The Gables restaurant is the oldest running restaurant in New Zealand. It is on the waterfront in Russell. It is a must do when visiting the area. Service and food is always fabulous!

We thoroughly enjoyed dinner here. Delicious food-fish stands out, it is fully cooked blue nose, duck and pickled appetizers. The service is very good, they have a good wine selection, and there are many local wines to choose from. We were there that night and it was raining, so we had to sit in the house, but it was a good choice to sit outside on a warm summer night... the view was beautiful.

Was operating a pop-up taco place at the time I went. Service was good despite the place being overrun with customers and staff were very polite and apologetic for delays. The food was tasty, although much heavier on spice than the menu described and the menu was not particularly well laid out or clear - however, this is the menu of the pop-up place, not the gables itself, so I'm unsure of the standard state. Overall a decent experience

Visited the Gables when it was John's, a pop up restaurant. Food was outstanding. The whole flounder was cooked perfectly, as was the charred sweet corn and salad. Also had the best oysters during our stay in Russell

Had dinner here last night the waiter is very friendly and welcoming. The fire was going and gave off great warmth. This is the oldest restaurant in New Zealand has been open since the whaling times and is built on whale bones. We ended up sharing three entrees and it was very nice. Just the right amount as one tends to eat a lot when on holiday. Recommend cost $$$

The best food currently available on The Strand at Russell right now. Unfortunately this popup "Ragtag Tacos" located within The Gables is only here for a short time so get down here quick for the amazing crayfish and fish tacos, charred sweetcorn and delicious sticky date pudding!

We had an excellent lunch here in beautiful Russell. Fresh fish and tasty oysters with a nice glass of Sauvignon bland. Wonderful view over the water. Great, friendly staff and reasonably priced.

Had the most delicious meal here 3 weeks ago! Make sure you book and request an outside table, especially if you're dining at sunset. We ate the most delicious oysters to start - that raspberry vinaigrette is to die for. Our mains were equally delicious, and the service was so good too! Couldn't recommend highly enough!

Amazing service. Amazing & well presented food. Terrific location. Allie was friendly & efficient. Seemed a nice vibe amongst the staff. Had grilled fish and salad and highly recommend it. I’ll try the lamb next time though!

Stunning entrée, main and desert. Oysters were beautiful with the most delicious vinegarette. Whole fish of the day was a new event and thoroughly enjoyed, cooked deliciously with a gorgeous sauce. And dessert too ticked all the right boxes. Stunning location, amazing front of house teamed perfectly with kitchen. Cant thank enough. Well worth the reservation.

Don't walk past this place if you fancy a really great meal in a romantic setting. The exterior can lead you into thinking that this is a place that's a bit stuffy - but the food and service here is absolutely excellent. I had the oysters and the fish and chips and my partner had market fish - all were wonderful. Great ambience. Not to be missed.

EUROPEAN QUALITY IN NZ So nice to be able to relax in an open sun setting table enjoying top class food. Service was fabulous including great wine and food recommendations. All In all highly recommended - this restaurant and team have got it 'right'

Thoroughly enjoyed the meal here. The service is really friendly. If you look for that old fashion kiwi service with big smiles and always seem to have been able to put a chat on between there super busy night, this is the place. The food, well, check out those pictures and they do taste as good.

Food was fantastic. Great to sit outside and right on the water Even when the power went out for this side of the peninsula they came out with candles and the food kept coming excellent service, fast, hot and even my kids loved the food. the only small complaint would be if you order a glass of sparkling then you only get half a glass besides that well deserving a five stars. Wish I had more photos to share but the power went out roughly 10 minutes before we got our main and it didn't come back on until about 10 minutes after we've finished our food Ps. They are open late, we were a walk in table of 4 at 9pm.

Lovely food. Very well looked after by the friendly waitress. We didn't have an extensive meal, just fish and chips but these were beautifully cooked , and accompanied by delicious house made condiments. Gluten free options available and dietary requirements adjusted for where needed. Highly recommended

We decided to shoot upto Russell for the day. We had a lovely crossing on the passenger ferry from Paihia to Russell. We cruised the shops and decided on The Gables Restaurant for our lunch. We sat opposite from the Gables Restaurant on one of their tables with a georgous view of Kororareka. Our Fish and Chips were beautifully cooked and Staff on today were very attentive.

Great dining experience, wait staff were very good and the food was fantastic. I ordered the steak and it was very tender and cooked exactly as asked. Wait times were very good considering the restaurant was full.

We had lunch here and enjoyed the tasty food (especially the home made ketchup that comes with the fish & chips), the nice view on the beach and the friendly service very much. However it is a bit pricey.

We came as a large group on a Monday night and it was relatively late, we were let know the kitchen was closing at 9pm and we were worried we would be the only ones there. Well when we arrived we were sat outside on a beautiful table under the lights and honestly everything was perfect. Service was 10000/10, the woman looking after us was funny and friendly and made us feel so welcome. Food was incredible, wine was wonderful, desserts to die for. We could not fault it, we will definitely be back!

