We went here for our second dinner of the evening. We ordered from the lite menu, tempura type veges plus a tomato salad. Both really tasty and good choices for vegetarians. Dessert was baked cheesecake with sorbet. When in Oamara this place is a must visit

Came with low expectations (for no reason!) but left thinking that it was probably the best dinner I've had in a long time! As a group of 4 we've ordered a couple of different starters and mains..and every single thing was amazing! Very tasty and well presented. Simple interior, but very stylish and greenery adds a cool touch. Would go back to Oamaru just to dine at Cucina again!!!

Nice atmosphere but a touch warm on a sunny day. Food was great. We dined on public holiday soo no bar service. But they do have a large selection of craft beers.

A pleasant dinning experience in a nice building. Had the ravioli and churros for dessert. Menu has three vegetarian dishes which I suggest they could add more.

Am enchanting experience. Located at the edge of Oamaru's Victorian district this cozy restaurant oozes charm. The dining room is tastefully draped in plants that compliment the high ceilings and tall windows. It feels intimate without being cramped. First, the wine and spirits selection is ample. For food we started with the picada, an assortments of meats, cheeses, and pickles with grilled bread. Each was a treat for the palette and we enjoyed it thoroughly. Two of us had the ribeye which was cooked to perfection and accompanied by potatoes and greens which were richly enhanced by delightful sauces. In addition the venison was reportedly delicious as was the fish of the day (salmon). At the end we had no room for the temptation of dessert but were thoroughly satisfied and impressed with our experience!

Trusted the chef and was so glad we did. Amazing food and beautiful restaurant. The service was professional, friendly and made our visit very enjoyable. Thank you.

This was probably the best dinning experience we have had in our 17 years in New Zealand, the food was just perfect, portion sizes were spot on and the staff were great. We had the shared platter to start which was incredible in its variety and quality, I then had the ribeye steak and this was cooked to perfection. We will definitely be returning.

Absolutely outstanding dinner at Cucina. W enjoyed the chef's choice menu, and it really showcased the best of the menu! The paired wines were fantastic as well, and very generous pours. Place was busy even for a weekday, and the vibes were on point. Decor is beaut too.

What a great find in Oamaru! The food, and drinks were delicious. We booked a table as I thought the restaurant would get busy in the evenings, would recommend this as to not disappointed. We started with empanadas and the chorizo was very tasty. Our mains were the fish of the day and the steak, the flavours in the steak dish were amazing I would highly recommend that as a dish. Cocktails were good and the beer selection was also good. The service wasn’t amazing and a little lack lustre for such a great restaurant. Loved the old Victorian bank building and its decor.

Exceptional in every way. The food was just perfect and the service from the very competent and friendly wait staff just rounded it all off. This is the sort of dining experience one expects in a competitive city environment, and in fact I would go as far as to say that this restaurant would top many fine establishments in most New Zealand cities. Will be returning for sure when we make another trip Oamaru way, hopefully not too far off. Thank you Cucina for a superb evening of fine dining, you know how to do it.

A well presented restaurant, the service, the atmosphere, the food all very good. The fact that an Argentinian couple own and run this place explains much. The food quantities were large, atuned to a restaurant in a country area and their country of origin.

Totally delicious plus the service was outstanding. We have dietary requirements. The waitress was so helpful with ensuring we had a delightful meal.

It was a rather nice surprise to find a restaurant of this quality in a small town of Oamaru. When we rang up to booked, we were offered a 5pm or 8pm seating so the restaurant obviously have a few sessions. We ordered the Aged Beef and the Lamb for dinner coupled with a Pale Ale and a Sav. The food arrive with a whopping steak knife which made me feel like I was on a mission to do some damage on some poor unsuspecting cows. We had a great meal and the service was excellent and even managed a chat with the lovely owners.

Great food, ambience and attentive staff made this restaurant a great choice of dinner venue for our overnight stay. Albeit our 2nd choice this was by no means 2nd rate so with fabulous flavours and ambience do book ahead and try this wonderful Oamaru secret ... we will be back to try Del Mar too 😉

Very good food. Went for the chef's menu - we enjoyed the food although unsure why we were sat in a separate dinning/store cupboard room. Didn't go for the wine pairing as the impression we got was that it was four small glasses. Can get a bottle of wine for same price.

