Reviews of TASTE OF HOME
A.
I was so excited to come here and I’m so glad I did. I ordered their daily special which was vegetarian dumplings in hot sour soup and they were out of hand pulled noodles so I just took whatever the staff recommended. The soup was pretty good but I would’ve loved it to be more sour. The dumplings were great and the small, thin noodles were a good addition. The soup travelled well and remained hot within the container. It cost me $14 which is great value and I can’t wait to come back again and try something different.
B.
Exquisite flavours. Absolutely scrumptious. These photos do not do it justice. The Dan Dan mian and spicy tofu bites are my go to. The spicy tofu bites are crisp on the outside with a satisfying crunch as you bite into it and the dan dan mian - words cannot explain. A must try for yourself!
S.
Everything we ordered was delicious! The milk buns and the taro balls were soooo so good. The food was loaded with yummyness. I am definitely going back to try more items from the menu.
J.
So good! Really nice strong flavours, tasted really fresh and yum. I had the veg suanlafen to take away, excellent service, easy and fast. The noodles looked so good, every bite was beautiful and the flavours were really strong, which I love. Reminded of the noodle places I used to go to in Beijing. 10/10 will def be back
C.
Really reminds me of noodles made by my grandma! Not artificially flavoured or too fried. The texture of the hand pulled noodles is very nice and I like the pork belly (in soy sauce). Small place and not many seats so it’s quite cosy.
m.
🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
Daaaaamn, This was soooo good. These noodles had the perfect density. The Dan Dan noodles are their signature; a great balance of sauce to noodle. The vegan version was equally tasty; you almost couldnt tell the difference. Spice is up to you too, just tell them how you like it. Highly recommend.
C.
The Vegan Suan La Fen soup and Spiced Tofu is amazing. Keep serving up delicious vegan options TOH!
S.
Amazing hand pulled noodles! I had the Dandan noodles with extra braised pork belly and my husband had the wonton in hot and sour broth... We had the milk buns for dessert, they were ridiculously good! Already planning our next trip to Wellington for more!
P.
Wooooooow, this place is amazing. I'm feeling almost a bit sad to write yet another 5 star review for it, it'll get too popular 😭 I don't know how they do it but everything I tried so far tasted absolutely amazing, out of this world amazing. Go for the Dan Dan noodles (medium hot), loaded fries and the Taro/Milk/Peanut sweet snack thingy. Ontop of the food it so reasonable priced.
H.
Love the noodle. Nice and chewy texture. Flavor is quite unique and nice too. Fried chicken is alright. Place is a bit small, so there is not many seats available.
S.
The most delicious meals!! Everything has so much flavour !!!!
And did I mention the delightful range of deserts with the most incredible variety to choose from. Hands down best cheesecakes in town !!!
J.
The food was delicious and very authentic - definitely a taste of home (if your home is China)
It's a small place so best to get takeaway, but there's a few bench seats available if you want to dine and dash.
Service was friendly and the food was delicious - 5/5!
E.
The hand pulled noodles were great! Amazing texture and a nice amount of bite means that you really get to appreciate the effort that went into making the noodles. The fried milk buns were a treat and we devoured them!
J.
Great little cosy hole in the wall. The soup was so good and the noodle texture was great. Hard to find biang biang noodles. And on top of great soup they have delicious desserts with the taro balls and donut buns with condensed milk on top. Great place, love the little space.
T.
Stumbled across this little eatery serving Sichuan cuisine. Had a great meal of yu po mian aka biang biang noodles. The noodles are handmade and cooked perfectly - nice and chewy. Chilli oil used is delicious!
Update: Second visit was for the dan dan noodles. Asked for the extra hot and that’s exactly what I got! Spicy and numbing Szechuan peppercorn used. Best part was the ability to BYO container for takeaways!
G.
If you’re missing your Sichuan food fix then this is your taste of home away from home. Wonton noodle soup, Dandan noodles and spicy pork belly on rice are on the menu and on your taste buds long after you leave. Having lived in Hong Kong and visited Chengdu,Taste of Home is delicious and authentic (the Chinese lady sitting next to us confirmed this and that it is the best in Wellington - she’s from Chengdu too). Go.
C.
Loved it . The images don't do the food justice. Beautiful subtle flavours..we will definitely be coming back.👍
S.
We have been there almost 15 times and can say the food is extremly authentic and delicious but I didn't like the surcharge on my debit visa.
T.
This is one of the BEST restaurants I have ever been to - So flavoursome and delicious. The Dan Dan noodles and hand pulled chicken noodle soup are my favourite meals in Wellington. Would eat here every day if I could!
E.
Falling in love with the hand pulled noodle, good option for takeaway food. Will be back next time when visit Wellington.
