Fantastic staff, lovely ambiance. Food wise, "snacks" were fine and even exciting Rest of the menu was promising, but in the end delivered decent food lacking a "wow" factor. Attached photos are of the two items from the "snack" section we tried, and are strongly recommend.

The food was brilliant, love the clam and cheese roll. However, the poor service almost destroyed everything. Joe served us and she didn't smile at all. I thought may be it's just her nature but when she served other tables, she squatted at the table and smiled all the way. I asked her recommendation on the menu and special of the day, she said that everything is on the menu and left with no word. I booked the table here because of the good experience from Onslow. Now I wonder whether I will come back to Rata again.

Rata is a restaurant you absolutely must visit. My friend and I agreed that our visit truly was the best restaurant experience we had ever had. Everything was exceptional. The customer service was so wonderful, the staff had such extensive knowledge of all the dishes and all of the drinks on offer. The environment is modern, moody, pretty, and comfortable. We tried four different cocktails which were the most delicious and flavourful we’d ever had. We tried snacks, starters, mains, a side and dessert and believe me when I say that we were blown away by every single dish. The flavours were so unique and extraordinary. The chef/s have true creative talent. Clearly it is run very well. We had not one complaint which is unusual. A MUST visit. Thank you Rata!

I can honestly say, this is one of my favourite experiences of dining. It started with the front of house welcoming my wife and I before the glass door opened. He was attentive and sharp in presentation. Then we sat down to an incredible session of flavours and sensations I can only describe as intoxicating. The waiting staff were friendly and equally attentive to what we wanted and described every plate or glass with passion. Cannot recommend highly enough. Well done guys. Love having this quality in NZ.

Delicious. Rata offers contemporary New Zealand cuisine in a relaxed modern environment. We loved the cloudy bay Storm clams (absolutely sensational, we’d go back for a drink and Storm clams in a heartbeat), king fish crudo (the sauce was the star, tangy with a real kick) fried Brussel sprouts and the Merino Lamb Shank (one large serving ideal for sharing at the table). Staff were friendly and very accommodating.

Visited Rata with my wife on a First table deal and felt bad I didn't pay full price for such an amazing meal. Service was excellent but the food was the star of the show, compact tasting plates to start which were full of unique flavors and spectacular presentation. Highly recommended.

From my point of view, this is the best restaurant in New Zealand. The food and cocktails were beyond delicious. The price is standard for this quality restaurant. I could not complain about anything here and will not try to look for it! Thank you for your hard work Rata’s team! I am your big fan.

Such a lovely experience! Manesh the waiter was absolutely awesome, professional, genuine and knowledgeable about the menu and what drink paired best with the dish. The food was delicious and we left feeling we had the real NZ Foodie experience.

Simply just the amazing experience. Amazing staff who helps us to find parking spaces. Amazing food! If you are wanting an all-round experience I would recommend getting the chefs sets, you get a variety of dishes to try out. Must try the duck sandwich and willington beef！ Great place for functions or a special date!

You have to book for this place. We were lucky to be passing through and asked if there were any tables left that night as the online booking system saying it was full so probably best to call instead. Service was great. The clams were yummy and octopus was good too. I had the beef it was perfect the sauce was a little bit too rich for me.

Excellent food and service. Have been to Rata a few times now over a few years and they consistently deliver beautiful plates of food and amazing cocktails.

The best restaurant in Queenstown. The service was and is always fantastic. From the entree through to dessert the meal we had was flawless. The wine list was amazing too. I can recommend the beef short rib to share and the merino was also amazing. We had great food and drinks. I'll be coming back again and again. Fantastic.

Every part of this dining experience was perfect. From the moment we walked in we felt like we were treated like royalty. We were celebrating our recent nuptials and thanks to a favour we were lucky enough to get a table. We sat at the bar for a drink prior to sitting at our table. In our opinion we had the most romantic seat in the house. When you look at the wine list - it is simply phenomenal. We like buttery Chardonnay and they had all our favourites. With respect to the staff and waitress, we basically said this is the type of food we like and they did the rest. You could tell that they really care about the diner and listen well. Would highly recommend but overall the evening was flawless. Try and get a reservation every time you are in Queenstown.

We were looking forward to have lunch in Rata due to the glowing reviews and we weren't disappointed to have spent a special occasion (birthday) in this beautiful restaurant. First of all, they made a dessert that wasn't supposed to be on the menu for lunch (I checked the menu on the website beforehand and thought they would serve the chocolate dessert for lunch but it was only served for diner which I didn't know). As it was my birthday, they made an exception which was really considerate ! The service was perfect and the overall experience unforgettable. Just make sure to book beforehand as the restaurant can be packed due to its success.

Exceptional dining experience!! The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated with a tasteful mix of seating. All the staff are fantastic; helpful, courteous and efficient. Then the food...whoa!! We had the 3 course lunch menu and every dish was delightful, beautifully presented and very, very tasty. Very good wine and drinks menu to compliment your meal. Would be back in this restaurant in a heartbeat.

Simply the best meal we've had anywhere in New Zealand in 5 visits to both islands over the past decade. Every course was magnifcent, the food and wine superb, and the room just lovely. We came for lunch, attracted by the insanely cheap offer of 3 course for $48 (about the same price as a main at dinner) and had the restaurant bargain of a lifetime - line caught kingfish crudo and Big Glory Bay salmon for starters, pan fried blue cod for mains, and the torched meringue for dessert. Gluten-free was no problem, with around 3/4 of the dishes suitable as is, or with a slight modification. Everything was superb and even at full dinner prices, this would still be a great bargain, due to the quality of the food, the presentation, and the wonderful service. We will be back.

