shore. The dining room is bright with view on the harbour. Had outstanding lemonfish (7.5$). Highly recommended
B.
Great fish.
Chips were OK, be nice if they were hand cut chips.
Trading on their reputation.
Q.
Very nice place and worth a stop. We found the fish fresh and nice to eat. The lady at the biling counter needs some customer service training. Her tone was not very polite and not welcoming at all. I am giving a 4 only because of food and place. If I had to give a score because of how she spoke to me; would be a big 0.
P.
Yummy chips, with good beer, great views and laid back vibe. Such a lovely location.
I.
The food is pretty good but overpriced. If you are passing through its a good place to stop as long as you realise you're paying for the scenery rather than the best fish and chips.
T.
Iconic fish n chip shop in the far north. Very expensive for fresh fish, but really tasty esp the Bluenose. Consistency in customers service needs addressing. Try smiling and sound welcoming (although the young lady behind the was very pleasant).
S.
I am usually disappointed with fish an chips, but this place has to be the best I have had. Light batter, perfectly cooked! Definitely will go back next time I am up north!!
J.
Best fish in chips in Northland well worth the wait 10/10
S.
We had beer battered chips & Lemon fish which was very nice but quite pricey @ $8.90 a piece of fish! I remember going there 22 years ago & there were all kinds of seafood salads to chose from in the window but not today.
C.
Great service stunning views
A.
Amaizind view. Good service. Good fish and chips. Recommend
R.
Great atmosphere, great food. Cheeky seagulls
D.
Beautiful view from the deck, fish was cooked well with a very light n crispy batter, definitely worth the drive from Paihia to visit here! Ate there for lunch on a weekday.
S.
Lovely fish and chips, would recommend the fish of the day.
E.
Superb quality fish and chips! Great selection, the Hapuku was amazing and cooked to perfection. I didn't know pimeapple fritters was a thing, but I tried them here and would definitely order more next time! While they don't have a crumbed option, the batter on the fish isn't too fatty, just delightfully crunchy. The wait time was long, but it was understandable since they were inundated with customers both dining im and acquiring take-aways. Inside the atmosphere is lively and warm, with beautiful hanging plants and fabulous views across the water. The customer service was good too - staff were mostly attentive to the customers and eager to help. I highly recommend this place if you are in the area!
D.
Really good fish (I had hoki) and chips were nice too. Also had onion rings which were yum and English style curry sauce for my chips which was a nice surprise. Licensed too so we had drinks while we waited, admittedly a bit of a wait. Cheerful and helpful staff.
D.
Nice fish and chips, very long wait though. Can claim best as a result of its location rather than the quality.
J.
Good food, pretty pricey though.
s.
The place is fabulous and their fish n chips are too good and garlic bread too. Didn't like their smoked salmon though.
W.
Pretty delicious blue nose fish. Raw fish with coconut cream was nice and the kids meal was good value. Expect to pay a wee bit more than your local average fish and chip store but worth a try at least once.
Y.
Definitely the best fish and chips I've ever had. Not greasy or oily at all. The batter is nice and crisp and the sames goes for the chips. Will be back here again when travelling north.
G.
Easily one of the best fish & chip shops I've ever been to! The prices are quite a bit higher than you'd expect, but it is absolutely worth every cent. The pineapple fritters in particular come very highly recommended, and this is from someone who generally doesn't like pineapple fritters. The location is wonderfully scenic and there's a fair amount of covered outdoor seating, although it can easily fill up during peak times. If you're passing thru this way, you definitely have to stop here!
M.
Yummy KAI at fish shop, they need2 make some fried bread to go with the kina thou
Thank you 👍👍👍
J.
One of the best fish and chips in NZ in an amazing location
J.
Best fish in upper Northland, unfortunately overpriced.
P.
Absolutely Enjoyed the Fish
Burger Moki fish!
Coconut Smoothie too
Delicious
But Beware the Seagull in the Rafters! 🚫
Flew down and picked up a piece of fish out of this Ladies plate
Whilst she wasn't watching!