No Locro on the menu was a bitter disappointment having waited over a year and traveling 1,300km to Oamaru especially to try it. Hungover, exhausted waitress did little to appease what should have been a culinary highlight of our South Island holiday.

An Oamaru gem. Gorgeous food, beautiful upscale atmosphere, attentive and friendly service. Great location in the central Victorian district, situated inside one of the area's many 19th century limestone buildings. Menu has daily selections and aged meats, and the cocktail list is quite comprehensive. An array of creative starters and side dishes are on offer. Lots of wines by the glass and a variety of local and imported beers. Try the 55-day aged ribeye steak, seasoned perfectly and grilled to perfection. I also tried the chocolate tart for dessert, which was a new item on the menu. It did not disappoint! A lovely place for a romantic dinner or a night out with friends or colleagues. I will definitely return.

Wow. This restaurant is a treasure in Oamaru. The dish is the best, I've never eaten this delicious steak in NZ. I am missing the flavor and taste. Fantastic and stunning. There are everything whatever you want.

Decore was nice but a little chilly this winter when I visited. Food took sometime but arrived very nicely plated. A tad bit heavy on pocket but food was nice. Had fish of the day (sole) nicely done but sides (Brussel sprouts) was very sour. Chocolate foundant in dessert was nice but too sweet for my taste. Overall a good place to visit once in a while. 8/2/20 Visited again. Had tomato salad and croutons (not worth 18$) and sirloin which was ok. Overall 60$ ... expensive!!! 4/6/20 - 3rd visit Had mushroom risotto balls n chicken ravioli.. not bad but once again 45$ with entree size.. 16$ for a drink.. this is a high end place..

Really nice restaurant and interior. Really nice spot in Oamaru, really close to steampunk and the old looking street where you can find a cute little bakery, art shop, taste some whisky or walk to the harbour. At this restaurant I had the rib eye (rare), and it was cooked to perfection! Some nice beers and wines on the menu. My choice of dessert, Affogato, came with a sherry. Bit sad because it's way better in the more original form with a liqueur like amaretto or frangelico. Still the chargrilled ribeye was amazing!

One of the best (and biggest) restaurant meals I've had in NZ. Argentinian - style (owners for from there). Chef's choice + wine match is the way to go. Empanadas. Black pasta. T-bone (they age it themselves) that I think was from a brontosaurus. All presented beautifully, fully explained, with amazing little fiddly bits and extras e.g. something I think was fried pork floss. Very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable waitstaff. Good ambiance. We turned up thinking we had booked but in fact had not (our fault), but they fixed us a good table anyhow, no prob.

You can count on the food and service and the cocktails here! One of the best in the Otago Region.

Friendly staff. Full on a Wednesday! Book! Great Little Biddy (from Reefton, so te Wai Pounamu origin) G&T. Aged beef serving was huge but tender and delicious. Black garlic Rigatoni dish also tried demonstrated a chef who cares. Recommended.

Seafood platter is delicious, different varieties of seafood and taste really nice. The kids had pizza, spegetti, fish & chips, dessert, we had ice cream and churros, the chocolate sauce for the churros, fant@stico.... Well done to the Cucina team. Highly recommended, 5 stars from us

This restaurant would rate as the best experience and can’t think of another that is better. Cocktails were amazing, all the food dishes were visually beautifully presented and without exception superbly tasty . Staff were friendly and very attentive. Highly recommend.

The 55 day aged steak is stunning. Not a big fan of fish of the day. Waiting time is from Victoria era to Queen Elizabeth II.

Loved it. Needs an Italian wine or two on the wine list.

We had a wonderful evening at Cucina. Two of us on a Friday evening, the place was averagely busy. We had the "Trust the Chef", and we were very happy with everything that we had. It all arrived hot, not too quickly, and was delicious. The restaurant wasn't too noisy despite the number of people; it was just warm enough, could possibly have been a fraction warmer. We would happily go back.