Just the best in Queenstown. The food was fantastic as always sure, music great, but the best thing was the service we received. The young lady that looked after us was Nika and her smile even from behind a mask was wonderful. Nothing was a problem. Totally recommend.

Absolutely amazing Kiwi fine dining. An enhanced, incentive menu featuring local ingredients served in interesting and innovative ways. The lunch menu is incredible value: 3 courses fit NZ$45. They could easily charge twice that. Great wine, beer and spirits list too. A must if you're visiting Queenstown.

The best restaurant I've tried in recent times! The best one in Queenstown, definitely! Expensive, but for special occasions worth it. The environment, the menu, the service, the food 😍. Everything perfect.

Food was absolutely stunning. Service is friendly and prompt. Poppy, who was looking after me, was extremely helpful and brought excellent service (Shame that the mask covered her beautiful smile 😊). The whole FOH team was attentive and experienced. I was fascinated with the experience here. Totally love it. One of the best fine-dining restaurant in QT.

Sometimes the perks of traveling alone are walking into the hottest restaurant in town and being able to snag a seat at the bar! I'm glad they could squeeze me in because the food was excellent. The goat cheese profiteroles were phenomenal, I wish I would gave gotten 2 orders! The crispy ox tongue was delicious. The capers added a nice acidity to the plate. My only complaint with this dish is you could give this to a 3 year old and tell them it was chicken nuggets and they probably couldn't tell the difference. I understand the idea if eating tongue can be offputting to some but I personally would have enjoyed more of a presence of what I was eating, taste was though it was delicious. Torn between the Venison and the Lamb I decided to go with what's harder to get at home, in this case the Venison. The venison was perfectly prepared and everything on the plate whet together harmoniously. My only complaint was that I left still hungry, but no body is saying that always a bad thing. 10/10 would return again!

Went there for lunch today and was a very special experience. The starter main and desert were all incredible tasting and presentation was spotless. The service was as good as the cooking we had Joe on the front who was super helpful in walking us through the menu and explaining the food made us feel very welcome one of our waiters was a guy called Daiki who also provided great service and chased me out the door with my hat I left behind in the heavy rain. This is a must do in Queenstown and a great fine dining experience.

Had the pleasure to dine here. Service is excellent, every detail was noticed and completed without asking (empty water cups, dishes etc) the amount of detail from the waitress was amazing! Also let's not forget about the food - Beef Wellington is a must!!

Rata dining is simply one of the best dining experiences in New Zealand! Situated in Queenstown, you enter a world of foodie delights as the chef plays with traditional dishes, applying different fusions and amazing combinations... one example is the blue cheese ice cream, but there are many others. The staff are awesome, friendly and professional and the sommelier just wonderful... a real special night! Thanks!!!!

Came to Rata for our wedding anniversary. Waitresses were extremely helpful in introducing the dishes. Ordered the clams, Seafood boulabaisse, Beef Fillet, side of potatoes and the apple crumble for dessert. The menu changes so you have to dine in to see what they have. Drinks menu was very extensive as well. They also prepared a little dessert for our anniversary which was a nice touch. Great food, ambience and overall experience!

Such a special and lovely meal! How I would love to return. The staff was extremely professional and kind. Very knowledgeable. The food and ingredients were all seasonal, local, and too quality and so beautifully presented. The meat dishes like the duck were lovely, but I do wish I could return for the beef Wellington (they had run out!) as well as the lobster pasta, which I tried and wish I could have had seconds. Great place for special gatherings or a romantic date.

By far the best meal I've had in NZ. Delicious, whimsically creative food for a very reasonable price. It is not cheap! But it is far less expensive than what you get. The wait staff was wonderful, kind, and informative. The ambiance of the restaurant was also interesting enough to be noteworthy. I have been consistently underwhelmed with NZ restaurants but Rata was a shining star. I am very glad I didn't give up the hunt for a fun, elegant meal in nz.

Rata has been on my bookmarked list of fine dining restaurants in Queenstown to visit since I saw photos and reviews when it first opened (I can’t remember how long ago now). For various reasons, it becomes a last minute decision on our last night in Queenstown. Initially, over the phone, the lovely maître d’, Claire, is only able to accommodate my son and I at the bar, which is fine with us. When we turn up however, despite having the places set at the bar, she kindly offers us a vacant table that isn’t required until 8:30pm - Perfect! We had eaten some late afternoon snacks elsewhere after a long bike ride, so we are happy to have just main courses tonight. The two ciders on offer are both enjoyed as we wait the estimated 20mins for our meals to arrive. I opt for the Te Mana rack of lamb, onion tart tatin, smoked onion purée, salsa verde yoghurt, and Ty takes the Glazed beef cheek, red cabbage, Canterbury truffle, garlic crumb, quick brown fox jus. We supplement these with sides of charred organic cauliflower, and the beetroot and goats cheese salad. I also leave the choice of red wine to accompany my lamb in the hands in of our waiter, and I’m very happy with a robust Pinot noir, served in the largest special Pinot glass on the planet! Overall, each mouthful of each dish came together like a well orchestrated symphony of flavours, textures and colour. There is a lot of quiet moaning and each of us thinks our own choice is the best. The beef cheeks are incredibly tender, yet holding their shape, and my lamb is beautifully pink, succulent and flavoursome. All the components of our plates just seem to harmonise magically, leaving us very satisfied. Full marks to the front of house, and back of house teams for making it an experience to treasure for a very long time.