You won't get that reimbursed by the Shop!
They need to warn their Customers of that.
Apparently it Happens🕊
S.
I had fish. It's a lovely place. I'll definitely come back here
S.
Lemon fish was cooked beautiful...Beautiful service...pudding was to die for...
B.
I'd heard about the fish and chips so felt I had to try them. Yeah they were nice, view was great, the walk along the waterfront past the shops to get there was lovely. Expect to pay top dollar for the experience too. I had the Hapuka and chips which went down with a McLeods Pale Ale rather nicely.
L.
Fantastic hot chocolate, have fish chips here you won't find better anywhere else.
S.
Crispy and tasty but the price is too much for the portion size
V.
Nice spot to grab a bite. Good prices in general even though my dad got the fish of the day and for what they charge it can bring more than just a small piece of fish.
b.
Great fish and chips. If you have a designated driver get the carafe of wine too. Drink responsibly people. Look for the stingray in the harbour out the window
H.
Nice spot for some fish and chips. The fish serving is a bit smaller than others around, but great atmosphere to sit and relax.
m.
Freshly prepared to order and flavorsome, the bonus is great views while you enjoy your fish and chips. It is busy but it's a short wait for great grub!
D.
Very fresh fish n chips with beers available at bar
K.
Yummy fish n chips! The freshest fish you'll ever get with the wharf they land the fish on 50m from the shop. Unique shop being built on stilts over the harbour side.
D.
Nice setting, the food is rather expensive but I guess thats the price you pay for views like these.
M.
Amazing location. A bit pricy. Worth it for the experience.
L.
Fabulous food and great atmosphere 👌
T.
Great location. However the fish is very expensive. The whole menu of things is very expensive. I mean I had 2 yummtlishess fresh fish for $18.. I was shouted lunch lucky me. I Didn't realise the price till I was nearly finished. The shop is Very clean stunning views, great selection of kaimoana. Seafood was fresh.
>.
Soo good. Yummy fish and succulent prawns with a chip butty.
L.
Good food and scenery
Recommend!
L.
Lovely fish and chips as usual. We bought a smoked snapper head there as well!
w.
A great place to have lunch make sure you are vaccinated
F.
Very delicious food but quite pricey! Be sure to get the blue nose fish - the reason they are famous
J.
Great location and great fish and chips. The fish is a little pricey but is cooked well. The jumbo prawns are some of the best I've ever had. There is a great selection of seafood available. Definitely recommend, but it's not cheap.
G.
Ordered the lemon fish and a scoop of chips. The fish was fresh and the chips were pretty good. Thought the price was pretty expensive however as the servings of both the fish and the chips was small.
G.
Best fish chips ever. Yummy.
H.
Top draw fish and chips, fresh, tasty and sustainable. Best fish and chips I have had in NZ, she is a banger.
M.
Lovely fresh fish. Very expensive but very nice.
S.
Best fish and chips. Great location too
G.
Disappointed after hearing all the hype. Some fish was line caught - so we had expect a higher price point for that. However, chips were expensive compared to portion sizes (and compared to rest of NZ) and some stale and cold in middle. Lots of oil leftover on paper. Better local fish and chips in Chch.
L.
Sorry but I didn't enjoy it. Before coming up here on holiday we were told you have to go to the Mangonui Fish Shop it has the best fish. It wasn't. We had hoki. It tasted dry and flakey like in Auckland. The shrimp and prawns were watery. The Surimi dry. We've had hoki at other fish and chips shops like Taipa and further north which were much tastier.
r.
Awesome meal, great service and beautiful veiws
t.
Most expensive fish and chips i've ever eated. And i feel deceived by the priceboard: because the board says fish and chips, then you choose one you want and then get asked about what kinda chips you want, and then the chips are actually not included and you pay more. So i paid 19 bucks for some fish and chips, thinking that it would be at least big, but when it came it was as big as a gold fish.
J.
