Reviews of Hikari Sushi Bar - Beach Street Queenstown

Affordable and delicious Japanese restaurant in central Queenstown. Simple menu, but has a good variety. It looks like they also have a sushi bar at lunchtime. Food came out fast. The ramen were excellent, gyuoza and chicken karage were good too. Great service

Love the ramen here! And the prawn tempura. We live in QT and this is our fave Japanese restaurant. They have a sushi bar and can also order from the menu. We tried the spicy seafood udon and the chef’s sushi/sashimi platter but found ourselves too full to finish the sushi (after eating ramen). Great selection of food, drinks and sake. 😅 Highly recommended.

Looking for a lunch place, our last day in Queenstown found this dainty japanese eating nook. Service was quick and our bentos served in a flash. I recommend others to try when in town. NZ Covid 19 protocols were followed.

We were really impressed at the sushi on offer. There were a wide variety of sushi rolls and nigiri to choose from. We settled for a few sushi and nigiri as appetiser while waiting for our ramen. The sushi was large and flavourful. The tonkotsu ramen broth was good, but the seafood ramen was lacking in depth, hence the 4 star.

Two of us dined at Hikari, we wanted some authentic "easy food" like we would get in Tokyo or Osaka. We reserved in advance, on arrival the staff had reserved the best table in the restaurant for us. After talking with the waitress, we were so impressed - we cook a little Japanese at home and she knew more about the cooking process and ingredients than we did. It was clear she had outstanding menu knowledge. And along with the young man she was working with were so bright, friendly and kind. We ordered the Chicken Katsu, Miso Ramen, Pork Gyoza, Salmon Sashimi, seaweed salad and a huge 500ml glass of Asahi.
The food was simply amazing, fresh and authentic and not modified for local I could see the chef preparing the Sashimi fresh rather than pre-prepared. I could see the fine grade of Panko on the Katsu on the chicken, thin but juicy (that is how it should be), which only skilled chefs can produce. The salmon was cut in the correct direction along the fillet, making it melt in my mouth as we ate with the genuine wasabi - again not so common. They catered to our preferences leaving some ingredients out that we preferred not to eat.
What we loved: the Japanese staff, who were so knowledgeable at service and skilled in preparation of food. Professional chefs, there was no pre-prepared food we could see. You know they are focussed when the chef is watching your reaction as you take the first bite of his sashimi. They even hand make to order their sushi, which I have never seen anywhere else in nz. The quality of food was outstanding, having been to Queenstown many times we believe we have discovered a hidden gem.
We have eaten at top Japanese restaurants and can say there are few Japanese restaurants in nz putting put food as authentic as you will find here.
Our bill for all of that food and drink came to $92.50, very good for two mains, three sides and their largest beer.
We discovered they do Unagi (eel) don, so we will be back tomorrow

Good sushi and sashimi set. Fish is quite fresh and thickly cut. Appears to be Korean run but who cares if the food is good.
Portions are good and service is prompt and efficient. We got our meals pretty quickly after ordering.
Reasonably priced Japanese restaurant in Queenstown compared to most other places here. It's hard to find a place that doesn't charge an arm and a leg in this tourist town.

It blows my mind that this place doesn’t have better reviews. Best ramen/maki/gyoza that I’ve had in the southern hemisphere. The service was excellent as well. I would recommend the spicy pork ramen with an extra serve of noodles and especially the spicy tuna roll. As I said gyoza was also top notch. Wish I could come here more often; haven’t been this full and content with a meal in ages.

Great and delicious Japanese food, it was amazing. And the price was also good. Actually there is a discount until end of Mai 20% visit the Facebook page

Wide range of sushi and lunch menu has some good options. However, the dinner menu is huge, full with options for everyone. Highly recommend going here with friends for a dinner date
B.
Popped in here for a spontaneous late night dinner as everything was closing up and boy we were surprised! Amazing service, amazing sushi. My only regret is that I didn't try the other menu items but I will be returning to try there don bori bowls and curry!