We had a wonderful time at Rata. It was a great experience with delicious 3 course meal. It was made special by the warm and friendly service by the staff. Enjoyed the tomato bread! The vegan menu was a bonus!

I wanted to reserve a table for dinner but it's been full booked, therefore I had lunch instead. All the dish they served was amazing two thumbs up 👍. Perfect balance 👍. I had pork belly the skin is so so crispy I never had this perfectly balanced pork belly anymore. Wanted to go one more time but couldn't.

I loveeee Rata, easily one of the best restaurants in Queenstown, every dish was amazing, the clams are a must try. We got the sharing lamb dish and it was huge and so good.

We tried this sublime Queenstown eatery which we heard was one of the best in town. It absolutely didn't disappoint with one of the most delicious starters ever (goats cheese profiteroles) and the duck breast feast which was a sublime and perfectly cooked duck breast served with a chorizo and white bean confit. The food was just enough to keep you satisfied and the price was extremely reasonable for fine dining. Do yourself a favour and eat here!

Rata was the best place we ate at in New Zealand. The food was fantastic. The atmosphere was well thought out. The staff was friendly and helpful. Just fyi, they did have a vegetarian menu but you need to ask for it. They also had excellent non alcoholic drinks.

Subtle depths of flavor and intricate but very kiwi modern food. Best tartare I've had anywhere in NZ, with coriander and wasabi peas adding a unique spin without overwhelming the perfectly seasoned meat. Go for the lunch for value - 2 or 3 courses for a very reasonable set price! In my opinion, the best food in Queenstown.

A consistency in the quality of food and service delivered. Always had a great time there. The restaurant is prepared for larger group and easily offers a set menu with options for all dietary requirements (vegetarian, pescaterian, gluten free, nuts allergy). I've experienced the three aspects of dinning at Rata (lunch with a friend, dinner with the other half, lunch staff party). Never been disappointed.

One of our highlight meals in queenstown and they didn't disappoint us. We had blanched octopus and smoked eel for entree and the salmon for main. Definitely worth the wait!!

Lots of hype around Rata so I was pretty excited... and wasn’t disappointed! It was pretty delish. Yummy cheese log was my surprise favourite- so creamy! Like the styling too. Lovely night out.

They have a special vegetarian menu which is thoughtful and some of their fish is line caught which is a nice touch. We had excellent service and the music playlist was on point. Definitely a high quality spot if you want to pay up for the highest quality ingredients prepared in a simple yet elegant way.

Great fine dining experience. Food was good, enjoyed initially but became satiated quickly as it was too heavy tasting for my Asian Chinese tastebud. Would suggest asking the waitresses on the lighter options.

Wow. The food is absolutely incredibly delicious and well presented. The cod is to die for and the venison is cooked to perfection. Must also try the hot buttered rum cocktail!

We got the beef Wellington “feast” and loved it. Walked in on a Saturday at 6pm and we were seated right away. Great service and the food was amazing.

We looked for a nice restaurant in Queenstown to celebrate a friend’s birthday and we chose Rata mainly due to the very good google review. As tourists, we reserved our table almost two months in advance via email. We received very polite and quick responses from Rata, and the staff kindly told me a complimentary dessert plate will be offered to the birthday girl. We were very pleased with the arrangement and very looked forward to the lunch. The birthday lunch took place on 13 Feb. We were greeted by a very cheerful receptionist. Our table was served by a young waiter. To begin with, the waiter was polite and took our orders efficiently and professionally. It took the kitchen a while to prepare our food, we didn’t mind at all because the food was beautifully presented and tasted so good. After our starters, we started to notice that the waiter who was responsible for our table changed his attitude suddenly. He ignored us completely and avoided any eye contact with us. We had no idea what made him dislike us so suddenly. He served us main courses and removed our empty plates with a poker face, stopped to refill our water glasses and didn’t follow up our desserts. It was odd and embarrassing. It turned out we had to ask other waitress (who was not responsible for our table) to bring us our desserts and bill. The complimentary birthday dessert plate was not served and we didn’t bother to ask. Food was excellent, but the waiter’s poor service made our lunch at Rata a bad experience.

Excellent fine dining. The lamb was done to perfection with good sides to match. The starters with the salmon and hamachi was awesome.

o glad that I went ahead to make a reservation despite reading some comments on how the restaurant requires a deposit and is not service oriented. Once we got there it was an overall pleasant experience and the food is outstanding for the prices compared to other wannabe fine dining restaurants and bistros. Catered well to my mum's vegetarian and no allium diet. The rest of us shared has the special scallop, beef tartare, asparagus, kingfish crudo and the cheese roll which was interesting. Mains - beef fillet, lamb rump, pork belly, duck, and the vegetarian cauliflower risotto. They are supposed to be known for their cocktails too. The Pinot Gris (Ostler Lakeside) we had was divine. Desseets - Peanut Butter Parfait, Chocolate Fondant and Lemon Macaron which I really liked.

A great place for a special occasion withouy being stuffy. The food was excellent and well cooked. Had the Feast menu and my party had food babies at the end of it. And the treacle bread was divine - would have more if I had a choice Highly recommended!

For this price, it is definitely 5 stars. The food was de-li-cious, the service amazing and the sourroundings in their garden area outside beautiful on a sunny day. We asked the waitress for wine tasting recommandations and she (excitedly) wrote us an entire list of places around Queenstown and explained what they were all known for. ❤️ Food was maybe 4,5 stars but the service increased it to 5 ☺️

Lovely service by staff from start to finish. Did not require booking for a weekday lunch for 4 people. Pictured below is the chicken breast with truffle mushroom sauce, gnocchi and broccolini which was sensational! We also had the kingfish and salmon starters which were SUPERB! Friends thoroughly enjoyed the beef cheek and pork belly as well. 🌟5/5🌟 for the atmosphere and ambience as well. Overall, a lovely and memorable experience

There's a reason every local whistled when I mentioned we were going to Rata for dinner, and it's because they knew we were in for a treat. Absolutely fantastic 4 course meal. Great service and cocktails. Only complaint is the room can get a bit noisy. Highly recommend!