Beautiful fresh fish expertly cooked - sweet and juicy - excellent chips to match. Lots of extras available. Washed down with a pint of cold tap lager, eaten looking over the harbour with yachts, fishing boats and scenery and the setting sun. For me, it's as good as it gets.
Johnny
L.
Fresh and delicious meals and excellent service.
A.
Very good taste of fish and chip!Must try. The shop design feel lovely and country side view
A.
Wonderful meal, totally delicious, staff werevery friendly
J.
Best Fish and Chip Shop in NZ and I agreed beautiful Snapper marinated Mussels and Prawns
j.
Sadly disappointing this visit, January 2021. Size of portions terribly small yet cost not so. Visited some years back fish size was excellent.Felt advantage being taken as obviously less tourist due to restrictions. Wont bother on next visit to Northland. Did refund money for Kina very quickly as definitely off, smelled atrocious. Thanks for $30 refund for small pottle.
H.
Really nice fish, but it was a little expensive for what it was - there isn't much else restaurant wise in the area so they can charge what they want really!
Very nice food. Good amount of choice and quick service. There's a tannoy system to announce when your order is ready which gets a bit annoying after a while.
D.
Always a pleasure eating here.
A.
Really nice snapper and Lemonfish. Wee bit greasy but really good. Beautiful batter. Quite expensive but worth a visit. Love the free lemon slices.
I.
Love the food! Blue nose, yum! Great view, staff are always delightful
M.
Delicious, fresh fish and chips. Best I've ever had. Well worth a visit. Highly recommend, you won't be disappointed!
N.
Good food. Not cheap but really nice
S.
Expensive. I would have rated it 5 stars but for this fact. Lovely location, good food, nice atmosphere, but hard to justify $100 for 4 fairly modestly sized pieces of battered bluenose and some chips. I still enjoyed the experience though and I would recommend it to others.
B.
I thought the food here was pretty good and is probably the best fish and chips I've had in NZ (not the best fish and chips ever). The location is beautiful and we saw a huge stingray whilst waiting for our food. However, the member of staff who served us was not friendly and pretty rude. In addition to this, I think it was overpriced for what we got. Hence, the 4 stars.
B.
Other than the chips being only warm, the fish, prawns, squid rings and hamburger were very good. On our previous visit about 4 years ago, the restaurant was grubby, happily this time everything appeared clean and tidy.
G.
Awesome fish and chips, over a beautiful bay.
R.
Don't go thinking you are paying the same prices as the local chip shop, in saying that we were happy to pay the price for a great meal of very fresh fish and chips and although the servings didn't look large it was certainly filling and tasty, so we got some other product to take for tea. Staff were lovely
J.
Nice fish and chips, let down by small portion size
J.
Delicious fish and chips. A little pricey for what your getting, still good. Nice outdoor vibes/environment
A.
Snapper better than the hapuka. Personally I like crumbed more than battered fish but there you go. They have all the condiments etc you want also and lots of other food options if you don’t like fish or seafood. Salt and pepper calamari was excellent
J.
Cant say it was the best fish n chips I have had as others have said but was definately fresh although very overpriced. Didnt feel welcomed at all when entering the shop. Surprised at the price of a Paua fritter when I had the exact size and quality on the Coromandel for half the price. Training on customer service skills wouldnt go amiss either. Not bothered in returning.
P.
As many of the other reviews will tell you, the prices are expensive. A fillet each of snapper and lemonfish, one [not particularly generous] scoop of chips, and 12 calamari bites came to $40, well above what you'd expect to pay at your local.
The food was decent, but perhaps not as exceptional as the hype might lead you to expect.
The seating area commands nice views over the water and there is complimentary salt, pepper, vinegar, and lemon slices. However, if you want tomato sauce or aioli (an essential for most people) it's an extra $2 each. Given that the cost of the food was approaching restaurant prices, this seemed unreasonable. We opted to purchase a $3 bottle from the Four Square nearby.
In my opinion, not the must-do some people hold it out to be.
E.
