This is some of the best Indian food I have eaten. The flavours of almost every dish we tried were complex and layered, and the serving sizes are excellent for the price. The pakoras are the best I've had outside of an actual Indian kitchen, and the Dal soup was incredible. The service is also fantastic, with a really nice mix of friendly and formal. A wonderful dining experience.

Ordered a butter chicken to go on their website. Have lived around the corner for a couple of years and decided to try them. Love the extra veggies. I think the owner greeted me at the door and was extremely lovely. While i was waiting many of the waiters came up to me to make sure I had been served. Outstanding effort, can see why they are always so busy. Will come again !

5 stars for service as the Duty Manager was very friendly and polite. But food I won’t rate much as this being an Anglo Indian and not proper Indian restaurant. Also feel sad for that big black fish which is there in the dining area in the fish tank, please let it go in the sea or get some company for her.

I'll give 3 stars to the them. The service is good, but as if you see from an Indian customer's point of view, I don't feel it was good. Their service is absolutely good. I would say, people treat the customers very nicely and they are trained very well. 2 less stars, because the quantity is less. It's my personal point of view, I am from Auckland and for 3 people I usually pay 60-$80. I paid $55 but I didn't even feel satisfied because of the less quantity. It's a good restaurant for people who like just taste, but I like taste as well as quantity.

This restaurant is how an Indian should be, great food, great service and food that fills you up. It has been a long while since I have seen all three lassi's under one roof. I went for lunch and was impressed by the quality of the food and service. Despite coming in just at the end lunchtime service I was made to feel welcome and was not rushed. The food was authentic and served traditionally. The finish touch for me was when I was handed a hot towel to clean up. This is a must for travellers and local, highly recommended.

Had dinner here a couple of weeks ago and would definitely recommend. From the minute we walked in we were looked after. We were advised on what to have with various dishes and the special naan bread was absolutely delicious. A family recipe I believe. Will definitely be going back on our next visit to Wellington.

Very good restaurant. The table service is excellent. I thought the food was expensive. But the quality was very good. The staff are very courteous feels like you and in an upsale restaurant in India. Their menu has variety. I had murg mussalam it was $31. It was delicious. It wasn't Authentic but it was pretty good. The Bombay Aloo is delightful. I've never seen it in other restaurants so I come to Great India for it. It is quite spicy and can't be made more mild, so getting a raita with it is a very good idea! The lunch special is an excellent price too - $14 for curry, rice and naan. You can't get much better than that! I also enjoy the hot towel at the end of the meal, that's another thing I've never experienced anywhere else and really appreciate. It's such a lovely touch. Now I work quite close to the restaurant, I try to come here often.

For those that want to live on the wild side there are some "off-Menu" items that get way, way spicier than a super-hot vindaloo.

My favourite curry place in Wellington! My friend and I always come here to catch up when he’s in town. Lunch is $12 and comes with any flavour naan, any flavour rice and a curry. My favourites from here are the classic Butter Chicken or the Lamb Korma, my friend always gets the Vindaloo extra spicy! They always provide water in the Bombay Sapphire bottles. Looking forward to returning to Wellington for some Great India Curry! Many thanks for always have great friendly service!

I recently tried the lunch menu at Great India. I was quite pleased with the food and service. I ordered, Gethu masal (a lamb curry) with plain naan and pulao rice for mains. Tandoori chicken for starters and kulfi for dessert. All of them were good. Gethu chicken was very different to any Indian curry I have tried in Wellington. Makes me curious. I now want to see how their other curry dishes will be. The portion size of Tandoori chicken seemed a bit small. It could have been because it was ordered as a lunch side. My partner tried gulab jamoon for desert and it could have been a bit softer. But otherwise, everything else was quite nice.

Our yesterdays dinner was verry good. The Peshwari naan was verry different than what we are used to in Holland. This one was thicker and rich filled. We had the madras chicken curry and a mango lassi which was delicious! The personel is very friendly and take upmost care to their customers. The place is close to the cinema but please take enough time to enjoy the food and place!