My friend and I had a lovely experience here. Seeing the lack of a vegetarian antipasto platter, we requested for one and were pleasantly surprised when the chef made one on request. It has three Otago cheeses, smoked sour cream, pureed pumpkin & carrot, pickled fennel, beetroot & carrot, tomato & chilli salsa, pureed parsnip, polenta bites and heated olives with charred bread. I reckon it should become a regular!

We were lucky to dine here last Saturday night . The restaurant had been recommended to us by our host at Poshtel . Warm and inviting atmosphere, very friendly team. Our server was efficient, knowledgeable and very personable. Our meals were superb. The portion size just right, the flavours second to none and excellent presentation. Our wine choice was great and we particularly loved the red wine glasses. Would love to know where to purchase ?? Thank you to all the team . A really delightful dinner. Look forward to returning.

We had dinner at this establishment on Saturday night, Grouper was the fish of the day. I trained as a Chef in NZ and spent 10 years cooking here and lastly at Browns Hotel Mayfair London, I would have to say Saturdays dinner was by far the best meal of my life, I can not speak highly enough of the Chef and team, Thank you. Service and ambience were first class, however we were very disappointed with the quality of the pasta, which was doughy and hard.

This is a delightful restaurant in a town that was an unexpected find. The architecture and the vibe of the place is great. The lamb really was delicious and although we had a slight problem with the level of service initially the chef came out and result it for us. That was very good service and we commend him for that. This restaurant deserves to do well and you will enjoy eating here.

Beautiful food, pleasant staff & great service. Blue cheese salad wonderfully balanced, steak cooked supremely. Great atmosphere and ambience, with a tremendous selection of wines & beers. This Oamaru place would give many South Island places a lesson in politeness, comfort, presentation & menu options. Would return here in a heart-beat.

Cucina is a good place if you really like eating meat. We gave the trust the chef menu a chance as we don't like to stress over what to chose of the menu always wondering if I we are making the best choice. Food was really good with just a few ifs that make me give 4 out of 5 stars. Canapé was a beef and black garlic emlanada with tomato sofrito. Very tasty. First course was black garlic with carrot puree, pickled carrot and crispy pork. It was nice, lacked a bit of salt but was colourful and interesting although by now it was black garlic on 2 out of 2. Main was an 80 day aged ribeye on the bone with a tomato and strachiatella salad and some baby potatoes with (yes, here it comes) black garlic. It was a lot of meat and the tomatoes were a nice refreshing touch. Potatos were OK but not much more. Dessert wasa chocolate mousse, chewy brioche and a really nice ice cream that had a little bit too much alcohol. On a personal note i would have chosen a fresher dessert instead of a heavy choc mousse after all that meat/potatoes.

What a surprise! Argentine and Italian fused so perfectly together. The warmth and welcoming people, then the place too was a highlight. Generous servings of delicious empanadas, a shared pasta, then so much more tender and beautifully aged beef steak than I should have eaten at a single dinner, but enjoyed every mouthful, especially with the chimichurri accompanying. Cucina could transplant into the finest dining street in NZ and live in the top 5 every day of the week. However, it's relaxed and inviting dining room, well priced but simply delightful meals and wines, put this restaurant as the best I have experienced in the last 5 years. I put Cucina Oamaru as my "Best New Zealand Restaurant". 5 stars every day of the week.

Innovative menu, excellent range of craft beer and wine

Oh my god! where do you start ? A menu to die for, a beer list that blew me away. Pasta was amazing. A hidden gem in this awesome town. Everything was perfect.

5 star straight away, the dehydrated chocolate with sour cherry ice cream was stunning, and services were really good!

Great staff, Lovely cocktails, fantastic craft beer selection. The food..... The do great things with flavour, and great to have something different in Oamaru. However with so so many elements the meals themselves suffer. The confusion (rather than fusion) between Italian, Argentinian and North African flavours conflict. A simpler approach may be more successful. We went on a busy night, with a very full restaurant. Next time we'll have drinks and snacks only.

