Yes!!! This place is exceptional. Relaxed yet professional service. Exceptional food and a wine list that to die for. I will legit travel back to Nelson just to eat here. Bravo.

Incredible food! Really enjoyed the quality of food. Just keep in mind that this restaurant only serves tapas portions. Photo showing king salmon sashimi. We also had the ceviche, beef short ribs, tofu and grilled lettuce. They were amazing!

I love going to the Urban Oyster Bar & Eatery when i am in Nelson. Tonight we had the cevichi, smoked duck taco and the short rib. All three dishes were beautifully executed, amazing flavours - I wouldn't have changed a thing. The staff are very friendly as well. Last time we visited we sat at the bar where you can watch the chefs prepare the food, this time it wasn't possible due to covid, but it didn't take away from the great dining experience at all. A must visit for sure when in Nelson.

Went here in orange light one night on our honeymoon, staff are lovely & chatty, and will help with the menu. What they don't tell you is the cabbage with kimchi butter is not only the best value menu item, but also insanely delicious and perfectly cooked 🤩 The pork belly sliders & duck breast tacos were also magnificent, but a bit more on the salty side & not as good value for money.

Wow! We had four dishes. The ceviche (snapper) was amazing, I could’ve eaten three more. The duck tacos were delicious and then that was followed by peri peri market fish and the chicken. Absolutely coming back when we are back in Nelson.

Heard about this place and had to give it a whirl. Glad we did!! Really busy inside, but sitting outside in Nelson central was just as good. Always something (or someone) interesting to see. We got 3 tapas type courses and they were amazing. I had never had raw fish before (apart from sushi), and i was a bit skeptical.....but it was delicious. The other courses were also outstanding. Service was top notch and friendly. Highly recommend giving this place a crack.

Food cuisine is more innovative and has a different taste. The taste is very good. But the taste is generally salty. More suitable for pairing with beers. Need to drink a lot of water to neutralize the salty food. It is recommended that the restaurant reduce the saltiness and it will be more suitable for the average person.

Fantastic eatery in Nelson. Came here for a late lunch in a Thursday and the lovely staff were more than happy to help with the menu and our large group. It was awesome to be able to sit at the kitchen and watch the chefs work their magic. Each dish that came out had unique flavors and contrasted well with the last dish. The wine list here is local and there are some great wines on here. Stand out dishes was the Sashimi and the Ceviche Taco!

Wow. Just wow. Michelin trained chef, it is phenomenal. We are based overseas and are in NZ on holiday- this is one of the top 3 restaurants we have ever eaten at. The ambiance is excellent, happy people eating and drinking some of the best local products. I do wish they had a better local beer selection outside of what they have but as for the food it is 10/10 you may need a reservation or have to wait but as you can tell by the reviews it’s worth it. We have two kids (7 and 5) who dived with us, the restaurant catered for them very well, great place when you want nothing but the best for yourself and others.

The brainchild of michelin trained chef Matt Bouterey, Urban is a relaxed, casual but excellently executed little joint that nails it on all the important things and deserves the reputation it has earned for itself. The lighting is atmospheric without being too dark, the music the right volume to still be able to talk, and with a choice of tables depending on how social you're feeling. The balance is right. The staff are all attentive and know the menu well, impressive considering how often it changes to suit what's seasonal to just what the chefs are vibing with. I would recommend following their advice on what not to miss, they've nailed it every time. The food itself is, of course, excellent. They're happy to do smaller portions of most dishes to give you a chance to try everything, proposing the idea unprompted, and the menu is designed accordingly to facilitate this. Of course, being an oyster bar, there's a range of oyster preparations to choose from too. I ran with the lovely ceviche tacos, a delicious japanese escabeche, firey and flavoursome pulled pork korean dumplings and rounding out with a delightfully jiggly kiwifruit and meringue panna cotta. The fish is fresh, the fruit and veges matched wonderfully, and the flavours vibrant. It's hard to go wrong. Overall it wasn't the cheapest night out but for the quality it was worth every cent and I would visit again without hesitation. In fact I may end up doing just that if the end of this year lines up...