Enjoyed a good old nosh up fish & chips, battered scallops(sadly frozen),mussels & prawns.Gotta say they were still delish plus resonably priced😉😃.Head in and treat yourself it is worth it😇😆..great service, staff, selection of food. Was quite busy with sit downs and take outs😃😀👍.
D.
Lovely and fast service!!! Fish 10/10..But dunno about the shoestring fries not there fault as my daughter had chosen Shoestrings for all of us eating there... All in all HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! #worldfamous
M.
Our second visit was on a busy Easter Sunday but the wait was relatively short and made easier by a couple of tap beers and a jug of raspberry and coke for the kids. The seating area was spacious and we swapped from table to window seating and back again. The view was lovely. Our order arrived and was quickly devoured - the snapper was fresh and light and the calamari was peppery and tender. We couldn't decide if the skinny or fat chips were the best - both were cooked perfectly.
W.
Delicious light and crispy battered Snapper, Hoki and onion rings. Very juicy mussel fritters too.
H.
Disappointed and disillusioned.
We were looking forward to the famous fish'n chips of Mangonui. Nothing essentially wrong with our meals but also definitely not standout fare. A medium-sized plate of bluenose (freshly landed on the nearby wharf) and chips for $17 with zero table service is tourist pricing. It was blowing a gale the night of our visit and the roof leaked.
A real shame!
E.
Yummy food with beautiful view to the sea. You will not regret if you stop here.
T.
Waited 26 years to come back to this place with much anticipation, Sorry to say I was disappointment, it was way overpriced, my wife had the shrimp which tasted like was previously frozen, BUT,she did have the oysters which were very nice, I had the small piece of fish which was a slightly overcooked & greasy & chips which cost $18!?
In 93 it left me with the most wonderful memories of that place, it was beautiful then, now I'm sorry to say it's far from it's it's glory days.
O.
The fish and chips is really tasty, although the prices are expensive considering they are the only fish shop there. The battered coating falls of the fish. Although the different types of fries are amazing.
N.
Perfect place to have a dinner and enjoy the view. Fish and chips were delicious. Must visit place if you are in the region. Would recommend this place.
B.
Delicious fish burger and prawns yum
S.
We had fish and chips last night on our way home from Kaitaia. The fish was so fresh and tasty. There were 3 choices of chips. Not the cheapest we've had but well worth the extra. Lovely to hear the water underneath the deck. Will definitely return.
M.
Tastiest fish and chips I've ever been to
E.
World famous in NZ for a reason. Everyone that's been there will tell you it's the best fish and chips shop in NZ and they are absolutely correct. Go there, see for yourself. It's worth the journey.
S.
Was best ive had there for a long time had blue nose fish which was deep fried just right ✅ and shrimps which were very nice, unfortunately sold out of raw fish but instead had a whole smoked fish which was super fresh
E.
The food is really good, maybe need a better beer.
S.
Amazing!! Family box is a great deal! Super fresh crispy fish, and we asked for extra crispy chips and they were so good! Highly recommend, would definitely return if we're ever in the area again!
R.
Pros - tasty kai, coffee, pretty quick, provided that you don't strike a tour bus! When you order they give you a pretty reliable estimate of how long it will be.
Cons - we've been coming here for 30 years and it's not as affordable as it once was. You can get equally good kaimoana at other places in Mangonui.
S.
Purposely came here for fish and chips which were delicious. Fresh and well cooked. Fabulous vantage point over the bay to enjoy lunch. As kiwis we felt it was fairly pricey but it was well done
C.
Special location. Tasty and fresh.
D.
What a great range of fresh and tasty food is on offer, from smoked fish, prawns and other seafood, right along to the basic burgers or fish and chips which can be enjoyed on the large deck with a nice beverage of your choice. If there is a small down side I think the prices are a little too high but apart from that it is worth a visit. Try also to avoid times when the tourist buses arrive you can be in for a long wait for your food but must say the staff try their best in that busy time.
C.
Great spot to stop by for extremely fresh seafood! Got the fisherman's basket to try a bit of everything and enjoyed it all. Recommend trying some of the smoked fish. The mussel pot was also exceptional. Seating over the water was a nice atmosphere
M.
