We have been to this restaurant a few times over the last few years. Compared to the first time we went, it has taken a bit of a dive. The service was fast and pleasant. The table was sticky as... even after waitress wiped it. The Salt & Pepper Squid, originally was to die for and reasonably priced... now you get a mouthful for $19, and it has not got any taste to it. Mains Ordered: 2 Ultimate Surf and Turfs (med), one came out well-done (maybe due to it being thin). The Fisherman's Choice, battered fish very oily. The Pork Belly, looked big due to the huge amount of mashed potato. The meals in general looked great, other then the oiliness of the batter on the fish. There was no real great taste to the meals; the sauces did not stand out; and the salads (which I am all for!!), were covered in something but not sure what - as no taste. A huge disappointment.

It was my first time there and one I would happily do it again. The atmosphere of the place and the friendlyness of the staff combined with the meal made it an enjoyable experience. The meals are value for money and you have the choice of eating indoors or outside soaking up the atmosphere of the harbour,boats and wildlife. With that I'd have no problem recommending it to friends and family. Thank you guys for a wonderful experience.

Don’t be fooled by the inauspicious approach through the industrial area, or the rather mundane looking outside, this place has a gorgeous patio area at the rear overlooking all the yachts and the mountains, and big landscape windows if you prefer to sit inside. And the food goes with the view: fresh, pleasing, and well priced. Great selection of beers on tap. The only reason it didn’t get five stars is you do have to work quite hard to catch the eye of the table staff. Highly recommended

We enjoyed a fabulous family meal here midweek. I spoke to Sophie a couple of times to confirm a highchair and wheelchair/disability access - she arranged a great table that accommodated the whole family and even had an activity pack to keep the toddler amused! The food was top notch - we enjoyed perfect steaks and scrumptious seafood. Great service and everyone left very satisfied - Gran is still talking about what a lovely evening she had.

Always Fabulous !! The Best Seafood Chowder; Creamy Flavourful and lots of Seafood . Salmon Caesar Salad totally delicious. Salt & Pepper Calamari is always a Winner too. What a neat place to dine! Great staff, ladies, you deserve a pat on the back! My grandma absolutely loves this place and I can see why! The meals were divine. The steak perfect, scallops devine and the blt sandwich was to die for!

The food is good here. The seafood platter was plentiful (easily feed 3) albeit slightly on the overly deep fried side for my liking - I would have liked to see some variation in preparation style such as grilled/steamed/cooked in sauce.

Very few restaurants open on this day, quite busy, excellent waterfront, young attentive staff, 80% of the customers were over 50, food delivery time was too long, room was about the right temperature given a very hot, the drinks were good, I am a celiac so the food had to be gluten-free, all and all I recommend.

We have been to the Bar & Grill many times and as usual the food was very nice. What was sorely lacking was quality service... a common theme in many of the reviews. The staff seemed almost frenetic at times racing from the bar to the kitchen and back. Our main meals arrived, one of which was incorrect and our entree had been overlooked. The incorrect meal was put right and was of excellent quality, but there was a long wait as we were then slotted in between other orders already on the go. We had to ask for water and also noticed others having to ask even for basic cutlery items. Our friendly waitress seemed put out when we commented, after she enquired as to how the meal experience went. Shame as it’s got such potential but as a meal out experience it is rough around the edges. As the waitress, said at the end “Must be one of those nights”.. and sadly for us out for a special occasion, it was !

Only thing I would say is the level of noise coming out of the kitchen was extremely disturbing as we were right near it. The language and the things being said towards the poor younger girl was terrible and i feel very sorry for her! The kitchen staff need to be aware of the customers near the kitchen. Other than that we had an amazing time and will be returning !