Lovely service and great food. You'll need to book in advance we called in the afternoon and they were already fully booked but made room for us at the bar at 9pm. It was very comfortable and great place to watch the kitchen.

Had octopus, beef cheek, and dark chocolate tart as my set lunch for 45 nzd, very beautifully plated, but here is where presentation is not everything. All three courses had a theme, bitter. First starter octupus, quite delightful I could taste the berry and sour cream kinda zest in the crispy octopus, that's until the bitterness, I think it's from the mint leaf. The beef cheek I think the chef is completely up to the diner to put salt, as it was really plain, and it got slight old meat aftertaste, however, gotta say the beef is really soft, comparable to tofu in a good way. The dark chocolate tart is quite disappointing, maybe is different in NZ, but when you say tart I expect the the crust to be crust, not soggy pastry soak in wet butter.. service is top notch, presentation is amazing, but flawed taste and flavor. I most likely spend my 45 NZD else where next time I visit Queenstown..

Surely one of the best restaurants in the country. Very welcoming hospitable staff with just the right amount of attention. Small menu with a big range of flavor, something to suit anyone. Food was excellent, recommend the apple desert. Big selection of wines to choose from. A must visit in Queenstown.

Just WOW!! Perfect! Great menu, really well executed, staff were friendly and knowledgeable, attentive without being overbearing. Great selection of wines by the glass, but OMG the food, just so good. One of the best value for money meals I’ve ever had, can’t recommend this place highly enough.

We came here after our wedding (still dressed up from the wedding) and from the get go we were treated phenomenally. The staff were exceptional and incredibly attentive and not the mention that the actual food was out of this world. They even gave us a surprise glass of champagne on the house and even a congratulations dessert! I really couldn't describe how incredible the whole experience was without doing it a disservice. All I will say is you MUST try Rata at least once!

Food is great service is ok. You need to book well in advance this Josh Emmett restaurant is very popular especially in winter. Location is back behind the main st shops on the gtound floor so access is good. Staff were pleasant but only a few professional.

Best restaurant I have been to in years! I went with a large group and we had one of the set menu feasts. Everything we ate was fantastic from the bites we had as starters to the 3 main dishes. The slow cooked lamb was an absolute standout. The desserts were great and the wines too. Staff are very friendly and also attentive.

The food and service was outstanding! We visited last week on holiday to Queenstown from Sydney. A pleasantly memorable experience and I loved absolutely every dish. Definitely my top recommendation to family and friends when they visit NZ!

Been visiting Rata now and then for lunch since 2012. We even had our wedding reception there in 2015. Still amazing food, service and atmosphere.

Rātā is over rated. The staff were pleasant enough & the decor was lovely. However it’s not often when I look at the menu at places like this & something doesn’t stand out. Here I couldn’t pick anything I liked so we picked what we thought would at least be nice. The goat cheese profiteroles were just odd. Too salty. The mains were small & we were still hungry post them. The dessert menu was boring. We ordered just because I wanted something sweet to end the night & turned out to be dry mini muffins with a teensy bit of cream. A birthday disaster with a lot of money spent on a subpar meal

The food and service is exceptional, however a few acoustic baffles would really elevate the experience. We were sat next to a table with 10, extremely loud 40th attendees, and my partner and I literally could not hear each other or our lovely waitress the entire night. Would love to come back, but only if there is better acoustics!

If I could rate them 6 I would. Most incredible dining experience i’ve had. Update: Went back here over the new year, standards have dropped a heap. Food was all over the place, flavours especially with the entrees didn’t go together.

Had dinner there on Friday night, food was top notch, especially the Blue Cod. Staff were very attentive but subtle at the same time so didn’t feel over zealous which was great. Great wine selection and the staff well clued up on that. One of the top two Queenstown restaurants in my view. Highly recommended.

This was the best dining experience I've ever had. We received a very warm greeting when we stepped in the door and the excellent service continued from there. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable about the food and wine. We had the lamb to share and it fell off the bone, it was so tender. Dessert was amazing and the lemon meringue after dinner cocktail was delicious. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough!!

Best experience and amazing food! Our waiter Lisa was amazing, she explained everything that was in the dishes when they were served. The goats cheese profiteroles, cloudy bay storm clams and kingfish crudo were outstanding! Flavours and textures were on point. The apricot dessert and strawberry dessert were delicious too!

A place offered fine dinning but we were unlucky that we had a cold faced waiter serving us.

The whole experience was 5*. Had the steak tartar and the pork belly.. Wow. Also really recommend the capoeira cocktail!

What a lovely dining experience! We came here for a couples double date. The earliest we could get in after booking a few days before was 8.30pm, so book early! We shared the cheese roll starter and goats cheese starter. The cheese roll in particular was incredible - a sophisticated, interesting and very tasty take on a “cheese roll”. Must have! There was a good range of mains although only one vegetarian which was pasta (which I don’t like) so I had an assortment of vegetarian sides - this was tasty but would have been nice to have another vegetarian option. The fish main and lamb main were raved about. The wine menu was refined but lovely. The wait staff were friendly and professional. It was a lovely dining experience.