Complete class. Prepare for a long wait, but it is truly worth it. Ocean side views, awesome atmosphere. Local servers with nice friendly vibes. Fishermen's basket is a solid choice. Great food, a must visit in the area.
P.
Great food and not at all greasy!
P.
Really good fish and chips, which of course is core business. Lots of other options too, including mornay, squid, burgers and more. The prices are varied and start with some excellent value meals for a family on a budget. We went twice in 3 days whilst staying at Cooper's Beach. No regrets, well worth it.
D.
It was just simply delish and the beer was great too. A little on the pricey side but what isn't these days. Service was friendly so all good
J.
Was disappointed to find no snapper or gurnard fish available there🙄 quality was good. The quantity of chips minimal. Very pricey. We found Fresh & Tasty Takeaways (across the road, next to the pub) more to our liking & better value.
M.
the fish and the chips were really good, but we had the 'fishmans catch combo' for 18 Dollars and i think that 1 medium sized fish is too less for the price. If they would add 1 other fish it would be awesome. but i was just a little bit let down by the size of the fish
A.
Very expensive fish. Clearly priced for tourists, not kiwis.
R.
We had a delicious lunch here, super fresh seafood. However I found it to be quite expensive and it was a hassle having to pay via two separate transactions for food and drinks
P.
Definately lived up to the hype. The $5.00 dessert options were a great add on to the already delicious fish n chips. Any one around Bay of Island must visit this place.
C.
Great place for lunch. Only issue is that it's very popular with the tourist so is often very, very busy. I love the Kokoda and you can also buy fresh fish to take away. Shame the only on premise option is fish in batter rather than breaded or pan fried.
J.
Very nice. Cheap desserts which please the child. Fish delicious but pricey. Lovely unique venue
A.
Fish was excellent. Fries were good, a little oily. Hugely expensive however. $120 for four people! How do you do over a hundred in a chippy!
C.
Great fish and chips at a great price. 4 adults at more than enough with only $20! The location perfect with it being right on the water! It's a must if you are remotely close!
M.
Absolute banger of a view to eat ya chippies in front of.
R.
Beautiful location. Fast efficient service. Food delicious. Take away experience eating in! Of course the fantastic weather helped!
K.
Pretty decent fish and chips, a little on the greasy side and one of the bits of snapper had a rather unfortunate texture, the presentation was really good location great but to me, not a patch on Haven down in Nelson.
The Fish and chips we had in Nelson were way Way the best Fish and chips I've ever tasted. Prefect crispy batter and delicious fish, and not at all greasy.
T.
Yummy Fish'n'Chips, highly recommend to visit & try.
P.
Excellent Fish and chips typically holiday resort atmosphere. Very short waiting time for meals to be bought to the table once ordered. A good selection of food and drinks.
N.
Really nice setting right on the water, large portions, fresh and tasty fish. Brilliant kumara fries!
Don't know if it lives up to being the best in NZ though. But I didn't leave disappointed.
Only thing I didn't like was having to pay 2$ for a lil plastic tub of ketchup.
J.
Very good quality. 👌 good location and good food it also has a licenses bar so you can enjoy your meals with a beer
S.
Great fish and chips shop.
S.
Lovely fish and chips but customer service lacking and confused about buying food/drink separately. Girl called our order but it wasn't ready and she was rude.
V.
Fab seafood, really fresh however very pricey and the chips are just ok, could have been drained more. If you are feeding a family it would be costly, but ok for a one off. Restaurant prices for takeaways
1.
2pm with light rain and this place was packed. Food quality was good, prices are reasonable. Squid was great although personally I would have preferred a lighter batter. Chips and fresh fish were cooked well, raw fish salad was tasty too. Coffee was acceptable.
The sign that you need to clear your own dishes and dispose of rubbish in the bins needs to be somewhere a lot more obvious.
We saw a seagull catch a fish while we were eating.
C.
