L. F.Absolutely amazing! The Stables saved our wedding day! With an hours notice they prepared, on a Sunday afternoon, to host 91 guests with no prior knowledge. A venue across the road let us down, an hour before walking down the aisle, but Stables saved us! They understand major events, they understand weddings, the understand customer service, it was all heart!
K. S.It was a cozy venue for a special event. Had a small chapel ideal for a private kind of wedding. Food was good but has still room to get better.
J. F.We had the most special experience at The Stables recently. They were able to cater for a wedding party of 90 with only minutes to make this important decision. The original venue was unable to fulfill their promise and The Stables were contacted and were ready, willing and able to cater for this unexpected event on a Sunday evening. The staff were professional, obliging and super efficient. Their generosity of spirit and 'can do' attitude helped make this wedding a most memorable occasion. S. M.It’s been a while since we have been equally impressed across our main 3 areas of rating a restaurant. In order of the experiences-
Customer service is 5 star, as a team they are in unison with each other, my husband commented saying he likes the fact that you can’t tell who owns the restaurant because each of the staff display a passionate sense of ownership for the restaurant. Very proud, friendly staff who are not obnoxious, and we really value that. A sense that a place is more than just employment, a togetherness on the floor that is true kiwiana manaakitanga and it is shared throughout.
Family friendliness is a 5 star, we like to dine with our young family of 3 children often, and The Stables team are at the front of making the experience a pleasant one. The contemporary country setting is beautiful, horses going by and accessible playground equipment outside on far side of the park. Great for the children to run off steam with relaxing scenery as the backdrop. Yes, they have colouring ins, as entry to a competition to get a half price meal for the next visit. A thoughtful and effective way to have children waiting patiently for their meals is always a tick.
That brings me to the 5 Star kai (food). Perfectly prompt, signs of a well organised kitchen and it definitely shows! Quality fresh local produce with presentation seen in a la carte dining. I thoroughly enjoyed my fresh line caught Leigh snapper. My husband enjoyed the crispy duck breast dish and my eldest had the chicken supreme, 10/10 all three cooked perfectly tender. We were so impressed by the dedicated chefs, and The Stables not missing a beat. Also, the garlic bread with olives is a must! Now for the childrens menu, simple quality indgredients which for our youngest fussy eaters was perfect, especially because our children have ASD tastebuds, so we usually find that even the herb sprinkles over pizza, chips or pasta is enough to turn our children away. I asked kindly that if they do usually serve with herbs, if they could leave them off and it was honored with no problem. Not once did we feel our requests were an inconvenience, which these days is hard to find. The Stables child friendliness was apparent and well received and anyone who dines with a young family will know how important this is.
Drinks- gin lovers must try the Rhubard Tonic. We enjoyed all our drinks especially the TED Otago Pinot Noir.
Deserts- don’t give it a miss!
We value experience over pricing so like anyone else like to feel that we got what we paid for and we absolutely feel we did and very happy to tip this place. Just entirely worth it and highly recommend. Thank you for contributing to a wonderful Mother’s day, it was the first without my husband’s mother who recently passed away and we couldn’t have asked for a more memorable way to have commemorated the day. We will definitely be back to try your steak and rib Fridays!
V. M.The Team at the stables made our wedding day perfect! Very punctual with food service and amazing quality food. Bar staff very helpful. Amazing convient location. Great amount of parking. Very easy to communicate with and incredibly flexible with our ideas for what we wanted. The team set up the venue picture perfect and made it very easy the next day. Nic's communication and genuine want for us to have the perfect day was amazing. The all around care was amazing for our wedding of 100-120.
M. H.First time eating here today. Will definitely return. Beautiful setting. Friendly staff. Beautiful kai. The best vegan pizza I’ve ever had. Most vegan pizzas are all vegetables. These guys used plant based alternative to meat. Vegan chorizo which my husband, an avid meat eat, said did taste like chorizo. My husband had the roast beef with veg and Yorkshire puddings. My husband tends to be very judgmental of Yorkshire puddings due mainly to the fact that he makes awesome ones himself. He reports that the ones with his lunch were very good. High praise from him for a Yorkshire pudding.
S. B.This place is great and there's a lot to see. Very well set up country barn and ranch atmosphere. Including horses, carts and, of course, barns. There is a cafe, restaurant and bar to choose from for food. There is also a souvenir shop and a huge, wonderful playground. There was a lot we didn't have time to see here. We had the sunday roast (pork) and snapper. They were both beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. We could not fault our meals, or the restaurant at all. The atmosphere, service and setting were great too. Even if you just want to stop for a break and food while driving north this place is definitely worth it.

I’ve been here a few times and it’s always a great stop when in Matakana.
Our meals arrived very quickly and were perfectly cooked. The steak was done to perfection and all round the flavors worked. The chicken was moist and tender while having a nice crispy coating, on a lovely black rice salad.
Highly recommend a drop in, prices are very reasonable and won’t break the bank!

Lovely restaurant with an amazing scenery while dining out. I highly recommend the roast dinner if your there on sunday. We really liked the menu and good prices too.
Great service and the staff made us feel very welcome and we'll be back again.