Amazing Dinner, I would highly recommend this restaurant, I went with a group of 5 friends. This is a fine dining restaurant without being pretentious. The service, food, drinks, atmosphere was all 10 out of 10. I had the kingfish and hapuka, my friends had the beef, lamb, cheese roles and goat cheese profiteroles and everyone raved about their meal. This was the highlight of our Queenstown trip!

Food & Service were really good! My partner and I came for the Lunch Set, we have chosen the 3 course meal with a Starter, Main and Dessert. The portions were all satisfying and the taste was amazing. If you were to decide have an enjoying lunch with your partner, please do not miss out this place. Definitely the best food experience I've had, ever. No argument! Every dish was a mouthwatering taste experience. I was fortunate to be in the Co-pilots seat on a trip to Miford Sound today - fantastic as it was, it didn't approach the dizzy heights of the taste sensations we experienced at Rata this evening. Initially I was in trouble for not booking earlier for another Qtown popular venue that my partner wanted to go to - but, I won all the credits for getting it right with Rata! To cap it off, Lisa, and all the staff were top of their game. Forget about adventure tourism, I want to come back to Qtown for the Rata dishes that I've yet to experience.

This was probably our best culinary experience on the south island. The food was delicious and thoughtfully prepared. The only negative is that the waitress forgot about our wine and we were not served until after our appetizers had already arrived. Overall a great experience, though!

This has been the best food I have ever eaten. The treacle bread was to die for. The cheese roll starter was frankly the king of cheese rolls, and the merino shoulder shared main was better than I could have possibly expected and continued to be so the whole way through - I've never had lamb before that you could cut with a spoon. The atmosphere is absolutely relaxing. The service was fantastic, with a waiter who seemed to be able to read our minds and was perfectly attentive - no random checks on how well we were doing, but also always there when we wanted something. I feel like if I fell asleep from over-eating I would be safe and cared for by friends, and ye gods did I want to over-eat. Genuinely disappointed that I couldn't possibly keep ordering mains for the rest of the night. Thank you Rātā.

Absolutely fantastic dinner. We had such a delightful experience from start to finish. We both had wonderful cocktails and great local wines. The lamb and venison were both cooked to perfection and paired wonderfully with delicious sides. A wonderful night!

Beautiful, delicious food in a lovely, comfortable setting. It's a set lunch. 2 courses or 3 courses. Each course had 3 options. For starters we all had a rolled up warm cheesy thing, which was delicious. For mains, 2 of us had the lamb, 2 had the pork belly and 1 had fish. All were delicious. 3 of us had the 3 courses, and had cheese to finish. Beautiful cheese, but very little of it. None of the courses were close to big. And no way to order anything extra for big eaters. The staff was very friendly and very knowledgeable about the food and had excellent wine recommendations. They were very accommodating as well, willing to tailor the cheeses selected to personal taste. It's expensive though, and because it's not a big menu, I wouldn't take children there or very fussy eaters. I also wouldn't recommend it for vegetarians and I'd avoid it if vegan. To be fair, we didn't inquire about a special menu. But if you have special dietary needs, I'd call first. And again, it's a pricey lunch.

This dinner was superb. Jacob was our server and bartender (we sat at the bar) and he was truly a delight. His cocktail making skills are out of this world and his demeanor made the meal wonderful, easy and fun. The food was delicate and subtly complex. Simply gorgeous. Highly recommend. Wish we could go back again tomorrow night.

The food was phenomenal (Cloudy Bay Clams, King Fish crudo , Southland Cheese Roll, Te Mana Lamb Loin and 55 Day aged Beef Fillet, were some of our favourites) all accompanied by fantastic friendly service! Rata is exceptional! My husband and I went there for dinner on our last night in Queenstown. We don’t get to go to places like Rata very often and often when we do we are let down with some part of the experience. The team at Rata are highly skilled and very attentive! Perfect in every way. Hubby loves his food and wine and always orders a rare steak. His steak was cooked to “marshmallow like”perfection. Our entire meal was delicious. We could not fault a thing, and the flavours were incredible. The wine he had was 12:21 and he thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you Rata for giving us a wonderful experience.

One of my favorite restaurants around the globe, been here two years ago and returned again on this trip to Queenstown. Why is it so good? - Outstanding service. Food was outstanding. Resturant itself was very comfortable and welcoming. The wait staff was charming. We would return without question. One small problem, which was handled in the end, (thank you) was the beef wellington. It was perfectly done and delicious however the time is longer than expected. Plan for at least an hour from time of order.

Received warm welcome immediately we stepped in to the restaurant. Wait staff were very helpful and attentive for our dietary requests, able to tell us in detail about the ingredients we avoided. We also received a special sweet platter for our birthday boy. I personally loved seafood and the roasted pork here very much. Fantastic food and portion sizes. I would highly recommend eating here. Unfortunately though I found something solid in my food like a piece of olive pit. Having bit down on it and hurting my tooth my wife who works in the industry suggested that we let the kitchen know. We joked with each other and said that if this was a Michelin test it would have been a problem. The reason for the rating is that we felt as if the staff considered it to be a plant. I do not appreciate having my integrity questioned.

We went twice during our short 4 days stay in Queenstown. We enjoyed both dinners. Sophisticated food but very clean taste. Nice chat with the staff at te bar. Nice cocktails and good wine. I usually add: if you expect huge ordinary food avoid the place. But if you appreciate contemporary, creative cuisine then GO! It’s the right place. Lovely desserts.