Awesome. The antipasto platter was all homemade and so delicious. Main I had lamb was beautifully presented and was just divine. Desert I had the peaches not over sweet just cooked in their own juices. Lovely night out . Would thoroughly recommend it to anyone .

I've been here twice now, and really wish I could give it a higher score. Both times the food has been really good, but both times we also had to wait over an hour for our meals, with no explanation or apology. Also my food seemed lukewarm, or at least not hot, despite the long wait? Which might be down to waiting for other people at my tables meals but I'd still expect better kitchen management from a restaurant such as this!

We had a wonderful evening; great service, excellent food (some items on the menu we'd never seen before, always a bonus). The Spanish lesson from the staff were also much appreciated! Friendly staff, atmosphere... what more could you want. We've been a few times before when visiting Oamaru and will be back.

The best place to eat in the Oamaru! We have had numerous fantastic meals here when passing through and will keep coming back for more. The food is sooooooo good, the service is super friendly and they have a fantastic wine selection. Highly recommend stopping in.

Overall my experience at Cucina was mediocre. My salad had an extremely over ripe pear, my ravioli was overcooked and had a less than a dab of pesto. The staff were somewhat attentive and receptive. The setting was bland with a dash of tacky. The restaurant as a whole had an air of eloquence and fine dining. The truth is, looks can be deceiving.

Cucina never fails to impress and the word is out very busy on the midweek evening early December, do book ahead. Intelligent, flavour packed, well presented food. Worth a trip down from Christchurch

For a small town Oamaru has more than one top class restaurant. The setting, the service, the beer and wine lists do better than most cities can offer. Most importantly Pablo the owner, chef makes most of the ingredients himself. Always a pleasure going to Cucina.

Ambience ok, nice building and friendly staff. Food cold when it arrived though, lamb dish not tender and salad just a mass of rocket with a couple of bits of blue cheese tucked away. Nice roasted cauliflower but overall could definitely be better

Firstly I have to appoloapo as my first review I got the restaurant mixed up with one I visited in Dunedin. Now to the real review. The food was amazing!! We did the chefs choice I think it's called and I was pregnant and that wasn't at all an issue! It was a really wonderful evening with great food and drinks. I would highly recommend this place!!

This is a great restaurant, both food and staff.

The restaurant is good and the quality of the food is wonderful. But one thing is awkward. There are two options for the raviolis small and large portion. We had the large one and got 6 raviolis. So what is the small one? 32$ for six raviolis isn't a good offer at all.

Honestly, they had a 120 day aged grass fed tomahawk (Flintstone in Nz) and it was quite literally the best steak I've ever had. And it was a quarter the price you'd pay in Toronto. Amazing.

Our dinner here was very tasty. Oamaru is lucky to have such a gem! It is on the pricier side, but worth every cent for the freshness of local produce. My partner and I shared a delicious rare ribeye steak with a fantastic house made chimichurri, and a moreish smoked sour cream. My partner actually said it may have been the nicest steak he'd ever had! We also shared the gnudi (a large gnocchi-like, cheesy steamed dumpling), which was a little too cheesy for my tastes, but a lovely texture. The brussel sprouts with bacon were a super yummy side. Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about their menu. The drinks menu is incredible. Some weird and wonderful brews, including an apple bar crumble cider, which my partner relished.

Interesting ash-coated eye fillet. I started to scrape it off, but the waitress very tactfully explained it was meant to be like that, and it was pretty tasty. For dessert I had the most beautifully textured mousse I’ve ever eaten

Had a very tasty well cooked meal of osso bucco and spinach fazzoletti pasta. Also the dining area was quite reasonably warm given that there was a very cold wind on on the exterior; temperature was 2 degrees when I left the restaurant.

I just called in for a glass of wine and a small bite to eat just after opening on a Saturday. I felt welcome to stay as long as I liked at a great table in the window looking straight down the Main Street. I really enjoyed my visit, thanks!

Had a wonderful dinner with overseas family at Cucina on 14 January 2015. We had a fantastic experience, the food was outstanding and the waitress was perfect even though it was packed we did not feel rushed or neglected, thank you to everyone at Cucina.
