What a hidden gem! This place is off the tourist track but well and truly enjoyed by locals. Food was delish and service was impeccable and super friendly. Wine and beer selection is out of this world which lots of local stuff as well as the beer brewed on site. If we were staying longer in the area we would have went for round two. Can recommend the Buckwheat and Pumpkin Salad and the fries (these were amazing).

Genuinely one of the best dining experiences I've ever had, if not the best. The smell when you walk in is simply unmatched. I had the bacon and egg girlled sandwich and boy was it amazing. Will definitely be coming here again next time I pass through the town. Absolute must visit

Fantastic meal, huge portions, very filling. The only downside and its minor is that it's quite noisy. Service was excellent as well. Update: 2nd Feb 2020 - came for breakfast/brunch and it was fantastic. A Breakfast Burrito and Burnt End Brisket. Definitely recommend and going back.

Been here a few times and consistently great. Had a Big C burger and Chicken Snack plate this time. The burger was huge and filled with bacon cheese and salad, only minor complaint would be it is difficult to eat, but that's only due to it's massive size. The snack plate was also a good sized portion and all the components were really tasty, crispy but succulent fried chicken, real mash and a light slaw, alright the gravy was probably packet and there wasn't much of it, but again very minor considering the quality of everything else. Also a nice place to eat with indoor and outdoor seating, and they serve their own craft beer.

I had been meaning to try this place for a while after hearing from many people how amazing the food is there. Needless to say my expectations were sky high. Finally got there for lunch yesterday and they not only met my expectations but exceeded them in ways I can't imagine. I had the Beef Brisket burger and it changed the game in ways I didn't know the game could be played. On top of that the customer service was exceptional! Every part of my experience was amazing and I'll definitely be back again!

Even though we came by on the Thursday before Easter when they were incredibly busy, the service from all staff was five star throughout the entirety of the evening. Really good first impression. Open, light setting, making clever use of the vege patch at the front entrance, and brewery in the rear, as decor. Friendly, attentive service. Inhouse beer was just what the doctor ordered, and my cheeseburger was yum. Wife was just as enthusiastic about her pinot gris, and fried chicken with blue cheese sauce. Dessert just as good. Definitely coming back here.

Went to Salt and Wood on a Wednesday night where it was busy. We were promptly seated and served. Cosy and bubbly bistro atmosphere. Drinks were excellent and well priced. Really loved the gin cooler. I had the shaved brisket burger and the missus had the pulled pork quesadilla, with fries to share. The burger wouldn't be my first choice, as I found it a bit heavy on the meat (which I suppose I could have anticipated) but my primary issue was just that the brisket itself was a bit bland. I think more salt would do a lot for it. However, I loved the chutney which added an interesting vibe. The quesadilla was excellent, but again, a necessary touch in my mind would be for the fresh salsa to receive a splash of citrus juice or vinegar and perhaps some fresh coriander to tie it together. Fries were nice, crunchy shoestrings with a delicious roasted garlic mayonnaise. A big serving, definitely requires 2 people to tackle. I honestly would have bought a desert but the food was so filling that I didn't feel I could stomach it - again, probably ought to lighten the burger up by a quarter to a third (in terms of brisket) since I was full despite leaving some on my plate. Overall, I give 5 stars for service, 5 stars for drinks, and 4 stars for food.

Second time I went there for lunch. Customer service is OK and burger was OK, fries were good and jalapeño poppers were tasty. But when I asked "What beer would go well with the cheeseburger?" The response was "Well we don't have this one..." Is that because it suits the burger so much so don't get it...? Odd response and didn't sell me on it. Even if they lied and said "This one goes really with beef burgers and is what our chef has when they have a burger" lie to me, sell me your goods. Dont tell me what I cant have. BTW first time was a bit of a flop as well with the customer service. Two out of three of the menu items I wanted were sold out. Now that's OK, but how about tell me BEFORE I start to give you my order. Better yet, BEFORE I even look at the menu. Food is generally good and staff are generally friendly just a little... thoughtless.

Very nice local bar and restaurant. I was meeting someone here for a first date with a woman, having not met her before, so the staff directed me to the person they thought it was, and they were right! Great eatery, took the kids for lunch on the last day of the holidays. It was busy but not packed. The staff were really friendly and attentive, and the service was pretty quick too. My boy loved his chicken burger! My pancakes were nice, but as much as I love lemon and maple syrup, they could have done with just a little of something else too. The girl (whose appetite isn't huge) opted for the virgin fries, which were a little bigger serving size than she'd expected. They were surprisingly sturdy for shoestrings, and stood up well under all that salsa and sour cream. I had been really keen to try the brisket on the brunch menu, but wasn't quite hungry enough for all of that goodness. Next time I won't have breakfast first! We'll be back!

Great beer! Very rarely find a brewery where I like most of the varieties. Super Alpha summer ale is delicious and pilsner is light and happy but the iron sands stout is an awesome interpretation of a lighter style of stout. Also the smoked BBQ pork ribs on a Friday are finger licking!

My boyfriend and I payed this little gem a visit for a quick bite to eat during our quick visit into town. And I must say that I was immediately struck by the inviting atmosphere of the place. It's open, airy and we had a very pleasant experience with the staff. If you happen to find yourself in Waikanae, do yourself a favor and pay this little gem a visit.

The chowder was lovely, but, upon asking for a soup spoon, didnt really appreciate being given a dessert spoon. Not really up to standard. Very simple improvements.

Came down from Palmy one weekend to sample the American style bbq fare. It was well worth the trip. Having just come back from the States we were craving some bbq and we found it here. I had burger with brisket and pork, meat was tender and juicy and came with some equally delicious chips. Obviously having north end brewery attached meant the beers were fantastic too.

North End Beers are worth the visit on their own, then you add the Salt and Wood Collective food, which combines a great sense of pub fare with what delicious food should be. What a wonderful place for Waikanae to call it's own. This is american BBQ with a bit of a kiwi twist. Pancakes and eggs benedict for breakfast, but with sides of smoked brisket, sausage or bacon (oh the bacon is so very very good). My personal preference is a one of their tasty morning meals over a well made coffee. I find the popularity of this restaurant is also a downside on busier nights; The pleasing rustic concrete and wood finish to the place also lend itself to echoes and (for me) a distracting level of noise Friday evenings after work; That said the meals are always top-notch no matter the time of day. Long may the Salt & Wood last.