We booked Rata a few weeks in advance of our trip to Queenstown. Our waiter (oops, we failed to get his name) was fantastic - very friendly, engaging, attentive, knowledgeable and gave excellent recommendations! The clams were the favourite, closely followed by the goats cheese profiteroles, and with perfectly matched wine, we were not disappointed by any aspect! Thoroughly recommended as a very affordable fine dining experience!

We had dinner here last night and cannot fault it. The food was absolutely amazing. Amazing, amazing. All the staff were attentive, friendly and accommodating and our wonderful waitress Loretta was just fantastic. Thank you for an amazing experience that I can’t wait to tell friends about.

Brilliant. The waitstaff knew their wines and were expert at helping us match with our meal choices with great results. Given how delicious the food was and the overall experience and presentation (even down to the music selection) the prices were very reasonable too. Next time we're in Queenstown we'll be back without a doubt!

Great atmosphere beautifully presented food but unfortunately out of our group of four well traveled Aucklanders, two described their entrees as bland tasting. For the mains, the aged steak was sliced into two 100cm dia very thin slices, rare but also tasteless. $400 which included a couple of beers & a bottle of local pinot noir at $85 but no dessert, we left feeling disappointed.

Did the Veuve Cliquot lunch and was amazing. Excellent work Josh!

Great meal, awesome ambiance! Rata is probably the best restaurant in Queenstown, albeit it is not cheap. It has a modern and inviting atmosphere with a nature elements inside. Great menu and friendly staff. Although we sat at the bar, we felt part of the restaurant and actually could catch a glimpse of the kitchen and how the food was skillfully plated. 5-stars!

I can not say enough about Rata! What a beautiful experience. Gorgeous setting away from the hustle and bustle of main street Queenstown. The food was stunning BUT the serving staff were amazing. We were blown away. Thank you all very much especially Meg. She really was a star. The complimentary glass of wine. What blew me away was the wee treat right at the end. Little things that mean a lot and that blew me away. If you want a fantastic experience then I really recommend. Will definitely go back when in Queenstown.

We booked a special online and pretty much emailed from there on in. Food was delicious. We paid for a 3 course meal. We all loved the clam entree The duck main was plentiful and yum and the pork belly a delight too. The honey clusters in the dessert were lovely tasteful surprises and the cheeseboard a lovely taster. We thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it. Not a byo but we still bought their wine. Enjoy as we did!

Great ambience and amazing food, no regrets coming to Rata at all! The receptionist was very nice to give us a table(for 4) although we did not complete the booking online. Knocked off 1 star because our host was rather cold and doesn’t seem as jolly as her colleagues. We had lotsa dishes and would like to highlight a few that’s not to be missed- Storm clams, Beef Wellington and the Hogarth chocolate fondant. Overall still an amazing night, a place not to be missed if you’re touring Queenstown.

We visited the restaurant out of curiosity - due to abundance of positive reviews. Food was good - well balanced with flavors and tasteful. Service was attentive and accommodative - hostess was able to provide us with table without reservation. But for relaxed dinner would be nice to have music - live or background at least. And what happened to white table cloths? What is the difference, besides doubled price, between this restaurant and other regular, less advertised establishments?

We had an early dinner with a 9m old baby and the team were amazing in looking after us. The kingfish starter was definitely a highlight. Only lowlight was that we couldn’t stay for dessert. A must visit for Queenstown.

Get a double serving of the charcoal butter bread, it's incredible. We all shared the beef wellington special which was delicious. Unfortunately there wasn't room in our stomachs to enjoy the cheese selection, which is wheeled over to your table to choose from. The mocktail was delicious, as were the cocktails I hear. Make a booking, as it's popular - not cheap though.

You like fresh food with a twist in a cozy setting and excellent service? This is your place! We literally loved every dish. Went with a toddler who was very welcome. They’ve a nice kids menu. Only thing that always throws me off when looking at the bill afterwards: $10 for a large bottle of water, $4.50 for a nice freshly squeezed juice - $6 for a glass of milk for the kid. Seems a little off. Otherwise: Couldn’t have had a more pleasant experience!

An amazing ending to our New Zealand trip. Rata hit 5 stars in every category in my opinion; from staff, pace of service, & flavor. The beef wellington is the best I've had, beating Gordon Ramsay Steak restaurant in Vegas. If you have time in Queenstown, definitely try all the popular cheap eats, but if you can splurge on one meal, Rata should be your choice.

We had the most amazing lunch here during our trip to Queenstown. It was so good we went back again the next day. Extremely tasty food along with great service make it for a must visit if in Queenstown. Wine list is well priced.

My wife and I had an absolutely wonderful time here as our last dinner in New Zealand We had a few appetizers and then went with their feast special beef Wellington, then a dessert, which was plenty for the two of us. All the food we had was great and was designed for sharing. Everything's a bit pricey but service is great, good atmosphere and great food and cocktails. If we're ever back in Queenstown we will definitely come back here.

I planned a dinner for 21 people on the 29th of December 2017. Rata were excellent to deal with, happily accommodating the large group booking including those with dietary restrictions. We had the $85 Feast menu which had generous portions and delicious food. By far the best meal in the South Island for our large group. I would highly recommend Rata as showcasing NZ cuisine at its finest while not being pretentious.

This is a very famous restaurant that you need to book long in advance. It's worthwhile and all of the food is great. Cocktails we're pretty great too. Personally I thought Botswana butchery was slightly better for the price and easier to get a booking, but Rata is still awesome.

I had lunch here and it was fantastic ! Lamb was the most tasty food i've ever eaten. And the japanese guy's service was perfect. Because I've already eaten some food, I only ordered a glass of wine and lamb steak. I should have eaten appetizer and dessert.