A.
Ow yeah, I love extra hot option and delicious. The hand pulled noodle taste great.
M.
Was not the type of hand pulled noodles I was expecting but still good nonetheless. Very nice assortment of asian drinks in their fridge and great customer service.
A.
Very authentic Asian cuisine but I may have made a mistake making it the absolute mildest (no chilli) as it was lacking a little in taste.
That said, it was still a very tasty meal and I would 100% go back in future (I got food envy looking at everyone else's as I think I might have ordered the wrong dish - Pork and Rice).
Seating can be a little hard to come by here, but you can eventually find a spot (especially as wait times can be a little longer than most).
C.
Probably the best hand pulled noodles I've ever had. So good I messaged them to say so.
w.
You can tell that the noodles are made fresh and with care. Great portions with flavourful spices and the noodles were perfectly cooked. Chicken pieces also had a nice kick to it, glad they were boneless and easy to bite into. Definitely recommend if you want fresh and homemade noodles.
T.
Beautiful flavours, such a great variety of choice for Vegans and vegetarians, HIGHLY recommend the taro balls for a sweet treat at the end. Honestly such a cute and quaint place, not to be missed! Mainly soups on offer with option to add the meat of your choice. Average meal around $13. Highly recommend.
A.
Been meaning to try this place for over a year now, finally made my way there and ordered the hot and spicy won tons with noodles in a spicy broth, perfect, exactly how I like it. At first I was expecting a full on salty broth, but nope, subtle but packs a punch with the spices and herbs. Noodles, cooked perfectly, not mushy overcooked or under cooked, just perfect. I couldn't fault it even if I tried. The hand-pulled noodles are some of the best I've ever had. This place has my highest recommendation.
C.
Really enjoyed our meal from here. Got the Dan Dan noodles and the hot oil noodles with pork belly and highly recommend both. We had to catch the ferry home so we got take away and didnt take too long to come out. Would come back again when in welly next
R.
Loved the hand-pulled, homemade noodles with chicken broth dish for $10. You can tell that the noodles are made fresh and with care. Great portions with flavourful spices and the noodles were perfectly cooked. Chicken pieces also had a nice kick to it, glad they were boneless and easy to bite into.
M.
I've been to Sichuan and live in a city in the states with a fantastic Chinatown.. but oooooo me, that hand drawn Dan Dan jawn! Best noodles on earth, quite possibly.
C.
one of my favorite restaurants in Welly! I came traveling from AKL to Welly and just saw it’s permanently closed??? What???
C.
Food is amazing. Got the spicy tofu, but the wait is pretty long so call ahead
B.
The Dan Dan Noodles and the Cumin Lamb with Hand Pulled Noodles were absolutely amazing. Best food we’ve had in all of New Zealand. We’re new to Wellington after living in Auckland for 4 months and this will be one of our favorite dining experiences for a long time. Cute small restaurant with homey vibes. Affordable for the quality!
B.
Their noodles are so delicious I want to eat them every day. Unbeatable for the price.
S.
Taste of Home you warm the heart! Great little place with nice people serving. The food tastes fresh and the flavours are distinct. Great for anyone who likes real flavour, Dan Dan, Tofu on Rice and dumplings were super yummy! Great on the wallet too! Must try this if you like Chinese.
P.
Awesome food. Mild is quite spicy, but I love it

I'm the 200th review for this noodles
And provided the best experience in Wellington
M.
My friend heard about this place and it didn’t disappoint. Pretty tasty 👌🏼
x.
Food absolutely divine, out of this world. Will be coming back again and again.
L.
Happened upon this place last night with my husband while visiting Wellington. It is incredible!!Best meal yet since visiting New Zealand. Faves were the Yo Po Mian with fried chicken - medium gave it a good kick without overpowering it, and the fried dough balls, which managed to stay crispy during our walk home as we ate them over the hour. Great service, too. We were able to snag a seat and eat our main meal inside.
G.
The in house made, hand pulled noodles are excellent! Well cooked to a perfect texture and tasty as... Plenty of options available for any taste. Don't count on being able to eat in as the tiny place has very few seats
K.
Love love love taste of home! Their food is amazing. Hearty, fresh and delicious!! Our favourites are the spicy tofu on rice and the chicken hand pulled noodles but every dish we've tried has been superb. Keep up the great food! Thanks so much
J.
Excellent hand pulled noodles! My partner and I enjoyed this hole in the wall restaurant that provided top quality noodles. Will definitely recommend to anyone in Wellington that wants a quick authentic feed to check this place out. Great drinks selection too, including pineapple beer
C.
Amazing as usual. Super busy but they can always maintain a good quality of customer service.
R.