M. T.We had our wedding here in May 2021, and oh man, there is just no better venue. The ambience with the fireplaces, the setting, and the food outdid our expectations. Georgia and Woody were wonderful to work with, so accommodating and kind with reshuffles that had to take place. The staff on the night made us feel so special. The fact that it’s an all in one venue makes coordination so simple, and communication was smooth and timely. Absolutely magical all round, couldn’t recommend them more!!
O. K.The first time we went to the Stables we fell in love with the venue. We knew it was not only where we wanted to hold our wedding reception but also where we would continue to go every time we wanted to escape Auckland. We had our wedding reception this past Saturday and they did an exceptional job. Right from the beginning communication was excellent, they planned alongside us to make the event run seamlessly. They helped us source anything extra we needed and recommended vendors. They took time to sit down with us and have a complimentary tasting prior to the event to make sure we were 100% happy with the food and drink choices that would be served. Every staff member clearly loved their job and they went out of their way to make sure we were happy. Georgia is the wedding coordinator and she was bubbly, accommodating, and adaptable to all things that came up. The staff on the day set everything up and packed everything down which significantly decreased our stress levels and really helped us to just enjoy the time with our family and friends. The food was exceptional (as it always is), and all night long guests were complimenting how delicious the meals were. We honestly couldn’t recommend The Stables enough, whether its for a spontaneous meal out or an event like a wedding. We will definitely keep coming back and we are really hoping we can come back as wedding guests ourselves one day!

B.My best friend had a weeding planned for months at Sculpturum across the road, however due to a power shortage from a cyclone and the fact that Sculpturum didn’t have a generator the weeding was cancelled on the day with one hour to the wedding. Someone had the brilliant idea to ask if The Stables could host the wedding with only a couple of hours notice, and they accepted!!! Of course I wouldn’t recommend you doing the same, lol. But I have to say a huge thanks for the stables team. They were absolutely amazing, Alessandro (the restaurant manager) and Georgia (the event organiser) were very professional, friendly and helpful. We were so grateful that everyone (kitchen, waiters, front of house, etc) accepted to help us, even though they were about to pack up for the day. That could have been a very disappointing day for my friend, but instead it was the best day of her life. I couldn’t recommend The Stables enough. Thank you guys, you rock! And by the way, those sliders were absolutely delicious 🤤. You were so professional. Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️
T.Steak and rib night was amazing. 16 of us and not 1 complaint about the food. They were fine to cater to different diets and substitutions and the service was amazing! What a great way for a 13 year old to celebrate his birthday.

My daughter bought me a birthday Cake, a few staff bought it out on a stand with candles on it, they sang happy birthday to me and even invited all the guests to join. They made me feel very special. Definitely recommend!

D. S.We had the pork belly, bruschetta, and a rack of baby back ribs. The bruschetta was nice and the ribs were good, but neither were exceptional, especially considering how expensive the entrees are for such a small portion. The pork belly was lacking flavor and taste - we did not like it. After seating us in a quiet spot by the fire (the fireplace is really nice), management asked if we would move to different table to accommodate a large group. Our new table was in close proximity to another large group that was very loud and we were not given water at our new table either. We found this whole situation a bit inconsiderate. Their food definitely was not good enough to compensate for how we were treated, so we won’t be coming back here anytime soon.
H. T.We decided to drop in on a whim and so happy we did. My wife had the Sunday roast (lamb) and I a burger. They were delicious, and I admit I had a bit of food envy.
Staff were very attentive and engaging. In particular the manager Ali was a pleasure to talk to. Overall a great experience, we WILL be back.

M. H.We had our wedding here in amongst COVID angst and uncertainty and the team were phenomenal. From the initial viewing right through to the picking up of items the next day, they went above and beyond. Their all inclusive package really does take the pressure off the day and we would highly recommend it. The venue itself is stunning, and has so many options for the different parts of the day. The food was incredible, all our guests commented on it and the team were especially great catering for allergies and intolerances. The team are flexible and accommodating throughout the whole process, and the combination of this with the quality of the venue, food, etc really is well worth the $$. They really know what they're about and pride themselves in making your day perfect. Couldn't recommend them enough!

C. L.We had our wedding here in May 2021 and had the best time! The Stables were so accomodating, especially in the midst of planning for a wedding during the uncertainties of Covid-19. We initially planned to get married in January 2021, but due to family being overseas, we asked if we could postpone to a later date. The Stables were responsive and considerate during those stressful times. A huge highlight for us was the wedding coordinator, Georgia! She is super friendly, organised and the perfect person to cater to our wedding needs. From emails, decor, preferences, enquiries, etc, she was great! [Thank you so much Georgia :)]. We held both our ceremony and reception at the venue, and it all went smoothly. The servers were so efficient and helped pack up everything (florals, dishes, decor, etc) for us. We could enjoy the day completely. We would totally recommend the venue for an event like a wedding!

They happily rebooked for us and we’re great with communication and my thousands of questions! Our guests raved about the food, and the decorations on the day were exquisite - better than we had pictured! The venue is a great place for a romantic, moody and rustic wedding and the day ran smoothly from start to finish! Can’t recommend the stables enough! Thank you for making our day so special! 😊

After Covid having to make us postpone from our original date. Georgia was accommodating to help us move the date without any costs and made things so easy for us. Everyone who attended our wedding raved at how awesome the venue was, the food was and everything about our wedding was awesome. Couldn't have had the day we had without Georgia and the team!

T.Was buzy as we had a big group but also buzy with other people. Some food was good. My main not so great. Tasted like strong tomato baked beans over chicken which was abit off putting. As the name of it sounded like it would be something else, not what i got. Then a customer from around the corner in the bar tried to tell us our child was too noisey with the blocks that were there for kids to play with....fair enough we were in the process of stopping it anyway. But i was more annoyed at the fact she did so when the music and loud talking of everyone in the restaurant was louder than that of my child! I personally dont think i would want to come back again. Felt uneasy here