Do you have butt loads of privilege? Do you want to dine in a classy establishment while gazing out upon the azure waters around Russell while secretly blaming poor people for their predicament? Then this restaurant is for you. We ordered the gigantic beef rib for two people. An absolute steal at $68 which equates to about two packets of darts which you can buy so that your kids go hungry. Meat was cooked to perfection and juicy and delicious. Well seasoned. Would have liked to have some freshness in the form of a salad to pair it off but otherwise solid.

The view from the Gables is amazing especially at sunset with the food a good match. Thoroughly enjoyed the fish and chips and the dessert.

Food was lovely , particularly the soup and fish n chips . Young guy that served us was chirpy and lovely , however, other staff weren't so friendly. Great spot to sit outside take in the view sipping on a glass of wine. No kids menu but do serve chips.

Enjoyed a meal here a few times when visiting New Zealand & Russell. Always been of a good standard although we have a little trouble with the mix of ingredients. Unfortunately this time our main course arrived before we had finished our starter, the fries were forgotten. Finally sorted by a very efficient young guy who couldn’t have been nicer. Portions are large but we did our best to finish a really good snapper fish. Dessert menu is great and all is complimented by a decent wine list. We had a window seat which was wonderful to watch the sunset.

Had a fabulous meal last night here at the Gables. Great setting over looking the water. Bev the waitress made our night, very friendly and bubbly. The whole team at Gables were friendly and very efficient. Top marks for presentation of the food. Very tasty, and great wine. Definitely going back.

The Gables is in a great location and has beautiful views of the harbour. It has a nice atmosphere and decor. I had the fresh baked pretzel bread and fish and chips, both of which tasted and looked great. Service was good, although after finishing my first drink I was never asked if I wanted another, however others on my table were. I would definitely go again.

We had lunch outside by the beach on our last day in the Bay of Islands - fabulous views - the service and food was superb! Our only wish was that if we could've discovered this wonderful eatery earlier on instead of on our very last day - we would've been dining here everyday just to sample more of the menu💗 Hope to be back again soon for another break from Auckland💗

Had a wonderful dinner overlooking the water and picturesque sunset. Highly recommend for the food, the service, and the atmosphere. Also vegetarian-friendly.

The day we visited the weather was cool-to-warm and the sun was shining with a very light breeze. While the hoards of visitors noisily congregated in and around the facilities near the wharf, we found a quiet oasis of serenity further along the beach, at The Gables. Our table was right on the beach, under a pohutakawa tree, 1m away from the pebble beach. It was peaceful and the view was outstanding. The waitstaff were very friendly and engaging, providing excellent service and food and drinks to die for. I would not hesitate to visit again, even if I had to make a special ferry trip from Paihia to do so.

The highlight of The Gables is the setting on the beautiful beachfront of Russell. Make sure you get a table with a view. The general ambience is nice and the food is pretty good. Service was also ok. And you can say you’ve been to the oldest restaurant in New Zealand!

Always have an amazing culinary experience when I dine here just consistency can vary as well as service enjoy lunch more than dinner but the food is always impeccable fantastic menu that caters to all dietary requirements just perfect had waygu rump and lamb amazing.

Excellent food & wine just across from the beach in Russell. Vegetarian friendly as well as being great for those who prefer seafood or meat. The waitstaff were friendly, knowledgeable & timely. There was a gorgeous sunset when we ordered desserts & our server suggested we have it at one of their tables just off the beach. So we had our scrumptious desserts while watching a fabulous sunset. Truly memorable. Thank you to The Gables!

10/10. Great food and great customer service. Honestly- still raving about our meals and we were treated so fabulously by the staff. As soon as we heard about "NZs oldest restaurant" we knew we had to eat here. It's awesome to be in this building that is a part of our history. Loved the wee section where old newspapers had imprinted into the wood. Loved looking out over the water too as the sun went down. Would gladly go back.

We caught the night ferry across from Paihia to have one last look around Russell. We walked into The Gables restaurant and were welcomed so warmly. The food was exquisite and the attentiveness of the staff was a joy to experience. A must to go to.

It was totally awesome experience taking dinner here. The location is suitable for watching sunset. Waiters are really kind. And the dish was quite good. Highly recommend here when it is sunset.

Sadly our waiter was grumpy and put a shadow over the evening. Entries were ok ( just ) the motzrella was a joke incredibly small and no taste at all but yet expensive , the oysters were good . the fish and chips were the highlight good portions and homemade sauce was very good. The venison main was small and it's accompanments were tiny None of us bothered with dessert. Pricing was about right . Overall Ok

Absolutely gorgeous! The decor and view are stunning. The house is vintage with wooden panels and a fireplace, and windows right onto the harbour. Be there at sunset! The food was the most delicious we had on the archipelago. Truly fresh, beautiful wine to go with it, all in all winning. Would love to go back any time!

We had a beautiful meal at a window table. The menu selection was great and the specials were spectacular. We had the smoked eel starter special which was wonderful and then the lamb and snapper for main courses. Staff are very helpful and lovely. Thank you for a great night.

Lovely food, comfortable but not over the top in setting and decor. True to it's history. Not necessarily over priced for quality but meal sizes were small. The pasta of the day was six pieces of homemade ravioli - delicious but no way near enough to enjoy as a main meal.