Fish & chips were excellent. Be prepared to pay for quality. (Chowder was more like potato soup. Very disappointing. Flavourless, overpriced, small serving, accompanied by par baked supermarket bread roll).
D.
Yummy bluenose fish & chips chased up with ice-cream. A must do if you're in the area.
T.
Definitely worth a visit or two!! Lives up to the hype! Best fish and chips ever. The mussel fritters are a must and friendly service :)
H.
While I enjoyed the food and atmosphere in the restaurant, thought it was expensive for fish and chip. It's a fish and chip shop at the end of the day. I have ordered a calamary basket, a seafood chowder, a fish and chip basket and a small piece of smoke salmon for three of us. It's okay but expensive. It's disappointing with the seafood chowder in a disposable paper bowl. I've been there but I will not go again.
M.
One of the best fish and chips we have ever tried in New Zealand. We have tried a fish called blue nose and it was absolutely amazing. I recommend to visit during sunset.
N.
The food and Views are amazing. However, the neighbors opposite your shop was chainsawing which was a bit off-putting. Not nice, when you want to celebrate your birthday with your whanau listening to that during our dinner.
T.
This is a great location right on the water, with stunning views and sliding windows you can open to get the full effect of the view. Great menu choices and friendly staff, food was perfect, very tasty. Even though busy it was still very tranquil, well worth the small detour from the main road.
c.
Beware non tourists price gouging here, costs an arm and a leg. Fish is fresh and well cooked but portion size very disappointing. Chips average and also a small portion for $5!!
E.
There's a reason everyone talks about this place. Everything is fresh and made to order. The staff are friendly and the service is pretty quick. It's a Kiwi staple to visit this place so pop in and support the locals.
S.
Well cooked fish. Plenty of options with chips, such as beer battered, or Kumara. Sometimes fish is limited to the local catches which means sometimes no snapper, gurnard, terikihi etc, but it is fresh and still tastes good. Because this is an iconic fish shop be prepared to pay a little more than usual.
D.
Expensive and small portions...very small. No mention from the staff that the food comes out in individual boxes by which ordering individual chip portions is necessary. The lady was quite rude and didn't get the correct chips I selected either. Amazing view and a couple jolly chefs behind the counter bringing more atmosphere. Packaging was a bit excessive and unnecessary, could do with a "save the planet" lecture.
M.
Good food. But it does get rather busy at times depending if the holiday crowd is around. Definitely phone in an order if you can
j.
Good fish n chips but my gawd it's 💰💰 pricey. And they don't do fresh oysters, only friend ones.
G.
Fish and chips like you've never experienced before! Fast service, fresh and tasty food. Great range of choice. And they got a great dessert menu! Would recoup anyone going North
J.
Great view and atmosphere, spend the afternoon.
C.
Fish was well cooked and chips were crispy
T.
While the location is great, and the service efficient - the fish & chips were expensive, with small servings. $13+ for a small piece of Bluenose (& then extra for the chips which is approaching restaurant prices).
L.
The shop is good. Food is nice but very very pricey. Drove along way to get the Blue nose and wasn't disappointed.
C.
Best fish & chips in New Zealand!!
H.
Very good fish & chips that were cooked excellently. A bit pricey but worth your money. Will defs be back when next in the area.
D.
Best fish and chips in New Zealand quite pricey but well worth it. Try the Bluenose it's beautiful. They all so have raw fish and other salads lovely food and a lovely place.
V.
Fish and chips as well as location do live up to the hype. It's really good and I wanted to come back the next day for more. There's a surprising number of options available including many types of fish, 3 types of chips and several salad choices.
E.
Hidden in the far north of New Zealand, this Fish and Chips Shop is a must when visiting New Zealand. The fish they offer is always fresh and very tasty. You can combine it with a selection of different chips. They also sell drinks and some alcoholic beverages, as well as deserts. The location is very nice, being located right at the sea.
A.