Fantastic quality of food offered, although not a large menu. Sit on a stool and eat over a bench / counter. Sits around 10 people so be prepared for a wee wait. Busy takeaway trade. Mainly soups on offer with option to add the meat of your choice. Average meal around $13. Highly recommend.
S.
Absolutely delicious I got the Yo Po Mian tofu hand pulled noodles and they were incredible- so much flavour! And we also got the milk buns which were ridiculously yum! I’m excited to head back tomorrow before going back home to Christchurch !
D.
Small location, but you can get it for take away. Best noodles I've had in a very long time. Rich broth if you want it, amazing hand pulled noodles, friendly staff. One of if not the best meal I've had in Wellington.
J.
Our first meal after we landed in Wellington. Was attracted by the name and decided to give it a go. Turns out it was really great. We had the Braised Beef Rice 红烧牛肉饭 and boy was it goooooood! Prices are reasonable too! Should definitely check it out.
K.
The glazed pork belly is insanely delicious. Tastes as good (if not better) than the best I've tasted in Asia. Highly recommended.
J.
I had the handpulled noodles and it was delicious! There are a few vegetarian/vegan choices, and I like how you can choose different toppings to add as well. Their sweets (deep fried taro & kumara balls and milk buns) are also a must have. The only thing is that I chose to have my noodles mild, but it was still preeetty spicy to me (my tolerance is pretty low though), so I can't imagine how spicy medium and hot would be!
e.
Yummy food. Best hand pulled noodles in town!!!
H.
We tried the Yo Po Main and the Dan Dan noodles and they both were amazing!
W.
The staff are very friendly and the food is wonderful. I had the Vegan Zha Jiang Mian, medium spicy. I found it very spicy but not unbearable, and very tasty. The place seems very popular, I had to get it as takeaway and go to Glover park to eat, which I enjoyed
E.
The din din noodles are near perfect (could be a bit more ma la), and the hand pulled noodles are unlike any other in Wellington. It actually feels like you've wandered down a hutong side street and found a perfect little dinner take away spot.
L.
their hand pulled noodles are the best in town. itty bitty shop but massive flavour. Ive been so many times and will always recommend to a friend.
M.
Amazing food. Really was like a taste of home. Good prices too. Highly recommend the hand pulled noodles ($10) and the milk buns ($5). Both are seriously good. The milk buns were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and served with condensed milk. Seriously good and can't wait to eat there again. They also do takeawayor you can eat it there. Staffare also very nice and are helpful with recommending things to eat
g.
Very flavourful food. It is very limited seating but you can eat in. The shop could have been fractionally warmer, but you don't notice this once you're eating especially if food quite hot.
D.
Got the spam stew & it was fantastic, highly recommend this joint
A.
I had the pork belly on rice. There were bean sprouts, bok choy and some greens which were a little salty on the side. Very good.
G.
Delicious food. Great hand pulled noodles. Also an amazing meat bun. Owners are really nice and quick service. Gotta get in quick though as it's a small room and only a few seats.
M.
Tried two of the vegan dishes. The spicy fried tofu was the bomb. Will come back and try the other vegan dish, and any more they add (could use a few more vegan dishes, but I won't be getting sick of that tofu any time soon).
R.
What a nice find. A small and hidden gem. Tasty, well dressed, well cooked, visually appetizing... Inexpensive most of all! Sweet desserts available (taro balls, fried milk buns, ...).
Open since almost 1 year. Pretty tiny place (6 people max probably) but it's possible to take-away. Henceforth one of my favorite asian food places in Wellington! Definitely recommanded!
C.
The Dan Dan Noodles was delicious
M.
You wouldn't expect much from this tiny hole-in-the-wall out-of-the-way place but you really have to check it out if you're ever down that end of Vivian St. Even if you're not, it's definitely worth the visit. We called in just to check out the menu but found ourselves drooling over the sweets. We left with (6) fried milk buns and (8) deep fried taro and kumara balls all drizzled with a modest but satisfying amount of condensed milk and the balls were sprinkled with peanuts. $11 later we were already planning what we would have for dinner there. Their hand pulled noodle dishes looked amazing and the service was awesome. You could eat in if you didn't mind the very small space but at the most it could only seat 5 comfortably. It was busy while we were there - people picking up pre-ordered bowls of deliciousness! The portions are generous and the prices are reasonably cheaper then other places in the Cuba St Quad. There isn't anything in the city that I could compare this to - it is definitely authentic! I love that it's small and unassuming amongst the Logan Browns and GMB's just a block over. I hope it keeps this appealing character and resists turning into another asian food place or chain. Taste of Home has all the makings of one of the best dining experiences in the capital.
I.