Best place we’ve eaten at in New Zealand so far (and we have been here for a year). We took 5 plates to share and we were total full. It was a delight from the wine & beer tasting to the sweet course. All the courses were tasteful with a mingling of amazing flavours. Urban was one of the most delicious spots we experienced in our Honeymoon in Nelson! It was such a great start to our cuisine experience! We had oysters as entre, they had so much salty dressing I couldn't taste the oysters. The rest of the meals were great but their penchant for salt just about ruined the delicious options available. After a fantastic day trip to Abel Tasman my sister and I wanted to finish off with a nice meal. The lady at Gravity Vineyards highly recommended Urban Oyster Bar and Eatery and she did not let us down. We arrived just after 7pm, managed to get the last table for 2 inside, enjoyed a glass of wine while perusing the menu. We started off trying the oysters even though we aren’t really fans (seems silly not too :)). Butter and tempura and both were mouth watering and moreish. The menu was vast and interesting, however I chose the fresh sashimi (the best I have had to date, with tapioca puffs and soy wasabi that made perfect accompaniments), my sister had the cerviche tacos (white warehou) which were also delicious. Although their various cocktails that were made right in front of us were tempting we enjoyed another glass of wine. We ended the meal with their tiramisu which was garnished with a deconstructed version, the perfect end to our night. There was a nice vibe with a mix of ages, Our waiter was friendly and efficient, we left at 8.30pm. $120 for 2 which we thought would be hard pressed to beat in Auckland. Thank you for a very enjoyable evening, can’t wait to come back to Nelson.

One of a few places that open til late. I noticed that the people are very nice, but it was packed when I was there, so they served a bit slow. I only ordered the beer flight (tasting tray) there. Urban is fairly new to Nelson, but has rapidly become the go to place. The food is outstanding, service second to none and the ambiance is fantastic. It does get very busy, so think about heading in early to secure a table, and for a real experience grab a seat at the kitchen bar for a great view of the friendly chefs who will often give you a sample of something that might be appearing on future menus. Highly recommend urban, however it does come at a bit of a cost!

My partner and I had been unimpressed by the majority of the recommended restaurants on TripAdvisor all over South Island. Many of them were overrated and lacked real quality. Urban Oyster Bar and Eatery is not of those places. We went there 3 times in two days, because the food was on a whole different level to anything else we’d had on South Island. It is an Asian fusion restaurant featuring very inventive and innovative dishes, each one intricately and painstakingly designed by the chefs. By the time we left, there was nothing on the menu we hadn’t ordered. Having come from Sydney I can say this place would hold it’s own in the top 10 in any big Australian city. Matt (the head chef/manager) is Michelin-trained, and has worked with extraordinary chef’s like Marco Pierre White, so guess it is to be expected that the food would be this good. Summary: Food - 9/10 outstanding. Almost every single dish blew our minds. Recommendations include venison tataki and the pork belly bao bun. Of course the oysters were delicious. Service - 9/10 despite being extremely busy at times the staff were very attentive, always up for a chat and never made a single mistake. Prices - 8/10 most of the mains are between $20-$24 however every dollar spent is worth it. As the dishes are designed to be shared, ordering 3-4 dishes would mean about $50pp. Altogether a very fair price for fine dining level food. If you are a fan of good food or are looking for the best meal in the South Island, look no further.

The restaurant I had wanted to go to had closed, so I decided to explore the “drag” in search of dinner. Came upon this place and was intrigued by the menu and the fact that it was packed seemed to indicate it was a popular place to be. They had a nice array of beer options from their in-house brewery as well as a nice assortment of domestic wines. I ended up doing the porkbelly steam buns, which were tasty and filling at 3 to the order. I also did a nice, local pinot gris that came highly recommended by my excellent waitress. I don’t know that I would come back as the pricepoint was a bit high for my particular liking, but I enjoyed the space, the accommodating staff, and the fact that it was an excellent spot for people-watching!

I love the fact that you can sit by the kitchen and chat to the chefs while they are working (they even give you tasters!). Urban has a chic Melbourne feel with a vibrant hum. I love the fresh sashimi, the pork belly sliders and the tempura chilli crab is to die for! Everything is freshly made and the staff tell me that the menu changes regularly. We tried several of their dishes and they were all delicious with delicate flavours that matched perfectly. Awesome place to go with friends if you are looking for the sharing concept with delicious dishes that are reasonably priced. They also have plenty of local wine and Golden Bear on tap - once again very reasonably priced (several glasses under $10.00!). A MUST go if you are local or visiting Nelson ... I will definitely be back.

Love this Nelson staple. The cuisine is very well put together, the Asian/seafood fusion flavors never fail to impress. I recommend the sashimi entree and the ceviche. Really anything from the raw menu actually. The owner Matt is a real people lover and a magician in the kitchen.