Lovely experience after running the Queenstown half marathon in the morning. The service was attentive but relaxed. The wine list was comprehensive (we used Vivino to pick a wine, as there were so many good Central Otago pinots). The food was lovely, but I forgot to take photos of most of it. The venison dish (pictured) was only 24 hours old and very good. Highly recommended!

Fantastic service and waitresses very knowledgeable. Entree was delicious however the main was a little disappointing. The blue cod dish tasted great, however the texture of the cod was poor! The pork belly was also dry. Would think twice about returning.

On holiday’s from Sydney and I have to say that Rata is one of my new favourite restaurants. They were able to accomodate me with my nut allergy and made me feel relaxed. Food is epic. Highly recommend.

And Joe was the most incredible host to our table, energy, vibe and wine education was next level. Top-quality dining in the heart of Queenstown. We went for the lunch special, which was a steal at $38 for three courses (there was also the option of $28 for two courses). The wait staff were as friendly as we have come to expect in NZ, the food was incredible, and having lunch out in the Spring sunshine was just unbeatable.

The service was great and the floor staff were well trained and informed. The decor was beautiful, except the out of place nature wall. The flavour combinations worked well, My one issue was the dessert lacked the wow factor that the previous course had

The bluff oyster with horseradish cream 😚 cured salmon or venison carpacio with shiitake. 😍 finished with a beef short rib 🤗😋😍😢 so good. Definitely will be coming back. Terrific meal - everything that we ordered was delicious and cooked to perfection

We had the most friendly waitstaff, and an excellent meal - my portion was so large that I had no room for dessert, even though the cheese platter has some lovely selections available.

Flabbergasted in two opposite ways. One in positive with a serene and stylish interior and its scrumptious dishes we ordered which were way over our expectation. Well done Rata! The other one was quite NEGATIVE. Almost all the staff there were courteous and professional except one particular staff, Hana(we were so gobsmacked by her service that I asked her name). When we entered the venue, the manager led us to already set table pleasantly. We sat there with my baby sitting on a high chair. The staff came to us and handed over the menu with drink menu. We ordered two glass of wine and forgot to select our menu from the menu. Oh...that was when things got awry... the staff suddenly had a quite cross face and said “you should select one from them”with a unpleasant tone. That was when we realised that dinner time was not going to be pleasant for us. We both ordered and she came back again to take away the small sea salt stone bowl from our table. (My baby was playing with it so we already took it away from him and put it on the table. He was just playing with quite a few grains of salt.) With her cross face, without saying any word, she just pushed her arm into my wife’s front and grabbed it. Wow... we both were like ‘what is going on’... I could have told her at that time but then other staff brought our starter and she was kindly asking where we are from, how old my baby was and what his name was. With her friendly and sweet manner, we just tried to forget what the staff did to us. The starter was delectable. My baby started to make quite a noise so I instantly took him in my arms and walked to the bar where a bartender was busy making cocktail. I was there until my baby settled and went back to my table to have beautifully plated main menu. We were all happy with the main and my baby also looked quite happy too. When it was almost finished, my baby started to make some noise( not yelling ), so I stopped my eating and took care of him. When my wife almost finished hers, i handed over our baby to my wife to finish mine. My baby was standing next to our table looking out of the window with my wife precautiously. My baby was murmuring himself and touching an unoccupied table next to ours. My wife was stopping him from moving any serving utensils and she was doing her best if any thing was moved from its original place. That was when the staff came to me and told me to stop him and that he was making too much noise. If our baby was making other patrons unhappy, we both would feel deeply sorry for that. But he wasn’t yelling or screeching at all. Like at any other places where we all could see, he was just a normal baby doing what babies in their age(18months) do. And it was obvious that we both were doing our best not to disturb others. We couldn’t be there anymore with the staff making us so miserable. Talked to the manager what had happened and paid without having dessert to Escape from the staff. As a cafe owner myself and patron, I couldn’t understand her service attitude from the beginning and why she had to keep aggressive manner towards us. It was our last day in Queenstown where we made lots of unforgettable memories. But the staff also will be in our memory too who ruined our last day in Queenstown. I give three stars since all the other staff were kind and professional and its food was up to expectation.

Could not say nicer things about our dinner at Rata. Everything was perfect from entree through to dessert. The lamb shoulder for two was simply the best lamb roast I have ever eaten (seconded by my partner) and complimented perfectly by the pickled cabbage, polenta and roasted broccoli. The ambience is complimentary and the music played in the background was a great vibe (Bonobo, Four Tet etc). Staff were also very lovely and accomodating. Will be back for sure if ever back in Queenstown.

We had the lunch special, and it was amazing. I started with salmon pastrami, which melted in your mouth; it was paired with beetroot and cream cheese. The blue cod pie had good chunks of fish, and beautifully textured vegetables, with mash potato on top. The ginger steamed pudding combined warm with cold, and sweet with tangy.

Very good food, great selection of wines. Some of the dishes were way too salty for my taste (for ex. the vegetarian risotto and the goat cheese bignet). Staff was friendly and more attentive than NZ’s average.

Had the lamb for my main and the heirloom tomatoes with straciatella for my starter. Both were delicious! My starter was a surprise, their take on the caprese salad was just excellent. You could easily tell that they sourced quality ingredients.

Great restaurant, food was delicious and very unique! However, we expected wow effect, never happened. The only down side was venison carpaccio, I could not taste venison at all, portion was so small and venison so thin it actually glued to plate :( I tasted arugala and mayo only in the dish. Everything else was perfect.