Looked shocked we arrived. No welcome and looked slammed, despite not full. Yet..... Luckily our mains were in before the 20 odd people that just walked in basically have the kitchen a heart attack I'm sure. Wait staff were also bar staff, so mixing 2 G&T's for table 4 meant table five had to wait even longer. Raised an eyebrow to a staff member for a refill, but was forgotten. Cannot fault the staff. Friendly and professional, but struggling with the customer population. Maybe a few more staff would help. Good view of the marina (over the parked cars).

MAKE SURE YOU READ THE SPECIALS YOURSELF! Food was great. Service patchy. Mains were brought to the table as we were taking last bite of the starters which was a little fast for our liking. We asked for more time before dessert and got it. When we were paying the bill we realized there were specials that we never got told about. When I mentioned this to a staff member they said it was up to customers to read the special boards as they came in as the staff is not trained on remembering them. Unacceptable in my opinion!!

We dine here regularly, the service is excellent, although they can get quite busy on some nights as they are so popular. The food is cooked well, large servings and lovely blend of flavours. We love the Surf and Turf, as it has a generous helping of seafood along with a succulent steak, and the delicious sauce tops it off. The location and setting is nice, comfy and interesting.

Initially I thought the first person who greeted us didn't listen as we asked to see the menu first, twice in fact, before we decided to stay and accept her invitation to be seated. We were told it was the biggest menu in town and the inference was why would you? I am glad we stayed for the food was quite good. We enjoyed the calamari which was nicely presented without being crumbed. The groper meal was also good although prefer lemon garnish to orange as it cuts through a little more with tang. Food good service average.

Breads and dips were ok. The "breads" were similar to toast slices, brown & white. Fish of the day was really nice. Seafood Chowder was nice except for the 2 fish bones. After showing and telling one the wait staff, she said she'd tell the chef. She came back to say, "They don't believe me, can I take the bones to show them?" The duty manager was standing nearby and asked what had happened. We told him and he said, "Well we get all our fish supplied already filleted, we don't do it ourselves." So basically not their problem, was the message. Not even a sorry.

This is one of the nicest places in Nelson to have a meal or an alcoholic bevvie or a coffee. you can sit right on the marina and enjoy the peace. I always go back here when visiting the area.

I'll give this place four stars, but with one caveat: service can get very slow when it's busy. We'll never again go on a weekend night, but we'd happily go back early on a weeknight. The food is very good, especially the pasta special we had, and the setting and ambience are really nice.

My wife and I are into our third week travelling around the South Island. We arrived at our accommodation this afternoon and found a menu for The Anchor and decided to give it a try. We had the best meal since we've been away and also the best for a long long time at home in the UK. Well looked after from the moment we walked through the door by Paddy and Kylie and, as I said, the food was amazing. We both had 'fishermans choice' which was outstanding in quality and quantity. Tip....don't go there unless you are prepared for a proper meal...none of your sliver of fish and a lettuce leaf, for sure. We'll be back again before we leave. Highly recommended!

I really enjoy having meals or a coffee here. If you go in for a coffee at about 930 or 10am there will usually only be a few people in the restaurant making it a great place to have a private business meeting. I also find it great in summer when you can eat outside with a view of the Marina.

Pretty average. Steak over cooked, people meals forgotten, waitress got 2 people meals mixed up. We had entrees, and had to ask for cutlery after our mains had come out. A female staff member took us outside and showed us to sitting area where we choose corner tables as to a reply came from her grumperly furtherist away. Not once did she smile and our group of 10 all said "shes not happy". She brought glasses and water bottles still no smile and the group felt uneasy with her attitude. Members of group heard her telling her staff members where they were to cover for the night again not talking nicely. I have come across your type before, you think the world owes you free internet access and free device charging. You will invariably arrive early at a venue, take the best table with use of a power point, and want to stay for 3 or 4 hours whilst only buying a coffee. When you are challenged about your extremely selfish behaviour, you spit your dummy out, chuck your toys overboard and write a defamatory and unfair review, as you have done here. You should go to Starbucks or another such chain, where the staff don't care, and will let parasites like you, sit there all day with one coffee …. now jog on (*∆°)