The fish is so fresh and beautiful. Best fish I have had in a long long time. And then if you are eating there, the setting is amazing. Grab you fish and chips, maybe some bread to make some chip butties, and sit out over the water enjoying the scenery. Would love to get to come back to Mangonui again. Even if it's just for the fish and chips
j.
easily the best fishnchips that we tryed during our trip of northland. ddnt mind paying a little more fore good food . and 5star customer service
P.
The fish is a bit over cooked or not as fresh as you would like not at the high end of quolity could do with a shake up hate to see the standard dropping with the fish . But still a good spot chips excellent a burger I saw looked good I would still go back still better then most fish and chip shops but this should be top end product this is a destination stop over .
R.
We love the Mangonui fish shop. Everytime we're on holiday in the area that's our must do stop.
The fish and chips and fish burger are excellent.
Staff is always friendly too.
H.
The view amazing great fish and shrimp, the chips was a bit hard as it was undercooked maybe due to size.
Great food presentation and accommodating staff.
Best value for money and great atmosphere.
D.
Great fresh fish and chips.. bit pricey though.
L.
Lovely view, fish and batter were delicious.
P.
Great to see this place is surviving in todays climate. Always a great place for a fish and chip or sea food meal,
H.
Nice enough place adequate seating with serene views away from the shop alot of debris and slight murky water along part shore line fairly pricey...lol must remember smoked fish ready for. 1pm daily... timing is a virtue aw and the kinas very yummy enjoy.
N.
The most amazing delicious fish and chips I have ever had. Been there twice and still haven't disappointed me. The staffs are friendly and i guarantee you , you will definitely love having fish and chips there.
c.
Lovely place but very expensive $40 for 4 fish n chips
L.
Great food, views and atmosphere! Didnt expect to be able to dine in with ocean views.
A must visit
M.
Pricey and more for tourists. Food was fresh and tasty but a guy told me to go to the local pub for double the feed at half the cost.
A.
Tourist trapish fish n chip shop. High prices but outdoor area with great views. The fish and chips were fine but as mentioned you are paying a premium. Also licensed with quite a range of beers etc to choose from. Also a large selection of seafood to choose from. Worth a visit just be prepared to pay more than usually would at your local fish and chip shop.
P.
Mmmh not really happy.. we order fish and chips wile on tour, so we found it ready when we arrived there, and was not probably the best thing to do..
10$ is not much but would not have spent them on one piece of fish and soft chips.. (I personally hate soft chips..😑 )
Knowing that before I would have tried surimi.. that was looking yummy..
That is sad because I have no choice to come back and try something else.
so I can reccommend a stop here to try fish but do not get chips.. and definitely do not order it before unless you are starving.
Great location and fresh fish.
E.
Pricey and mediocre customer service from my experience (they get the job done). Workers didn't seem too happy, do they need a pay rise? Or team building exercises? I think these people need a bit more fun, to WANT TO actually be there and some customer service training, especially if that view isn't putting a smile on their dial. Good food though.
L.
Fish was beautiful but overpriced. Great setting looking over Bay. Was worth the visit though
S.
No doubt the best fish & chips in NZ! Cooked to perfection and full of flavor. However the service from the lady that serviced us was terrible. She was abrupt and pretty much gave the impression we were wasting her time or she didn't want to be there. No eye contact or smile, which we all knows goes a long way. Disappointed, however that fish was good!
F.
The fish and chips here were pretty good. I had heard great things about this being the "best fish and chips in new zealand"... the fish and chips were pretty good, but I wouldn't say the best in nz. The location and atmosphere definitely assist in it receiving a 5 star rating. You can't argue with a prime location out over the water!
C.
Literally the best fish and chips in New Zealand. Don't go past the raw fish and shrimps in cocktail sauce. A cheeky G & T or a beer goes well too. Have recently introduced desserts!
S.
Fabulous fish n chips. Being peak holiday season we had a long wait but it was worth it. Blue nose is fabulous. Thank you.
A.