This a small and very popular place, especially during the lunch time. I got a dry version which was quite spicy and delicious. Next time will try with broth.
V.
Seriously delicious noodles. These people know what they are doing
M.
Do yourself a favour and sample any of the deliciously exquisite dishes of this pocket-sized restaurant ( just 4 or 5 bar stools)!
Each dish is without exception a mouth-watering sensation: 4 different types of noodles or rice are the staple with vegan and carnivore options.
M.
Delicious True Chinese Modern Street Food.
A Taste of Home serves some of the best Chinese
food in Wellington and is excellent value for money. It's a small and very cute restaurant that has been in its present location on Vivian Street for about a year. The owners are both chefs and provide the highest quality ingredients without compromise. They make their pulled wheat flour noodles each day by hand and use some very intriguing ingredients. For example, A Taste of Home offers a sweet desert made with peach gum and white wood ear mushrooms. Home made cookies are baked daily and a favourite is Oreo nougat. Another favourite that features Sichuan Pepper and the pulled wheat hand-made noodles is Liang Pi - a cold salad with julienne cucumber and a delightful dressing. Attention to detail is clear in the preparation of
each dish. Every dish is made fresh to order. The owners know that competition in the Wellington restaurant sector is super high -
Wellington has a higher concentration of restaurants than New York City - so knowing that it's a sink or swim game, A Taste of Home consistently offers absolutely scrumptious dishes that You will not find anywhere else in New Zealand. The Hot and Sour Soup is amazing. You can get it or any A Taste of Home dish that features noodles, with: wheat, glass, hand-pulled-wheat or rice noodles. Suggestion: try the Hot and Sour Soup with hand pulled noodles and special fried tofu. Saturday is dumpling and filled bun day at A Taste of Home. Handmade dumplings and fluffy buns are prepared starting in the morning to be enjoyed as a snack or as an awesome accompaniment to Your selected main. These are very popular and sell out fast! Go early to avoid disappointment.
A full selection of Chinese and Western cold drinks is available. A Taste of Home does not serve alcohol or hot drinks and no BYO is available at present. What makes this restaurant one that You'll want to visit often is the owners' continuous enthusiastic presentation of new and fascinatingly mouth watering dishes. Each week brings something wonderful and interesting. Take away service is available. A Taste of Home is open Monday to Saturday from 11AM to 8PM. The address is 128A Vivian Street, Wellington. And if You wish, You can call ahead to order. The phone number is: 04-382 8888.
K.
Cheap and tasty! What more can you want? Only downside is long wait times when it's busy.
Good access for wheelchairs, but limited space and high tables once inside - fine for takeout, but maybe not ideal for eat in.
D.
They make some very tasty popcorn chicken.
Recommended.
Y.
Always a lot of people but worth your waiting! It’s definitely the most traditional Sichuan style noodle in Welly.
S.
Lovely little place making high quality, clean and delicious food at a very good price. The service is quiet, efficient and friendly. They also have many vegan and vegetarian options. My new favorite place to eat in Wellington! 😍
l.
Amazing handmade noodles and chilli. I know where to come to get my hand pulled noodles fix.
H.
Favourite Asian takeaway in Wellington. However, they need to take food allergies more seriously as we have had peanuts included multiple times after specifying NOT to.
S.
Favorite takeaway in Wellington. Their vegan/vegetarian items are wonderful and the taro and kumara balls are super cravable.
C.
Not sure what the hype is all about. Noodles were tasteless and far too hot for medium and I can eat hot.
L.
Love the hand-pulled noddle! You po noodle is amazing, very authentic food, will highly recommended to everyone.
A.
Tasty and yummy food. The handpulled noodles are really good. They essentially do take away and there is like 5-6 high chairs to dine in. Lovely staff.
L.
Very authentic hand pulled noodles. Their Don Don Noodles are the best in Wellington.
A.
If hand-made noodle is your thing, go no further. Small little tucked away place. Gets really busy during meal times but well worth it!
M.
Fabulous noodles! Great depth of flavour, punchy spice, great texture. Tiny little place with a good value menu.
J.
Simple, delicious noodles with a great choice of toppings. They've got more seating now and all their takeaway packaging is renewable.
p.
Delicious food! Even changed my dish as it was a wee bit spicy for me.

(Translated) Good. Unfortunately, two of the soups had little taste, the hand-made pasta was unfortunately overloaded with garlic and coriander. The used Tofu, on the other hand, was great. The french fries variant was also good.

Gut. Zwei der Suppen hatten leider wenig Geschmack, die mit den Hand gemachten Nudeln war leider von Knoblauch und Koriander über laden. Das gebr. Tofu dagegen war toll. Ebenso die Pommesvariante war gut.
