C.What an awesome spot, looks small out front but opens up into a massive area with two outdoor seating spots, 1 in a garden and the other on a deck. The coffee was top dogs, the staff were friendly and the range of food they have is amazing. There are great vegetarian options from the cabinet if you’re in a hurry or get the kitchen to make you something up. Highly recommend coming here first if you’re driving through. Will def come here again if I’m coming back through.
C.FIVE STARS well deserved. An absolutely awesome place for a coffee, a bite or a meal. The atmosphere was great, so many bits and pieces to look at. Staff were really friendly and highly efficient. And the food was really tasty, with lots of thought going into the varied menu. I cannot recommend The Wholemeal Cafe highly enough!! Go and try them if you're in the area! We will definitely be back again!!!

T.Absolutely love the music a actor posters around it really did remind me of the main street of Movie World in Aus. We were only planning to get a coffee and go put we couldn't help but admire the design.
And then the food was amazing I reallly didn't expect such an amazing meal from such a small town. Well worth the break if you're going between Collinwood and Nelson.

M.6 months ago we visited, food and service was always as its been for decades. We visited recently (April 2022) and the food is still great, service is a bit up and down. Some staff seem to be there to just take an order as a process, no smiling or welcoming, a few staff are friendly, some don't even make eye contact. It's disappointing as it's a cool place. I get that it can be busy however a smile doesn't go astray.

J.Awesome cafe! They’ve made a huge effort to respond to the governments mandate requests by offering both contactless and in-house options. They did loose key staff, as a lot of local businesses have, so are having to train a lot new staff as they go into the busiest season. Everyone is going to have to have some patience and understanding and not leave mean spirited comments like the previous guy - gah!! Imagine having no idea about what goes into serving hundreds of customers a day and then complaining about it on Google…
C.I went there and asked if any vegan options were available. They managed to prepare a vegan version of their bean tortilla which was way more than awesome and tasty!
Really good staff, thanks again to the chief and the couch we ate from was super comfy.
M.Lovely cafe, great vibe and food was amazing. The fish was fresh and crunchy, just like the chips as well. Exactly how i like my fish n chips. Just a couple disappointments the salad was a little over dressed for my liking but did go well with the rest of the meal.
Iced coffee 😥😢.....I paid $9 for an iced coffee and im sorry but that was a total disappointment. No wow factor like i was expecting, no cream on top or ice cream blended in. Pretty sure it was made with UHT milk as it just had that particular taste. I should have just bought 2 normal coffees and drank them cold.

A.A 4.5 star rating doesn't come easy but the coffee I got after waiting for a good 10 minutes and finishing our food first was terrible. It was slopped all over the saucer and too hot to drink and when it cooled down it was watery and bitter. The cafe decor and cabinet food look fantastic and it's a really cool place so I'm hoping that this is a once off thing.

Oh my were we impressed! The service was lovely and the food was to die for! We're both from nelson and I have to say the food was better than anything I'd had from over the hill...
It was all so good we went back the next day for breakfast!! We couldn't be happier it was definitely money well spent... And talking about money the pricing was amazing.

B.The food was ok, but I found the service to be mediocre for the price. The till staff took one order item at a time rather than just taking the whole order at once. Items were heated in a microwave, which was fine, but really needed condiments like sauce to complete them. We got them when requested but they should have been offered from the get go.
They have a good review average, but need to work harder on their service. Don't take your business for granted.

M.If you visit Golden Bay but not The Wholemeal then you've missed something unique (I don't use that word lightly) and a distillation of the funky, cosmopolitan essence of this glorious place. Rated highly by residents in a newspaper survey of their beloved local icons, it's a great cafe, an ice-cream shop, a performance venue, a homage to films and the movie theatre it once was, a social hub, an art gallery, a rabbit warren of interesting alcoves, and a favoured meeting venue for businesses, clubs, the knitting group and more. It's full of good flavours, visual treats and international accents. Grab a seat and add your own culture to the great big melting pot.

X.I had eggs Benedict the eggs were exactly how i asked for them the bacon aas great quality and not too crispy and the hollandaise sauce was made in house it did need a little more zing perhaps slightly more lemon juice as it aas very buttery but still delicious, will definitely be back for more.

P.This has become our regular cafe when we are in Takaka. Curly frys are great for the kids. Burgers are the bomb and the service is really commendable.
S.Always a high light of a stay in Golden Bay to sit on the verandah and have lunch here. Delicious hearty food and friendly staff. I loved the vegan pattie with home made plum sauce! My husband is addicted to the curly fries. It's a must do in the bay.

This is also where I met my husband, on a Winter’s night, 15 years ago!
In that time, we have loved this cafe- it’s never disappointed us, infact it’s got better and better and better!
My recommendations are the curries, the salads, the egg bacon croissant, eggs bene, the fish, the pinwheels!!! Try a spirilina or a chai, or a smoothie!!! Nom!!!!

D.We lucked out while coming back from Farewell Spit when we stopped here. The lineup of food behind the case had my mouth watering and did not disappoint. I wish I would have bought the cookbook while I was there, it looked pretty nice and was $20 or $25, now for both cookbooks + shipping they want $85 which is a shame. That has nothing to do with the fact you should stop here though!

J.The coffee was great but was let down by the waitress who was rude when we didn’t understand her. She came up with a coffee and said ‘cap mug’. We are kiwi and none of us had a clue what she was saying. She scoffed at us. Won’t be going back there.