Beautiful old building with an incredible setting. We loved watching the harbour through the windows. Oysters were incredible. Green lipped mussels were delicious. The seafood chowder, however, was somewhat disappointing. It didn't have a lot of flavor.

The food was brilliant. Some of the flavour combinations had us confused when we were reading the menu, but trust the chef! Everything was amazing and I can highly recommend anything with kawakawa. Lovely service and great views, overall a wonderful experience.

Had a meal here last Saturday with friends from Europe. Could not believe how fresh the seafood was and our steaks were simply divine. Everyone enjoyed their food especially those that got salmon. Who knew that New Zealand had some of the best salmon in the world? Our oysters On the Half-Shell where some of the best we've ever had. Glad I picked this region to stay forever. Will be visiting the gables until I die.

One of the best restaurants I've been to in New Zealand. Seriously. Small and excellent menu, with superbly prepared dishes. Service is impeccable and friendly, and the building is great. This place is really about the FOOD. No false pretenses, no posturing, just great food. We had the whole snapper and it was BY FAR the best snapper that both my wife and I have ever eaten, and one of the best seafood dishes I've tasted (and I am a self-declared seafood snob). We also had the grilled steak for two and it was absolutely perfectly cooked and delicious, with a well prepared Café de Paris butter on top (and on the bone!) The snapper and the steak were more than plenty for four of us, with no appetizers. Also, they have a great wine list, amazing desserts (including local cheeses), and great coffee. It was an absolute feast, and one of those meals that we'll remember for many, many years.

My family and I went on a 10 day Northland trip travelling around Opononi, Cape Reinga, Mangonui, Paihia, Tutukaka to name a few. One of the highlights on our trip was having lunch at the Gables in Russell. My family literally tried every single fish n chip shop around the north island including the “ world famous Mangonui fish n chip shop” but Gables took us by surprise. This was the best fish n chips I’ve ever eaten from the mushy peas, to the hand made chips to the yummy fish everything was a pure delight. The customer service was outstanding not to mention the location was breathtaking! One day we will be back that’s for sure!

We have been there 4 times. This is probably the best restaurant in Russell. Food is always good and sometimes great. The beef has always beef a winner. The John Dory last night was spectacular. The gnocci was disappointing. Last night the server was a bit unpleasant at times, which was a first. Usually they are great.

This place is just awesome. First and foremost, the food was great from start to finish, really well spiced/seasoned and great quality of meat as well. And also, the restaurant has nice ambience with the old wooden structure and pictures. It was a pleasure having a meal here.

Loved our meal at The Gables. Food was delicious and staff were great. As an interesting aside, before going we read someone else's review in which they joked about what a good place it is to go and talk about how our problems are the fault of the poor and similar such white privileged subjects. We thought it an odd thing to write in a review. I couldn't believe my ears when I overheard the table next to us loudly discussing beneficiaries etc. Must be a thing....

It was disappointing really. We didn't get the table we booked. The ambiance was not as good as I hoped. I had this picture of a really old interior, lots of wood and a quaint bar. The bar side was less than quaint and the restaurant side , other than the fire, was quite open and barn like, they seem to have stripped any character. The service was begrudging and half hearted. The food was under whelming, I had a pasta that was just lack luster in flavour and the pasta wasn't cooked correctly. We avoided spending any further money with them for dessert.

The Gables is New Zealand's oldest operating restaurant! We had dinner on the awesome beachfront of Russel, looking towards Paihia. The staff was very nice, helping us in choosing vegetarian dishes. We also had a glass of a very good local wine. The food was great, and everything made the evening a remarkable one.

The food is slightly better than average, the service was average. Disappointing given it is touted as the next best thing in Russell after the Duke, and it was between the two long weekends.

Excellent food at very reasonable prices. I had the seafood chowder and it was delicious. If you are lucky enough to get a table outdoors or next to the window you will add to your experience amazing views.

An evening in this, possibly the oldest operating restaurant in NZ, does not disappoint. The seafood - particularly the local oysters - are a must. The service is fine, the food fresh and perfectly cooked, and the prices fair. Highly recommended.

We caught a Snapper in a nearby bay and took it to Gables. The chef did an incredible job of turning it into a gourmet meal - amuse bouches, starters and mains. Such a lovely place and incredibly friendly staff. Highly recommend it!

Menu said this was the oldest restaurant in New Zealand. Although the food was of high quality the service was generally poor, not exaclty friendly, we waited a long time to order, for the food and for the bill! We ordered and the food was minimal so it would have been helpful if the waiter had suggested some side options.

Set in a historic building on Russell's waterfront the restaurant exudes a special charm from the moment you walk in.The staff was lovely and efficient and the food just amazing.The chefs do an outstanding job at serving local cuisine with excellent flavor and execution from presentation to taste.We especially enjoyed the seafood risotto and roasted lamb.The wine list includes lovely NZ wines with special gems throughout.I found myself dining here several times during my stay while watching the sun set from my table and look forward to coming back to the best restaurant in Northland to do just that!!