Good fresh fish for the fish and chips -- they had 3 different fish options and you can get them with the chips or not. The chips come in 3 sizes, thin/shoestring, fat fries, and steak fries. There were a lot of fries per order. They also have smoked and marinated seafood, seafood burgers and mussels in a pot was one of the specials. Beautiful sitting area. Just don't misplace your number as they're sticklers for seeing your number before they'll hand over your food order. If you're still hungry afterwards, they have desserts and ice cream options, as well as a coffee bar.
K.
Great historic shop and good fish n' chips.
W.
You can find better fish and chips all over New Zealand - Brightwater and Motueka (The Happy Chippy) are just as good if not better. And look, Mangonui Fish and Chips are good - I absolutely enjoyed my Calamari Basket with chips, but get this: $18 for a bowl FILLED WITH CHIPS and 10 small pieces of battered calamari. This is far too expensive. The fish was beautifully cooked, two battered oysters and a bowl FILLED WITH CHIPS for $19.
We walked down the road and saw a menu with a far better appetising meal - calamari & prawns with kimchi, salads, and lime and chilli dressing for $18.
Take your pick:
- $18 for fish and chips
or
- $18 for a decent meal!
P.
Good fish and chips shop with a variety of additional seafood to choose from. The only thing that doesn't add up for 5 stars are the prices. Excellent food for a slightly too big price

We visited Labour Wknd 27/10/19. Lucky to get a parking space at the door, cos it was packed to the hilt. Walked in to this bright little shop on the Pier. To the right the cooks, to the left the hoard of visitors, straight ahead the bar(beverage counter..lol). What to get? Meal for two, about $40.00, Chips/ battered fish/scallops/mussels/ garlic aioli sauce tub/2 x Milkshakes (Driving'*), 1/2hr wait (we #17), sit and admire the view & tourists, chat with the locals picking up their phone orders. #17 we collect, drive through Maungonui township, so pretty, definitely need to park up somewhere & walk. We stop at a drive round bay across from the Public ablution block (toilet), look at the box of food, it looks a bit small for $40.00.Open it, packed to the top. Meal is absolutely delicious, so much for your money, we couldn't even finish it (shame on me for thinking box was too small). thoroughly enjoyed with the beautiful sea views & local children playing at the beach. So go on people, give it a go. Highly recommend meal for two, cos it would actually feed 4 x people. Enjoy.

Nice burgers very very pricey got charged 9 dollars on top of price for new years day didn't mind though but heck 3 burger and chips.for almost $70 lucky I had a drink in the car wouldn't of costed almost $100

Great food, loved the fact that the portion of fish I had was not the overpriced, oversized greasy lump that I am used to in London. Quality over quantity always gets my vote. The view of the bay while I was eating made the experience for me.
I can't recommend this place enough

The Mangonui Fish Shop has a history and reputation going back decades and it never let's anyone down ever. Always packed with happy customers, always offers an interesting menu with specials and a catch of the day and if you eat in you sit munching your impeccably cooked and presented food with the beautiful Doubtless Bay virtually surrouding you. What more could anyone want?

I would like to give this a 5, the view and food quality definitely deserve it, but I have to say I didn't love the price and portion size. Knowing that, I would still recommend a visit if you're pushing through.

Good fish n chips but not quite able to live up to the hype. Location fantastic and the food is tasty, but somehow I expected more. Perhaps blinded by the pre-visit expectation.

Blue nose fish and chips with a great view

Very nice food. Bit expensive for fish when they catch and fillet there own fish. Portion sizes for fish small. I picked mine from wet fish cabinet still dear but fresh.Nice deck for eating your food.

Went with 14 family members. Food was fast and tasty but very expensive with small portions. We had to purchase 3 more lots of food thinking we had brought plenty since we spent over $150 for the first order we spent over $400 to make sure everyone had enough. Food tastes good but pretty pricey fish and chips.

Nice fish but limited menu; no breadcrumbed fish available which spoiled the visit for one of our family

Lovely food, friendly staff. Cost about $30 for 3 pieces of fresh battered hoki and beer chips. Good sized meal.

Good fush and chups. Burger was excellent, my fish batter was a bit soggy and could have done with more cooking.