The food was wonderful (as one would expect) the wait staff were good, but (you know it was coming) with food allergies I am very weary of restaurants that put the wrong order down in front of you. This happened to both courses on my first visit. Bit of a hiccup for a new restaurant, second visit the same thing happened and I decided, as my food allergies are not nice, I would not return to this restaurant. But sometime past and visitors of mine requested they take us to Rata as they had heard great things, I was happy to give it another go until my main came out and it wasn't what I had ordered (again) so how was I to know if my allergies had been remembered either. So I will not go back to Rata, very disappointing for a restaurant of this calibre.

Great restaurant. Good mix of interesting/unique (eg selection of snacks and starters) and traditional (beef Wellington - amazing). Service was good but not great, a couple of times where we got forgot about.

Food was great but nothing exceptional. What we didn't like is the one hour and thirty minutes wait for our main courses to arrive (it was fish). Really? Perhaps fine dining is tad different in this part of the world.

Atmosphere was good and the staff was very accommodating. Our waiter Jamie was very considerate, and took care of us. Bluff oysters were great!

Absolutely immaculate in all aspects - food, service, atmosphere. Cannot at all fault a damn thing! Word to the wise of cheese lovers: do order both the goat cheese profiteroles and the gruyere cheese roll, you'll not regret it.

AMAZING restaurant!! This is the restaurant owned by well known chef Josh Emmett. Service is fantastic the restaurant is beautiful. Can't wait to go back!! Starters were profiteroles stuffed with some sort of cheese and topped with manuka honey, smoked warehou croquettes, Salmon dish. Mains were venison, I had the pork belly (these were not the usual dishes!) sides of brussel sprouts topped with bacon bits, the best creamiest mashed potatoes ever. Dessert some sort of berry terrine - yummy anyway! Loads of french wine. Loads.

Best fine dining in Queenstown. We came here for our last night and were not disappointed. Portions are smaller and sides are not included. Carmel dessert was a lovely surprise.

I dined here 3 evenings in a row . The first time with a friend and the other nights as a solo diner sitting up at the lovely bar . The staff took care of me well and all three evenings I had delicious food . Must recommend.

i went there after a day at the snow cleaned up and was well dressed for the occasion with my partner. Being 19, we clearly look younger and from that i assume we weren't given very good service as the waiter at the time was rather rude to us. being the customer service the food was amazing.

Had such high hopes but was disappointed. Above average service but nothing more. The food was a real let down, tiny portions with little or no flavours, and expensive. We've been to plenty of top restaurants and this wasn't up there with them. We actually skipped dessert and went elsewhere.

Pleasant, well decorated environment in which to dine. Every facet of the dining area had clearly been carefully considered in order to create a relaxed "Southern landscape" feel. I found the menu a little clumsy, odd marriages of food left me searching for something that I actually wanted. The lamb that I chose as a main was cooked satisfactorily but the portion was pitifully small. Add to the lamb five mangetout, a teaspoon of labne rolled in rice and a tablespoon of swede and you have an expensive main course meal! Emperor's new clothes sprang to my mind. Perhaps I just didn't get it - there were plenty of people there who appeared to.

Incredibly beautiful spot, great for an outdoors lunch in summer (2 courses for $38, 3 courses for $45). Benefits from being 5 min away from the waterfront, quiet and peaceful, yet still just minutes from all the action.

Some hits but some def misses, good service, goats cheese starter was fantastic, pork croquettes were dry and lacked flavour, Brie desert was also pretty average unfortunately .

Had a delicious three course lunch at Josh Emett's acclaimed two hat restaurant Rata in Queenstown. Truly a feast for the eyes and the palate. Personal favourites were the Angus Beef Tartare and the Confit Duck Leg. Highly recommended and I will be sure to return next time I'm in town.

I loved the RESTURANT Rata, but there was one thing that could have improved. For example the RESTURANT looked breathtaking, the food was beautifully presented and the food tasted delicious. Like I said I did enjoy the RESTURANT and the food, but there was a waitress with blonde platinum hair that was a little bit snoopy with my mum, so my mum and I expected the blonde haired waitress to be friendlier and we say to ourselves, " Come on lady do not be snoopy." To be positive, my favourite food at Rata was the seared scotch fillet, and it was my favourite because the steak was rare and it had stunning flavours. I would recommend going to Rata because the food was good and the whole experience was great, I would rate this restaurant five out of five.

Food was sensational, service average and table in centre of restaurant only ordering alcohol was completely drunk and loud and out of control. Restaurant did nothing, highly unusual for a top restaurant.

Good food and service!

Reservation for Saturday night 30 August 2014 When called a week or so prior to book, told had to book at 6.30pm or 8.30pm as table would be required for a second sitting. Nearly did not bother but having been before and had an enjoyable time took it on the chin as father and son dinner pre Fathers day. Right from arriving was pushed to go to table, and told had to be out by 8.20pm. Barley sat down at 6.45pm taking half consumed drinks from bar to table and was rushed to order food, wine, everything. Then watched in awe as larger empty tables filled up at 7-15pm - 8pm that we could I assume have booked had we been a larger party. Basically shunted from the table back to the bar where we were offered complimentary drink to finsih off the meal. As we bumped into friends at Rata this worked for us. All in all if Rata is to be a fine dining or upmarket place to eat in Queenstown then a Valentines type "Sitting" meal option is not what works for me. Ironically two other couples I knew were there and their thoughts reflected the same comments. One however managed to delay his departure from the table for another 45 minutes. Staff: Mustsay understood when expressed my thoughts at end of the night and were very polite and clearly indicated this type of complaint was not irregular. Dining at a restaurant like Rata should be a pleasure not a 100 metre sprint.