It looks like an ordinary small restaurant in Queenstown. But the food that we ordered is the best Japanese food that we had in New Zealand. Sashimi is very fresh.
M.
Had their lunch bento which was at a decent price. Fast service & food was tasty.
R.
A good choice to have Japanese cuisine. Katsu was crispy and well-battered, bento had a variety of side dishes. Staff were friendly and attentive. Would like to visit again.

This place has good night out food, with very pleasant and generous staff. Food was a bit delayed, however staff were apologetic and provided us with additional dumplings, really lovely of them to offer this.
C.
Best sushi I've had since arriving in New Zealand. Solid portions and creative twists to conventional sushi.
Nice atmosphere and friendly staff too.
S.
Absolutely the best Japanese restaurant with such reasonable price in the town! We have came here for second time during our trip!
E.
Lovely fresh food, friendly staff, highly recommended for sushi lovers. Nice vegetarian option for me

Came this sushi bar at 3.15pm
The food was good but I can’t take it more higher for the rate
Just 3 stars

Absolutely gorgeous little Japanese place. Food is not just super tasty but also very reasonably priced. After purchasing the (chicken) Katsu Don at only 14.90, I was convinced I was coming back again. The chicken was so fresh, melt-in-your-mouth tender and well seasoned. The panko crumb was crispy and crunchy, and the Katsu sauce was perfect with the Japanese Mayo.
Service was quick, attentive and with a smile. Definitely worth a visit.

Very busy and Little bit pricey due to holiday seasons. Although, the quality of sushi is excellent

While holidaying in Queenstown, the girls wanted to eat Japanese food, especially the Udon and Ramen noodles. We located two Japanese restaurant but one of them didn't serve the noodles for dinner so we went to this restaurant. The food and service was good.
I.
The Udon is nice, the tempura and katsu cooked perfectly. Good presentation. Sauces are on the (rather) sweet side.
R.
Food was heavenly. Will definitely be returning. One request, please open in Nelson
K.
Generous portions, good value, friendly staff. Perfect! ☺️
B.
What a find! The bento didn't look much when it was served (we were hungry! LOL) BUT it was actually quite filling by the time we were done eating. Lots of flavor in every bite. ❤

Having been to Japan a couple of times, I was really hoping to find something authentic that would remind me of the great time I had in Japan. This is exactly what I found when I went here. Loved the food, no regrets eating here. The staff were polite and friendly especially when handling an extremely fussy and rude family a couple of tables over.
s.
Food is average, we had agedashi tofu, Spider roll and Prime beef, serving portion is average and price is okay for Queenstown. They have high chair and staff was super friendly to baby. The place was very accommodating which we were very grateful for, especially coz our baby was throwing tantrum when we needed to eat. Thanks!
E.
Such a good little spot! Cheap, fresh self serve sushi, nice service and absolutely love the reusable/waste free everything - chopsticks, wasabi pot instead of packets, even cardboard takeaway boxes instead of plastic. Highly recommended!!
S.
Good restaurant, fine service, good food. Sushi bar was not open when we were there, so we settled for something else that surprised us in a good way. Checken was very tender and also the Bento platter was good.
D.
Ramen was excellent! Good portion size and very tasty. Highly recommend
B.
Tasty but expensive. Do not get the shabu shabu to share. The sushi rolls are great and so were the sashimi. Service was great! Loved the vibe inside. But 25 for a ramen?! Take it off the menu so people don't leave with a sour taste.
A.
Some of the best sushi I have had in a long time - absolutely delicious! Highly recommended 😊
C.
So good!! Was really stoked they had vegetarian bento box option. However, they do not have as many sushi options as their competitors. However, I would definitely eat here again.
J.
Great place ever!
My girls love it, we almost came every day!
Udon is good! My mom and me enjoyed the food
And the staffs are always friendly to us!

The Teppanyaki restaurant in Frankton is fantastic. The food was delicious. The customer service was great and the chef was very entertaining. Highly recommended!! The beef and seafood teppan was incredible and the salmon was soooo fresh!

Omg we come to this place every time we come to Queenstown, the kids love it too!! My absolute favourite thing to eat is the Spicy Seafood Udon, it's so delicious, the udon noodles are the best 😋 Also big favourite date the teriyaki salmon or chicken don. Great value, fresh, delicious food & affordable 😊 The staff are so nice and welcoming too.