I've been coming here for over 10 years now and the food and service have been consistently good. Likely one of the best, if not the best, Indian restaurant in Wellington. Would rather call this place ,,not that bad India’’. The food in generally was delicious, only thing what made me mad a bit that they don’t give you a rice with the main food. You need to order rice on the side but it was still pretty small portion. I’m used to go to the Indian restaurant and leaving nearly exploding how much food you get. It didn’t happen over here and after a two main courses, two bowls of rice and bread (nan) we needed to go next door get some kebab as we were still hungry.

Top end. This place is expensive but worth every cent. The service is always polite and attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. The wine menu is excellent. The ambience is very traditional western/Indian cross-over. The food is plentiful and super tasty. Gujerati style with some Bangladeshi influence. Great for vegans too. Hands down the best Indian I've ever eaten yum yum yum! Table service is fantastic, staff very attentive and accommodating and loved that the waiters asked if we had any time constraints so they could take that into consideration. Waiters picked up that we were a group table and sharing everything so they accommodated by providing us with a selection of Nan's and differing rice for our accompaniments helping us to have a little bit of everything. A pretty discrete restaurant which is harder to see if you haven't purposely looked for it. But that was the advantage in this case - many free tables when most other restaurants were full. They had a $12 for a main, a naan, and a rice deal (which looked like it was permanent every lunch) which was brilliant value considering the service and the feel of the place. It felt like a nice upmarket restaurant yet prices didn't reflect that. Food was good - plenty of choice including vegetarian options. The "medium" spice level was proper Indian medium, so the "hot" must've been really hot. There was also a good range of wine and beer, and a few Indian drinks.

The cuisine is certainly the best Indian offerings that I have tasted (not that I am an authority) as it is moorish, well balanced with the right kick of spice and heat. The food was really good and so was the service. However the management practice of ordering food without your consent leaves a bad taste. One only finds out when one is paying at the end. I was asked about having Papadum to which I agreed expecting either no charge or a small charge. But the waiter brought a tray of four pickles. I assumed it was part of Papadums. But they charged me an extra $6 for something I had not even ordered. I strongly recommend the management should stop this practice.

This is one of my favourite restaurants in Wellington and I always visit when on tour or in town. Popadoms served as starters. Good selection of curries from different parts of India and Anglo curries too all at a reasonable price for the quality. You have to try the garlic naan! There is is also 3-5 different rice dishes. They do ask curry strength. We payed around 120 for three of us with non alcoholic drinks. Good vegetarian selection as well.

Chicken vindaloo was certainly spicy (which makes a change in NZ) but the flavour wasn't that good, texture was stodgy and chicken was almost nowhere to be found. While in Adelaide, on the last leg of our four-week holiday, I rang my son Handsome to book a restaurant of his choice of my lunch treat to him when I get back to Wellington. As expected, he Googled for a good Indian restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised, to put it mildly, with the venue and the huge aquarium. I got there early, I'm always early for dates and appointments, and asked the waiting staff for the table next to the aquarium. Ignoring what I said, he asked how many are there in my party. I said two - my son and me. He pointed and started walking to a table set-up for two. Frankly, I was a bit annoyed, so I barked: Are you saying we CANNOT sit here (with matching death stare). He said, of course Sir, you can sit here. I said GOOD! Handsome was very satisfied with his order - butter chicken, of course. He always orders butter chicken! I asked what the best item is on the menu and ordered it. Handsome and I were both very impressed! And we were even impressed when we realised that on weekends, lunch is only NZ$12.00 per person, complete with mains, rice and naan bread. What a bargain for the high level of service, the tastefully-appointed venue, and the good quality food. Paolo's favourite Indian restaurant in town, the one in Manners, pales in comparison. The owner, who supervises the kitchen and mans the cash register, was very efficient and warm. We are definitely coming back! It's just a pity I cannot take my lovely Dianne there, because Indian food doesn't like her, whatever that means. Para mí, cuatro estrellas .
